Half Of Republicans Back Postponing 2020 Election Until Trump Solves Nation’s Imaginary Voter Fraud Problem

The Washington Post reports:

Critics of President Trump have repeatedly warned of his potential to undermine American democracy. Among the concerns are his repeated assertions that he would have won the popular vote had 3 to 5 million “illegals” not voted in the 2016 election, a claim echoed by the head of a White House advisory committee on voter fraud.

Claims of large-scale voter fraud are not true, but that has not stopped a substantial number of Republicans from believing them. But how far would Republicans be willing to follow the president to stop what they perceive as rampant fraud? Our recent survey suggests that the answer is quite far: About half of Republicans say they would support postponing the 2020 presidential election until the country can fix this problem.

Nearly half of Republicans (47 percent) believe that Trump won the popular vote. Larger fractions believe that millions of illegal immigrants voted (68 percent) and that voter fraud happens somewhat or very often (73 percent).  Moreover, 52 percent said that they would support postponing the 2020 election, and 56 percent said they would do so if both Trump and Republicans in Congress were behind this.

Conservatives always have been authoritarians. Look at all the right-wing dictatorships that have existed around the world. There were always citizens who backed people like Pinochet, the Shah, Marcos, etc. It would be the same here. They scream they’re patriots but they don’t give a shit about America or democracy as a concept. I don’t consider them my fellow countrymen. I don’t want to hear any more articles about feeling sorry for people who are so hateful that they’d eat out of a dumpster as long as they can help stuff boxcars full of non-tribe members.

    • Clive Johnson

You must be reading my mind. Thank you for that comment.

    • Joseph Miceli

Almost exactly what I told my family. “Every election you vote Republican you decide that you hate the black folks more than you love me.”
      We aren’t really speaking now.

      • paganguy

I get told that they don’t hate blacks or gays or anyone. It’s just they don’t want to support those “others” who are living the high life on welfare and food stamps (or want to come here to mooch off all that free money and stuff) while they struggle. And the reason they “know” it is because Fox News told them so. And there is no convincing them otherwise.

        • Librarykid

Since money is so important to them, I sincerely hope that you come into some serious money just for the express purpose of not sharing any of it with them.

        • Karl Dubhe

I very much doubt any of them has the slightest idea how much someone on welfare gets.

Have you ever asked them? It could be amusing.

          • paganguy

Yes, and they sputter and dissemble and resort to “it’s more than I get”.

          • Karl Dubhe

Make sure you know what you’d get as a single person, a person with 1 or 2 kids. 🙂 Then tell your interlocutor the rates and ask them to make a budget. The results are usually hilarious.

    • Librarykid

Fast answer from Google to how long most democracies last:

How long does the average democracy last?
      From
that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising
the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a
democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a
dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has
      been 200 years.

      • Karl Dubhe

Very small sample size, and let us be honest; I think the majority of the people in your nation are becoming more aware of the danger.

You have advantages the Romans didn’t have. The Athenians were a democracy for free men only, so they’re ‘special’. 🙂

We have a national-scale Jonestown on our hands, thanks to Murdoch and the rest of the puke hate brainwash industrial complex. And it only gets worse and worse (e.g. Sinclair). I’m always telling my wife that this country is simply over, it’s been systematically destroyed by the republican party. I seriously doubt that we’ll ever recover from such a massive, deliberately created insanity machine that still seems more energetic than ever.

Enjoy what there still is to enjoy, is about all I can say.

    • canoebum

In the sci-fi novel “Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand” by Samuel R. Delany, the social breakdown which you lament for this country was referred to as a “cultural fugue”. Wikipedia describes the condition for individuals: “Dissociative fugue, formerly fugue state or psychogenic fugue, is a dissociative disorder. It is a rare psychiatric disorder characterized by reversible amnesia for personal identity, including the memories, personality, and other identifying characteristics of individuality.” Thus is the state of our political culture. In the novel, the cultures in a fugue state destroyed themselves through warfare and collapsed.

Just started watching The Handmaid’s Tale. Finished episode 3 last night and had difficulty sleeping. I read the book and saw the movie a long time ago and even back then it seemed eerily plausible. Now, with Twittler and Darth Pence in the WH, it seems only a matter of time before this becomes a reality. They huff and puff about how the “evil Moo-slums” are coming for us, but they’re working behind the scenes to make America their own Talibangelist State. There’s nothing these Dominionist freaks would love more than to take rights away from all non-fundies and start hanging homos and atheists in the town square. (Not sure when I’ll be able to muster up the strength to watch episode 4. Need to go to NYC for some retail and restaurant therapy before I do.)

Yes, and 12% of Republicans think Obama wasn’t a natural-born citizen because he was born in Hawaii — which they don’t believe is part of the United States! I think the technical term is: dumb as rocks.

  • The_Wretched

“Nearly half of Republicans (47 percent) believe that Trump won the popular vote.” Or they don’t and answer the other way anyway for their tribe. Eitherway, it’s a big part of why Trump’s lies and the WH’s gaslighting is effective.

  • Craig Howell

One of Abraham Lincoln’s proudest feats was going ahead with the 1864 elections even in the midst of a violent Civil War, even as some were predicting that would be impossible and/or undesirable. If Lincoln could manage it (and he was a Republican, a little-known fact to some, it seems), Trump had better follow suit regardless of his baseless accusations of voter fraud.

    • another_steve

Lincoln understood and respected the underlying principles of a democracy.

      Donald Trump does not.

      • Karl Dubhe

Lincoln wasn’t alone in his commitment to democracy and most of its principles. The ones they violated, they ‘justified’ – well, tried to.

I think that Donald actually does understand the principles of democracy. If you seek to destroy something, you must first understand it. I wonder if Donald’s acting ability hasn’t been underrated.

  • Uncle Mark

I’m reminded of how the Republicans tried floating this crap during W’s time in office…claiming that we’re at war; how can we risk ‘changing horses midstream’ or take our focus off the Iraqi “war” (occupation) to have an election? This time they were reminded loudly that we had elections during WWII (1944) and even during a goddam civil war (1864).

What’s with these fucking Republicans being all-too-willing to shelve democracy to stay in power? With all the gerrymandering, voter suppression and cheating, is it any wonder that they would be willing to even collude with a foreign power to cling to power?

They see themselves as the master race and think their own lives will be so awesome and full of riches. To hell with democracy, then.

  • Christopher
  • Talisman

If that’s the case, let’s nullify 2016 and put Obama back in the White House.

    • another_steve

At this point, I’d settle for putting Bush the Idiot from Texas back in the White House.

  • Halou

American elections of the past have not been postponed even for civil war or foreign invasion, as in the case of last year. But these ‘morans’ want to quit the game now because Dear Donald’s feewings are hurt by the fact that more people voted for Hillary than for him, of course the number of allegedly fraudulent votes has to be bigger than Trump’s popular vote loss.

  • Daveed_WOW

    TRUMP. IS. HITLER.

    • another_steve

The Nazi analogies are unavoidable, yes.

    • Bad Tom

Poe is in abeyance until the world is returned to an upright position.

      • KnownDonorDad

Godwin, I think, is what you’re looking for. Although Poe is getting so close to reality it’s hard to tell….

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

Not the first time, I’ve heard you say that.

      • Daveed_WOW

Not the first time it was true 🙂

        • Ragnar Lothbrok

I so Wish you were wrong. But your’e not

  • another_steve

Wow. The stupid is strong in today’s Republican Party.

  • Tomcat

Half of the republicans is equal to one third of the legally registered voters,,, so you lose and elections will go on as legally scheduled.

  • Tomcat

Since most voter fraud is actually the suppression of the vote, how would suppressing it even more help the problem at all????

    • Lizard

Republican logic tends not to align with, you know, reality.

  • bambinoitaliano

Sure why not cancel the election all together.

  • Bad Tom

How ’bout we just cancel the LAST election, and install somebody half-sane?
    ——-
If we’re giving up on Democracy and all that.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

Let’s give it to the person who actually received more votes.

  • teedofftaxpayer

I half expect when he loses the election in 2020 he will do what he can to void the election by stating it was a fraud and that he’s the legitimate president.

  • olandp

Just that pesky Constitution standing in the way, but they will take care of that soon enough.

    • Vista-Cruiser

Republicans are in full control of something like thirty states. Once they get a few more, they will have enough power to amend the Constitution unilaterally.

  • KarenAtFOH

So the trumpomatic is projecting again. Yes, there was election fraud, on the part of the RUSSIANS, ASSHOLE.

  • JT

Half Of Republicans Back Postponing 2020 Election Until Trump Solves Nation’s Imaginary Voter Fraud Problem

They are fascists through and through.

  • SoCalGal20

And yet, Trump and Hillary are exactly the same!!!

Fuck anybody who claims to be progressive and thinks this is just a “price” we have to pay for imaginary Progressive Utopia Land which will magically appear after we somehow overcome the suspension of our Constitution and stripping of our voting rights

  • Cerberus

Yup, this is the terrifying shit. Trump has normalized full fascism for the GOP crowd and they are running with it more and more every day. Combine that with the frighteningly high number of literal neo-nazis that have been springing up and marching and it’s clear we’re in a very dangerous time for what shreds remained of our democracy.

  • Readen Reply

And if they get their way… there will never be another election.

  • Ben in Oakland

    The stupidity of this.

If there was a voter fraud problem, and trump said the election was rigged, a simple syllogism might indicate that trump is illegitimate.

Do they never think of this?

  • JWC

If they want to postpone the 2020 election and they think they should Then is it any less stupid to curtail the current election til this shit is cleared up

  • Raising_Rlyeh

Once again, they show how little they care for or understand the constitution. There is nothing in there that says you can postpone an election. One has to wonder how long they are willing to postpone it. If these fuckers want a king go to saudi arabia.

  • ColdCountry

NONONONONONO!!!! Damn all their willfully ignorant asses to their make believe hell. And what is with all the “peaceful, loving, christians” salivating for war? I HATE willfully stupid people!

  • Edmund Allin

♫ “Stephen the prophet and Robert the priest anointed Donald king.
    And all the people we-e-e-e-ept”

  • ColdCountry

NONONONONONO!!!! Damn all their willfully ignorant asses to their make believe hell. And what is with all the “peaceful, loving, christians” salivating for war? I HATE willfully stupid people!

  • OdieDenCO

try it you traitorous pigs and this country will actually see fire and fury the likes of which have never been seen before!

  • Renfield

One question has been nagging me for a while: Are they dumb because they are Republicans or are they Republicans because they are dumb?

  • Steve Smith

I really think that you’ll have to take to the streets. The way things are shaping up over there, I can’t see much alternative. How did a once-great nation descend so quickly into such a fucking mess?

    • Vista-Cruiser

Millions and millions of Americans who lean Democratic no longer bother to vote in elections.

    • KnownDonorDad

Hey now, at least Trump didn’t use a private email server. /s

  • Elaygee

There should be a psychological exam given before allowing people to vote. Believing in an imaginary sky god who threatens everyone with eternal hell if they don’t do what it says is just another mob style RICO cult.

  • boobert

Rigging the election with the help of the Russians isn’t good enough anymore. Let’s just not have them .

  • Travis Morrow

If elections are suspended in my country I will become a terrorist in about twenty minutes.

  • andrew

It’s hard to imagine that 40-50 years ago the Republican Party was mostly the party of upper middle class and upper class fairly rational conservative WASPs. I wouldn’t have voted for that party, but just look at the disaster that it has become today.

  • JCF
  • EdA

I hope that I am not the only person to remember that the notorious vote suppressor Ken Blackwell suggested cancelling the 2002 election because of 9/11.

  • KnownDonorDad

Under what authority? You can’t just suspend the Constitution. That would require a coup. I can’t see this realistically happening, but if by some chance it does, we’re officially a fascist state.

    • Gianni

Donnie, Constitution, Understand – that does not compute.

  • nipper
  • leastyebejudged

    Conspiring for the Coup d’état.

The one which the military and police will happily participate in.

Don’t worry, you won’t miss the freedoms you’ll lose any more than you’ve missed the one’s the Patriot Act took away.

  • sacrob

I would take to the streets with torch and pitchfork should the fascists try this shit. And I hardly would be alone.

  • Gianni

In general, I’d say that Republicans are prone to unadulterated nuttiness.
