The Quantum Leap episode takes place in 1964, at a military academy where a secret gang has been beating up gay men, and it touches on issues about coming out; whether gay people really affect military effectiveness; how the gay community relied on underground newspapers to connect in the 1960s; and even the Stonewall Riots that would come five years later. And it aired at a time when the country was first debating Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, so it’s closely connected with the fight for equal rights that we are STILL dealing with.
