Ted Cruz Accuses CNN Of “Extortion” Over “Threat” To Unmask Person Who Created Clip Tweeted By Trump

Via Mediaite:

Ted Cruz suggested on Twitter Wednesday that the ongoing debacle surrounding CNN’s apparent threat to reveal the identity of the anonymous Redditor who created the video depicting President Donald Trump beating a man with a CNN logo superimposed on his head.

CNN reporter Andrew Kaczynski put out an article on Tuesday in which he notes that Reddit user HanAssholeSolo issued an apology for the video “one day after CNN identified the man behind the account and attempted to make contact with him.”

Kaczynski detailed how his KFile team tracked HanAssholeSolo down, and said that CNN would not divulge his identity given his extensive apology — but added a caveat: that “CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.”

  • ConvivialVisits

GAH how is it people get this wrong so often?

What Ted Cruz asserts here is NOT extortion!

Extortion— threatening to withhold something from the victim to force a desired outcome from the victim.

Blackmail— threatening to disclose something about the victim to force a desired outcome from the victim.

      • April

I think that was left on the table in case this supposedly contrite reddit user posted more inflammatory posts.

      • RaygunsGoZap

Disagree. People are interpreting that as a threat but its more like this:

        – the identity of this individual is not relevant to THIS story (Trump’s CNN-assaulting tweet) but depending on the future actions of said individual their present and past actions may be newsworthy on their own and thus we may name that person if such a story should develop

That is no more a threat thank your local 7-11 reserving the right to refuse service based on customer dress, actions or state of sobriety

    • So the bully/troll gets outed due to some clever investigating, and other bullies/trolls on Reddit aren’t happy about it? Do I have that about right?

      Gosh it’s a tough world.

Let’s accept that his racist, anti-Semitic, bullying, threatening and otherwise anti-social posts were not intended as a serious expression of his opinion or intent to cause physical harm but merely a device to upset and intimidate others.
Does that make it OK? Hell NO

Outing trolls is always good – it lets other trolls know it can happen

    • John30013

For those who can’t read images, CNN’s statement:
“CNN decided not to publish the name of the Reddit user out of concern for his safety. Any assertion that the network blackmailed or coerced him is false. The user, who is an adult male, not a 15-year-old boy, apologized and deleted his account before ever speaking with our reporter. CNN never made a deal, of any kind, with the user. In fact, CNN included its decision to withhold the user’s identity in an effort to be completely transparent that there was no deal.”

Uday spreading misinformation? I’m so shocked.

      • Todd20036

Better misinformation than elephant offal, I suppose.

        • Dazzer

Man, elephant offal serves a purpose in the progression of human life if it’s used in time.

Elephant shit is also useful in so many different situations.

Uday’s misinformation serves no such useful purposes. He’s literally less use than elephant shit.

          • David Walker

My mother swore by elephant shit to fertilize her roses. Whenever a circus stopped in the area, she’d be there at clean-up time, bushel basket in hand. Her usual fertilizer was horse shit (we were in an Amish area, so there was never a shortage), but to hell with the horsies when the circus came around.

          • doninkansas

Here in Topeka you used to get any kind of shit from the zoo. Elephant was the most popular and used for fertilizer, lion was 2nd best and used to keep deer out of gardens.

Years ago I had to drive through the wilds of New York state a fair amount and I came across this roadside delight: Wild Thyme Honey House.

          • Dazzer

Where I live in London there’s a police station with horses and a riding school nearby.

I’m a big believer in horse mature as a fertiliser – but it has to ferment for six months at least, otherwise it’s too acidic.

The riding school just dumps all its horse manure in a part of the yard and tells you that if you want a fertiliser, you should always take it from the bottom of the pile and mix it with your compost. They don’t charge for it – they’re just delighted that people take it away.

The police station charges for manure and has no idea why people want it.

Elephant manure is a lot less acidic than horse manure and only takes a couple of months to rot down. Also, if you use it, it scares cats – so they don’t crap on your plants so much. (I have no problem with cats – but they do crap in the most inappropriate places when it comes to gardening.)

          • acde

Elephant dung is actually useful in providing an ecosystem for dung beetles to live and feed in – providing FOR other life. That’s more than Uday can do or does.

The CNNBlackmail hashtag was a bot-driven campaign. Not an exaggeration, someone paid good money to get trolls and bots to spread this. They also tried to push the lie that the spurce was 15 years old.

The WH and Trummy are prepping for a disaster, so they’re pulling out all the dirty tricks and lies to defame the media before CNN reveals those damning transcripts.

And this is a nice distraction from the fact that Trummy is going to give Daddy Putin all the concessions he wants on Friday when they meet. Because someone hasn’t given their Sugar Daddy what he was promised yet.

  • David Walker

I anticipate the negative reactions to this, but I can’t help thinking that the anonymity of the intertubez is a major factor in this…and knowing that you’re probably not going to be held accountable for what you do. I do enjoy the creativity used in finding the right name and the right avatar. A private site I visit has a newsletter, for which I interviewed guys about their chosen names and it really was fascinating. The avatars, for that site, pretty much spoke for themselves…which, in that case, is what they were meant to do.

For quite sometime I went the nom de plume route. I changed to my own name (and sometimes my own picture) because I decided I should be responsible for what I write. BUT THAT’S ME, all right? Sometimes fake names absolutely must be used for the writer’s personal safety. I get that. And other names are a show of creativity on the writer’s part. I get that. What I dislike is when the bullies harass someone, when this “in with the in crowd” asshole hides from taking credit for what he clearly thought would win him points. I come down on the side of anonymity, but accountability for one’s actions is vital. If you’re going to be an asshole, know that you’ll probably be found out.

    • Pat

When this story broke, I assumed the video creator was some kid on 4chan or reddit who did it for a goof. I don’t go near them or their /pol subreddits b/c people are genuinely crazy, it’s depressing how much so.

But it turns out this idiot is a middle aged vet with too much time on his hands and no apparent life who also posted a ton of racist crap and a meme with every Jewish staffer and journalist from CNN with a Star of David next to their head shots. Considering the death threats and anti Semitic harassment that online journalists and their families endured for the past ten months, and the increasing boldness of these misfits, plus the spectacle of a reporter getting body slammed and the anti press rhetoric from Trump and his asshole followers, I can really understand CNN’s position. Cruz might look up the definition of free speech. It doesn’t say there won’t be consequences or promise anonymity.

I have a FB account with my real name, but I’ve removed every single item that could point to my location, plus I use a VPN. All it took was one online harasser who bragged about locating me in 5 minutes and coming for me. I’m sure FB did nothing about my report. And on Twitter, another asshole warned me to stay out of it I’m over my head when I wrote a supportive comment to a journalist who was sent a stereotypical antisemitic photo of a Jewish man, a gas chamber and a swastika. Cockroaches like them deserve the light.

    • Jukesgrrl

You might feel less inclined to use your real name (1) if it were less common than David Walker and (2) if you were a woman. I’ve already dealt with two stalkers in my life. I’ve also been the victim of a home invasion. I don’t need any other violence in my life.

      • David Walker

Absolutely, and that’s one of the reasons I come down on the side of anonymity. It seems like nothing can be 100% good anymore. The webz offer us anonymity, but that gets turned around for really shit reasons. I’m sorry you’ve had the experiences you’ve had.

I may be more than usually dim today, but I don’t really understand this. Who is CNN extorting? What are they trying to get from this person NOT to reveal his name? Don’t they have the right to publish or not publish as they see fit?

If they’re trying to get the guy not to diss CNN again, isn’t that blackmail rather than extortion? And why would CNN care if someone criticizes them? They get that all the time.

And why should this guy apologize? Didn’t it become prominent because drumpf retweeted it? Isn’t that the story? This guy was just another crazy person with access to a keyboard till drumpf made him a celebrity. Plus, with all the death threats that the drumpf supporters rain down on anyone, couldn’t it be seen as somewhat protecting an idiot?

Why bother with all those keystrokes when the writer could have just written, “You won’t believe what Ted Cruz pulled out of his nose this time!”

  • Cuberly

Well, he hasn’t been getting any attention lately. Any attention he has received has been embarrassing or negative.

Guess he felt the need to send a lie or two to his just as crazy followers.

  • Just points up the fact that people like Cruz and 45’s audience base all follow the dictum “do as I say, not as I do.” #transparent

  • kaydenpat

So nice to see Cruz going all out to defend a bigot.

  • Uncle Mark

Yet nary a word from “virtuous” Ted when Morning Joe & Mika were being extorted by Dear Leader and the Enquirer.

  • Jukesgrrl

To me, Cruz and CNN are both over-reacting. So a Reddit idiot made a stupid video. News at 11. The issue is: the President of the United States retweeted it. That’s the problem. Concentrate on Trump’s hatred of a free and open media.

    • ZRAinSWVA

Exactly. Just when I think he cannot go any lower, he does…

    • kareemachan

Sorry, it gets me that he’s all “I only did it in jest.”

Yeah, right. Given his history, I ain’t believing that for a split second.

  • Stubenville

Ted, you’re like that uncle who gets drunk at the open bar at every goddam wedding. Nobody wants to hear what you have to say; just sit the fuck down.

  • Alexander Stallwitz

I see Lyin Ted’s at it again

  • Friday

Christian Right Republican liars s think words mean only what they want, when they want, …No, Cruz-lawyer, that’s not what ‘extortion’ is.

Better question, Ted: why aren’t you prosecuted?

How could CNN have been foolish enough to act like the Mafia? In case you haven’t gotten a clue, the Second Great Meme War has begun. That’s not very auspicious for the Hillary camp because Reddit, 4chan, et al won the First Great Meme War, helping to put Trump in the White House. Looks like they will win the Second Great Meme War too. Let slip the frogs of war. (Reeee) Below is the first taste of what the Internet holds.
