WaPo Blasts Trump’s “Hollow And Divisive” SOTU

From the editorial board of the Washington Post:

Have a president’s words ever rung more hollow? In his first State of the Union address Tuesday night, President Trump spoke of “what kind of nation we are going to be. All of us, together, as one team, one people and one American family.” Yet Mr. Trump could not avoid, even for an hour, lacing his address with divisive references to hot-button issues and graceless attacks on his predecessors: to “disastrous Obamacare,” “the mistakes of past administrations,” “the era of economic surrender” and more.

His desire for bipartisanship has not led him to negotiate with Democrats in good-faith on health care, taxes or immigration. His search for unity did not stop him Tuesday from taking a gratuitous dig at football players who kneel during the national anthem. As he took a victory lap on the economy, Mr. Trump displayed his typical indifference to the truth, claiming he “enacted the biggest tax cuts and reforms in American history.” They are not.

“Mr. Trump displayed his typical indifference to the truth…” Delightful euphemism. Too bad they have to deal in synonyms for “lies,” “lying,” and “liar.”

I thought Kennedy’s speech was well-written and delivered, but it was a bit too “lofty” for the times, imo. Democrats need to get tough. They need to call Trump out for the criminal racist homophobic sexual predator he is.

Otherwise, they’ll wander the desert for quite some time to come.

I used to have a green card. I paid a $250 “processing fee” for the privilege of acquiring it, and now it seems they’re not worth the plastic they’re printed on. Can someone confirm or deny if green card holders are still being deported by ICE? The US makes boatloads of money in “processing fees” every year.

I hope readers here are catching MSNBC’s Steve Schmidt’s take on the address. Wonderful.

Schmidt has become one of MSNBC’s primary truth-tellers. No frilly language from him. No dancing around the point. He tells it like it is.

    I love him.

    • GayOldLady

He’s one of my favorites from the right side of the aisle.

      • another_steve

One senses his hurt – his hurt in the knowledge that Trump is destroying the party he once loved and was proud to be part of. The party that once consisted of reasonable people who worked across the aisle to get things done.

        I feel for Schmidt, truly.

        • GayOldLady

          I agree.

        • FAEN

Has he left the party? I heard he did but not sure.

          • another_steve

I don’t recall reading or hearing that he did, but I’m not really sure. Maybe someone reading here knows.

Joe Scarborough officially changed his party affiliation to “Independent.”

          • FAEN

Which means he’ll probably vote for the GOP again.

        • BuckyB12

Sorry, Steve Schmidt is part of the gang that foisted Sarah Palin on us and believed she was qualified to be Vice President. All through 2016 he couldn’t quite bring himself to say anything against Trump because he was afraid of not being hired by any more Republican campaigns. He’s still a Repub.

          • another_steve

            Hear ya.

Maybe he’s feeling guilty now, which is why he’s become one of Trump’s most vocal critics.

    • Gustav2
    • CanuckDon

He and Rick Wilson. Makes you wonder how they compartmentalize their long-held Republican stance on everything that’s happened.

      • Steverino

I think what we are witnessing are truly patriotic Republicans distancing themselves from the un-American fascists who have taken over their party.

    • FAEN

      I tolerate him.

      • another_steve

He deserves points for being one of the last few Republicans who are good when it comes to LGBT issues.

Schmidt voiced his support for gay rights at a meeting of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay Republican group. He said: “I just wanted to take a second to come by and pay my respect and the campaign’s respect to your organization and to your group. Your organization is an important one in the fabric of our party.”

Schmidt said about his lesbian sister and her life partner: “On a personal level, my sister and her partner are an important part of my life and our children’s life. I admire your group and your organization and I encourage you to keep fighting for what you believe in because the day is going to come.”

In February 2013, Schmidt along with 74 other Republicans co-signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court of the United States in support of overturning Proposition 8. “The die is cast on this issue when you look at the percentage of younger voters who support gay marriage,” he was quoted as saying. “As Dick Cheney said years ago, ‘Freedom means freedom for everybody.’ ”

The post also published a positively fawning review of the speech by Torture Boy, Marc Thiessen. It’s worth a read just for how laughably he kisses trump’s ass.

However, he did have one interesting point: by calling out the heroes at the front of the speech, he got democrats to give (him) a standing ovation at the outset. If that’s the kind of sly manipulation it takes to make the guy seem like a unifier then go for it, Marc…

Please note – Trump is winning the propaganda war he is waging. His supporters believe what he says. And whether they should believe him, or whether he lies daily, doesn’t matter – they believe him.

All he and the other GOP politicians like him need is the support of those who agree with what they are doing and those who agree with what they say they are doing. We know those are two different things, but that doesn’t matter. Together, those groups are a majority in large parts of the country.

And recent polls show that the number of people who believe what they say about gay people, as opposed to what gay people are really like, is growing.

They are winning the propaganda war.

    • customartist

His supporters are Evangelicals. They are divorced from the Truth. They instead act upon Faith, both in their religious beliefs and in their political beliefs. They cannot learn, nor can they be reasoned with.

Democrats cannot overcome this dynamic until and unless they fight fire with fire, but unfortunately they have yet to come to understand this fact.

      • Steve Teeter

But the Evangelicals have abandoned their Faith! Or at least created a Trump-shaped cutout. Multiple marriages and divorces, serial adulteries, sexual aggression (“grab em by the pussy”), money-grubbing, cheating, lying…. Trump is the opposite of everything they said they stood for. But through him they get power, power to impose practices and beliefs on those they cannot win through persuasion. So they make exceptions for Trump, exceptions in rules that ought to be unbreakable.

We’ve always known they were hypocrites, but now they’ve made it visible for all to see. And so more and more people are stating the obvious, that Evangelicals have no remaining moral authority. They have squandered it all.

Recall that story in the Bible where the Devil takes Jesus to a mountain top, shows him all the nations of the world and says, worship me and all these will be yours. Jesus tells him to take a hike. American Evangelicals have been faced with just such a test with the advent of Donald Trump. They have failed it.

The looks. Teleprompter aside, he only looked to the Democratic side with Disdain, Arrogance, Spite, Haughtiness, Condescension. “See, I’ll toss you a bone.” But with string attached of course so he could take it back.

And the “Americans are dreamers too” remark: snotty, dismissive, cruel. SO despicably juvenile and uncalled for…I need a fucking thesaurus.
