Far-Right Websites Launch Boycott Campaign Against Rachel Maddow In Retaliation For Sean Hannity

Far-right extremist Brent Bozell, who is best known here for calling President Obama a “skinny ghetto crackhead” during an appearance on Fox News, is leading a call for advertisers to boycott the Rachel Maddow Show. The move comes in retaliation for the boycott movement against Fox host Sean Hannity. Via Bozell’s outlet Newsbusters:

Media Research Center (MRC) President Brent Bozell today announced a new campaign that will focus on informing the American public and corporate advertisers about leftist shows and on-air personalities who use their programs to spread vicious lies and hate.

“We are putting the radical left on notice that we are on to them. We know the inside-outside game that radical organizations are playing with their leftist allies in the “news” media. The radical left’s effort to silence conservative media by targeting their advertisers with coordinated smear campaigns has gone unanswered, but today is the day the conservative movement fights back, but with a big difference: We’ll tell the truth. And we’ll take no prisoners.

“Every network and cable news channel is today on notice that the MRC will be closely monitoring their leftist opinion programs and informing their advertisers and the American public when these programs and hosts go beyond political commentary and engage in smear, hate and political extremism. The difference between our effort and what the left is engaged in is that we will demonstrate to the advertisers of these programs how the hosts of these shows are not simply engaged in disagreeable political discussion but rather outright hate and personal character assassination.

From the far-right site Media Equalizer:

To counteract these fascistic tactics, #StoptheScalpings has decided to fight fire with fire. As long as Media Matters continues to attack conservatives, we will return them the same kindness. We begin with Rachel Maddow who has been the biggest purveyor of lies and propaganda in the media today. Like Media Matters, we will now inform the public and the advertisers about who they are financing.

While we prefer not to be involved in this type of effort, we need to be on equal footing. We will continue to announce the advertisers that finance these efforts and support these hosts who allow lies and conspiracy theories to permeate the airwaves. If Media Matters ceases these type of assaults, we will do the same.

Until then, we will list every advertiser that supports hosts like Rachel Maddow, an outright liar, and someone who deceives the public and defames conservatives on a daily basis. The question to these advertisers is: do they know what their dollars’ support?

Conservatives everywhere are joining #StoptheScalpings, unveiling the advertisers who sponsor the shows, hosts and networks that support the suppression of the First Amendment. Calls, protests, and subscription revocations will continue to occur in rapid response to this miscarriage of justice. The American people will not stand for any company or organization that believes in silencing the voices that do not agree with their own.

        Tell that to Kathy Griffin.

          On the Fuck-Up Scale of 1 to 100, Kathy’s was a 100.

        • Daveed_WOW

I have a feeling it will give her an edge that she never had before.

    • Judas Peckerwood

That’s no guarantee that she won’t be fired if the pressure becomes intense enough. Phil Donahue had MSNBC’s highest-rated show when he was fired in 2003 for speaking out against the build-up to the Iraq War. Never underestimate the cravenness of media executives.

      • Blackfork

If we all support her advertisers by doing things like buying their product all the way up to phoning them with requests to keep advertising with her, then we’ll win.

        • marshlc

Yes, this – money does indeed talk.

Even small things that cost nothing, like likes on Facebook, are the straws that advertisers and network execs look at.

        • Janice Archer Weaver

Win with Rachel Madcow? What would you win? An hour of the biggest conspiracy theorist on news tv continuing every night???

      • CanuckDon

There was a very different public mindset back then. Americans were still recovering from 9/11 and revenge seemed like the antidote. The majority weren’t questioning the unreasonable decision to go to war with a country that didn’t have anything to do with it.

The majority are in agreement about Trump and that’s why they’re drawn to Rachel’s continuing investigations…to get some sense of reason and a hopeful antidote that will get rid of him. I also sense that corporate businesses are not supporters of Trump either.

        • Judas Peckerwood

I strenuously disagree. Just look at how MSNBC and CNN are in a race to the bottom in an attempt to emulate Fox News. Anyone who thinks that mainstream media executives will put the best interests of this country ahead of profit is living in a dream world.

          • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks this…

          • Janice Archer Weaver

BSDNC & Clinton News emulates FOX? FOX shows both sides whereas the other two are 100% an arm of the DNC!

          • Daveed_WOW

That’s quite a troll act you’ve got going there. Halloween isn’t for a few months, but I love the costume.

          • Janice Archer Weaver

You troll accusers need to give it a rest! Even though Libs only believe in Free Speech if you’re using their speech, Conservatives have the right to use Facebook to comment as a U.S. Citizen. I have no idea what your ridiculous Halloween Costume remark has to do with anything (???)

        • The US news media has never been held responsible for aiding and abetting the lies and propaganda that sold American on the Iraq War. CNN Europe showed very different reports on the same stories than CNN in the US. Even the NY Times international edition published different articles. The US versions didn’t dare publish the serious doubts about the “evidence” the administration was pushing and of course the Times even published Judy Miller’s treasonous lies which the administration then used to show that even the liberal NY Times was publishing this information. So yeah, that’s what 2003 was like.

          • Daveed_WOW

            We remember.

      • Jerry Kott

and there is no guarantee that she is willing to live with the pressure of being a Ray of Hope. These are very troubled times but someone has to go out on the limb. The Network boys have to be careful about shooting themselves in the foot-these are different time.

  • crewman

There’s a wee bit of difference between Rachel Maddow and Sean Hannity. One vales facts and has a lot of integrity. The other is on the verge of being fired from friggin FOX NEWS for propagating conspiracy theories. The right wing really loves, loves, loves false equivalencies. I think this is because they’re easy to create. Any 3 year old knows how to say, “Nu uh, you are.”

    • Harley

Not to mention Maddow has a phd from Princeton and Hannity is a college dropout.

Rachel Maddow, an “outright liar”? Yeah right. I’ve been following her since her Air America days. A liar she is outright not.

    • Christopher

She’s the most accurate of the bunch!

And when she does make a mistake, she owns up to it immediately!

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

And when you go to her site, there are often extensive notes and links for almost every statement or claim made during the broadcast. I’m not aware of any other show that does that, and she is an opinion show, not straight news and yet she and her team are that scrupulous.

        • TrollopeReader

and when she leads into an interview, she asks the subjet “did I get that correct?” ….and 99.99% of the time they assure her she is spot on .

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

Yes, that is almost always the default, thank you for posting it. I often get the impression that the guests are amazed at how she distills complex events with such clarity and accuracy as if she did a better job of explaining and giving context than even the guest could have. And in the very rare occasion where she makes a misstep, she aways allows the guest to clarify. [Just like they do on Fox, amirite? /s]

But let’s not forget river otters and the unforgettably adorable way she describes teeny, tiny things.

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

Moe the river otter – as broadcast during the Ebola outbreak

      • AmeriCanadian

I love how she asks her guests if she “got anything wrong” during her introduction to the topic of discussion with said guest. I’ve yet to hear a guest tell her yes.

        • wmforr

          Or did you mean “yes”?

          • AmeriCanadian

You are correct. I meant yes. Edited.

        • TrollopeReader

          oooh…like minds and all ! ^

      • wmforr

What I love about her (and her remarkable staff) is that she gives us the whole background of the story, back to the forties if necessary, not just today’s headline. Watching Rachel is like a lesson in American history. Which most Americans, including the Trump, sorely need.

        • Skokieguy [Larry]

And that is one of her frequent criticisms (like when she unveiled Trump’s tax returns). I see it as a huge feature, not a bug. But to people who get their news in 145 characters, paying attention and studying context before discussing current events is laborious and uncomfortable.

          • David Walker

Plus they run the risk of learning something or, even worse, agreeing with something she says.

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

Never fear, Fox will tell them what to think about anything she might say.

    • WitlessProtection

I love how she lays out the story, piece by piece, connecting each one to the one before and setting up the one to come. Then in a marvelous coups-de-grace she nails it shut and brings it all together, MOST of the time, she leaves the final decision up to the viewer, she takes a “I am laying out the facts” you decide mentality, that is why I love her and watch her almost every night. I just wish she was on at 8 instead of 9.

      • Xuuths

Move to Chicago where she’s on at 8. Or any place in Central time zone.

    • DonnaLee

I love the idea of them watching the show, checking references, and finding out she’s always pretty dead on the facts. I wonder how many will change their minds if they keep watching?

  • David

OMG Rachel is probably shaking in her Chuck Taylors (she is not even remotely shaking in her Chuck Taylors).

  • Silver Badger

Media Research Center (MRC) President Brent Bozell today announced a new
campaign that will focus on informing the American public and corporate
advertisers about leftist shows and on-air personalities who use their
programs to spread vicious lies and hate.

If you read their full statement, it contains multiple lies, including several that have already been widely and publicly discredited.

    • Lars Littlefield

I’m rather fond of making political statements by choosing stuff that supports the environment, doesn’t pollute, isn’t full of grease and sugar, doesn’t create profits for war suppliers, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I remember the early days when Newman’s Own brand of stuff actually made a difference and was made from natural ingredients. Alas, nothing lasts forever.

    • Jerry

Thanks in part to the Citizens United ruling…the corporate world can more easily buy their own legislative teams and write their own legislation. So corporate bad actors are no longer just those exposed as polluting the environment, having unsafe working conditions, or stealing from their employees.

This isn’t exactly new information. Bozell’s group was founded for this purpose, with very mixed results, decades ago. Media Matters was founded – many years later – to counteract the propaganda mill. They’ve been doing this for years. And for the record, there was no smear of Hannity. He promoted – and still promotes – false stories and he was called out for it. He’s preaching to the choir.

PS: I never liked Kathy Griffith.

  • Thorn Spike

So where’s the list? I need to do some shopping.

  • OdieDenCO

“..Rachel Maddow, an outright liar, and someone who deceives the public and defames conservatives on a daily basis.” looks like libel to me.

    • The_Wretched

1 comment a few seconds ago and 3000 followers? what prog does that for you?

  • Robert Anthony

By all means assholes… try to prove Rachel wrong, do some actual research and discover “Oh shit, she’s reporting truth.” No… you won’t do that, will you. #cognitivedissonance

    • Gianni

Rachel makes sure her reporting is spot on and, if there is ever a mistake, she’s correcting it and apologizing for it as soon as possible.

  • Babaloo

Do these press releases actually list any of these “lies”?

  • Boreal

Yay, another successful conservative boycott. Maddow will be gone like Target, Starbucks, General Mills…………………………………………………………..

    • TampaDink

There once was a time when I could go to Target to buy Cheerios & pick up a Starbucks mocha latte on my way out of the store. But that was long ago… if we consider this morning long ago.

  • EdmondWherever

we will list every advertiser that supports hosts like Rachel Maddow, an outright liar

Will you also list every outright lie of hers?

  • marshlc

Advertisers are skittish creatures, they react to what they’re hearing.

So it’s up to us to make sure they hear the right thing – and to back it up with dollars.

One thing – I suspect that one well written, grammatically correct letter, or post on Facebook, counts for five crazy misspelled diatribes. Advertisers know who has money.

    • Xuuths

Advertisers care less about what they hear, but they respond to what people purchase. Money talks, BS walks.

  • MonochromeMouse

I love the fact that they think people are upset with Hannity because he’s a conservative instead of the fact that he promotes harassing grieving families over easily debunked conspiracy theories.

  • BobSF_94117

    How dim is Sean Hannity?

    Very, it appears.

  • Chrissy

I just called the director of Beauty and the Beast to see how the conservative boycott affected the profits, but his assistant said he’s too busy counting all the money to come and speak.

    • Pip

  • Richard B

Dr. Rachel Maddow’s brilliant investigative journalism covering the Trump-Russia Collusion Scandal has gained buzz and is the ratings leader, tainted Fox News ratings are in a distant second place, and the right wing groups are all riled up looking for a way to take her scalp.
It sounds like the resistance strategy we have been applying is working.

  • wds

Oh yes … all those conservative boycotts work so well … ROFLMAO Let’s see, they closed Disney World, made “Beauty And The Beast” a box-office bomb, forced Target into bankruptcy – so much winning!!!

  • Xuuths

They wouldn’t know the truth if it were a big dildo and poking them in the rear!

  • Liberals everywhere await the list of companies they plan to boycott so we all know where to shop this month. Most companies targeted for boycotts by right-wingers see a sales increase. (The same goes for newspapers that Trump denounces.)

  • countervail

I bet MSNBC is peeing their pants in delight that Rachel will get all this publicity. Go Rachel!

  • SoCalGal20

  • Orly

Yeah… See the problem with that is that the truth is on our side. So, already, you are doomed to fail as usual.

  • DN

I completely support their right to do this. Have fun storming the castle, Brent!

Oh and did anyone else notice they listed Colbert with actual journalists? He’s a fucking comedian, you idiots.

    • DN

Oh and let’s also remember the rough chain of events that led to this call for a Hannity boycott:

      1) Hannity gins up a conspiracy theory
      2) People don’t like it
      3) People inform Hannity’s sponsors that they don’t like it.

That’s it, Brent Bozell. There was no violation of free speech here (only the government can violate one’s right to free speech). In fact, calls for a boycott *ARE* free speech.

But hey, that won’t keep your customers in a state of perpetual outrage, so of *course* you don’t acknowledge that narrative… the narrative called reality.

  • Robincho

Whatever Rachel’s advertisers are selling, my house will now purchase 2 of them instead of 1, and the manufacturers will be told why…

  • KQCA

This is hilarious. People who don’t watch Rachel Maddow are going to stop watching Rachel Maddow. What a bunch of brainless fools.

    • Gianni

Right? That makes all the sense in the world (to them, at least). It appears that they’re going after Rachel because she’s the best.

  • sword

The Far-Right pledge that they will not watch Rachel. The only two are going to switch over to their normal channel….Faux News.

  • jm2

they need to talk to that “Million Moms” group about how well boycotts work!

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

I don’t whether to laugh or cry…because of the laughing.

  • fuzzybits

Oh no,will they tell the world she’s a lesbian!!??

  • Paula

“We are putting the radical left on notice that we are on to them.”

Oh jeebus! Who even talks like that. That sounds like an old Snidely Whiplash comment. Curses! Foiled again!

  • JCF

Is Rachel OK? I can’t remember her being out sick this long before. [Please tell me she didn’t “drink the tea”!]

  • ‘Til Tuesday

By the way, it’s Dr. Rachel Maddow, smartest woman on cable TV. She has an earned Doctorate in Philosophy from Oxford, not a fake “honorary” doctorate that Bible Madrassa’s like Liberty “University” hands out like M&M’s to conservatives. The first open lesbian to get a Rhodes Scholarship, and degree from Stanford in Public Policy. She actually knows what she’s talking about, unlike 100% of the “talking heads” of the right.
