Televangelist Jan Crouch Dies At Age 78

Jan Crouch, the often weeping, always grifting televangelist known for mile-high pink wigs, troweled on eye makeup, and multiple plastic surgeries, has “gone home to glory” with White Jesus. From the right-wing Charisma News:

“Laurie and I have just watched the transition of our precious mother from this world to the next; watched her step into the presence of Jesus and into her heavenly reward,” Matt and Laurie Crouch said in a statement, “Jan Crouch, known around the world as Momma Jan, has gone home.”

Crouch and her husband, the late Paul Crouch, founded the Trinity Broadcasting Network in 1973. She produced multiple television programs including Praise the Lord, The Glory of America and Say Yes.

“Those who battled for the kingdom of God knew her as a fighter—someone who didn’t give up, someone who fought relentlessly to get the gospel around the world,” Matt and Laurie said. “Viewers of the Trinity Broadcasting Network knew her as someone who partnered with Paul Crouch in the launch and expansion of TBN, and as someone who came into their homes for over 40 years.”

In 2012 Crouch’s granddaughter accused her of “misappropriating” tens of millions in donations meant for their scam ministry:

Among purchases, the network founded by Televangelists Paul and Jan Crouch, is accused of misappropriating its ‘charitable assets’ toward a $50 million jet, 13 mansions and a $100,000-mobile home for Mrs Crouch’s dogs. Their granddaughter, Brittany Koper, 26, recently filed her allegations in court after a brief appointment as the network’s chief finance director in July. She claims she was fired in September after discovering the ‘illegal financial schemes’ according to the lawsuit obtained by the Los Angeles Times, and consequently reporting them to Mr Crouch.

Her lawsuit follows a second by another former employee and Koper in-law, Joseph McVeigh, the uncle of Mrs Koper’s husband, Michael Koper, who detailed the opulent spending by the Christian network. According to Mr McVeigh’s accounts filed in his lawsuit, the network used their collections for side-by-side mansions in Florida, as well as in Texas, Tennessee and California. The network’s $50 million luxury jet was purchased through a sham loan while Mrs Crouch’s personal jet, a Hawker, totalled $8 million, according to his suit.

“$100,000-mobile home for Mrs Crouch’s dogs”

    Jesus wept

    • Butch

That’s right. What kind of heathen forces dogs to live in a mobile home? Oh, the humanity.

    • tristram

I consider that money much better spent than the millions that went to jets, mansions, wigs and makeup.

      • Todd20036

I’ll agree about the jets, mansions, and even the make up.

But the wigs are a wonder of the world.

    • Soren456

She wanted her dogs to have the same experience as her own childhood.

But she spiffed it up by about $95,000.

      She was.

        Well that explains it.

  • hiker_sf

A god who would allow someone to walk freely with that hair is an abomination.

    • Todd20036

I disagree. Her hair is her only redeeming feature.

  • ClarkJoe

RIP to one of the greatest drag queens of all time. She will be missed.

    • Blake Mason

      Now Jan …Sashay away.

    • crewman

If there was justice in the comsos a drag queen would somehow end up with her collection of wigs. How cool would that be to see a drag queen doing her with her actual wigs?

  • Blake Mason

The modern drag queen has NOTHING on this women.

  • bryan

Wig manufacturers are going to struggle to get over this loss. Of business.

  • Octavio

So the nest of spiders living in her pink hair finally ate through into her brain and sucked the life out of her. That’ll larn ‘er.

Sickest most criminal grifting I’ver heard in a long time. Ugh.

      • tristram

        Rather run-of-the-mill stuff, actually.

    • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

Oh, man, that is just horrific.

    • Joe in PA

But you know…you can’t out give God.

      I HATE THAT EXPRESSION!

      • Todd20036

Technically, it’s a good expression. But IMO, giving to god means volunteering, donating to charity, helping others.

NOT donating to telescammers so they can buy a mansion with retirees social security checks.

        • Oh’behr

Exactly. Why I don’t mind seeing doing majority human services churches and religious organizations who feed the poor, shelter the homeless, visit and help the elderly, assist children with winter coats and not abuse them, etc. … remain tax free.

Telescammers and political grifter churches should be taxed. As they don’t do anything other than what benefits that church.

I have a few (in my neighborhood) churches who fall into the majority human services category. I’d hate to see them taxed out of existence as they do good work.

Now a suburban mega-church opened a satellite branch near downtown Minneapolis. Them I don’t mind seeing taxed as I figure they don’t do anything yet get all preachy and political.

          • Soren456

I favor a tax as incentive to do good.

Full taxes for all income and property like any other business, but forgiven incrementally for each proven social benefit performed by the church.

They could get their taxes down to nothing if they actually did the work.

    • Cuberly

One of the atheist podcasts uses snippets of that as a bumper, it’s one of the most despicable things I’ve ever heard.

    • ZhyKitty

      How utterly repulsive! OMG!

    • MattPS

There must be some way to convert that ill-gotten mansion into something that will actually benefit society: How about a halfway house for recovering religious addicts? Or even better, for children who’ve been exploited by religious organizations against their own wishes?

    • Sashineb

And then there is this parody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHNxHSifn58

    • Michael Abbett

They’re all a bunch of disgusting parasites.

  • They better install some overflow urinals for that grave site.

  • Cackalaquiano

My dumb brain looks at the picture of that mansion and goes “does that roof actually shed rainwater correctly?”
    That’s how ADD I am folks…

My mom had polio at two years old, worked tirelessly as a farmer’s wife, and kept and cared for lots of abused foster children. She went to SF Gay Pride with us and became very pro-LGBT as she aged. She died this weekend at 80 years old and I’m never going to be the same again. I lost my best friend. I wish I could tell her how much she meant to me.

There’s no one like momma. When they leave they take a piece of us with them.

        • Goodboy

My moms prepping her departure. She has dementia that’s steadily getting worse every year. She’s already half gone. The person she was has completely disappeared in 5 years time.

          • ZhyKitty

That’s such a cruel and horrible disease.
I’m so sorry to hear that that’s what your mother and your family is dealing with, bless your hearts.

          • erstegeiger

My mom is not as far along as yours but it’s a heartbreak non the less. The only thing I hold on to was that her mother even when non verbal was still basically happy. Doesn’t mean my heart is breaking any less, but helps to think if she lives that long, she will will be basically happy.

          • Goodboy

My Grandmother had dementia too. Like yours both are relatively happy. I joke sometimes that forgetting some things would make me happier too. It’s a different kind of happiness I guess.

Kidding aside it would be nice just to talk to her normally again.

          • jo gerardo

I retired from my first career to become an RN, knowing I’d be caring for my in-laws. We’ve lived together for almost 20 years and I’ve been their full time caregiver for 15. She’s lost a lot of overall function but we’ve developed a sense where we can communicate with each other. It’s hard work, but it’s another set of parents I never thought I’d ever have the pleasure and privilege of knowing. She also laughs at my horrible jokes and loves my singing.

    • Cackalaquiano

I’m so sorry. She sounds like she was a beautiful woman. I wish you strength and peace.

    • Spongebob CrankyPants

      So sorry for your loss.

    • Gene

(HUGGGS)…you have always presented yourself in a kind way.. a decent way..

While its not a set and fast rule, as a rule, we learn our kindness and decency from our mothers. I never met her, but, all of us here, and all you interact with, get the benefit of the life she lead, and her good spirit, via you

I am so very sorry for your loss…its a loss, mourn.. yet remember, as I do of my late parents; the best parts of us that make us who and what we are…thats them. and we carry that bit of them with us, always
      hug
      Gene

      • Gene

it has been 3 and a half years for me….feels like yesterday.

I still mourn her. She was funny, and kind, and brave. She left me notes..instructions, more or less, for the rest of my life. Dad did the same, but hers were “open and read them all now”. The box sits next to the near empty one dad left…but, hers, when opened, still smells of Chanel No. 5.

focus on the happy memories SoCalVet…I wont lie and say it gets easier, but, the pain, changes, and becomes more bearable.
        again…hugs

    • Joe in PA

Thank you for sharing that, that must have been hard. Big hug!

So sorry to hear, Tom, she sounds like she was a wonderful loving mother. And she raised a damn good kid.

    • Todd20036

She lives on through you. As long as you are fabulously true to yourself, the most cherished parts of her will continue though you…

    • GayOldLady

I’m so sorry SoCalVet, but glad that you have wonderful memories of her beautiful spirit to move forward with you. I know it doesn’t seem possible right now but it does get better. Peace to you and your family!!!

    • abel

A mother like that surely knew how much she meant to you. But we never stop grieving in a sense. The intensity ebbs, but the loss is with us always. Remember to be grateful for who she was and what you had.

    • MarkOH

” I wish I could tell her how much she meant to me.”

She knew, trust me, she knew.
I am sorry for your loss. I lost my mom 8 weeks ago. You will experience what a minister friend of mine calls “emotion ninjas” where, out of the blue, you will hear / see / smell something that reminds you of her and go to pieces. Embrace it – it’s the healing process. You sound like you have GREAT memories of a truly loving, wonderful woman. May she truly rest in peace.

      • CanuckDon

My mother, after finding out my ongoing molestation by a neighborhood man included oral sex, forbade me to ever kiss her with “that mouth” again. That was in October, 1970. She died in February, 2009. I never did kiss her again. In fact, in October, 1985, I walked out on that family, not seeing, or speaking, to any of them until 2000, when I went into heart failure the first time.

      • David Walker

I never cease to be grateful that I made it through childhood and youth without the horrors you and others share. I wasn’t speaking to my father when he died…it was for a good reason and I have never felt guilty about it. It needed to be done. I hope you and your heart are OK now.

      • Goodboy

My Mom has made allot of mistakes in her life and I’ve forgiven every single one of them. However, she would never do something like that.

        Really sorry to hear that.

Not everyone comes up a winner in the Family Lotto™… Perhaps that’s why Armistead Maupin had to invent “logical” families — as an antidote to some of the biological ones…

      • Gene

that…well..that is heartbreaking. I cannot imagine it, and I respect you for surviving it all.
no child should ever be abused…and a mother is supposed to be the safe harbor when all other harbors are closed

    • David Walker

That’s horrible, SoCalVet. That is not going to be something you’ll “get used to.” My mother died in 1985 and I still think about here every day. At some point it becomes less sorrow and more pleasant and good memories. She even makes special guest appearances in my dreams. No, it’s not easy, not when you love her as much as you do. Missing her will not go away, but the grief and misery will subside. What you need to know is that she had knew what you thought of her. How could she not? Know that.

    • Jamie Brewer

Thank you for sharing, so sorry for your loss. This quote from the book, “Let Us Build Us A City. Eleven Lost Towns of Arkansas” by Donald Harington pretty much sums up the best we can hope for. An elderly woman ended an interview with one of the most insightful lines I have ever read. She simply said, “I want to believe that years later on you’ll still think about me.”

This is a person I have never met, but I have used her insight more times than I can remember. I’m certain your mom has had the same effect upon many.

    • 2patricius2

      Thanks for sharing.

I’m sorry. It’s hard to lose someone we love deeply – someone who loved us deeply as well. It takes time to heal. And even healing doesn’t take away all the sense of loss. I think of the words from the play I Never Sang for My Father: “Death ends a life. But it does not end a relationship.”

I’m sure your mother would be pleased with your kind words about her. And though I don’t know you personally, I suspect she knew how you felt from things you said to her and did for her while she was alive. I wish you well.

    • Ian

You described a life well-lived, full of love and compassion. I’m deeply sorry for your loss.

    • Sashineb

I’m so sorry for your loss. I know how hard this is on you, as my mother died almost ten years ago. Wishing you the best during this very difficult time.

      Bless your heart, honey.
I’m so very sorry for your loss. <3

As a Mother, I can tell you that she knew how much she meant to you and how much you loved her. It's always nice to hear it from our children, of course, but we know without it being said. Know how we know? We know because we know how much you mean to us and how much we love you, and we know you feel the same way, *big mama bear hugs*

      • Joe in PA

I hope SoCalVet is re-reading all these wonderful messages and takes comfort. Yours is especially sweet.

I wrote my mom a letter years ago, telling her how much I loved and admired her. I never knew she kept it in her purse for years. It was included in her casket.

Damn, those onions are kicking in. :_(

        • GayOldLady

I’m glad you did that for your mother Joe. Her carrying it in her purse shows that it was a cherished possession.

    • bambinoitaliano

She knows. Otherwise she would not have gone to pride and support the LBGT community. Her love for you goes beyond that reaches the others. You should give yourself some credit that you might be the one who inspire her to do so.

    • Smithbc

Sorry for your loss. She sounds like a wonderful woman. She certainly deserves to be remembered today more than the old hag above. I lost my mother in 1996. I never got to tell her how much she meant to me and its devastated me.

    • Queequeg

I’m very sorry to hear that. I know what it is like to lose your Mom. You have my condolences.

    • Raising_Rlyeh

I hope it was peaceful. My mom passed away last Thursday from a heart attack that killed her almost instantly.

      • Robincho

I don’t mean to sound callous, but after watching my poor mother arm-wrestle lupus for years and years, your news is mouthwatering to me… I still wonder which is better, a lightning bolt or quicksand…

I hope, for Jan’s sake, that there is no afterlife. Because Jan would have to explain why she spent money raised, under the guise of ‘charitable assets’, on herself. A $50 million jet, 13 mansions and a $100,000-mobile home for her dogs

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

Nice mansion. Too bad so many christers fall victim to these scam-artists and charlatans. But then, they already choose to believe a helluva lot of utter nonsense, so it might be they are genetically predisposed to “victimhood”.

If they are dumb enough to send the money in, folks like her don’t need a genius IQ to take it — TAX FREE!

Remember, the “Marks” that are bamboozled by a Grifter are always motivated by they’re own selfish reasons, be it a quick buck or “salvation” for themselves.

    • Dramphooey

All confidence schemes are based on some idea of getting rich quick usually by some underhanded means. While basically performing a magical ritual to obtain wealth or power isn’t quite the same as trying to sneak money out of Nigeria to avoid taxes it is still based on the idea of reward while not contributing to society.

I saw a tv expose on one of the home. you kind of nailed it..except that they were as clean as operating theatres…and, some of the furniture inside…antique and very beautiful…but set in a garrish setting, which ruined the effect.

and several white baby grand pianos. why white…? dont know, but, she seemed to prefer those. Oh, and lot of Thomas Kincaid.(you are SHOCKED at that, I am sure)

    • studd55

Jim Baker is back and in business again.

There is no end to the stupidity of people who fall for these age old religious scammers.

      • I’m not sure how much of it is stupidity and how much is lonely elderly people who are afraid of dying.

Yes, Jim Bakker is back. Not only is he a crook, he’s a convicted criminal. And yet he’s on tv selling survivalist rations to the gullible. (Note: you can get everything he’s selling a lot cheaper, not that you need it.)

        • William

I might need a stash of Mac ‘n Cheez food product on hand for the November elections.

        • Schlukitz

Howard J. Ruff, the noted Mormon gold bug runs a similar scam.

While he does not use the fear of god to fleece his believers, his message is one of doom and gloom and based on the fear of impending financial collapse in the USA which is just as effecting in getting the sheep to part with their fleece.

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Ruff

Nearly forty years have passed since his first prediction of total financial ruin for everyone except those who read his Ruff Times, bought his books and followed his advice (How to Prosper During the Coming Bad Years: A Crash Course in Personal Financial Survival. (1978) and like the second coming of Christ, it still has not happened. In all fairness, however, there is a higher possibility of financial collapse in the USA occurring before Christ returns to earth. 😉

He hawks everything from precious metals to survival food, guns and ammunition and everything in between and earns handsome commissions from the sale of products from the companies that he promotes.

Interestingly, he accepts the very same currency (US bucks) that he says will fail the rest of us when financial Armageddon arrives.

          Hmm…..

          • William

Those Dollars are quickly converted into Swiss Francs when they are deposited offshore.

I saw one of those asshats (it might have been Ruff) explaining why people needed to buy commemorative gold coins, purchased from him at a hefty markup. Apparently when the shit hits the fan, Krugerrands or Canadian Maple Leaf gold coins will NOT be accepted anywhere. Only Chinese made gold Mickey Mouse coins, or some such shit will have any value.

          • Schlukitz

Not to defend Ruff, but he was a big pusher of Krugerrands and Canadian Maple Leaf gold coins, along with junk silver (pre 1964 US coins) as survival currency.

I have, however, seen some of the advertisements for commemorative gold coins.. The amazing thing is, they sell because of fear or the unknown.

Fear is the most amazing marketing tool ever devised by man to sell shit that no one needs. LOL

    • Schlukitz

Well, you know the old English proverb.

“A fool and his money are soon parted.”

      • Ben in Oakland

a snake and his oil are soon parted.

    • William

I watched a few minutes of Pat Robertson’s 700 Club this morning. The featured story was about a broke couple, the husband was out of work. Despite all their hardship, they continued to tithe and gave their last 50 bucks to the ministry. Then, Shazam, all their problems were solved!

      • Schlukitz

I’ll bet dollars-to-donuts, that good ole Pat, knowing full well of their financial hardships, didn’t refuse it while saying “Thanks but you need this more than I do” as he handed the fifty bucks back to them.

      • I’m not the least bit surprised. And as others have pointed out, it’s a textbook scam. it’s an appeal to selfishness disguised as altruism. Pigeon Drop. Spanish Prisoner. I’m sure there are others.

  • Oscarlating Wildely

$50 million jet, 13 mansions and a $100,000-mobile home for Mrs Crouch’s dogs.
She scammed enough cash for 13 mansions and the equivalent for her dogs. Her. Dogs.
I suspect I am supposed to feel sympathy upon her death. I guess I’m supposed to care about her family’s loss or her aged Easter Egg Wannabe self. I am supposed to give a shit about her life. I don’t. Maybe for her dogs but that’s stretching it.

1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.

Knowing what we know about these Jesus-for-profit grifters–and there are still hundreds of them active even today–it’s hard for me to feel an ounce of pity for anyone who is stupid enough to give their hard-earned money to them. They’re gajillionaires whose teachings run perfectly counter to the teachings of Jesus. If you’re too stupid and lazy to open up the bible and read what Jesus says about the wealthy and the hypocrites who pray in public, you deserve to be ripped off.

Apparently, God didn’t give her any fashion sense. Well, no matter to the fools who routinely parted with their money to keep her living high off the hog. It always reminds me that things don’t ever really change. The ancients also routinely sent their prayers to the gods by visiting their temples and having to buy a dove or some such animal for their holy sacrifice. The temples were places of great wealth. Today, many temples are on the telly and you donate electronically to gain the favor of the Lord. People obviously haven’t gained in smarts over the centuries. Seems that is man’s fate – to remain an eternal sucker for a shrewd talker.

The lie Satan would have you believe is that this false teacher is in heaven. I was sad when I heard she had died because I knew where she was. Jesus said many will say “Lord Lord have we not done many wonders in your name?” He will profess to them “depart from me, I never knew you”.

God is holy and righteous, He will judge the world in righteousness. The problem with mankind is God is good, mankind is evil. For God not to punish sin would make Him unjust. The wrath of God was poured out on Jesus Christ as a substitute for those who would turn from their sins and trust in Jesus Christ. Repeating a prayer, walking an aisle, etc. is not the same thing as saving faith, you must truly believe on Jesus Christ to be saved. Many people claim to be saved and argue against God’s Word about sin.

If you are a Christian and practicing fornication, homosexuality, drunkeness, etc., you’re deceived and most pastors won’t say that because they want to keep the crowds, fill the collection plate, etc.

1 Corinthians 6:8 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

You say you can’t help your sin, Jesus died to save His people from their sins. You say nobody’s perfect, but the difference between a Christian and a false convert is one loves and practices righteousness, hating the sin they once loved and fleeing to Christ when they fall, depending on His grace to endure. The false convert loves and practices sin and excuses themselves by saying You’re fine as long as you ask for forgiveness, the heart of a self-righteous hypocrite.

Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
