National Park Service Pulls Sponsorship Of Ceremony Dedicating Rainbow Flag At Stonewall Monument

Andy Humm reports at Gay City News:

What should have been a celebration dedicating the raising of the Rainbow Flag at the Stonewall National Monument in Greenwich Village on October 11 at noon turned into another attack on LGBTQ people by the Trump administration in a week full of such attacks.

The National Park Service’s Barbara Applebaum, who arranged the permit for the event, dropped out as a speaker at the ceremony — her office citing a schedule conflict — and organizers of the event said in a release that the Park Service dropped its sponsorship of the event.

When it saw the pre-publicity on the ceremony, the National Park Service under Secretary Ryan Zinke’s Department of the Interior worked to certify that the flagpole adjacent to Christopher Park was not technically on federal land so that no Rainbow Flag would be flying on US government property.

Ann Northrop, co-host of Gay USA, who will preside over the dedication, said, “This is an unbelievably petty, sleazy, transparent bit of cruelty by the Trump administration. Evidently, we are so filthy to them and their right-wing supporters that they can’t even be associated with a few yards of rainbow fabric.”

The ceremony will go on today. Hit the link for more.

“This is an unbelievably petty, sleazy, transparent bit of cruelty by the Trump administration. Evidently, we are so filthy to them and their right-wing supporters that they can’t even be associated with a few yards of rainbow fabric.”

Subtlety is not their strong suit…

  • Tawreos

These people seem to not realize how fucking childish this type of stuff makes them look.

    • Gustav2

They love how it makes them look. That’s how they keep the base.

      • j.martindale

Petty, vindictive and mean–all part of the racist/homophobic/xenophobic Republican Party. Yeah, I hate them right back. No pretense at Xtian “love.” These creatures lack basic humanity. I detest them.

      • The Sentinel

BINGO. It’s all deliberate. They realize EXACTLY how this makes them look and they love it!

    • David Walker

I agree, but it’s not meant for us. It’s engineered for them, the Unsavory Stupid Assholes. The base gets a good “haw, haw, haw, they really stuck it to them queers THIS time” our of it. We continue to stew. How long before the pressure cooker finally explodes?

  • clay

Just “cleaning up the margins” on those national monuments!

Lower key meetings, not large public celebrations of the Troll in Chief, will diminish the size of the protests.

Maybe they really are working for another government and want to destroy our country.

    • worstcultever

Strike the “maybe,” change to “absolutely”

    • Silver Badger

No, they want to destroy us.

      • Shy Guy

And most of the government too.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Why do they work so hard to cater to their base which is such a sliver of America?

Their base is a brain-dead cult that will worship Trump and his minions, none of this is required.

What is the benefit? The vast majority of American believes in LGBT equality, reasonable gun regulation, affordable healthcare, environmental protections, etc. etc.

    • Dramphooey

Because that base is completely dedicated to them and puts them in to power.

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

But that’s my point. The base is so cultishly devoted, this is unnecessary. What level of evil is required to actively search for the minutia of government to insure maximum insult and outrage, when it serves no real purpose. There is no new base to be won over. There is no base to solidify, it is already concrete.

        • Dramphooey

The beast needs meat thrown at it and this petty stuff is cheap. But there is another factor. I’ve been arguing against “all politicians are the same” for a long time. There is a belief in this country that politicians will just do whatever they think will get them elected and have no core beliefs. Well, I think these politicians do have some strong core beliefs. They hate minorities and they’re going to hurt them with the power they’ve been given by a foolish electorate.

        • CanuckDon

Trump and his loyal servants must be enjoying this place in the high tower with the power to give and take away where they see fit. Life in prison won’t be fitting enough for this type of evil.

        • Nychta

I think it’s more about controlling or destroying anyone who isn’t part of the base, starting with those who are already on the margins – LGBT people; racial, ethnic and religious minorities; immigrants; “nasty” women. They keep us off balance, turning this way and that, under a never ending barrage of infractions and insults.

    • clay

Because they don’t believe in the concept of “allies”. They insult our NATO, NAFTA, and other international allies. They discount our straight allies. Even on Facebook, they count mere acquaintances as friends, because they’ve never allowed themselves to form a deep friendship.

    • Sebastian

that brain dead cult got him elected… and sadly… might again. because they go out and vote unlike most other americans…

      • Dramphooey

Well, some people cannot vote for the Democrat because they are “building for the future.” The future in a concentration camp.

        • Silver Badger

          For us.

      • CanuckDon

Unfortunately, they’re the collective that has been most agitated at this point. They are the ones with closed minds that can easily be riled and manipulated because they can’t reason.

          • stuckinthewoods

Fortunately northern VA is dependable but in the 2016 election the cities were blue generally. Even Martinsville city went about 60% Clinton. But I feel your pain.. and good luck to us all next month. This is a good 2016 interactive map.

          • (((GC)))

It won’t hurt to check your voter registration status (possible online in some states). Years ago I discovered that I had gotten dropped after voting absentee.

At last night’s rehearsal of the LGBTQ+ community choir I sing in, we were reminded to be sure to register to vote by PA’s deadline of midnight (doable online) if we weren’t already, in order to be able to vote next month.

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

But they will do that regardless of all these extra unnecessary attacks

      • Card

The terrible level of disengagement aside, most other Americans also face greater obstacles getting to the polls. One of the greatest failures of our government has been to dedicate Election Day as a national holiday with additional worker protections to allow anyone eligible greater ability to exercise their right to vote.

        • canoebum

Actually, two days would be better, a Sunday and Monday.

          • Card

Maybe a Friday and Saturday–not sure I want them rolling out of their churches/sermons and straight to the polls on a Sunday or Monday morning…

      • stuckinthewoods

That’s the heart of the situation. We live in a very red county situated between two solidly blue cities. Although not a comparatively high population, voter turnout is close to 90% so those disproportionate R votes add up.

The brown shirts would do well to remember what happened to the SA.

    • David Walker

The vast majority of Americans may very well believe and even support what you mention, but the vast majority isn’t in power. Hell, we’re not even offering any resistance. Resist…Persist. Sounds good. We’re very good with words. Unfortunately, THEY are very good at unifying and rallying the troops. And we sit around and bitch and kvetch and get indignant and angry and incredibly pissed off and wonder why nobody’s doing anything and so we go back to sitting around. Anybody care to lead? Didn’t think so.

      • joe ho

lol. Anyone too lazy or too righteous to vote for Hillary is to blame. It’s that simple.

US presidential elections are almost always close. Especially third-term ones. Third party and protest voters on the left are to blame.

        Live with it, you imbecile.

        • Berdawn Hutchinson

what a successful strategy you have for convincing others. keep it up—your disinterest in making the Democratic party relevant is really paying off

lol. fucktards like you who don’t understand how a binary political system works are the problem.

voting for the lesser of two evils really is less evil. until you learn that basic lesson, you shouldn’t be voting.

Showing up at every election and voting blue no matter who can override GOP dirty tricks. No excuses ever for third party and protest votes in our binary presidential system. Presidential elections are almost always close. And third-term elections are almost impossible to win, unless the economy is booming. Self-destructive undisciplined voting behavior on the left must come to an end. Making excuses for it is not the way forward.

        • CJAS

Addressing voter suppression isn’t “making excuses”, it’s a course of action.

  • j.martindale

I suggest that there be a plaque put on the flagpole with the rainbow flag. Since it is on private property, not public land, there should be no limitation on what it says. I think the plaque should describe how homophobia continued through today, such that the Republicans controlling the opening of this monument were so vindictive and anti-gay that they made it impossible to fly the rainbow flag over the memorial to the Gay rights movement and be on public land. How fitting to demonstrate the need for our movement to continue on in the face of hatred and even governmental oppression. Memorialize their hatred!

It could be argued they are one in the same – but donnie is going that extra mile to burn two candles rather than one at both ends. What on earth is wrong with us that (and surveys back this up) we are STILL not voting, still not working within the Democratic Party to defend ourselves?
Enough already with the ‘moral’ victories – we need to start playing the damn game to WIN. That means VOTING for the candidate how will beat the Repulicans. Not voting Green, not staying home because the Democratic candidate isn’t perfect on the one and only issue which really matters to us as individuals.
This is nothing compared to what’s coming down the line. Two states more. One more liberal or moderate Justice replaced and we are done for generations to come.
