GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz Invited Alt-Right Troll To SOTU

Twitter lit up last night when the infamous “Rage Furby” troll was spotted in the SOTU gallery and now we know how he got there.

The Daily Beast reports:

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), a conservative Republican firebrand, was the lawmaker responsible for inviting the controversial internet troll Chuck Johnson to Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.

Johnson’s presence in the gallery during the speech by Donald Trump raised eyebrows and immediately sparked questions over how a right-wing activist and blogger best known for attempting to dox the subject of the UVA campus rape story managed to get a ticket to the high-profile affair. Reached by phone on Wednesday, Gaetz confirmed that he was the one who provided Johnson with the ticket.

Gaetz told The Daily Beast that he and Johnson had no pre-existing relationship and that he provided him with a ticket to the speech after Johnson “showed up at my office” the day of the speech. The congressman said he had an extra ticket after his father came down with bronchitis and couldn’t make it. Johnson just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Johnson claims he was actually invited by Gaetz and several other GOP House members. Gaetz and Johnson have both appeared on InfoWars.

More from The Hill:

Johnson runs a crowdfunding site that has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the legal fees related to the white supremacist website the Daily Stormer, as well as other various figures in the alt-right movement. Johnson has also said that the actual number of Holocaust victims is far lower than the accepted total, and questioned whether gas chambers were used at Nazi concentration camps.

Johnson was banned from Twitter in 2015 after he launched a fundraiser to “take out” Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson. Also in 2015, Johnson unsuccessfully sued Gawker for $66 million over their report that he once pooped on the floor of his college dorm.

Last year Johnson and the homocon fake news site Gateway Pundit both falsely accused a Michigan man of being the driver of the car that killed a woman during the Nazi rally in Charlottesville. Printouts from Johnson’s site have reportedly landed on Trump’s desk in the past.

If they make a ruling that only strikes down Democratic gerrymandering in MD but leaves everything else intact, the only option next time Democrats get control is to expand SCOTUS.

Let’s crowdfund to help Puerto Rican refugees move to his district! I’m sure he would love the added diversity this would bring to the redneck riviera!

  • bkmn

Gaetz is a major Trump interference runner, just like Nunes. I hope they are both on Mueller’s radar.

  • Lizard

Related: While getting a haircut this morning, I overheard the three nice white ladies behind the desk having a conversation about how great it was to watch Nancy Pelosi pull faces during the SOTU and how they “really loved when [Trump] rubbed it in.”

No wonder they voted for him. He’s as publicly nasty and petty as they are in private.

    • Treant

And you still go there? 🙂

Although, actually, I’d probably find a new stylist. Mine has biracial children and tri-racial grandchildren and hates Trump so much you can feel gamma rays radiating from her when she gets going.

      • Lizard

I actually switched stylists a couple of years ago because she was the batshit crazy type of Republican who would whack my face with the brush when she got on a rant about “Oh-BAH-muh.”

My stylist right now is no Trump fan.

        • Rick Jackson

I told a dental hygienist to stop cleaning my teeth and leave the room. When the office manager came to inquire, I told her that the crazy Trump nut hygienist would never touch me again. I did not pay money to have to listen to that shit. The office manger apologized. I still go there and I have not had the experience repeated. If it did happen again I would do the same thing again.

          • Lizard

That’s particularly egregious because you can’t even defend yourself when they’re working on your teeth. You’re the definition of a captive audience.

Glad you stood up for yourself.

      • kcken

Right there with you. My haircut takes a little longer than normal, because we dump on Trump so much.

I want to believe that you (or I, or any of us, in a similar situation,) could have made some subtle comment to them that would have miraculously changed their world-view. sigh.

      • Lizard

As do I. I paid for my haircut and left; I had to get to another appointment.

Besides, I’ve pretty much written off Trump voters who continue to support him. If the past two years, particularly the last year, haven’t quelled their support, nothing I can say to them will change their minds.

        • Ninja0980

Look, Germans in the 1930s and 40s were ok with concentration camps.
Today’s republicans would be as well.

    • JCF

I know that feeling: when you run into unrestrained Deplorables (having the same skin color as they have, makes them think they can let loose). Last week at my favorite diner, two tables over: “Trump’s accomplished more in 12 months, than Obama did in 8 years!” You KNEW he’d just been watching “FOX & Friends”…

    • DavidOntario

I’m a stylist in a union type city across the river from Detroit. My manager is a Trump supporter but she couldn’t really tell you why. It’s really a matter of having the same opinion as her husband. I follow your politics kind of incessantly. My hatred for 45 runs deep and is well known. If a client says anything supporting 45 the subject is changed swiftly. I fear one day someone will feel the full wrath of my hatred for that putrid waste of flesh. I really feel for you guys. What a horrible nightmare.

So… Johnson paid $35 in hopes of getting his # nazi-name scrolled on TV but ended up actually attending thanks to Gaetz, and their only apparent connection is InfoWars. Huh.

Must process, beyond snark right now.

The “other” (good) Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs writes about this guy often.

  • PickyPecker

OT: Here’s a better furby for you to look at. Altho not a nazi, he does enjoy eating snow and ice; destroying sticks in the back yard; getting as muddy as possible; begging for biscuits and singing the songs of his people.
I took these yesterday. Paddington is now 7 months old; weighs in at 85lbs and is still learning things and being (generally) a good boy.

I use it in a thin spray to give the sprouting plants weak protection from fungal disease.

          • Dazzer

Treant, I was talking about you this afternoon with a friend.

I was recounting your excellence as a soap-maker and how I was jealous of your ability. I mentioned your cedar wood and vanilla soap as being one of your rare failures.

My friend thought it was her ideal of what soap should be and instantly made the connection between the two scents. It was her idea of heaven.

Just thought that you should know someone in a small corner of south-east London thinks you’re an absolute genius and really wants your soap.

          • Treant

It seems to be one of those “love it or get it the hell away from me” scents. I love it, and once I use up this current bar I’m going back to use another one (it’s a soap designed for late fall to very early spring when the air is dry in PA, so its season is coming to an end).

She and I love it. Most people are kindly saying “neutral” when they really seem to mean, “that disgusts me.”

But thank her for me. 🙂

(Soap making, BTW, isn’t terribly hard if you just use a boilerplate online recipe [check those, however, as I’ve seen plenty that are lye heavy or otherwise unwise]. Much of the artistry is just practice and you can watch technique videos online. My skill is just ten years of practice).

          • Dazzer

            I will tell her.

It’s just as well that I have no idea where you live because she’d probably hop on the nearest jet and stalk you.

I used your description of it as “a bakery in the woods” and she just looked at me blankly. “Who wouldn’t want to smell like a bakery in the woods?” she said.

As I said, she thinks you’re a genius.

          • Treant

Exactly, that’s exactly what I thought. “Who,” thought I, “Wouldn’t want to smell like you just discovered the forest witch’s house…and she’s making vanilla cookies?”

            Apparently just about everybody. 🙂

Lavender and wood scents go well, too…and actually, lavender and vanilla has its moments.

    • Cuberly Deux

      WOW has he grown!

      Who’s a handsome fella! Who’s a handsome fella…yep, you are…yes you are….

      • PickyPecker

…and still growing. Technically, he won’t reach mature size until about the 12 month mark (when he gets shifted to adult dog food). Right now, he is consuming about 8 cups per day of large-breed puppy food.

        • Cuberly Deux

Wow…..that’s not a doggie that’s a horse…lol….kidding. I love St. Bernards. I’ve never known one that didn’t have a friendly slobbery cute personality.

        • Dazzer

How much exercise does he need every day?

(Like everyone else here, I think he’s utterly gorgeous.)

          • PickyPecker

Not as much as you would think. St. Bernard’s are notoriously sedentary.

          • Dazzer

            Thank you.

I’m probably going to be moving home in a few months’ time and two of the first additions to my new place will be a dog and a cat.

My priority will be getting rescue animals, but after that I’m considering the types of animals I want to share my life with, so your information is important to me at the moment – and appreciated.

          • PickyPecker

Don’t shy away from the larger breeds you may encounter at shelters. They’re every bit as easy to care for as the smaller breeds…..and many times easier with regard to personality. My experience over the years with different dogs is that I will never have a small breed again.

          • Dazzer

I’d never really want a small breed. They tend to be too yappy and barky and protective.

I want a dog who is prepared to look me in the eye and say: “You’re a witless prick”. Perhaps that’s because until I looked after a dog, I’d always had cats who trained me to that point of view.

    • David

      So handsome!
