Ivanka: Arming Teachers Is Not A “Bad Idea” [VIDEO]

Politico reports:

White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump on Sunday did not fully advocate arming educators — but didn’t break with her father, President Donald Trump, saying it’s “an idea that needs to be discussed.”

“Obviously, there would have to be an incredibly high standard for who would be able to bear arms in our school,” Ivanka Trump said in an interview with NBC News that aired Sunday during her trip to the closing ceremonies at the 2018 Winter Olympics.” But I think that there is no one solution to creating safety.”

Trump didn’t break from her father though, and continued to say that qualified educators who are capable of carrying guns “is not a bad idea.” “I think that having a teacher who is armed, who cares deeply about her students or his students and who is capable and qualified to bear arms is not a bad idea, but it is an idea that needs to be discussed,” she said.

So, an armed man barged into a church building in Amarillo Tx on the 14th and held 100 people hostage. Some church folk managed to successfully wrestle the gun away from the attacker somehow and when the police arrived at the scene, they shot the good guy who was holding the gun.

  • marshlc

So this insane idea seems more reasonable than background checks and bans on certain types of weapons, even though those measures are supported by a large majority of the population, including gun owners.

I’m sorry, but it can’t just be money that the NRA is holding over the heads of these people. They’ve got to have incriminating photos, or their loved ones held hostage, or something.

Because – I might be wrong on this – I have a memory of seeing what kind of donations the NRA has made to individual legislators, and it’s just not that much money. In the 20,000 dollar range, not the 2 million dollar range. As I say, I might be wrong on this, my memory is kinda vague. But anyway, it can’t just be money, the behaviour of the lawmakers is just too remarkable for it just to be money.

    • Friday

There’;s not just the direct money of course: the NRA also spends millions and millions a year both promoting unfettered access to military weapons as some essential right that is ‘threatened’ by those who oppose Republicans, and all the hatreds that make people feel like they might need the things.

    • Scout

I”ve recall seeing listings of the NRA donating millions to individual repubicans and 30 million to Trump. I just did a quick google search and did find this:
      http://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-hiltzik-nra-politicians-20180215-story.html

We’ll assume Rubio’s grief is genuine. But we wonder if, when he’s at home at night, he’s comforted by the thought that he’s one of the golden boys of the National Rifle Assn. Over his legislative career, Rubio has been the beneficiary of $3,303,355 in campaign spending by the NRA. That haul places him sixth among current members of Congress.

I expect that if we did allow it, once the casualty rate increased they’d just blame it on Liberals anyway because the teachers weren’t given actual U.S. Military weapons, including explosives.

“They have bump stocks, our teachers get M-4s! Gotta stay a step ahead of the crooks! And since automatic weapons are good enough for teachers, they’re good enough for you! Get your fully automatic, belt-fed, weapon at your local Walmart. God bless ‘Murica!”

“an idea that needs to be discussed.”

Idea’s that shouldn’t be discussed? If women accusing her father of sexual assault should be believed.

In an interview with NBC News that aired Monday morning, Ivanka Trump, a senior adviser to President Donald Trump, criticized reporter Peter Alexander for asking her if she believes the women who accused Trump of sexual misconduct.

“I think it’s a pretty inappropriate question to ask a daughter if she believes the accusers of her father when he’s affirmatively stated that there’s no truth to it,” she told Alexander when he asked if she believed her father’s accusers. [TPM]

    • muffler

And rightfully so. It’s a crime family.

  • #DJTK5F

Arming the White House domestic staff is not a ‘bad’ idea either.

  • RJ Bone

I keep wondering if their obsession with arming everyone is encouraged in their subconscious by the Cold War. We “survived” and the “bad guys” gave up. Also, we have the largest military budget on the planet and we’re not messed with usually.

So they have the “be the strongest asshole and no one messes with you” mentality. “See? It works!”

I’m thinking this in people who just love to go on about guns but don’t seem to have a reasonable explanation (greed, maliciousness, etc.) for it, mostly. That percentage that is usually so reasonable, until they pull a Glock out of their purse or the small of their back.

  • Jack

    Yes, it is.

50% of teachers quit within 5 years. Proficiency with arms takes practice. LEO have to train, practice, and be recertified. The same would be true of teachers. Where is all this money going to come from?

The cheapest solution is “gun control.” I cannot think of ONE reason why an individual, acting in a legitimate private capacity, would need an assault rifle. Ban their sale. Ban interstate transportation of assault rifles. Ban their manufacture.

And let’s not let the NRA get away with calling themselves the National RIFLE Association, when it’s the interests of the manufacturers that they represent. It’s the National Riflemakers Association.

    • muffler

When the NRA changed their motto in 1977 they went full 2nd part of the 2nd amendment. They dropped gun safety and sportsmanship for the “……the right to bear arms” They left out the well regulated militia part on purpose.

The NRA is a political lobby who has offices in washington pushing political agendas in excess of gun safety. One look at their ads and listening to their “CEO” (check that part out – a CEO) speak and you can see they are an organization promoting fear. It’s profit oriented and your safety gets in the way of their profits.

  • DaveMiller135

It’s not a bad idea; it’s a genuinely terrible idea. Romanticizing how much teachers care about their students is a terrible place to start from. Do we think ANY teacher has not gone home, at night, to punch the dog or binge drink, swearing that they would like to wring the scrawny little necks of those ungrateful wretches, and fantasizing about working in a grocery store?

I’m pretty sure Mrs. Dallinger and possibly old lady Wells would have joined in shooting at us, and I can think of plenty of others who probably wouldn’t have tried to stop it. And all of that is beyond the stupidity of just having guns around in the hormonal stew that is high school.

The one thing you can count on is that, should the Republicans get their way and arm teachers, none will be to be found to take responsibility, when the first intra-school shooting, or other completely predictable, guns in schools, disaster strikes.
