James O’Keefe: Trump Repeatedly Asked Me To “Get Inside” Columbia University And Steal Obama’s Records

The Hill reports:

Conservative filmmaker James O’Keefe claims in a forthcoming book that President Trump asked him to “get inside” Columbia University and obtain a copy of former President Barack Obama’s college records.

O’Keefe writes in his book “American Pravda: My Fight for Truth in the Era of Fake News,” that Trump “suspected Obama had presented himself as a foreign student on application materials to ease his way into New York’s Columbia University, maybe even Harvard too, and perhaps picked up a few scholarships along the way,” according to The Daily Caller, which first reported on the section of the book.

O’Keefe said he told Trump that the request did not fall into his line of work, but Trump reportedly continued to ask the conservative activist to find the sealed records at the university.

“Conservative filmmaker”?

Maybe he will get a visit in the night and we will never have to hear about him ever again.

    Shades of Watergate!

    • clay

At least Nixon’s people were smart enough to hire (weak-ass) burglars, rather than a videographer.

      • Bad Tom

        Court convicted, weak-ass videographer.

So Trump was encouraging him to commit a crime. Let me guess, he also told him, “Don’t worry, I’ll pardon you.”

Ask someone with no credibility to dig stuff up – how does that make sense to anyone?

    • Galvestonian

It’s Trump … what the hell do you expect ? He has no sense, no morals, no feeling of guilt, he’s a sociopath, no feelings and dumber than a sackful of rocks – although surprisingly enough, when he’s naked he looks like a sack full of rocks — only flesh colored.

    • Dramphooey

It makes sense if you want them to find what you desperately want found.

Ask someone with no shame and only a passing relationship with truth, ethics, or legality to do something shady – while that’s abhorrent, it sounds like it makes reasonably good sense.

What, you expect him to ask someone with impeccable professional standards to try to pull that crap?

    • gaycuckhubby

He has credibility with Trump and lot of Trumps base. That’s the problem

Because there is no way a person of color succeeded on merit in the mind of a racist.

    • Uncle Mark

Trump just can’t believe that someone of color, modest background, and no money somehow became more successful and beloved than him. So much of Trump is projection. If he was certain that Obama was horrible in school, can you imagine how wretched the shitgibbon’s grades were? You just know that Trump did everything in his power to hide or alter his school records from the public before running for President

    • lattebud

Now if a state attorney general decides to pursue the case and brings O’Keefe in for questioning, or better yet the FBI, and explain to him that lying to them is obstruction of justice. “Now, Mr. Asshole, er O’Keefe, please tell us about your interaction with Mr Trump.”

      • gaycuckhubby

        Yes please!

    • clay

conspiracy to commit a crime is still conspiracy to commit a crime, even if the crime is refused, there’s nothing in writing, and no money was exchanged. I doubt an AG is going to feel it’s worth it to pursue, however, when the only witness is O’Keefe.

  • Alexander Stallwitz

On one hand, i am skeptical that O’keefe is telling the truth as he is a pathological liar. But on the other hand, this is Donald Trump and he is insane enough to do this. He hates Obama enough to do something this reckless and foolhardy. Its kind of sad i am inclinated to believe any story about Trump no matter how insane sounding.

    • olandp

You forgot to point out that the Dotard is also a pathological liar.

  • greenmanTN

I’m no Trump fan, but I wouldn’t trust James O’Keefe if he told me it’s Saturday.

    • Dramphooey

    • clay

“But, Mr. Trump, I’m a counterfeiter, a liar, not a burglar.”

    • Keroleen

That’s the angle that I’m wrestling with as well – who to believe when neither party has any credibility.

  • CharlestonDave

I have a new overarching theory to offer:

Trump has done so many illegal, sketchy (h/t for that perfect word, gaycuckhubby), offensive and disgusting things that he knows Mueller will have any amount of dirt on him. Consequently, Trump has decided to generate an unending stream of fresh new illegal, sketchy, offensive and disgusting things that are investigation-worthy, the strategy being to bury Mueller under an avalanche of more work before any “final” report and indictments can be offered. After a long period of no final report, Trump and his minions will increasingly argue that the investigation is never-ending and ought to be terminated.

I realize this is sort of a “you can’t arrest me, because I’m not done beating my wife” strategy, but something about Trump makes it plausible to me.

    What do you think?

    • gaycuckhubby

I think the results are exactly as you explain, but I don’t think it’s an overarching strategy. Trump’s not that smart. It’s just the way he operates, constant lies and distortions

      • CharlestonDave

You have a point. The fatal weakness of the theory I offer is that it assumes intelligence and rational action on Trump’s part.

        • gaycuckhubby

Pence might b the smartest (and most dangerous person in the WH)

          • canoebum

Pensa is no Mensa. He just looks smart in comparison.

          • David Walker

And THAT’s because Mother decides what he wears.

          • gaycuckhubby

True, Trump is almost making bush look like a decent person

    • cleos_mom

Upvoted, but it’s more likely someone else’s idea. Not that I’d be surprised if it were true.

    • canoebum

While The Orange Blob is busy with his little plan to undercut Mueller, Eric Schneiderman will indict him on money laundering, racketeering and fraud. He’ll be waiting for him in New York as the creature slinks out of the White House in disgrace.

      • JCF

They’d better be FUCKING sure to impound Trump Force One at the DC airport then!

    • Megrim Twist

I think this strategy worked well in the primaries and the campaign and, obviously, thorughout this first year. However, I don’t think it’s working so well anymore and, in fact, may not work now at all. The shitgibbon is toast (with apologies to Candidate Handwich).

    • JAKvirginia

A few years ago, I read one of Rushdie’s other books (not Satanic Verses) which was a delightful tale akin to something from Indian lore. The king’s philosophy for ruling was interesting (and I am paraphrasing a bit): You start your reign with chaos and confusion. Anything you do after that will seem reasonable.

That comes to mind in the Era of Trump.

    • Bad Tom

Mueller, being no dummy, will say “That’s plenty,” and file indictment after indictment.
      Because, Mueller is no dummy.

  • BlackGayVeganAtheist

When your request is beneath the dignity of James O’Keefe, you know you’ve really stepped off the deep end.

Trump “suspected Obama had presented himself as a foreign student on application materials to ease his way into New York’s Columbia University, maybe even Harvard too, and perhaps picked up a few scholarships along the way,”

Foreign students are sought by colleges because they do NOT get scholarships, but have to pay the maximum tuition rate. Otherwise, colleges can fulfill their diversity goals with US residents.

      • PlutoAnimus

Trump wouldn’t have the balls to call Nambia a shithole.

    • Daveed_WOW

That, however, is the thinking of the Middle American bigot.

    • HanyBaal

I can personally attest to that. As a foreign student in the 80s I wasnt even allowed to work off campus or in the many “work-study” subsidized jobs on campus. Nor was I eligible to any undergrad grants.

  • SoCalGal20

I know it’s The Hill and their coverage leaves alot to be desired but stop fucking treating James O’Keefe like he’s anything other than the hack propagandist he is. He’s not a filmmaker. He is not a journalist. He has ZERO legitimacy. He’s funded by the Mercers and shady GOP PACs and TRUMP. He is a liar. He fakes footage and presents it as facts. STOP TRYING TO MAKE JAMES O’KEEFE AND PROJECT VERITAS HAPPEN.

(This is not directed at Joe but at the shitty press that tries to legitimize this asshole.)

    • ChrisMorley

      The UK’s Guardian tries truth.

‘What O’Keefe’s video didn’t show was that Vera contacted police after the meeting.
The [$100,000] settlement, first reported by Wonkette, states that “Mr O’Keefe regrets any pain suffered by Mr Vera or his family.” It notes that the payment is “in no way representative of any actual or implied admissions of liability”.
The statement of regret seemed to be undercut by a statement posted Friday on O’Keefe’s website, Project Veritas, in which he calls the lawsuit “meritless”.’ https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/mar/08/james-o-keefe-settlement-acorn

      • SoCalGal20

That’s because The Guardian is a news org that actually does a decent job of reporting.

    • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

Technically, as much bullshit as “The Hill” spews, they’re attempting to legitimize “The Daily Caller”. Which is yet another in a long, line of “National Enquirer” wannabes that American trash desperately want to devour in order to deflect from their humdrum lives.

    • His background is basically High School Theater, which makes sense, given his antics are like play acting in High School Theater…

      • MonochromeMouse

My high school theatre (if it’s on a stage it’s spelled with an “re”) was made up of much better actors than O’keefe, he’s more like an extreme version of those youtube “prank” videos where some white teen pisses off a bunch of random black people as a totally not racist at all “joke”.

  • justmeeeee

That’s a good theory, except that US universities generally only take furriners if they can pay the full tuition outa der pockets.

  • canoebum

Isn’t this basically the same kind of crime as trying to hire someone to kill your spouse? Soliciting a felony?

    • Reality.Bites

Yes, but those cases only get prosecuted one of two ways:

      1. The contractor carries it out or attempts to and is caught
      2. The would-be contractor goes to the police and wears a wire.

If I give an interview today saying “five years ago canoebum asked me to kill his spouse and I said no” nothing happens to either of us. If I had evidence, like recording the conversations myself, then I’m implicated for not reporting it.

Um… technicaly asking someone to commit a crime, (i.e. stealing records from Columbia University) can be a crime itself. Provided O’Queef pursued that course of action, even if he did not get very far.

“…In civilian terms, if all you do is tell someone to commit a crime, and they do nothing, that is not a criminal offense. If either of you make any other steps toward the commission of the crime, then you are both guilty of conspiracy to commit whatever crime was ordered or planned.”
