Florida Politics reports:
On Sunday’s Meet the Press, Ron DeSantis defended his record in dealing with the state’s recurrent neo-Nazi protests under his governorship, saying he acted “swiftly and decisively.”
“Our record is second to none and we will continue to lead on these issues,” DeSantis told host Kristin Welker Sunday. Welker pressed DeSantis to respond to claims from Rep. Randy Fine, a former supporter of his who now backs Donald Trump, that DeSantis’ Florida turned a deliberate blind eye to neo-Nazi threats in recent months and years.
In the Washington Times, Fine wrote that he was “jumped by a Nazi in Florida” two weeks ago, and that’s “no big deal” in DeSantis’ Florida. The Governor dismissed the claims of the only Jewish Republican in the Legislature as an attempt to get “15 minutes of fame.”
The New York Times reports:
Mr. DeSantis has earned few plaudits for his response to a series of neo-Nazi demonstrations that have taken place in his state over the last two years. The hateful displays have included masked men marching and chanting “Jews get the rope” and banners with swastikas hung from highway overpasses. Unlike other prominent Republican politicians in Florida, the governor stayed silent after each incident, making no public statements.
When pressed, he has said that he did not wish to draw attention to people he considered provocateurs, and claimed that those calling on him to denounce the groups were trying to “smear” him by association. But his adamant, ongoing refusal to condemn the public activities of neo-Nazis has angered and confused many American Jews while highlighting what critics say is his tendency toward obstinacy.
As I’ve mentioned here many times, the above-mentioned Randy Fine is one of Florida’s foulest and most viciously anti-LGBTQ legislators, which is really saying something.
Fine appeared on JMG when he called for felony charges after Florida Democrats staged a sit-in over the racist US House map submitted by DeSantis.
And before that, he appeared here when he threatened to defund a Florida Special Olympics event and called a local school board member a “whore” because she’d been invited its fundraiser gala and he was not.
Fine was a sponsor of the bill that stripped Disney’s self-governing status. His family owns annual passes to the “woke” theme park giant. Fine is also a sponsor of Florida’s law criminalizing drag shows in view of minors.
He recently arranged for a Florida town to honor a war criminal who was convicted of executing four Iraqi prisoners. In April 2023 he declared, “Damn right, we ought to erase” LGBTQs.
