GOP Sen. Richard Shelby: I Didn’t Vote For Roy Moore, I Wrote-In Another Republican On My Absentee Ballot

The Hill reports:

GOP Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby said on Monday that he did not vote for Republican nominee Roy Moore in the state’s Senate special election. “No, no, no, I voted absentee. I didn’t vote for him. I voted for a distinguished Republican write-in,” Shelby told reporters when asked if he would vote for Moore, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women. Shelby didn’t say whose name he wrote in.

And in related news from the Daily Beast:

When retired Marine Col. Lee Busby read it was too late for a write-in candidate for the Alabama senate race, he said, “Hold my beer, we will just see about that.” Busby told The Daily Beast on Monday he is launching his long-shot bid to stop Republican nominee Roy Moore from reaching the Senate. “I have no idea if the allegations against him true or not, but I don’t see anything within his experience as a judge that qualifies him for the job.”

  • matrem

But did he actually vote for Moore? Lord knows he wouldn’t admit it if he did.

It’s also the party of John C. Frémont, who was himself a piece of work. A historian wrote something him that would fit Donald as well:

Neither misuse of Senatorial power in the pursuit of advertising, nor the creation in newsprint of a great public hero, is an invention of our age, which has not seen any betterment of the technique that erected [John C.] Frémont into a martyr — a figure of oratory and newsprint. That creation was almost enough to wreck the republic. It was enough to convince innumerable people born since the advertising stopped and its proprietors died, so that you will find it in the instruction given our children — that incompetence is courage, that self-seeking mutiny is statesmanship, that youth and purity of intention — if purity exists in the main chance — qualify a stupid man to lead armies and govern a nation, that martyrdom in headlines erases blunders and nullifies treason, that greatness is a loud noise.

No. He voted for the winner, since it won’t be the write-in.

In other words, if Moore wins, he voted for Moore, more or less

      • David Walker

Depends on the Democrats. If enough other people do a write-in, some people finally understand what’s going on, and Democrats of all colors, shapes, and sizes actually vote, there is a chance. I know, I know, those are a lot of “if”s, but why not? I’m willing to give up my feeling that Moore will win if some of the “if”s come to pass.

Kind of ironic being as how one of the main knocks on Hillary Clinton from the left was she being a “Goldwater girl” before she was old enough to vote.

        • gaycuckhubby

Yep. I thought that was one the stupidest things said about Clinton

          • margaretpoa

Almost as dumb as trying to hang every unpopular Bill Clinton policy around her neck while arguing that everything popular was Bill Clinton’s doing all by himself. Had a guy actually argue that Hillary Clinton not only wrote but voted for the Defense of Marriage Act. Reality doesn’t matter when it intersects with ideology in a negative way.

Wikipedia– “Shelby received his law degree from the Birmingham School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1961. After law school in 1963, he went on to serve as city prosecutor (1963–1971). During this period he worked as a U.S. Magistrate for the Northern District of Alabama (1966–1970) and Special Assistant Attorney General of Alabama (1969–1971).”

So, Shelby took a legal track like Moore’s, but without Roy’s odd military record and repeated stumbles. I wonder what (retired) Marine Col. Lee Busby thinks there is in his own background that makes him a better choice?

    • Reality.Bites

It’s not a high barre to reach, but perhaps he feels to run for office a judge should have been thrown off the bench no more than once, preferably not at all.

Hoping against hope, I should think. When they control the voting machines, it’ll turn out however they decide.

Hopefully Moore is too damaging and they actually throw it to Jones for a cycle.

      • another_steve

All of the Moore-hate (rightfully deserved) is only serving to mobilize his base. Trump has taught them: “When they hate me, they’re actually hating you.”

I anticipate a Moore win, by a very small margin.

        • Treant

I anticipate a Moore win, by a margin outside the recount level by exactly enough that there’s no chance any legal challenge would win.

  • Tom Furgas

Either Doug Jones winning in Alabama or another Republican flipping (it looks like Collins might be the best chance of that) will kill Trump’s tax plan. As it stands right now, Pence would be the tie-breaker.

        Maybe they’ll draw straws.

        • Treant

They’ve been playing Rotating Villains for a year, so they very well might. But so far, I think Collins has been left alone, so it also might be her turn.

      • ColdCountry

I will be very surprised – disappointed and furious – if Collins doesn’t vote against it.

    • Lazycrockett

I think Flake, Corker and McCain are the ones to watch.

      • AlternativeQuacks

Politically, I don’t think it’ll be Collins, Murkowski or McCain, because those were the three that stopped the Obamacare repeal. It’ll need to be somebody else or else they risk not looking like Republicans. Then again, Collins and Flake have said that they’re leaving and McCain said his cancer prognosis is bad, so maybe they won’t care.

    • OdieDenCO

I thought they bought murkowski. why is she shown pondering?

      • gaycuckhubby

She said she’s in favor of ending individual mandates in the ACA but has always said she is undecided on the full tax payments.
She has a lot of the same concerns as Collins has. I think in the end Murkowski will be a no

  • Natty Enquirer

    Frederick Douglass for Senate!

  • gaycuckhubby

I know we are usually cynical. But we should applaud this. He opposes Moore on principles so much that he essentially gave a vote to a candidate that he disagrees with on healthcare, abortion, judicial appointees, taxes, welfare programs, LGBT rights, immigrations and foreign policy.
    That’s huge!

We’re not completely sure that Flynn is dealing. Mueller cannot short-circuit Trump’s pardon power over Federal charges. He might have state charges, but…

Seems this is more about Keith needing to get out of The Resistance.

        • Treant

Agreed. The arguments just aren’t that great. Who says Dumpy can’t dodge seven incoming trains? He’s dodged hundreds by suing, lying, and relying on stupid people to believe his lies.

          • Natty Enquirer

And I don’t think he could resist the opportunity to showboat through an impeachment and Senate trial.

      • another_steve

I believe Trump will resign. His initial impulse was probably to order Mueller fired. For whatever reason (possibly, word that the DOJ under no circumstance would comply with such an order), the thug didn’t/hasn’t taken that route.

He’ll sign a tax bill later this year and declare victory. His low-info deplorables will applaud and declare him a victor over “the establishment.”

Trump will announce that he has achieved so much in his first year of being President – so very much – that it’s time for him to hand over the reins of power to someone else.

He’ll go back to Corrupt and Broken Capitalism – an endeavor he knows and loves so well.

        • Reality.Bites

This is certainly as credible as any other scenario.

But will Mueller go away if he resigns? Does Trump get to get away with it? Does Trump resigning do anything for Trump? Because he sure won’t do it for any other reason.

The lowest income earners across the board (the highest rows in the table) are contributing a positive cash flow to revenue, while the higher income earners’ numbers – lower rows in the table – being negative as they were, represents the outflow to them.

My mother would sometimes rant about the burden and ridiculousness of what twins go through. And her sister would say the exact same things.

I have a feeling my mother would look at twins that still have to be around each other 24/7 as being freaks, purely a side show act.

    Fun stats –
If you search for “Trump idiot” on Twitter, you get 59 tweets just within the last 30 minutes.
If you search for “Trump moron” on Twitter, you get 40 tweets within the last 30 minutes.
If you search for “Trump disgrace” on Twitter, you get 32 tweets within the last 30 minutes.
If you search for “Trump embarrassment” (this one comes up on auto-complete!) on Twitter, you get 34 tweets within the last 30 minutes.

So it would appear that ‘Trump embarrassment’ has historically been searched a lot, but ‘Trump idiot’ is today’s preferred phrasing.

I also recommend the graphic novels.

I’m liking the crossover (half-way thru), but not loving it. Quibbles: 1) generally, too dark (just visually: hard to tell sides apart often) 2) Would have liked the good guys to say WHY Nazis are horrible (i.e., there’s been no mention
of race/racism) 3) was really hoping Kara’s response to Alex&Sara’s (aka, assassin White Canary on “Legends”) drunken hook-up to be—from what I know of Sara (which I believe is sort of the bisexual cliche’ of “anything w/ a pulse”)—to be ala “My sister is very vulnerable now.
Mess w/ her, and I.Will.Break.You!” [Now, it COULD be such a scene is still coming. We haven’t seen Kara & Sara interact yet. Just Kara cheering Alex on: “Hey you had a wedding hook-up. No shame, Yay You!”]

I’m re watching Hidden Figures and the question came up of Grisham capsule sinking to the ocean floor, were the capsules reusable at this time?

    • Treant

Nope, the ablation of the heat shield effectively rendered the capsule non-reusable.

The issue was that the capsule came down by parachute…which means it still hits pretty hard. If it sank, the astronaut wouldn’t have any chance of getting out of it, and finding them would also be quite difficult.

      • Lazycrockett

ok, that makes sense, seems the movie was more concerned bout the capsule than the human.

    • JohnJay

All manned space capsules of the time were one-use only. The Space Shuttle in the early 1980s became the first re-usable spacecraft. (Unfortunately, the high expense and down-time for tile and engine refurbishment caused it finally to be abandoned). The only other reusable is the AirForce’s mini-shuttle research X-37B, and very recently, the Space X Dragon capsules have started to be re-used (as well as some of the recovered boosters).

Grissom’s capsule was found and recovered 38 years later.
