Mike Pence Stalks Out Of NFL Game In Pretend Huff After Anthem Protest Everybody Knew Would Happen

CNN reports:

Vice President Mike Pence left a football game between the Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday after some players knelt during the National Anthem, saying he did not want to “dignify” the event.

The pool of journalists accompanying the vice president was not allowed into the stadium and was asked to stay in their vans. They were told by a staffer that “there may be an early departure from the game,” but were not given any further details.

Some criticized Trump and Pence for the walkout, with Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz tweeting, “Wait. This was orchestrated to make a point? That’s not an inexpensive thing to do.”

    I. HATE. THIS. ADMINISTRATION.

And everything it has done to this country.

FUCK THEM ALL. HOPE THEY ALL GO TO HELL.

      It’s not an administration. It’s a regime.

Tthe sadest point of this whole exerciseis is yet to happen. When this is dead and gone and becomes an embarrassing note in History, this regime has so gutted the diplomatic core leaving no career politicians left to take up the slack. Those people who run the government and the country will not be there

        • thatotherjean

Perhaps, if we rid the country of this pestilence quickly enough, some of them might be willing to come back, and bring up another generation of people willing to work for the good of the country.

          • JWC

If not it will take a good 5+ years to reestablish

        It certainly wants to be.

      • kaydenpat

        True. The fascism is strong.

      • Steverino

Indeed it is. A minority political party and extremist ideology (even further a minority) which β€œwins” elections through a variety of tricks: gerrymandering, voter suppression, well-funded propaganda (from powerful oligarchic interests) including demonization of the opposition, power grabs, and fascist-style hyper-nationalism and authoritarianism, certainly fits the definition of a regime in the modern era. Although sadly, many in the majority opposition who can vote, won’t.

      • Librarykid

        More like a racket.

      • J Ascher

I’d go so far as to say it’s a junta based on how it came to power.

      • JCF

        It’s not a regime. It’s a clusterfuck.

      • It’s not a regime. Regimes have better organisation.

        It’s a shit show.

    • 2patricius2

Just think. Out of the last 5 elections for president and vice president, Democrats won four of them by popular vote. The Electoral College has proven in recent years to be an utter disaster.

      • Lizard

The EC should have been overturned the minute every citizen over 18 was allowed to vote regardless of skin color and gender. That we still have it is a testament to the laziness of the system.

        • 2patricius2

That would have been a really good thing. Two amendments in one.

        • John30013

Unfortunately, it’s doubtful that the EC will ever be canned. A Constitutional Amendment requires 3/4ths vote of the States. Since smaller states benefit disproportionately from the EC, they will never vote to remove it.

          • Lizard

No, they won’t, no matter how racist and biased it is.

Those smaller states also tend to be conservative, and the EC keeps handing them presidential wins they don’t deserve.

          • gary47290

You mean small conservative states like Vermont, Rhode Island, Delaware, DC, Hawaii?

The GOP won in 2016 because young people and people of color were not inspired by Hillary, right or wrong. if Hillary had picked one of the Texas Castro twins (even though their single, immigrant mother raised them Anglophone), its quite believable that she could have flipped Texas and Arizona last year. The GOP won Texas by just 9% and Arizona by 4.5%. THESE two states would have changed the outcome on Nov 8. EVERYone looks at the tiny percent loss in Wisconsin, Michigan and Penna but ignores the impact that better turnout by US Citizen Hispanics compared to the uncrackable nut of scared, white blue collar workers in the upper midwest.

          • Well there could be a chance if it were ever to screw over the Republicans.

          • John30013

Perhaps if the 45* administration fucks up so completely that the GOP brand is utterly destroyed in the process., but I don’t believe that the former will cause the latter. Trump is a convenient focal point and mirror of their ideology, but the Alt-Right/Nazi contingent can make enough common cause with the Teabangelicals that they’ll find another torch bearer if (hopefully when) 45* implodes.

          • Librarykid

YES! YES! YES! You must have read my mind! You know my dream. It’s your first sentence. From your mind to God’s ear.

          • J Ascher

When you have a party as authoritarian as the Republicans are, I’m afraid nothing short of revolution will change their minds.

          • Yes, the smaller states, but mostly those states that don’t always go red or blue. A lot of federal money pours into Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania and similar states because both parties want to blow them at least once every four years. So, no we won’t get 38 states to agree to can the EC, at least until a Democrat loses the popular vote but becomes president anyway (although Republicans would burn down the whole fucking country before they’d let a Democrat take office under such a scenario).

        • Steverino

Indeed. Both it, and the wording of the Second Amendment, are relics of the founding of this nation as a slave-holding state.

        • lymis

When I was a teen, I naively believed that the moment we had an election where the EC overrode the popular vote, everyone would come together to agree to get rid of it, on principle (naively thinking that principle factored heavily in politics.)

I eventually came to realize that any time such a thing came to pass, just under 50% of the population would realize that their candidate and party won because of the EC, and certainly weren’t going to get rid of it, because that would mean the other candidate would have won. Can’t be having that.

    • JT

Fuck ’em. Fuck every last one of ’em.

My problem with guillotines is that they were actually designed to be instruments of mercy so the condemned didn’t suffer during an execution.

Personally, for this administration, I’m all for going back to the good old days when you had an executioner with a rusty blunt axe who had to be bribed to cut your head off in just two blows.

        • JackFknTwist

The old blunt axe and block as in the execution of Cromwell and the Countess of Sailsbury.

        Impeach.

        • MonochromeMouse

Impeachment isn’t enough, trump MUST be impeached and him and all the other adults in his immediate family need to be imprisoned for the rest of their lives. I’d say throw Barron in jail too but no jury would convict a child as an accessory to his family’s crimes.

          • JAKvirginia

OH! More than agree. But JMG has comment rules so I contained myself.

          • Librarykid

Pence, too. The people who have screwed over this nation must be separated from their ill-gotten gains for the rest of their lives, preferably in an unheated cell in solitary confinement.

          • MonochromeMouse

The next democrat to get office should declare the entire trump administration enemies of the state and ship them off to Guantanamo Bay.

    • kaydenpat

        Or maybe just throw up.

    • Scott MB

The worst thing is that Pence, a politician, has zero clue about the first amendment. One would expect it from baby tRump, he is clueless.

      • lymis

I still want to know what happened during that “unscheduled” visit to the Indiana governor’s mansion that resulted in Pence suddenly being the Golden Boy out of nowhere.

Especially given everything else we’ve found out about foreign and domestic “investors” buying the presidency.

Treating soldiers like pawns to be sacrificed for his ego (remember Yemen? DIdn’t think so)
Disrespecting the Constitution by alllowing LBGTs to be treated like second class citizens?
Disrespecting the country by colluding with Russia, by giving jobs to loyal people who are completely unqualified, by trying to run the country as a 1 party dictatorship?

Oh my God, I can’t wait until the next election when we nominate another person of color as the Democratic nominee and we whuuup their butts in the election. It’s the only way to defeat these white supremacists, by electing more leaders of color.

    • FAEN

How about we nominate the best person regardless of skin color.

      • downtownla

That’s just something white people say.

        • FAEN

          You know all white people?

          • downtownla

No, but I know plenty of people of color and I have never heard a single one say that phrase.

          • FAEN

I’m not sure what ridiculous point you’re trying to make but let’s be clear-whoever the best person is to take back the WH regardless of color, gender, orientation etc I will support.

          • downtownla

My point is, as a person of color, I am tired of being a punching bag for this administration. He has declared war on us and I think the greatest rebuke against these white supremacists is to nominate a person of color to lead our country. The key attribute of being a strong candidate is someone who can turn out the vote and in this regards, having a person of color on the ticket will help drive Democratic turnout. Putting forth an all-white, straight, cis-gender, ticket like they did this past time is not going to excite big portions of the Democratic base.

          • Lizard

“Putting forth an all-white, straight, cis-gender, ticket like they did this past time is not going to excite big portions of the Democratic base.”

…I think that might depend on the candidate. You can’t ignore the three-decade long smear campaign against Hillary Clinton. I’m not saying she was a perfect candidate, but she lost for more reasons than her skin color or her gender.

What the Dems need is a young, charismatic, exciting leader with the skills to lead a country, the personality to match, and the experience to make an agenda happen. Obama had all of those things in addition to the color of his skin.

          • downtownla

The fact is, when there is an all-white ticket, many voters of color don’t feel included and it depresses enthusiasm. I think if Hillary had nominated a person of color as her VP, she could have found the additional votes in MI, PA and WI. I can’t prove that except from hearing enough anecdotes from friends in those states and why they sat this one out.

Yes, we need someone who fits all the traits you outlined. I would also say someone who has a bold vision for the country and a clear direction. However, I think you are underestimating the impact of Obama’s race on his historic victory and how he was able to break all voting records. His race mattered, especially for people of color.

          • Lizard

So you’re contending they sat out a crucial election because no one on the ticket shared their skin color? Even if they supported them and their rights?

Look, I get where you’re coming from, but I think you’re really selling voters of color short. You’re making it sound like all they care about is the color of their skin. Would you support white people who refused to vote in the 2008 or 2012 elections for the same reason? (Yes, I know Biden was white.) They’d (rightly) be called petty racists for not feeling “included.”

I can’t begin to imagine the frustration of being a person of color in America right now. I get that I’m speaking from a position of relative privilege. I understand that the majority of the leadership is white and that voters of color are routinely barred from voting with voter ID laws and are severely unrepresented in pretty much every aspect of public policy. But choosing to sit out the 2016 election because there were two (extremely qualified) white people on the ticket was childish for the same reason that men refusing to vote for Hillary Clinton because she’s a woman were childish.

          • downtownla

It’s not that they didn’t share their same skin color; it’s that they didn’t think they understood their needs. It’s like white rappers. Eminem is okay. Vanilla Ice, not so much. The bar is just set higher and in this case, Hillary and Tim Kaine, did not prove to communities of color in sufficient numbers that their election would make a difference in their lives. As my mom put it, and she is usually a reliable Democratic voter in MI, she had a choice between someone she hated (Trump) and someone she disliked (Hillary). She chose not to vote for either. Bash her all you want, but she is a voter and she gets to decide how she wants to vote or not. It’s up to the parties and candidates to make the case to the voters. If they fail, then it’s their own fault. I don’t blame the voters. I blame the candidates.

          • FAEN

Annnndd as LGBT people many of whom are of color, immigrants-you think we’re not tired of being used as a punching bag by this administration? They have declared war on us as well just FYI.

          • Lizard

Don’t forget women…Republicans treat us as subhuman, too.

          • FAEN

            Absolutely.

          • thatotherjean

How about we split the difference? I’d love to see Sen. Al Franken (if he can be convinced to run) as the Dem’s presidential candidate, with Kamala Harris as VP. Smart, liberal, and Kamala Harris would make a great President after Al Franken’s single term, since he’s probably too old to run twice.

          • downtownla

Possibly. Can’t say I know enough about either of their policies to back them at this point. It was nice that Kamala came out for single payer, but I have heard mixed things about her amongst my politico friends in CA, so I am reserving judgement. Al Franken is smart and witty, but I’d like to also know more about where he stands. I don’t think he signed on to the single payer bill, did he?

          • thatotherjean
          • downtownla

I’m glad that he sees the long-term solution is single payer. I just worry that sometimes when we spend too much time worrying about the temporary fixes, we lose site of the ultimate objective. Still, I am open to Franken. I want to be more open to Sherrod Brown, too, but have been less enamored with him lately. If we are talking white guys in the Senate here, Jeff Merkley is the one, on paper, who intrigues me the most. Will try to catch him giving a speech to see if he has gravitas and charisma to be a great communicator. I know that sounds superficial, but frankly, a big part of the President’s job is to sell things.

          • FAEN

You assume I don’t know people of color?

      • Lizard

I’m also terrified of his reelection potential.

        • another_steve

Yes. Think, for a moment, of the dynamics here.

Trump resigns or is removed from office. Every Republican with an ounce of brain and common sense sighs a sigh of relief. Their party’s long nightmare is over.

They rally around Pence like no other Republican politician – President or otherwise – has ever been rallied around before. He’s their god. Their messiah. He’s come to lead his wary party out of the desert and to the promised land.

The thought of Trump leaving office, for whatever reason, scares the shit out of me.

          • lymis

And, like Ford, Pence’s first act will be to pardon Trump and everyone associated with him for every federal crime they’ve ever committed.

Let’s face it, the whole concept of the NFL is racist to its core. You’ve got white owners showing off their prized possessions to the world – and expect them to dance to the white man’s tune or risk banishment.

    • Lizard

Well…by that definition, this isn’t confined to the NFL. Most major sports have team owners. I just googled “baseball team owners” and it gave me a fairly extensive roster of white men.

      • SoCalGal20

Professional sports in general is a pretty shady business. You’ve got team owners where it’s a lot like the old Hollywood contract system. You do something they don’t like and you can be blackballed and nobody will hire you.

Also, it is absolutely ridiculous to me that the NFL is a NON-PROFIT. (Not sure about the other professional sorts). In addition they hold cities hostage by threatening to leave if they don’t give them huge tax breaks and build them a big expensive stadium and so forth.

NCAA is even worse, imo, though.

      • kareemachan

Wasn’t one of the ex-owners a racist bitch of a woman? Ah yes:

People are still need help and are dying in PR with the mayor of San Juan begging for water just this morning and this is what the FEMA administrator has to say about her.

    https://twitter.com/thisweekabc/status/917060924430721024

Meanwhile Pence just wasted however many taxpayer dollars on an idiotic publicity stunt before zipping off to California for a fundraising shindig in Newport Beach with Kevin McCarthy on Monday. And Trump is golfing.

    • Lizard

That’s so unprofessional. She was perfectly fair in her criticisms of the FEMA relief efforts. For example, they told people in PR to declare that their area needed relief…online. Where only 5% of the island has power.

On the bright side, Twitter appears to be eviscerating him.

      • thatotherjean

I had brief hopes that Trump’s FEMA administrator would be one of his better choices. Nope, same-old, same-old flaming incompetent.

      • SoCalGal20

And she’s not wrong! People need water.

Also, FEMA is saying they’ve gone to all these towns and whatever and they have but without relief supplies and completely unprepared to help people. There was a story on the news earlier in the week where the news crew drove to this town and the people asked if they were FEMA. FEMA had stopped by with no supplies like a week or so earlier and helped them fill out paperwork or something and that was it.

        • JAKvirginia

WTF with paperwork? Like this administration will release any of that data to us? NO PAPER TRAILS!

This suggests that Pence willfully relinquished his personal freedom-of-choice instead of personally “taking a stand”. Creepy.

    • Scout

Someone else on twitter suggested that Trump was stealing Pence’s thunder /spotlight with his statement and trying to take credit for it. Although would Pence do all this without telling Trump first? The tally for the cost of this stunt is in the hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars because of course he is flying a govt. plane.

      • Benny S.

        Indeed, quite costly.

Another perspective: Pence was supposedly at the game to support the Colts and Peyton Manning, but it was the 49ers who knelt. So Pence allowed the 49ers to “win” while he lacked the courage and staying power to follow through on his support of the Colts.

      • kareemachan

Neither Trump nor Pence ever served in the U.S. military. Trump even went out of his way to avoid it. Pence would have avoided it too if he had been in any danger of being drafted. Instead, they are typical GOP chicken hawks who are pretending to be patriotic.

  • lk

Mike Pence takes offense at the notion of athletes drawing attention to the unjustified deaths of black citizens.

  • sacrob

If all of us kneel, will all of the stupid white men leave the country — for good?

  • I am going to play devil’s advocate. If the Democratic Party wants to keep the number of Senators it has right now after November 2018 it is going to have to hold seats in red blooded states like Montana, North Dakota, Indiana, West Virginia, Florida, and Missouri. If it is going to pull a huge upset and actually take control of the Senate (which is possible) it is going to have to convince enough non-fanatic centrist voters in places like Alabama, Arizona, Texas and Nevada — all states that Larry Sabato says are winnable — to jump ship and not vote for the Republican candidate. The way to do this is not to back histrionics like kneeling for the national anthem, especially in areas with high veteran populations. I think Mike Pence knows exactly what he is doing. Progressives and associated media friends are barking up the wrong tree by making kneeling for the national anthem a big issue, especially when the destruction of healthcare rights is at play. 9 million poor children lost their health care this week — (apparently) — this should get the headlines! I give Donald Trump and Steve Bannon credit for pulling national attention away from the issues that should be getting it right now.

  • andrew

IMO, the protests at the National Anthem, while well intentioned, are counter productive. They actually help the Republicans by driving some ordinary working class Americans, whose natural home should be the Democratic Party, into the hands of the right wing extremists and they accomplish almost nothing else. Right wing Republicans running for office must view these protests as a gift. The purists on the left have often given such electoral gifts to the right.

  • Gee, I don’t know. Pence seems to be dividing his allegiance between God and America a lot. I think he should burn in hell for that. And what is that thing his wife has on her head? Is that a wig? Isn’t that forbidden in Leviticus? Of course it could be her own hair, but she’d have to have died it. That’s a Leviticus no no too. Yeah, she should burn too. Faithless swine!

  • j.martindale

I hear it cost 200,000 for him to fly in and fly out for this stunt. How much do YOU have in your retirement account?

    • Oscarlating Wildely

      Flat out lie.

I heard it was at least 250K.

  • Jerry Kott

It is amazing how the Nation Anthem and every act of taking a stand has been weaponized. Phantoms are everywhere.

  • lymis

” I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.”

And yet, you both attended the Trump Inauguration.

Here’s a clue, Mikey, you’re supposed to be respecting the CONSTITUTION. Including the part with the whole pesky Freedom of Speech thingie.

  • What they are really saying is, “disrespecting the superiority and authority of us whites”, because that is the actual purpose of the protests. To show disagreement that white cops can gun down black men without fear of legal reprisal.

  • Sean

What exactly unites us (& by us I mean ALL Americans), Mike Peckerwood?

You think your statements, actions, policies & agenda that serve white, heterosexual, rich, cisgender male, ChrISIStians ONLY unites ALL Americans? https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1bb47d9b3979c92a0842fc29a3edbbd80172afd2e5ae7f20f2d54e360dfb32a5.gif

  • KnownDonorDad

    Drama queen.

  • leastyebejudged

The thousands of dollars of taxpayer money pissed away so that he can jet set around the country behaving like a jackass should be paid back.

Oh, but this flys well with his supporters who become even more entrenched every day in this facade.

  • ‘Til Tuesday

Basically, Trump, Pence, and the whites supporting them are saying that black people have to ask their permission to protest, and they will tell them when and where it’s allowed. Fucking racists.

  • TexasBoy

Is anyone else surprised Trump and Pence haven’t yet used the word uppity?

    • grada3784

      Give them time.

    • M Jackson

      β€˜Know their place’?

  • Sean

“While everyone is entitled to their opinion”…. I’m going to stop you right there because the next half of your statement counts as a “but” & therefore makes the entire sentence an oxyMORON. These athletes have the 1st amendment right to protest racial injustice in any non-violent way whenever, wherever, & however they want. That is not an opinion, it is a FACT of American law & you, Mike Peckerwood, swore a legally binding oath to respect & protect that. Don’t like it? Quit, you son of a bitch.

Kneeling by definition is a sign of respect. When these athletes take a Knee to protest racial injustice they are respecting the black Americans who were banned from serving in combat under that flag & by this country. They are respecting the black Americans who were denied the right to vote under that flag & by this country. They are respecting the black women who were forced to suffer being raped by their white masters who where protected under that flag & by this country. They are respecting the black Americans who were forced to sit in the back of the bus, drink from separate water fountains, attend separate inferior schools, or seek treatment in separate hospitals under that flag & by this country. They are respecting the black people wanting equality & freedom hanged at the neck by those waving that fucking flag & were protected by this country. They are respecting black woman who married a white man even though the law under flag & this country said she could not marry the man she loves because she is not white.

When these athletes take a knee, a universal sign of respect by definition, for National Anthem they are respecting the flag & this country. They are respecting black Americans who demanded the right to serve equally & the part of this country that supported them. They are respecting the black (& gay) men like Rodney Powell & Bayard Rustin who refused to tolerate or accept discrimination & the white part of this country that had no problem sharing a water fountain with a black American. They are respecting the part of America that made it legal for interracial couples to marry & have that marriage recognized in the eyes of the law.

Your problem, Mike Peckerwood & TrumplestiltsKKKin, has never been what these athletes were doing, but why they were doing it. YOU do NOT get to decide how Americans respect that flag or this country. America is NOT a dictatorship. Get over it & spend the peoples time on doing something that provides something of value to this country like helping Americans suffering from natural disasters instead of going to a fucking football game to stage am un-American white nationalist stunt that undermines the freedom of speech on the tax payers dime.

    • M Jackson

The Vice President and the rest of the trump toadies just Lie and say the players are insulting veterans and the flag. Thar’s more than enough red meat for these despicable morans.

  • robert

    • Oscarlating Wildely

This is one of those times when the C word in in Anglo meaning would be a perfect application.

      • grada3784

I’m waiting for Trump to grab Pence by the cuneus.

      • M Jackson

Leave the women out of it and just call him a dick.

  • SDG

You, and the rest of the members of the “Junta” should start staying in your bunkers, and keep away from the public.

  • Mikey Ruck

let’s look at this for a moment. Pence flew on Air Force 2 from Las Vegas to Indianapolis. the whole “walk out” thing had already been planned by daddy Trump.

then Pence gets back on Air Force 2, and flies to California for four fundraisers over the next few days. how much was this silly trip today for taxpayers? a million bucks?

  • TexasBoy

As difficult as it is for me to believe, I’ve been forced to come to the conclusion that Trump supporters really ARE as stupid as they act in public. It is amazing they have the mental capacity to feed themselves, dress themselves, and breathe all at the same time.

  • Oscarlating Wildely

The VP of the United States spent a quarter of a million dollars for a staged protest against Americans exercising their American rights while meanwhile millions of Americans are sitting without electricity and water, and they are ingrates for asking for help, and not liking a roll of towels that was thrown to them– by the President of the United States who has done little from stopping their deaths.

    Our country is fucked.

Edit to note: I take solace in one thing: he is now at 32%. Soon, he will be past the point of return should this trajectory continue, and it will. And no-one will want to back someone they know will lose. Sure, the mouthbreathers will, but the enthusiasm gap will hurt him– and kill his ego.

    • M Jackson

The number changes but my comment is always the same β€” 32 seems too high.

  • grada3784

Did Mike Pence really walk out in a huff? Or was it more like a minute and a huff?

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Depends on the definition of huff, you see. If you mean a huff like when people told him his Indiana bigot bill was bullshit, well, that huff was standing in place even though he really wanted to leave. Huff like post Hamilton huff? Depends if you mean before or after he got to the lobby. Huff like “I have to act all pissy for Daddy and the cameras even though I know that this was going down and my boss/owner once swayed and hummed to that same song but hey! what’s facts got to do with it?” That definition of huff?

You see, Pence is *such* a complex hypocrite, he is, but it depends on what your definition of is, is.

      • grada3784

Wow!! Actually, I was just doing a re-play of a line by Groucho Marx.

  • M Jackson

I hate football and ignore the NFL, NBA, and all the rest of professional sports, but now every time trump or Pence tweets out bullshit against these players I consider them heroes more.

Though of course real heroes are working off the trumpized news cycle to bring aid to Puerto Rico, provide civic protections for transgender victims of the religious right government, and find a way to keep children from dying without health care.

  • Robert Flanagan

You think would have more important things to do other then staging things like this. A divided population does not pay attention to the fact he is unable to do his job. Donnyboy, this is not a reality game show!

  • Kevin Andrews

There are no clearer acts of absolute treason & fraud against the American People. These bastards know that the Israeli trained Gestapo murdering persons of color is the foundation of these demonstrations of Free Speech by American Football players.
The Shitgibbon and his ambulatory feces, Pence, are nothing more than a floor-show distraction from the real murder of American Citizens by the illegal and unconstitutional standing army on our Main Streets.

  • Lumpy Gaga

First, they told me about the party, and I was all, “I’m not even GOING!”

The inbred ferret leave a Colts game in a huff. So did we when they left Baltimore. Good riddance to bad rubbish x 2.
