Orlando Sentinel Says “No” To Hate

My erstwhile hometown paper, the Orlando Sentinel, has come out against the Florida ballot amendment to ban gay marriage. The state’s voters will face an array of six questions on the Nov. 4 ballot, the most notable of which is Amendment 2 — the cleverly labeled “Florida Marriage Protection Amendment.” Who wouldn’t want to protect marriage? Trouble is, this amendment …

The signs said Obama was for gay marriage and abortion, and said his candidacy was “endorsed by the KKK.” Another sign said, “Jesse Jackson hates Obama.” …

Afternoon View – Life In Florida

My mom sent me this photo this morning. I don’t know which is more disturbing, the ginormous snake or that her neighbors have a souvenir birdhouse from Rock City, Tennessee. I guess snakes know all the places to find them delicious bird eggs.

Ralph Nader Makes Florida Ballot

Via the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel: Ralph Nader is back. The perennial presidential candidate will be on the Florida ballot in November. Nader’s name is anathema to many Democrats in Florida becuase they blame him for President Bush’s 2000 election. They argue that the votes he siphoned from Gore made Bush the winner in the state. With Florida’s electoral votes, Bush …

FL Judge: Gay Adoption Ban Unconstitutional

A Florida judge has ruled that the state ban on gay adoption is unconstitutional, but his ruling will not immediately upend the ban. A Monroe Circuit Court judge has ruled Florida’s 31-year-old gay adoption ban ”unconstitutional” in an order that allows an openly gay Key West foster parent to adopt a teenage boy he has raised since 2001. Declaring the …

Narchitecture

Via Father Tony comes this amusing blog post about narchitecture, a new name for Miami’s mammoth waterfront homes that appear to be owned by drug dealers. Narchitecture is the pit bull of architecture. It grabs you by the (eye) balls and doesn’t let go, marrying a bevy of Mediterranean styles—neo-Classical, Spanish Revival and Fascist—with the vernacular American school known as …

Desperation Move

More dumbassery from the McCain camp as they pander to Florida’s powerful Cuban vote. The truth is, there’s no love between Obama and Castro. The Castro advertisement actually uses the foreign leader’s words against Obama. But the quote is misleading in regards to the actual political dynamics in play. For starters, since Obama became the de facto nominee, Castro has …

Orlando Subdivision: No Queers Allowed

Another bit of lovely news from my hometown. The tidy palm lined streets and affordable homes of the Rybolt Reserve subdivision in suburban Orlando have become popular with middle class homebuyers and speculators but if you are a gay or unmarried opposite-sex couple the Homeowners Association has a message – don’t bother to try to rent here according to some …

Because Democrats Caused 9/11

This billboard went up in St. Cloud, Florida this week. St. Cloud is a one-time cow town just south of Orlando in Osceola County, but now it’s mostly known for its strip of budget hotels not too far from main gate of Disney World. The billboard was put up by some whackjob local businessman and “man of God” who is …

Ft. Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle Loves To Talk About T-Room Sex

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle once again hammered the straw man issue of dirty, restroom trolling queers yesterday at the same time that he allowed that a “responsible homosexual” could be mayor of the city. Naugle will be term-limited out of office next year and two openly gay men have announced their mayoral candidacies. Many in Fort Lauderdale’s gay community …

Yesterday the New York Times Magazine published a Q&A with Florida Gov. Charlie “Closet Case” Crist as his star continues to rise as John McCain’s possible choice for running mate. The interview hits on Crist’s centrist positions (for a Republican) and takes a shot at his perpetual deep tan, which Crist attributes in part to his Greek heritage. But the …

Today: Ex-Gay Days In Orlando
Sunday: T-Dance At Parliament House

The wacky sad deluded “ex-gays” are having a conference in Orlando this weekend and have peppered the city with their dumbass billboards. (But this one is a parody done for this blog a couple of years ago by musical theatre star Steve Schalchlin.) Hey, why did the “ex-gays” pick the same weekend as Gay Days at Disney World? Hmmm. Anti-“ex-gay” …
