AUSTRALIA: Tony Abbott Backs Call To Ban Macklemore From Singing Hit Pro-Gay Song At National Rugby Final

The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

Former prime minister Tony Abbott has backed a call from same-sex marriage opponents to ban American rapper Macklemore from performing his pro-gay song Same Love at the NRL grand final.

Former player Tony Wall, who played first grade briefly in the mid 1990s, is petitioning NRL boss Todd Greenberg to halt the half-time performance and “take a neutral position on the question of same-sex marriage”.

The Coalition for Marriage, the official “no” campaign vehicle, seized on the petition on Wednesday, demanding the NRL ban the song despite making “freedom of speech” one of its central campaign tenets.

Spokesman David Goodwin said the grand final was “not a PC lecture theatre” and it was “bizarre that the NRL would choose to use its half-time entertainment to push a message which it knows millions of Australians disagree with”.

Released in 2012, Same Love has been certified as double-platinum in the US and the track’s video has over 177 million views on YouTube.

The anti-marriage folks are the ones who wanted the public referendum with no limits on speech, rather than the normal, respectful political process in parliament. If they get to use their lies, we get to use our art.

    • Frostbite

It’s funny, you’d almost think the anti-marriage folk simply can’t compete on any level playing field.

      • BudClark

Neither can the KKKonservative KKKristianist KKKultists of the Religious Reich (sic) … challenge THEM with ONE piece of REAL biblical scholarship an/or one piece of LOGIC, and you’ll see how fast a “snowflake” can REALLY melt! (chuckle)

  • liondon#iamnotatraitor

Free speech for me but not for thee.

  • zhera

It’s OK To Say NO To Hate.

It’s OK To Say NO To Tony Abbott.

It’s OK To Say NO To Bigots Everywhere.

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

So, if he wants neutrality, Tony Abbott must be in favor of changing the name of Margaret Court Arena, right?

    • Shy Guy

Neutrality in the Fox News “fair and balanced” way, I’d expect. 😛

  • Treant

Abbott: “Our negative message should be the only one heard and we need to ruthlessly suppress any positive signs or symbols.”

I don’t think so, Tony. Now sit down and shut up.

  • Tawreos

If your “deeply held” beliefs can be threatened by a guy singing a song then you are one shallow motherfucker

  • j.martindale

It’s okay to say our marriages are every bit as important as yours. It is also okay to say mind your own business, bigots.

  • zhera

They wanted a huge public debate on this so that as many bigots as possible could express their hate. And now they say “Footy fans shouldn’t be subjected to a politicised grand final.”

    • Ninja0980

Yup, they whine about the yes side text messaging people to vote yes or stuff like this without acknowledging the fact our side didn’t want this.

  • Bluto
  • bkmn

They would be cheering if an anti-gay group was set to perform

    • clay

I doubt the fans would be.

  • Harveyrabbit

Not only that but also ban “We Will Rock You” by Queen during the game. And any song by The Village People anywhere, anytime on the continent of Australia. And close all YMCA’s there just because.

  • Rex

Australia, you’re giving the USA a good run for most bigoted country, 2017.

  • Rebecca Gardner
  • Ninja0980

    “It’s OK to Vote no.”
    Yes it is.
Just be honest you’re doing it because of bigotry and nothing more.

  • Lizard

“Sport is sport.” If it’s anything like America, they’re fine with it when it’s their politics being jammed into everyone else’s faces. Hypocrites.

  • Texndoc

They’ll cry from the mountain top for him not to perform, hoping he performs. It’s the anticipation of a backlash vote. It’s not the act, it’s the set up.

  • bambinoitaliano

He is certainly taking the cue from the shit gibbon. The same recipe whipped up by Putin.

  • Gigi

A real honour to be with 100 indoctrinated young Aussies determined to let everyone understand it’s ok to be a homophobic bigot. #FixedIt

  • Ninja0980

Anyone else have this really bad feeling this will end up like Prop 8?

    • Treant

    • clay

Yeah, but there’s also Washington, Maryland, and Maine.

      • scream4ever

        And Minnesota.

        • clay

Yes, and Minnesota (I forgot to check states where voters rejected constitutional amendments).

    • Gigi

It seems to me that the “Yes!” side waited too long to get their message out, leaving to door wide open for the haters to spread their campaign of lies and misinformation.

    • scream4ever

No polls have shown our side behind, not even close. Also, if we do lose, it’s likely that Labor will take over in the next election, and they have vowed to legalize it in the first 100 days, regardless of the outcome of the postal vote.

      • WNY

        when is their next election?

        • scream4ever

2019, but it may happen sooner since several politicians have been found to be holding office ineligibly, so the governing coalition is threatened.

    • BudClark

Except that, unlike Prop H8, the outcome is “non-binding” (so why have it in the FIRST place, at a cost of millions of $$$ that could have been better spent elsewhere?).

      • BudClark

Thank whatever gods may be that we DON’T have plebiscites in the U.S. I TREMBLE to contemplate ANY U.S. plebiscite involving ANYTHING to do with human RIGHTS) at this particular point in our history.

That’s why they’re called “rights.” SUPPOSEDLY one should not vote on what’s already (implicitly or explicitly) guaranteed in the Constitution.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

“Don’t fucking start on that shit! …. 122 fucking million! And these dickheads have no idea what they’re talking about.”

  • Adam Stevens

But sky-writing ‘VOTE NO’ in planes, is A-OK?

Are bigots really as stupid as they appear to fully formed humans?

    • Silver Badger

The problem is that they expect us to be so stupid.

  • Head-butt the fucker again.

    • Paula

Officer, Abbott assaulted my right fist several times with his face.

  • worstcultever

It always just blows my mind, how much sheer energy that idiots have for endless, pointlessly divisive nonsense

I always thought AU was cooler than this

But oh well, obviously it’s a human plague that can flourish anywhere and everywhere

  • Rex

Hey, Australia, the USA made Marriage Equality the law of the land, and nothing bad has happened, the Devil didn’t take over the county. Oh, wait….

    • worstcultever

This is what fucking kills me. Lots of countries everywhere with SSM (it’s been like what, 20 years in Canada) and ZERO proven bad effect of any kind. Yet they STILL shriek this horseshit propaganda, and ACTUALLY GET AWAY WITH IT.

      • Gigi

People are stupid. They believe the fear mongering and the les. They’re A-OK denying equal rights to others as long as their special protections remain in tact.

    • Gigi

It became law of the land in Canada more than 12 years ago and Canada is doing fine. It’s routinely voted one of the best countries in which to live.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

But wait! Didn’t you know? The children will suffer! They don’t know it yet but they will. /s

The music will play no matter what you say.

  • if you ever thought the arts don’t make an impact, this is your proof that they do.

    • TexasBoy

Why do you think Republicans at the local levels are destroying music, drama and art programs in public schools, citing budget cuts, but spending huge amounts on football programs?

      • worstcultever

Arts can never/will never be stopped, whatever the assholes do institutionally. And who knew the fascist sports mania might end up actually saving us? #thanksyetagainblackpeople

  • Ninja0980

One of the people who replied to the one tweet says he has a gay brother whom he “loves” yet will be voting no.
How do these people vote to make their siblings, sons/daughters etc second class citizens yet say with a straight face they love them?

    • pj

      they dont

    • Gigi

Abbott’s sister is gay. And his daughter is an ally. Imagine Christmas dinner at that house.

      • Reality.Bites

Imagine it because it’s not gonna happen in real life

    • worstcultever

pointless brainy washy, that’s how. worst thing about us humans. no solution

    • Stev84

They don’t have the same definition of “love” as you. Christian Love is indistinguishable from hatred

    • Rex

May I introduce you to my family?

    • BudClark

      Because Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-bus, of course!

  • pj

australian football players. hottest men in sports.

  • blackstar

love to hear everyone sing it out loud during half time .

  • Stev84

He really deserved to get punched in the face

  • Natty Enquirer

You know times have changed when the macho shitheads have to plead not to hear a homo-positive song at their beloved sportsball final.

  • Nic Peterson

Is he afraid that a little ditty that includes a positive message about gay marriage is going to turn all of those menz ghey?

  • jmax

So a former Prime Minister and a former rugby player are telling current players and the league what to do? Why don’t you couple of has-beens just ride off into the sunset and try to fade away gracefully instead of being dicks?

    • kareemachan

Cuz they can’t stop thinking about dicks.

      • jmax

And all those sweaty mens grabbing each other and rubbing bodies together in the scrums and showering in the locker room after the game…
        What were we talking about?

        • Reality.Bites

I’m on the streetcar using my phone or I’d post a photo of Margaret Court and say “tennis”

          • jmax

Thank you for NOT posting any pictures of that dried-apple-faced hag.

          • Silver Badger

            Please don’t.

        • I don’t know, but please continue with the shower locker scene.

    • Hue-Man

Imagine the uproar if Barack Obama tried to tell the NFL what songs could be played at the Super Bowl!

  • Jamie Wilson

The Streisand Effect. From the Sydney Morning Herald:

“Calls from politicians, including a former PM, and others to ban US hip hop artist Macklemore from singing his hit Same Love at the NRL grand final have seemingly backfired, with the song shooting to the top of the Australian iTunes charts.”

  • gaycuckhubby

    What the actual fuck, Australia?

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

    You don’t own sports, bigots.

  • Tom

And NO Tony Abbott it’s NOT OK to vote no.

  • Gustav2

…because the ‘arts’ are never to have a message.

    • Yep! They want their movies plotless, their beer cold and the women hot. Any wandering from that and it’s liberal bias-land.

  • aagold76 .

when is this damn vote? I’m getting tired of hearing about it.

    • jmax

The postal vote ends on November 7th.

      • aagold76 .

        Thank you!

    • Hue-Man

“The results of the survey will be announced on 15 November.” The Guardian

      • aagold76 .

  • Bad Tom

Politicians telling sports people not to talk about politics while “on the job.”
When are politicians ever “not on the job?”

  • Bad Tom

“Freedom to say no” to other people’s rights?
    What the actual fuck?

  • 2guysnamedjoe

A sweet Aussie marriage equality video from 2011. It’s sad that it was made six years ago and the fight is still going on.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Cute couple. Great ad. Amazing message.

And there is no way in hell that this fight should still be going on. Get over it, Oz.

  • Ben in Oakland

If millions of Australians disagree with same sex marriage, Then you should have no problem with the NRL support of it.

Oh, you mean that some millions of Australians disagree with it, but not enough to agree with you and carry the day for you.

  • -M-

So the anti-marriage side is free to lie and slander, divide and incite but no pro-civil rights singing should be allowed. I really hate those people.

  • BudClark

Doesn’t Australia have some form or other of a free speech law? I’m not being sarcastic, BTW … I honestly don’t know. England doesn’t have a “constitution” per se, yet they have more strict laws about hate speech than we do.

  • billbear1961

Young people, enthusiastic and cheerful about denying others their RIGHT to equality.

    They’re vicious little sadists.

  • JWC

Oz get over yourself and pass the damned thing

  • I can’t stand that song, but if it can draw support for equal marriage, then yeah baby yeah!

  • JAKvirginia

Wow. Terrified of a song. Must be a good one.

This is a gift to Macklmore.

  • The New Paige Turner™

You should try living here at the moment with all this BS going on. The “respectful debate” is basically the “no” campaign obfuscating the issue with the usual crap about religious freedom and children not knowing which parent to call Father and the “Yes” campaign saying the opposite.

The religious nutters are all coming out of the woodwork and smile fucking the debate on TV and making up stories about Bakers and Photographers being thrown in jail.

    Sound familiar?

Oh – And its not a plebiscite.

Its a postal survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Its non binding and not compulsory.

A plebiscite would have been conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) a federal body which oversees all elections in the country due to our compulsory election laws and structure. It would also have been compulsory (but not binding)

The AEC also oversees elections for our neighbours in other countries as well.

Even if this postal survey comes back “Yes” (so far 72% of people who have sent their survey back have voted “Yes”) the law still needs to be drafted and has to go through parliament in Canberra which is in the middle of a constitutional crisis around senators citizenship.

    Im over it all ready
