Nate Silver Debunks Conway’s “Landslide” Claim

Such a silly, yet typical lie:

Nate Silver, pollster and editor-in-chief of FiveThirtyEight, fact-checked Kellyanne Conway’s claim Monday that Donald Trump won the presidency in a historic landslide. Lined up alongside the last 10 elections, Silver noted that Trump’s win was, “actually way below average for a winner’s total,” coming in with only more votes than President George W. Bush.

  • pablo

    So…… Are we listening to Nate(Clinton has a 75% chance of winning)Silver?

    • HZ81

It’s just a list of numbers and all he does is crunch poll numbers given to him.

    • Moebym of the Rebel Alliance

Come on, his model was the most conservative. The others had her at above 90%.

    • Dramphooey

I never stopped listening to him. He made it very clear the election was closer than people were saying. I was grieved that night but I didn’t go into complete shock like some did.

      • DaddyRay

Correct – all pollsters were saying Clinton was going to win which just adds to the suspicions about the results

    • tristram

Before election day, Nate Silver was getting trashed all over JMG for ‘exaggerating Trump’s chances in order to get clicks.’

      • And also for saying that Trump had a path to 270+ electoral votes through the midwest which is what happened.

  • HZ81

Maybe she meant “Historic” in that we’ve never had a foreign power influence our election before, embraced fully by one party.

Again,, and I don’t mean this lightly—we’re all fucked. Fucked in a nont-fun way. Later, USA.

  • MikeBx2

Way below average EC votes and an almost unprecedented popular vote deficit. Historic indeed.

    • Jerry

“Historic”…I think she was talking about Trump, so the correct word would have been “histrionic”.

    • Bill Post
      • Piet

        I don’t . . . I don’t understand . . . ?

        • Techie Bear

White woman, Rachel Dolezal, claiming she was black and running NAACP.

          • Piet

Sorry. I should have put a /s on that. It’s a quote from a clip of her being confronted by a reporter and pretending not to understand the question when the reporter asked her pointblank whether she was indeed African-American or not. She still hadn’t given up her “identification” as A-A. I’ll try to remember the /s next time.

    • MarkOH

This is another of the Trumpsters smoke and mirrors. Who CARES what these demented, perpetual liars say? We should be concentrating on the MILLIONS that the American people will be PAYING Trump to live in his own building!

  • T-Batwoman

once again this administration shows it’s genius, they tell ridiculous lies that everyone talks about while they stock the government with individuals who have massive conflicts of interest that no one cares about. the retraction never gets as much traction as the lie itself. this is a new era in politics where the truth doesn’t matter.

    • Moebym of the Rebel Alliance

It’s been called “post-truth”, and that’s a very fitting label.

    • DrRobY

      Wait, there are retractions?

    • Ninja0980

I think the Iraq War established that the Truth doesn’t matter.

  • ericxdc

OT, and on a cheerier note:

Have been listening to this a LOT the past few days:

It’s been called a “limping waltz,” which seems appropriate for this republic, especially the dirge-like passages.

But when the mourning draws to a close, it’s back to the BATTLEFIELD.

Civil disobedience is the one MASSIVE weapon we have left.

Four years of this relentless, toxic BS to come–four YEARS of it!!

And courts soon to be stacked with bigots and gangsters that will piss all over the Constitution and vomit cynical, callous sophistries for DECADES to come!!

      I’ve already got a BELLYACHE.

      • Stephen Elliot Phillips

What are we to do? Ive taken to reading fiction and gardening. Its helping. Its like im watching the slow death of a loved one.

        • billbear1961

          That’s EXACTLY what it’s like.

At the moment, there’s little we can do but protest and demand those who represent us–and REAL journalists–stand UP to these gangsters. We can also support organizations that stand up to them. If those groups go under, this republic is DONE FOR.

Trump has no mandate to take this country back 50 to 100 years.

It can happen only if we LET it happen.

If the push back is big enough, it will give them pause and prevent the worst from happening.

          There MUST be MASSIVE resistance.

The progressive areas of this country are small only geographically. In terms of NUMBERS, we are more than HALF the population.

If all else fails, the most progressive states or areas within states can SECEDE. At the very least, the idea can be seriously placed on the table, because fascism is NOT a legitimate option in a TRULY democratic society.

I refuse to recognize a vote which would “authorize” any democratic government to threaten the constitutional rights of MILLIONS of citizens.

          I don’t and WON’T recognize a democracy’s right to commit SUICIDE.

Tyranny (of the majority or any other kind) isn’t an option in a GENUINE democracy, even if the majority should vote for it.

And the fact IS the majority has NOT voted for it!!

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

You know the russians helped this happen because they have a vested interest in seeing our country destroy itself. And the republicans cant see past their wallets and their jesus to understand this. Its black. Its a fucking black hole

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Can’t Trump trade her in on a new model?

    • can we trade trump in on a working model? doesn’t even have to be new.

  • She’s wrong about the landslide, but her pickle recipe is fabulous! You just stick a bowl of cucumbers on a photo of her face, and they go sour in no time at all!

Wouldn’t try it with anything else though, cause I’d swear just a little ground up Kellyanne could probably kill most any pests

      • Silver Badger

A few pictures of kellyanne should do the trick. If not kill the pests, convince them to move.

        • I shouldn’t share this, but her photos are just wonderful for getting rid of gophers. But don’t let the humane society get wind of it. They say coming upon her photo unexpectedly in a dark underground tunnel is a ghastly cruel way to die.

Please use your power sparingly and wisely.

And Silver? I believe the morning of 11/8 he said Clinton had a 71% of winning, so………there’s that.

  • safari

I took a nap after work. I had a bizarre dream. I found myself living in another city. Some place with hills and large green trees. I stopped off to get something to eat at what I thought was my favorite restaurant. The lights inside were quite dim; the interior dingy brown. As I got to the back, I noticed a man in blue crying over his meal, alternating between drying his eyes and his lips with his napkin. Across the aisle from him was another man shirtless wearing black tights and suggestively humping a waist high partition. A clown in black netting walked past. (None of them were attractive.) I then found myself in a parking lot where a haggled blond woman and her kids had claimed my car for their own and took it. I found myself abandoned at what appeared to be a park memorializing two wars.

I slowly woke up and tried to figure out what the hell is happening to my fantasy life. I’ve since come to the conclusion that my brain is still trying to assimilate Donald being president.

    • TampaDink

Your sleep state brain is further along the path towards acceptance than my waking brain.

      • safari

Awake, there was rage when I thought of Donald being president.

        • TampaDink

My level of rage, every waking hour since watching live coverage of Clinton’s having made a concession call early on 11-9 has been barely contained enough to think about much else.

          • safari

I decided after seeing the voting trajectory that simply getting blackout drunk was the way to go, so I never filed that bit of history.

          • TampaDink

My tolerance level is such that, even though I’d started drinking before the polls closed….and I began to double down after 3 a.m., I was still awake, sitting here at my computer seething with rage when my man woke up around 8:30. I wasn’t sober….but I could not get myself to pass out.

          • safari

That is one way to describe hell.

          • TampaDink

Life in hell seems to be what this election has brought down upon us.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

My friend that is the first paragraph in ur new best selling novel. Get to work

          • TampaDink

The next paragraph……It was the worst of time, it was the fucking worst of times…..and that is the times we live in every day.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Im sure they dont teach the good stuff anymore in highschool but I love that opening.

“It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.”

          • TampaDink

I kind of wish that I’d taken more writing courses in college besides my one quarter of playwriting. Perhaps I’ll try to get focused on these efforts after I get through this next chapter of life. Things are too stressful currently to even attempt.

          • Snarkaholic

Donald was dumb, to begin with. There was no doubt whatever about that…as dumb as a doorknob!

  • Moebym of the Rebel Alliance

What scares me almost as much as this clusterfuck of a transition and the terrifying prospect of a Trop pResidency is the fact that I’m becoming inured to it.

    • Treant

There’s a calculus of terror. Eventually you just can’t release any more adrenaline.

Personally, I’d say ignore the transition for now, and look at what he actually does when and if he’s actually in office. Also, which positions Congress approves (of those that require it). If Trump gets a blank check on his appointments, Congress is signaling either a complete capitulation…or that they’re hanging him out to dry on his own incompetence.

      • Ben in Oakland

        Or more likely, BOTH.

      • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Or congress is counting the piles of money they will “earn” being good dogs for the plutocrats

      • The_Wretched

Interestingly enough, I’m largely incapable of releasing anything but trivial amounts of adrenaline.

    • Moebym of the Rebel Alliance

Too bad leading in the popular vote by 2% doesn’t mean shit if you lose the EC.

      • WillMoor

It means that over half of America didn’t vote for racism, misogyny xenophobia and homophobia. That won’t put Hillary in the White House but it keeps me from losing hope in the humanity of my country.

        • Moebym of the Rebel Alliance

Well, nearly half of America’s registered voters didn’t even fucking vote. So it’s more like a quarter.

        • Mark

It gives me hope that there will be a massive march….

          • Janice Rael

There IS a massive march being planned. It’s in DC on January 21, and has sister marches nationwide on the same date. Find your local NOW chapter and ask them about the location.

Thani YOU for that bit of info. Without fail, I WILL be there!

          • Mark

Doesn’t seem to be a march in Texas. But then, there doesn’t seem to be any NOW in Texas. Their Texas websites are blank, empty, nothing. And – I couldn’t find anything about any march on the national page.

  • i still blame all my elders for Raygun. if that hadn’t happened, none of the rest of what we’re stuck with today would have. OK, maybe some of it would’ve, but look at all the evils Ronnie’s team pioneered as “legitimate” aspects of our once more noble political process. plus, without him, the booosh clan would be sulking back in their bunker in rich people land, instead of thinking they’ll still get yet another presidency someday b/c Dynasty.

i couldn’t vote until it was too late to express my outrage with the whole Raygun clan. from the “war on (some) drugs” to the slow and inevitable destruction of the Great Society of FDR and even LBJ’s dreams, to enriching the MIC beyond any WWII General’s wildest fantasies… yeah. people who gave Ronnie two truly historic margins (and that must include a lot of dem voters, by definition) are people who have a lot of splainin to do to their children and grandchildren, today.

  • MonochromeMouse

Failing human being Kellyanne Conway has to lie about her boss’s victory being historic in order to attract more employers, sad.

  • Tiger Quinn

This is one of the major downsides of Twitter, and one that nobody’s really talking about in terms of how bad it could be – these people now have an open channel to spew lies 24-7, and after long enough the lies don’t necessarily become true, but they do alter the narrative. Take Marco Rubio, our longtime foe, who lately has been trying to tweet half pro gay messages. I’ve already read more than once “oh Marco can’t be anti gay, he sent that nice Pulse message.” This more than anything is really disturbing to me, because it seems to be incredibly effective with barely any effort. You watch, by the end of next week his followers will be convinced that he actually won the popular vote.

    • safari

Social media is part of why we’re in the post-truth era. Lies are far easier to produce than verify and almost impossible to correct once released into the wild.

      • houstonray

They also spread much faster, like a virus that grows exponentially. Scary times indeed.

A lie becomes the truth before you can blink.

      • Tiger Quinn

The media still doesn’t realize they’re being played like a cheap fiddle ! trump settles a lawsuit for 25 mil ? nothing. trump not releasing his taxes? old news. trump keeping his business and has family in key positions? oh well. But trump makes outrageous claims about voter fraud and it’s non stop for 3 days !

Just wait until it’s about e-mails.
That will get round the clock coverage even if there’s nothing there.

  • Well, four years of repeated shitting on the false narrative of some selfighteous uprising that elected trump.

Nope. Same people that voted for Romney, on average, voted for Trump. It’s sad but necessary to pop this bubble of lies and self deceit.

    • IamM

Slightly fewer of them actually, I think.

  • TrollopeReader

used to be that the spokesperson / underling wasn’t supposed to *be* the story, but to comment on it ….

  • sfmike64

They lie about things that are easily verifiable. Which means that they don’t care about facts.

It once again reminds me of Mary McCarthy talking about Lillian Hellman. “Every word she writes is a lie, including ‘and’ and ‘the.” Hellman was so angry about this that she sued, and the suit was still going on when Hellman died.

Whist has long been noted for its influence upon what is termed calculating power; and men of the highest order of intellect have been known to take an apparently unaccountable delight in it, while eschewing chess as frivolous. Beyond doubt there is nothing of a similar nature so greatly tasking the faculty of analysis. The best chess-player in Christiandom *may* be little more than the best player of chess; but proficiency in whist implies capacity for success in all these more important undertakings where mind struggles with mind. When I say proficiency, I mean that perfection in the game which includes a comprehension of *all* the sources whence legitimate advantage may be derived. . . . But it is in matters beyond the limits of mere rule that the skill of the analyst is evinced. He makes, in silence, a host of observations and inferences. So, perhaps, do his companions; and the difference in the extent of the information obtained, lies
not so much in the validity of the inference as in the quality of the observation. The necessary knowledge is that of *what* to observe. Our player confines himself not at all; nor, because the game is the object, does he reject deductions from things external to the game. . . .
[¶] The analytical power should not be confounded with simple ingenuity; for while the analyst is necessarily ingenious, the ingenious man is often remarkably incapable of analysis. . . . Between ingenuity and the analytic ability there exists a difference far greater, indeed, than that between the fancy and the imagination, but of a character very strictly analogous. It will be found, in fact, that the ingenious
are always fanciful, and be *truly* imaginative never otherwise than analytic.

  • Awful nice of Kellyanne Conjob to acknowledge the historic popular vote won by Hillary Clinton as a “landslide” but that unfortunately did not result in an anticipated electoral college victory for her.

  • Orly

They just can’t help but lie. Hopefully they have a very short future.
