Mark Wahlberg: Forgive Me God For Boogie Nights

The Chicago Tribune reports:

It may have been a critical and commercial hit, but actor Mark Wahlberg says he’s prayed to God for forgiveness for his role in the 1997 movie “Boogie Nights.” Standing next to Cardinal Blase Cupich on Friday night in Chicago, Wahlberg, a committed Catholic, told Chicago Inc., “I just always hope that God is a movie fan and also forgiving, because I’ve made some poor choices in my past.”

Asked if he’d ever prayed for forgiveness for any movies in particular, he added, “‘Boogie Nights’ is up there at the top of the list.” Wahlberg — who famously portrayed porn star Dirk Diggler in that 1970s-set film — was in Chicago to support Cupich’s effort to draw young people into the church.

Wahlberg, who in 2015 enjoyed an audience with Pope Francis, has previously come out in support of gay marriage. But he said he had not discussed the issue with Cupich, who despite a more nuanced line than his predecessor, toes the church line that marriage is only between a man and a woman.

Calvin Klein underwear is a gateway drug.

    • Todd20036

It’s meh underwear. I wear wilder underwear… when I’m not commando

        Poorly made these days…

        • Adam King

Oh, I think commando has kept up its quality quite well.

    • Gerry Fisher

      Ha! Very good.

  • Chris

Without Boogie Nights he never would have broken through to the level he is at, he should be thanking God for Boogie nights.

    • Dayglo

Yeah, it’s like Linda Blair bemoaning “That crappy little horror movie was a bad career choice.”

      • Adam Stevens

        Perhaps not the best example.

        • CarbonMade

Or perhaps THE best answer! : )

      • Wayne

        Or Bruce complaining about “Jaws”!

        • RaygunsGoZap

LOL. Bruce made some real stinkers after that.

      • Charlie In SF

Suzanne Somers and Farrah Fawcet also come to mind.

    • andrew

If Calvin Klein hadn’t had the hots for Marky Mark, he would probably still be a street thug.

      • TrueWords

Mark was passed around in Hollywood…he had a look but no touch policy…he would stand around and pose and flex at pool parties for those in power…

    • TrueWords

Sounds like Mark is planning to run for public office…

Also how about forgiveness for viciously attacking another human being Mark…

    • Gerry Fisher

Agreed. His attitude is so disappointing. It’s so reductionist in a typically Catholic way.

    • Kruhn

I thank God every night for Boogie Nights!

  • Christopher
    • Joseph Miceli

I’d take Paul Rudd’s sperm contribution any time of any day. The man is still smoking!

Burt Reynolds was robbed for Best Supporting Actor – the Oscar went to Robin Williams for “Good Will Hunting”….

    • Adam King

Robin Williams was an awful, schmaltzy actor. Ugh.

      • pablo

He was good-really good-whenever he played a creep. See Insomnia, One Hour Photo, and World’s Greatest Dad.

        • Adam King

He always strikes me as “acting” and I can’t suspend my disbelief. I look at the screen and I just see Robin Williams, “acting.”

      • Sorry, but I have a soft spot for Dead Poet’s Society.

        • Adam King

Enjoy it! But I repeat, ugh. I hate that kind of thing.

  • Dayglo

Only the single best role Wahlberg ever portrayed. He should beg forgiveness for “Daddy’s Home.”

    • Tread

They made a sequel. With Mel Gibson. And he’s asking for forgiveness for Boogie Nights? Okay…

  • RyanInIllinois

    Oh for Christ’s sake.

That sounds like a form of mental illness to me.

      Sounds more like a solution.

    • TampaZeke

      They should ALL be committed!

      It is.

Another guilt ridden Catholic, made ashamed of their sexuality. Shocked I am. Just shocked!

I said, “You knew Jesus?” “Yeah,” he said “Thin lad, wore sandals, long hair, walked around with 11 other guys. Always came into the store, never bought anything. Always asked for water.”

Yeah, pretty to look at. Beyond that? Meh.

  • andrew

Wahlberg made a really bad choice when earlier, in his life, in a racial hate crime he seriously beat and injured an Asian man. I wonder if he has asked for forgiveness for that crime and I wonder, now that Wahlberg is a multi millionaire has he ever financially compensated the victim of that hate crime?

    • greenmanTN

To my knowledge he has never apologized or made restitution, only deflected it as a mistake of his youth.

      • Cipher

As a Masshole, I am familiar with this story. The assault conviction hit the press again when he made a formal request for a pardon. He eventually dropped the request. IN the process, he met with and apologized to one of his victims, Mr. Trinh.

Asian-American activist groups were upset and the whole thing just dragged something into the public eye that most people knew nothing about. Wahlberg acknowledged his principal reason for seeking the pardon was to pursue a concessionaire’s license in California for his restaurant business. ($$$).

One of the two men who were attacked supported the pardon. However, the application brought out the fact that this was not his only hate crime.

    • Tawreos

How could he feel guilty about violence when he made a movie showing off his best features in a movie about sex?

      • andrew

I have read that his best feature in that movie was a prosthetic penis, not Wahlberg at all.

        • Todd20036

That is correct. Wahlberg was not that endowed, only Dirk Diggler was.

        • Tawreos

I know, but I think his body has always been his best feature.

        • Adam King

It was a stupid-looking, rubbery, weirdly-colored prosthetic too. That movie would have been much improved by leaving that shot out.

          • Charlie In SF

If his were any good; they would have used it and not that weird piece of rubber.

          • robindaybird

a real dick would’ve gotten an NC-17 rating, which is a cinema kiss of death

        • Duh-David

And we all agreed that whoever made and approved that prosthetic, had never seen a large penis.

          • Bubba in TX

I hear that prosthetic penis technology has come a long way since that film.

        • Ragnar Lothbrok

Didn’t he write a book where he literally dedicated it to his Penis ?

    • kaydenpat

Great question. That Asian man was verbally and racially abused by Wahlberg and the attack resulted in loss of one eye. I’m not a fan of Wahlberg at all and can only stomach him if he’s part of an ensemble cast like he was in “The Departed” which is a great film.

  • HeyYouKidsGetOffMyLawn

    He’s a M E S S mess.

  • greenmanTN

What a coincidence. I was just thinking, “It’s been MINUTES since we’ve had a story about someone who needs slapping every hour on the hour” and here it is, something about Catholic who should be committed, Mark Wahlberg!

If you want to apologize for something, how about for blinding that Asian man you fucking shitbag?!

  • Blake Mason

OK Marky Mark… calm down… no need to be annoying in real life as well.

    • TrueWords

      Oh my I love this….

  • worstcultever

Gee, I’m glad the horror of a hit movie role keeps him up at night. Good thing he can sleep like a baby through these other memories (lest we forget) –

At 15, civil action was filed against Wahlberg for his involvement in two separate incidents of throwing rocks and shouting racial epithets at African-American children; the first incident was against two brothers and their sister; the second incident was against a group of school children on a field trip.[15]

At 16, Wahlberg approached a middle-aged Vietnamese man named Thanh Lam on the street, and using a large wooden stick, bashed him over the head until he was knocked unconscious while calling him a “Vietnam fucking shit”. That same day, Wahlberg also attacked a second Vietnamese man named Hoa “Johnny” Trinh, sucker punching him in the eye. According to court documents regarding these crimes, when Wahlberg was arrested later that night and returned to the scene of the first assault, he stated to police officers: “You don’t have to let him identify me, I’ll tell you now that’s the mother-fucker whose head I split open.”[16] Investigators also noted that Wahlberg “made numerous unsolicited racial statements about ‘gooks’ and ‘slant-eyed gooks’.[17][18]

For these crimes, Wahlberg was charged with attempted murder, pleaded guilty to assault, and was sentenced to two years in Suffolk County Deer Island House of Correction. He ultimately served only 45 days of his sentence,[17][19] but carries a permanent felony record. Wahlberg believed he had left Trinh permanently blind in one eye.[15][17][18] Trinh was interviewed in December 2014 by the Daily Mail; he revealed that he had already lost that eye during the Vietnam War, and did not know the identity of his assailant prior to being contacted by the media.[20]

In another incident, then 21-year-old Wahlberg fractured the jaw of a neighbor in an unprovoked attack.[21] Court documents state that in 1992, Wahlberg “without provocation or cause, viciously and repeatedly kicked” a man named Robert D. Crehan in the face and jaw while another man named Derek McCall held Crehan down on the ground.[22]

    • Dayglo

      Boston Strong.

    • zhera

And with that information, I totally understand why Wahlberg is so worried about Boogie Nights. As we all know, God forgives everything except sex, especially gay sex!

    • Nowhereman

Wow. I’ve never sought out his movies, but I’ll sure as hell avoid them now. What an asshole.

  • Gigi

Is he also embarrassed by the Ted movies? Would god approve of a foul-mouthed, sexist, misogynistic teddy bear come to life?

    • Todd20036

Any god worth his/her mettle wouldn’t mind at all.
The Christian snowflake god who cares about who consenting adults sleep with, but not pedo preachers, might have an issue or two

    • canoebum

And then lied about in publicity appearances, calling it “the first comedy in which the main character is animated”. This was a year after Simon Peg and Nick Frost appeared in “Paul”.

      • Gigi

Just between you and me, he was cruising me quite heavily at the gym when he was in town shooting a movie a few years back. And then there was the time he blind drunk on the Graham Norton show when he sat on Graham’s lap and played with his nipple. I think he’s asking god to forgive him for a lot of things. He is Catholic, so it makes sense I guess.

        Nipple grab @8:34 —

  • VodkaAndPolitics

Didn’t then “Marky Mark” do full on porn in the 90’s?!

    • Acronym Jim

I don’t think so, but he did get so drunk on a British chat show that he even went too far for Graham Norton. So, yeah it’s possible, but he probably doesn’t remember it.

    • Adam King

There was a lot of photoshopped porn on the internet back in the day.

  • Jmdintpa

another homophobic muscle boy who probably has some “hidden inner” feelings he is hiding. What an annoying fuck. Never cared for him back then dont care for him now.

    • Kissmagrits

Besides, his brother Donny can act circles around him.

  • TuuxKabin
  • kladinvt

Good grief, this guy has always been a major jerk; from attacking gay men on the streets of Dorchester, to strutting around in underwear, again to attract gay men and use them to gain fame, to this latest mea culpa he’s just a pathetic human being.

  • rextrek

Im sure IF he Knelt down Before the Cardinal – until “something” finally came up – Gawd would forgive him…….Never liked him……..he’s a “closet” homophobe – his so-called priest told him NOT to do BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN he was up for the part originally.

    • Acronym Jim

Thank heavens he turned it down. He was great in Boogie Nights, but that was because he had a good director who was able to exploit his lack of acting ability.

      • Adam King

So now he’s apologizing for what was probably the best role he’ll ever have.

        • canoebum

He was good in “The Departed”. That character was probably as close to the real Mark Walhberg as we’ll ever see on-screen. But then, Martin Scorcese may have had a lot to do with the quality of that performance as well.

      • fiizok

You have to see the cutting room floor footage from any of his movies to truly grasp his utter lack of acting ability. I was at 20th Century Fox when Mark was doing the remake of Planet of the Apes. I saw the dailies. Words can’t describe how appallingly bad it was. An empty cereal box would have been more compelling.

    • Todd20036

The fact is Brokeback Mountain would have been forever tainted if an anti gay bigot played the role of a gay, doomed romantic.

      • Phil2u

Surely, it was the other role …

        • Todd20036

It wasn’t the other role. And don’t call me Shirley.

          • Phil2u

Well, that would have been disastrous. Surely!

    • whollyfool

      Wow that was close then

    • Well then we all owe that priest a muffin basket because Heath and Jake were great in those parts. Markie Mark? Gag. No. He’s hot but that’s about it.

  • bambinoitaliano

What about the Vietnamese guy he blinded while being a racist as oppose to wearing a prosthetic dick?

  • DesertSun59

Something happened to Mark Wahlberg about 20 years ago that caused him to become addicted to a Bronze Age religious myth. Now, his addiction has permeated his entire brain and he ‘seeks forgiveness’. This sort of thing only happens to people when they have a massive break with reality.

So, what happened to Walhberg to cause him to see solace in a myth.

    • Todd20036

He may have felt guilty about attempted murder, but the guilt was too deep for him to do anything constructive about it… like pay restitution to his victim

    • Of all the things he’s done. You’d think he’d feel bad for assaulting Asian people. Now, that’s something to ask forgiveness for. He blinded one of them!

    • The_Wretched

A past of drugs, anger and assault. One of the selling points of xtian religions is that you get 3rd party forgiveness. It’s on my top 3 list of really bad ideas from religion (one size fits all sexuality and ‘sin’ being the other 2).

  • AJ Drew

Hmm, um Mark, I think a few other things should have come to your mind before “Boogie Nights”…

By age 13, Wahlberg had developed an addiction to cocaine and other substances.[13][14]
• Adam Stevens

Wahlberg, however, still has no problem KILLING people onscreen for children to enjoy the world over.

    • Adam King

      My first thought too.

  • netxtown

Wishing you didn’t after cashing and spending the check (plus those pesky residuals) only reveals the hypocrit.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

    Dear Mark Wahlberg,
Please give all the money you made from “Boogie Nights” and other bad choices to Anastasia Beaverhousen and I will forgive you.
    Thanks, Jeebus

      Yep yep.

Only after they have pocketed the millions for doing what they did. ;0

  • Reality.Bites

When’s he going to pray for forgiveness for his role in Wahlburgers?

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

(rolls eyes) I notice that religious people always fuss about the wrong thing. A god that actually gave a shit about people is not going to be pissed about you looking naked on camera but care more about people you actually hurt in RL.

Also Matthew 6:5-6 Religious people should know those verses better than me but they don’t.

Also, didn’t he marry an anti-vaxxer? If he’s helping her pimp her agenda, THAT’S something he needs to seek forgiveness for.

    • OdieDenCO

I’ve always been confused about the naked taboo. according to scripture we only put on clothing after disobeying god by eating the apple. Seems to me anyone believing in god should renounce clothing as the first step to redemption. 🙂

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

Also, I notice that they don’t have a campaign to put clothes on animals.

      • zhera

I for one am glad they don’t. Just picture Brian Brown and Bryan Fischer…

    • Lori

His brother married the anti-vaxxer—Donnie is married to that idiot Jenny McCarthy. AFAIK the model Mark married isn’t anti-vaxx.

And yes, a god who actually cared about people would be a lot less worried about Boogie Nights than about the hate crime Marky Mark committed.

      • Donnie is also a right-winger. Is Markie Mark going the same way? Gag.

  • Stev84

Sad to hear that his mind has been poisoned by religion

    • Phil2u

He seems to be a conflicted … soul ?

  • JoeMyGod

In 1991 Wahlberg performed at the Warsaw Ballroom, arguably South Beach’s most famous/infamous gay club, to support his hit record “Good Vibrations” – which heavily sampled disco legend Loleatta Holloway.

In unison my buddy Ray and I shouted up at the stage, “WHERE’S LOLEATTA?”

Wahlberg looked chagrined and said, “She’s not here, man.”

And that’s my only Marky Mark story.

  • Boy Elvis

When it came out everybody told me Boogie Nights could not be missed but frankly, I wish I had missed it. I’ve rarely seen a film that treated its characters so incredibly unsympathetically. Its message was that the porn industry was basically full of self-deluded losers. They were all pathetic and deserved little more than derision and laughter. I left the theater feeling diminished.

The film, to me, read as a scathing indictment of the porn industry. So what the hell is Marky Mark apologizing for?

  • Macho Catholicism is the worst. There’s seriously a bunch of knuckleheads who think that rosaries and confession are an expression of their masculinity.

    • Phil2u

It’s a Nor’east thing. Southern Rednecks are almost easier to deal with, more predictable at least.

  • One should look at his VERY DRUNK appearance on The Graham Norton Show (the best chat-show that ever was or ever will be) for a glimpse of his apparently very funny and quite sharp personality. He’s half knucklehead; half whimsical artist. I cannot make up my mind about him.

    • And he was verrrrrry friendly with Graham 😉

  • Daveed_WOW

I don’t get it. Forgiveness for what? He portrayed a fictional character with humanity and truth. I don’t think honesty and integrity are sins. Please don’t tell me he’s confusing the artwork with the artist. You can be committed to your religion and at peace with your humanity and the humanity of others.

Having said that, he’s dead to me now.

Incidentally, he has a history of violence, including a criminal record. Maybe that’s what he needs to be forgiven for.

  • MBear

Oh. Sad. Kinda liked him as an actor from his work in The Other Guys.

  • Starwind65

Marky Mark helping the Catholic Church bring in more young people to the church. What, the priests need more kiddies for their fun and games? And Mr Wahlberg is only concerned with a movie role? How about being more concerned in what the church screws up, pun intended, before he recomends it.

  • BostonBud

But no forgiveness for all the violence in his other films?

Ah yes, hypocrisy. must be a good Catholic Republican.

Huh? That’s a good movie. I have it on VHS tape, but not the DVD.

  • Lakeview Bob

Not a catholic but I thought that “confession” was all you needed and that you did not have to pray for forgiveness.

    • boatboy_srq

“Nothing you can do will ever be enough” is the basis for Catholic Guilt®.

  • ConvivialVisits

I don’t think God needs to forgive Mark Wahlberg for Boogie Nights.

No one ended up in the hospital after seeing Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights, after all.

  • Gerry Fisher

[heavy sigh] I’m so sick of “Chaucer’s Retraction” approaches to later life. No one thought that, in “Boogie Nights,” he was actually interested in being a porn star, or that he or the film advocated that porn is good (there were a number of brutal scenes in that movie). It was an acting *role*, and a role that demonstrated that sweetness and goodness can be found in sordid places, and that greed, ego, and drugs can undermine that inherent goodness. That’s a healthy message, IMO.

…but then I remember what it was like growing up Catholic. They use guilt to bludgeon and control people. Entrance into heaven is in a checklist of behaviors, some of them trivial or odd. I remember going to see “Life of Brian” as a teen, and then being confused as to why the Catholic Church “condemned” the movie, despite the film beginning by depicting the “real” Christ, which gave an easy out to the churches. They didn’t approve of anything that hinted at “pay attention to how things are interpreted” or “leaders can lead you astray” or “mob mentality operates in religion.” The movie’s messages hit too close to home, so they threatened people with “sin!” if they went to see it.

  • The_Wretched

Where’s the regret for Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch?

  • bobbyjoe

Wahlberg brutally assaulted two Asian men in 1988 and an African-American woman in 1986, and he’s spending his time praying for forgiveness for being in “Boogie Nights”? Good to know you’ve got your priorities straight there, bud.

I blame Calvin Klein for promoting trade to polite society.

  • David Kerlick

I’m sure there are cardinals who approve of his acting, and pay better.

  • EyeJelly

Disappointing to hear from an actor. In a hundred years, Boogie Nights is probably the only film he’s made that anyone will remember. If the goal as and artist is to make good art, then Mark should be grateful he’s been lucky enough to make some good art.

    • stevenj

And probably for the terrific cast and director.

  • Natty Enquirer

I thought it was a good film. A bit too long and rambling, and the prosthesis shot was unforgivable, but lots of fine performances. Has Wahlberg gone full sanctimonious twit?

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Not that god exists, but if he did Mark, I dare say he’s got other priorities; seriously, how self-indulgent and aggrandizing can you be? That said, have you ever looked up the people you actually harmed in the 80’s and apologized or asked their forgiveness? I would think they would be your top concern before a fucking movie. Oh right, I forgot, when you belong to Child Rape Inc. ™, it’s all good.

  • Helen Damnation™

Boogie Nights escalated Mark into the A-list of actors, now he’s complaining about it? WTF?

It was an excellent film on so many levels, and I thought he was excellent in it.

I caught one of his appearances on the Graham Norton Show, and when Graham brought up the film, Wahlberg seemed to suggest that he did not regret doing the movie. That he actually liked it and got something out of it.

I wonder what changed in his perspective.

Kirk Cameron convinced him of his sinful ways.

He’s one of those Michael Hoffman types, who play around at the fringes of what he wants, but feels immediately guilty about it as soon as it’s over. All the while, he is struggling mightily not to give in to what he really wants, because the guilt over that would just be too crushing. Never mind the fact that he is sending out obvious signals every time he lets his guard down…

Marky Mark, Boogie Nights is the best job you ever had and the last good performance you ever gave. Sit down, shut up, be grateful.

    Wahlberg, a committed Catholic…….
Why should only catholics be committed? I think all religions should be committed, if you get my drift.

How about asking god for forgiveness for those awful Transformer Movies!

Walhberg is such a joke. Besides being a terrible actor, he is a thug. When I was growing up in Boston, the Boston Globe ran numerous in-depth stories of how he assaulted and permanently injured that innocent Asian man for fun. This, along w/numerous other petty crimes that he seemed to have little remorse for. And then he tried to bully the Governor of MA into pardoning him?

To hear him now, pretending to be holier than thou is such a joke. He got real lucky a long time ago and turned very little talent into something else.

You’d think he would be more concerned about “The Happening.” Practically unforgivable!

Boogie Nights was a movie, acting, that’s his job. How about your behavior on Graham Norton’s lap while on his chat show?

Who is going to forgive him for “Transformers” ? No one. The answer is: no one.
