SLATE: Trump Has Secret Server Connected To Russia

Slate reports tonight that the Trump Organization appears to have a secret server which communicates exclusively with a high-profile Russian bank. The story is loaded with rather technical details. Here’s an excerpt:

Earlier this month, the group of computer scientists passed the logs to Paul Vixie. In the world of DNS experts, there’s no higher authority. Vixie wrote central strands of the DNS code that makes the internet work. After studying the logs, he concluded, “The parties were communicating in a secretive fashion. The operative word is secretive. This is more akin to what criminal syndicates do if they are putting together a project.” Put differently, the logs suggested that Trump and Alfa had configured something like a digital hotline connecting the two entities, shutting out the rest of the world, and designed to obscure its own existence. Over the summer, the scientists observed the communications trail from a distance.

While the researchers went about their work, the conventional wisdom about Russian interference in the campaign began to shift. There were reports that the Trump campaign had ordered the Republican Party to rewrite its platform position on Ukraine, maneuvering the GOP toward a policy preferred by Russia, though the Trump campaign denied having a hand in the change. Then Trump announced in an interview with the New York Times his unwillingness to spring to the defense of NATO allies in the face of a Russian invasion. Trump even invited Russian hackers to go hunting for Clinton’s emails, then passed the comment off as a joke.

You really must read the full article to get the gist of what the quoted web experts believe.

    “Curiouser and curiouser!”

  • bkmn

    Da-nold Trump, nyet?

  • Frostbite

    HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAAH.

  • justme

    So now we have

    Traitor tRump

  • Elsewhere1010

And I wouldn’t be surprised if Comey was investigating it but didn’t want to say anything for fear of influencing the election.

  • AtticusP

This just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser.

So it turns out that Donald Trump is the Manchurian Candidate.

I thought Laurence Harvey was a lot better looking.

Who knew that a man who can barely speak the English language would be connected to a Russian computer?

    • JT

      Drumpf is the Siberian Candidate.

    • TuuxKabin

Be still my heart. The new couple, on the floor below us, the husbetarian, they’re straight, looks like a young Laurence Harvey, John. He’s from Australia, so the accent is almost similar. A regular dream boat.

    • Ernest Endevor

Also, Laurence Harvey was gay. So he had that going for him to offset the creepy, unable to act thingy.

      • JCF

        Me-OW!

        • Ernest Endevor

What? He was loathed by actors in London for his treatment of Hermione Baddely. Plus he’s as even more weirdly creepy than Hugh Grant..

  • margaretpoa

Uh-oh….sorta puts some unknown not Hillary emails in a proper context, doesn’t it?

  • AtticusP

    Benedict Donald.

  • AW

Why the fuck isn’t this the fucking story on Anderson Cooper right now?

    • margaretpoa

Because rumors about Hillary’s “malfeasance” will always win over facts about anyone else’s in the world of the “liberal media”.

    • bkmn

Because Cooper works for CNN – the Complete Nitwit Network.

    • Because this story is so explosive it needs some corroboration before the big guys will touch it.

      • TampaDink

“This can kill the Republican Party as we know it.”
A year ago, I’d have said the same thing….if trump somehow became their nominee. I so underestimated this.

I think most of the world underestimated this. WTF!

How many years will we as a nation collectively scratch our heads?

      • TuuxKabin

The sooner the rethugliscum party is dead, the better.

        • Yes, but I hope what replaces it is responsible — we are going to have a two party system, and we need to go back to bipartisanship, not confrontation.

          • TuuxKabin

The other party needs to go back to bipartisanship, not confrontation.

CNN, the network that fired Donna Brazile but still employs Corey Lewandowski? Yeah, I’m sure they’ll get right on it.

As this point, to paraphrase Trump, they could release the video where Putin and Donald recreate “Two Girls and a Cup” and it wouldn’t matter to his deplorables.

      • JCF

Um, it’s time to assist RUSSIANS to take out Putin. Russia has to clean up its own mess, if it want to FINALLY join the Family of Nations in the 21st century.

        • bambinoitaliano

Unfortunately, the Russians no longer has the power. If you look at the current political situation in the US, democracy is eroding. Corporations are almost in control of the voting powers. Trump is the last warning sign if Citizen United is not overturned and GOP continue to obstruct SCOTUS nomination, the US as we know it will turn into Russia just like that. Defeating Trump is just the first hurdle, the GOP ought to be destroy if the country wants to reverse the stranglehold the party has on the citizens liberty. There is an urgent crisis that got swept underneath by all the noises the media made between the two candidates.

    • Paula

Ohhhhhh, I do so hope there might be a gulag in the Donald’s future.

    • safari

If these allegations have resulted in a serious investigation, they need to be hashed out to the public this week. There is no excuse for our government knowingly allowing someone compromised by a foreign nation as the leader of the most powerful nation on the planet.

Does anyone else think, “We were sitting on this until after the election, but when Comey sent the Wiener Pics Email Letter to Congress, we thought ‘This.Shit.Is.Going.Down.NOW!!!'”

Drumpf enablers: live by the leak, DIE by the leak!

      • Cuberly

Yep, and the NYTs article that tried to debunk direct ties btwn trump/putin I think was a purposeful leak. Me thinks the FBI is sitting on more than what was in that article.

          • Falconlights

Very few groups in this country love dirty tricks as much as the Rethuglicans. They’ve been at this crap from at least the time of Nixon. About time for them to be hoist on their own petards.

        • TheSeer

It is not enough to destroy just Trump. The Movement needs to be destroyed too.

    • Lawerence Collins

        Nonsense.

Secretary Clinton doesn’t belong in jail.

She belongs in the White House.

I, for one, have already voted to send her there.

        • vorpal

Hear, hear! Hubby and I have both absentee voted for her in VA.

Can’t wait until I get to welcome the second President Clinton to the White House!

Same here! In fact, with the exception of one candidate, all of my candidates are marked “D”. The exception was a local seat that was a independent candidate endorsed by my county’s Democratic Party.

          • cleos_mom

There are a number of Republicans running for local offices on our ballot. Both The Husband and myself plan to leave those blank, other than the candidate for coroner. Figure that’s a good fit.

          • DumbHairyApe

            Me 4.

Hey, how do I get two ballots? Trump was encouraging his voters to vote twice, so I’m assuming we can too???

          • gaymex1

Instead of voting twice, hubby and I convinced a Trump leaner to vote for Hillary and then we made sure that all his paperwork was correct. It was the best we could do…and the least we could do. It was a bitch countering all the bullshit he had bought.

          • Ray Taylor

Trump is having his minions put in a Russian vote for Putin. So that is not a voting twice.

        • Traxley Launderette

          I can’t wait for Tuesday.

Screw straight-ticket voting. I’m going to make sure I go down the ballot:

          X HILLARY CLINTON
          X BLUE
          X BLUE
          X BLUE
          X BLUE
          X BLUE
          X BLUE
          X BLUE
          X BLUE
          X BLUE

          • Todd20036

Me 0. I’ll vote for her in a week.

          • Here in WA state there are no official parties so the candidates state “prefer Democratic party” or “prefer Republican party” – I honestly look over each candidate carefully but I seldom care for the positions held by “prefers Republican party”.

I remember as a youth getting the odd idea that you could go into a voting booth and flip one lever that cast all votes for D or R – this was mid-60s so I must have been hearing something about Chicago politics??

          • ColdCountry

I remember my mother talking about that. She really hated it because if you pulled the lever for the Dems, you could not then vote for any Republicans. You could flick up the lever by a candidate, but that simply removed your vote for them. It did NOT give the vote to anyone else.

        • Falconlights

And I did as well. Trump has the potential to betray this country in ways we cannot imagine.

      • Dan

Gary Johnson sent me a text message approving this comment. At least I think it was him. He’s the only person I know of to try and send a text from a rotary phone.

What is this “rotary phone” you speak of? Does it use something called “copper wires”? I think I’ve heard of that. A LONG TIME AGO. 🙂

          • I have one of those ‘brick’ touch tone phones; I want a rotary version too. The first thing I always did when I got a phone was to remove the bells so when the phone rang all you heard was the striker buzzing.

          • Joe in PA

When my mom moved from her house to an apartment, I “stole” her green “brick”. And it was rotary! I use it as “object d’ art”. 🙂

          • Green? I did not know they came in that color – guess what color I am now! My touchtone is beige with red screw-on caps on the handset.

          • Joe in PA

Yup, avocado green to be precise. 🙂 Well, aren’t you styling with your two-tone phone? 🙂 Good job.

A Veteran Spy Has Given the FBI Information Alleging a Russian Operation to Cultivate Donald Trump

In June, the former Western intelligence officer—who spent almost two decades on Russian intelligence matters and who now works with a US firm that gathers information on Russia for corporate clients—was assigned the task of researching Trump’s dealings in Russia and elsewhere, according to the former spy and his associates in this American firm. This was for an opposition research project originally financed by a Republican client critical of the celebrity mogul. (Before the former spy was retained, the project’s financing switched to a client allied with Democrats.) “It started off as a fairly general inquiry,” says the former spook, who asks not to be identified. But when he dug into Trump, he notes, he came across troubling information indicating connections between Trump and the Russian government. According to his sources, he says, “there was an established exchange of information between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin of mutual benefit.”

In Russia there have been many rumors that Putin has been siphoning off money from the Russian government. His ties to people like this banker, and the ties to Ukraine, Belarus & Kazakhstan all fit with the rumors that get repeated often in Russia. Money laundering, corruption, etc.
Putin has been in power since 1999. I don’t usually believe conspiracy theory stories (fox news style reporting or breitfart slime), so I was a little taken a back when I heard this Alfa Bank connection. That’s a little too real to not have some credibility.

I always thought trump was in this to make money and benefit himself, he could care less about being president. Can’t wait to see what happens.

      • Cuberly

The russian oligarchs are also siphoning off money from the Russian economy big time. It’s a much broader problem. Putin is struggling.

  • margaretpoa

If this explodes, it eclipses the bullshit email trove and this is what gets discussed two days before the election on all the pundit shows.

    • avidreader

Yeah, we just need the conversation to shift from emails and Donna Brazile really, really badly.

I don’t even care if it’s just speculation at this point; the cloud of doubt is enough. Dirty tricks, I know, but it’s politics.

    • Traxley Launderette

With seven days remaining, there is enough time for Trump to engulf himself in flames over it. This line of attack — tying him to Russia — really set him off the last time it was brought up.

This may be one of the drone strikes Hillary has saved for just this moment.

I think it’s very likely there are more to come. Maybe Wednesday and for sure on Friday.

There was an excellent comment following that article. If you’ll allow me the indulgence, I’ll reprint it here:

“Leadbetter Chima Ibeawuchi · Logging Geologist at Diversified Well Logging, Inc
Anybody who thinks and believes that Comey`s move was not politically motivated needs a re-think. Harry Reid in his letter strongly stated that FBI director Comey refused to disclose to the American people that Trump`s campaign has been investigated for connections to Russia and the Kremlin. He kept mum about it and was worried about the timing but he never had qualms with sending a letter fraught with thin innuendoes and speculations about HRC concluded investigation to the Congress committee. He is concerned about his credibility with the GOP at the expense of our nascent democracy. Talk about overt double-standard. A lot of government officials have spoken well about him but his attitude towards handling HRC`s email right from the get go should evokes so much partisanship, it`s unbelievable. He is a disgrace and unfit to be the FBI chief. Period!

I support HRC and i have been a strong critic of the way she handled the email saga for the past year but that does not disputed the fact that she is the most qualified official to vie for the POTUS position. All these Hypocrites that call themselves GOP, where was their outrage when 22 million emails went missing during George Bush`s presidency? Where was their outrage when over 2000 civilians died under George Bush`s watch during 09/11? Where was their outrage when our ambassadors and diplomats were killed during the presidency under a republican President? This bunch of vipers parading themselves as saints in the congress that have caused an endless gridlock for God-knows how-long, have refused to confirm the POTUS candidate for the SCOTUS position, refused to accept the OBAMACARE when it was initially crafted until certain fragments were altered to fit to their concession before it passed and yet we are enraged that spikes in Obamacare are elevated, losing sight of the main culprits complicit in this madness. The economy is on a trajectory of growth and improved GDP from some past days economic report and now we are all exhausted, frustrated and turned off during this political cycle because of another zillion email GOP led investigation. At the end of this drama, it is the American people that suffer the consequences of no dividends from governance.

See Comey`s reaction and his take on refusing to come out to strongly say the Russians are meddling in our election. See link below:

      http://www.cnbc.com/…/fbis-comey-opposed-naming…

If this was not a hit job on Clinton , then i don`t know what else it isn`t. I will never make excuses for HRC, she said it was a wrong judgement on her path, and i accept it, i don`t see Trump ever taking responsibility with contrition for all his endless inadequacies. The GOP is no longer the party of Lincoln but a party of egocentric, pathetic, selfish, me-first-country-last, inbred, douche-bags with no sense of national civility and responsibility. They have danced to the drum of fiasco for so long, if only we as Americans can see the national tragedy for what it is. We demand a bi-partisan cooperation from both parties to putting us first above party. We refuse witch-hunting, character assassination and political bias from these officials. We should stop this whiny unpatriotic attitude when the laws of the land clears an individual of any wrong according to our constitution. We should respect the rule of law in the land and stop inciting and speculating hyperbolic nothingness that could cause a political tsunami with grief consequences.
This madness has got to STOP!”

I couldn’t agree more with this gentleman. (The spelling was his). And now the Alfa Bank server connection in Trump Tower. It think it’s too late for that news to affect the election, but the follow-up could be interesting in the months ahead.

  • PLAINTOM

I think this was the grenade planted in Senator Reid’s letter to Comey.

          • Ross

            OK. Here goes!

I worked directly for Donald in the 1980s.

One day we were having a meeting. He was at his desk, and I sat across from him, looking at the nice view of Central Park.

His executive assistant, Norma (who I really liked) put a call though. Donald took the call and chatted away all the while ignoring me.

At one point he said: “Oh! I never pay at the end. I always refuse to pay the last 10%. I always come up with some excuse like they did a bad job, and just pocket the money. Some sue of course, but I have lawyers on staff, and we just paperwork them to death. Most give up, and I make WAY more in the end than what my lawyers cost me!”

I was a bit startled that he said this right in front of me. Later, I told a few people about this odd, creepy story.

Fast forward, and Donald fired me. And stiffed me $20K.

A few months later I received a call from a lawyer who worked for HRH Construction, who built Trump Tower. They heard about the creepy story (I have NO idea how), and asked if I would come in and talk with them. I replied that I would be happy to.

I showed up in a room FILLED with top HRH people, and lawyers. They asked me to repeat my story, and if they could record me. Sure, I replied.

They gasped as my story unfolded.

They then said that Donald has refused to pay the last $5M of THEIR contract.

Would I be willing to, in a trial, testify to what I had just told them?

Thinking about how Donald had fucked me over, I replied that I would be DELIGHTED to testify.

Shortly thereafter, I head that HRH had been paid in full.

I often later wondered if I should have gotten a condo out of the deal. Oh well, at least I greatly enjoyed the sweet taste of knowing that Donald’s fucking me over for $20K cost him $5M in the end.

            Tee-hee.

Quite serious. I have a lot of Donnie stories. They are all delicious.

          • Falconlights

Donnie in his underwear? Do tell!

          • Ross

            OK!

While I was working for Donnie, a friend of mine was also working directly for him. I will call my friend…Joe.

While Donnie’s 3-story apartment was being renovated in the latter 1980s, the staircase between the first- and second-floors was taken out, forcing Donnie to go between levels using the public emergency stair.

One morning VERY early, Joe was rushing UP the emergency stair and, as he rounded a corner, he walked right into Donnie. At 5AM!

Joe inwardly gasped, because before him was Donnie in nothing but white briefs! Joe had never seen Donnie in anything less than a suit. And here, before him, was a very tall man, who was very very very white. And hairless. He skin was as white as a baby’s ass, having clearly never seen sun. So, a tall, white, hairless, fat man.

Donnie, unperturbed by this unexpected encounter, started ranting about something regarding the renovation.

As he ranted, Joe had to work REALLY hard to stop himself from bursting out laughing, for one thought kept going through his mind:

Why is the Pillsbury Dough Boy yelling at me?

Joe and I laugh about this to this day.

          • Falconlights

Thank you. That is a great story.

A world where all the little Trumpets and Trumpeters, all the alt-right crowd and Duck Dynasty fans and every damn one of those who chose to vote for him for whatever reason realize that they ate it up. Tip of the fucking iceberg.

  • Traxley Launderette

I have a sinking feeling this may not gain a lot of traction because it’s a story that must be READ. To explain it thoroughly on television would require a reporter with the ability to go into detail in an indoor voice. Rachel Maddow could do it in her sleep. It also requires viewers with above first-grader attention spans who can pay attention to a chain of events without CGI, explosions, dinosaurs, or titties.

    We’re doomed.

    • PLAINTOM

Nope, Trump sells out America, is dupe working for Boris and Natasha.

    • JoeMyGod

Exactly what I was thinking when I was trying to pick out a few sentences for the excerpt. It’s too complicated for social media soundbites.

      • Traxley Launderette

A good chunk of Trump’s base doesn’t understand and has no interest in technology beyond their phones and Netflix. They get their grandchildren to bail them out when their AOL mailbox fills with spam.

None of this chain of events will make sense to them. It will make them angry and confused. They’ll blame Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, George Soros, Hillary, and the media for telling a made-up story that PROVES they’re rigging the election.

Check out the subreddits /r/forwardsfromgrandma and /r/oldpeoplefacebook if you don’t believe me.

      • IamM

        My layman’s reading:

        1) There’s a Trump server in Trump Tower that communicated with two at the Russian Alfa bank in Moscow.

        2) The Trump server is set to ignore incoming communication from most IP addresses, but it interacts with these two. (Suggesting it’s deliberately set to recognize them.)

        3) The pattern of interaction suggests messages are human initiated and their frequency corresponds with US Presidential campaign events.

        4) The Trump server dropped off the net immediately following the researchers questioning Alfa bank about the communications.

        5) A new address was set up for the Trump server and communicated to Alfa bank to reestablish the link.

        • PLAINTOM

The very first communication to the NEW address came from Alfa Bank.

          • Which means someone communicated the new hidden server’s IP to Alfa Bank very shortly after it went online. How this would’ve been communicated, it’s difficult to say. Regular email and phone calls can easily be traced. But an encrypted messaging service like WhatsApp could’ve been used as a relay.

          • ShawnSwagger

Or even before it went online.

      • perversatile
    • Jeffrey

Hillary has already put out a statement with a four point fact list. That will help.

    • Do Something Nice

That and the conclusion is speculation. Final paragraph:

“What the scientists amassed wasn’t a smoking gun. It’s a suggestive body of evidence that doesn’t absolutely preclude alternative explanations. But this evidence arrives in the broader context of the campaign and everything else that has come to light: The efforts of Donald Trump’s former campaign manager to bring Ukraine into Vladimir Putin’s orbit; the other Trump adviser whose communications with senior Russian officials have worried intelligence officials; the Russian hacking of the DNC and John Podesta’s email.

We don’t yet know what this server was for, but it deserves further explanation.”

      • Traxley Launderette

        Perhaps.

But it’s light years ahead of Comey’s “Uh, we think we might have found some emails that might have been sent from Anthony Wiener’s ex-wife, but we’re not sure how many there are or who they were sent to, or even when they were sent, because we only got a warrant to check, like, a day ago. But we’re letting you know that we have no idea what we’re doing with this. We’ll check back with you all when we know what the fuck’s going on.”

        • avidreader

Yes, it’s light years ahead AND it shifts the conversation from emails and Donna Brazile. That’s also important.

        • Do Something Nice

Oh I agree. Comey is toast. Inciting speculation about Wiener’s email content is not appropriate.

      • RoFaWh

When it’s 3 am in NYC, what time is it in Moscow?

      • ColdCountry

    • Luther Kreiger

But this is the problem, in reverse, with every bullshit story put out about the Clintons. Superficially and if you have the existing prejudice any of these memes (benghazi, email bullshit, foundation lies) look bad.

The solution is just to forego all that complicated detail that right wing idiots refuse to listen to and just put out the twit version, everywhere: TRUMP’S SECRET COMMUNICATION WITH RUSSIAN BANK AND PUTIN. Period. The details don’t matter, they never did.

This isn’t “stooping to their level” because in this case it only becomes more damaging the deeper you look into it; unlike every single Clinton meme where if you go into any detail it’s clear it’s cherry-picked ‘evidence’, bad faith assumptions, partisan leakers eager to affect foreign elections, and so on.

      • Traxley Launderette

        I strongly agree with you.

HuffPo right now seems to be doing just that.

Instead, quietly walk up to the target, squat or sit down, and tell them “I’m going to pick you up. Ready?” then gently slip your hands under them and lift smoothly.

Well, this has legs. So far, HuffPo has it as their main headline, DailyKos is exploding, and it’s starting to hit the networks.

    • Treant

I had expected media sources and the Clinton campaign to hit him hard this week.

But this is three in a matter of hours, all very damning.

      • NZArtist

And there are still 8 days to go until the elections. 🙂
By my counting that’s another 64 damning revelations to come!

        • Treant

In this case, I think one sets off the next, and so on. The news sources all want the eyeballs, so we have oppo stories dropping now that might have otherwise waited until tomorrow or Wednesday.

I want this Trump bastard under 100 electoral votes next Tuesday.

          • bkmn

We are in prime time early voting. Every day they wait means tons of votes already cast that can’t be influenced by breaking news.

          • Treant

Still, two-thirds of American voters will vote next Tuesday. You can’t drop stuff so early that the impact fades before the election.

However, most things that are going to have an impact start to do so immediately, and it grows for about a week before hitting the plateau and starting to shrink again. Timing it for Monday/Tuesday the week before is pretty good.

          • avidreader

Remind me not to get on the wrong side of Hillary’s oppo research team.

Ooh, I love it when you talk dirty, Treant!

      • JulieBL

According to Liz Mair on twitter, there’s something else, hidden in some womens’ NDA’s with Trump. She was practically screaming about it tonight on twitter, insinuating that it was bigger than this stuff. Hard to imagine.

Also: Teh Daily Beast has an article where the producer of the Apprentice was dumping bigly on DJT. I wouldn’t be surprised if a tape with the n-word comes out on Thursday or so.

        • Treant

I cannot imagine anything bigger than a practically-literal Manchurian candidate.

The N word won’t hurt him with his voters, but it might motivate African-American Democrats, who are a little less motivated this cycle than in 2008 and 2012.

          • JulieBL

As someone was saying below – these articles are hard to explain, and need a soundbite. A tape of DJT calling someone the n-word (best: referring to Obama!) would be easily disseminated, and easily understood.

That being said, yeah, the Deplorables™ wouldn’t be phased. (fazed?)

      • Stubenville

It’s still early in the week. There could be more.

    • Talisman

The previous tax news had a positive impact on Hills. Here’s hoping this one does, too.

    • avidreader

Fuck, easy now, we don’t want him to have a stroke before being humiliated on Nov. 8th.

    • Finished re-reading the article a 3rd time… it’s pretty convoluted, so I’ll try to untangle it into simple chunks:
      – If you personally take a big business loss, you can write off that loss against your taxes.
      – However, if that loss involves defaulting on debts and having those debts forgiven, you have to count the forgiven debt as income.
      – In the 1980s, some businesses came up with a way of using basically worthless stock swaps to recategorize ‘forgiven debt’…and if that sounds like tax evasion and a violation at least of the spirit of the tax code, you would be correct. So in 1993, the practice was explicitly outlawed.
      – Remember, Trump took his nearly $1b write-off in 1994. So how’d he do this?
      – Trump’s accountants came up with a scheme such that instead of stock, they’d use percentage ownership in a partnership equity scheme. Like say you ‘buy’ equity an otherwise worthless partnership. Guess who had just such a worthless partnership available? Trump, in the form of his failing casinos, which had been propped up by bondholders who were the people who ACTUALLY took the losses. Some of these bondholders would’ve been ordinary retirement investors, for example.

The article closes with the explanation of what Trump was doing:

“He deducted somebody else’s losses,” Mr. Buckley said. By that Mr. Buckley means that only the bondholders who forgave Mr. Trump’s unpaid casino debts should have been allowed to use those losses to offset future income and reduce their taxes. That Mr. Trump used the same losses to reduce his taxes ultimately increases the tax burden on everyone else, Mr. Buckley explained. “He is double dipping big time.”

In any event, Mr. Trump can no longer benefit from the same maneuver. Just as Congress acted in 1993 to ban stock-for-debt swaps by corporations, it acted in 2004 to ban equity-for-debt swaps by partnerships.

Among the members of Congress who voted to finally close the loophole: Senator Hillary Clinton of New York.

      • Herald

Another reason he hates Hillary so much.

      • Ore Carmi

Well, I guess he can’t blame her for that one!

        • That’s the really hilarious thing: Several times now, Donald has said if he was taking unfair advantage of the tax code, Clinton should’ve stopped him.

She did. As a Senator from New York.

          • Ore Carmi

Yes, I remember that from one of the debates!

I only had 12 – very cute kids but noticeably less than prior years

I’ve had well over 50 kids so far and they’re still working the street. About everyone in my neighborhood has 5-8 kids. They’re sticky.

I noticed all of the costumes were store bought – nothing home made anymore

          • EweTaw

Plenty of little kids dressed in old sheets here in the Avenues. Mormons aer too cheap to buy new costumes for all of their kids every year.

        • NZArtist

          I got a rock.

    • Talisman

I gave out candy for the first 2 years I lived here. The first year, we didn’t have that many, and I was stuck with a lot of candy (learned my lesson to buy stuff I like!). The second year, I bought the stuff I liked, and the kids were rude, the parents were crude, and I swore I’d never do Halloween again. Now, I turn off all the lights and hide.

Over the 15 years I’ve lived here, the number of trick-or-treaters seems to have increased.

Of course, I just realized that all those kids that were rude and crude are probably now adults, and some are taking their own kids trick-or-treating.

Now I feel old. Thanks, Obama!

    • bkmn

I had 30 or 40 kids back in 1991, the year of the Halloween blizzard in Minneapolis (37 inches overnight). The last time we had the porch light on was 2010 when we had six. Just not worth the effort, but I will hit the grocery store tomorrow morning to stock up on candy.

    • Dazzer

My next-door neighbour put out a bowl of sweets on Saturday night with a sign that read: “Help yourself, but don’t ring the doorbell. We’re all single people here and we don’t like kids”.

      • kevin vincent

the media is bipolar they seemed to be running on steam with the Email thing already and we have literal evidence of a connection between Trump and Russia that Comney was aware of and instead sent an email about Clinton this looks BAD for him

    • TuuxKabin

Feeling better? I’ve noticed you’ve been wracked with doubt as to a Clinton victory and down ticket wins. It’s been a roller coaster ride, I know. I hope we’re getting off it soon.

On Monday, NBC News reported that the FBI has mounted a preliminary inquiry into the foreign business ties of Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chief. But Reid’s recent note hinted at more than the (Carter) Page or Manafort affairs. And a former senior intelligence officer for a Western country who specialized in Russian counterintelligence tells Mother Jones that in recent months he provided the bureau with memos, based on his recent interactions with Russian sources, contending the Russian government has for years tried to co-opt and assist Trump—and that the FBI requested more information from him.
    (…)
Mother Jones has reviewed that report and other memos this former spy wrote. The first memo, based on the former intelligence officer’s conversations with Russian sources, noted, “Russian regime has been cultivating, supporting and assisting TRUMP for at least 5 years. Aim, endorsed by PUTIN, has been to encourage splits and divisions in western alliance.” It maintained that Trump “and his inner circle have accepted a regular flow of intelligence from the Kremlin, including on his Democratic and other political rivals.” It claimed that Russian intelligence had “compromised” Trump during his visits to Moscow and could “blackmail him.” It also reported that Russian intelligence had compiled a dossier on Hillary Clinton based on “bugged conversations she had on various visits to Russia and intercepted phone calls.”

It is not outside the realm of possibility that Donald Trump will have been the first formally recruited agent of a foreign power to be one election away from being elected President of the United States.

    • Treant

I actually JUST read that. It’s curious to note that the Russians couldn’t find somebody more coherent than Trump. And it makes one wonder just how much interference there was during the Primaries to sink other candidates.

      • Ross

But Trump is SO easy to manipulate.

        • DaddyRay

And what does that say about almost 40% of America

        • Treant

To a point…if you can appeal to his ego and his wallet. But that’s actually a problem in that you have to KEEP doing that and cannot ever violate that appeal or you’ll lose him.

A crook with honor would work out better. Once bought, they stay bought as long as you keep paying the rent.

      • Talisman

        Money.

        They bought him.

Maybe we can expedite shipping now?

      • bkmn

You are giving the other candidates more credit than they deserve. GOP’ers are not bright (usually Hom Skuled) and adverse to any information from real sources. And they obviously didn’t do any opposition research on Trump since they could have used it to severely damage him. Trump kidnapped their media sources and the GOP base.

I hate to say it, but Romney was right in the 2012 election when he said how dangerous Russia was. We’ll list that as his stopped-clock moment.

      • TrollopeReader

we do need to acknowledge when people on either side are correct — and wrong … that we don’t do so is part of the problem these days …

      • I actually wish now the Republicans had run somebody sane, like Romney.

This is too fucking dangerous, where we are now.

        • bkmn

Today’s GOP has actively worked to push anyone with intelligence, morality and standards out of the party. They have no claim to the mantel of fiscal responsibility or national defense and I wish the mainstream media would talk about that.

        • Falconlights

Sadly, anyone sane has bailed out by this point.

He was pretty spot-on in his assessment of Trump this year, so that’s at least 2 for Romney.

In MA we are “unenrolled” which is a tad confusing, as we are actually on the books … but we are (2015) 39% of registered voters … D’s 32% and R’s 23% …

    • DaddyRay

Her reporting on Ohio was a bit concerning

      • Treant

Ohio is trending red and really isn’t a swing state any longer.

We’re trading it for North Carolina and a more reliably blue Florida, so that’s fine.

      • Lazycrockett

I just think as Ohio becomes more old and white the dems have a less likely chance. Its time for the DNC to let Ohio go and concentrate on Georgia in the future.

        • Ninja0980

          Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina etc.

    • Stefan Heikel

It’s possible to request a new ballot and revote if one changes their mind 🙂

      • Ore Carmi

No, it’s not! (I mean, if you haven’t yet mailed in/turned in your ballot, yes you can request another one, but you can’t turn in more than one.)

      • Talisman

        I’m with her!

Unfortunately, being in GA, there were a bunch of races were the only person running was a Republican. I deliberately abstained from casting a vote in these cases.

Democrats really need to look to the local elections and start trying to recruit, especially for school boards and local and state legislatures. The Republicans learned quickly that the real power is at the local level, and they are willing to throw the national Presidential election to keep their power locally.

      Here’s a Halloween horror story for you….
Trump gets elected. But then he’s indicted by the FBI for something nasty. He’s impeached. Then Pence gets to take over and nominate Supreme Court justices for the next four years.

      • Dreaming Vertebrate

That certainly is horrifying to ponder.

      • bkmn

Pence as President is a nightmare that should motivate any LGBT person to vote against Trump/Pence. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/7615733d8b8857855860ea03fade0abba2fc2a28f1031d5de6ab07b0eceb3d02.jpg

      • Talisman

If Dems don’t win the House / Senate, but Clinton is elected, we’re looking at the possibility of an impeachment.

Only 2 Presidents have been formally impeached by the House (impeachment doesn’t mean removal from office). In both cases, the formal trial by the Senate resulted in acquittal.

Worse, considering how petty the Republicans are, we’re going to face a never-ending, soul-wrenching series of impeachment proceedings by the House. Just another excuse to do nothing.

        • bkmn

Which is why we need to talk to all of our friends and allies to remind them that the down-ballot races are important, almost as important as voting for a President.

        • Lazycrockett

          Executive Orders, Baby.

          • Talisman

Any President can retract/replace a previous President’s EO.

The legality of EO’s has yet to be decided – and you can be sure a Republican-led Congress will sue Clinton so that the SCOTUS has to rule on them.

    • Homo Erectus

They also announce further investigation of emails they haven’t even seen yet, but which apparently were neither to or from Clinton. But they give every impression of these being Clinton campaign emails.

At least two Trump-Russia stories break just today in the news, and the FBI’s only official comment is they don’t see anything untoward or meriting further investigation.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/01/us/politics/donald-trump-tax.html

Tax experts who reviewed the newly obtained documents for The New York Times said Mr. Trump’s tax avoidance maneuver, conjured from ambiguous provisions of highly technical tax court rulings, clearly pushed the edge of the envelope of what tax laws permitted at the time. …

Moreover, the tax experts said the maneuver trampled a core tenet of American tax policy by conferring enormous tax benefits on Mr. Trump for losing vast amounts of other people’s money — in this case, money investors and banks had entrusted to him to build a casino empire in Atlantic City.

      A simpler story:
“We wanted to make sure that Russia wasn’t influencing the campaign. We watched how often Trump was looked up using the internet phone book (DNS). His computer’s activity with a computer in Russia owned by Alfa bank was suspicious. Ultimately, by looking at the metadata — the to and from connections and trying to connect to Trump’s server as well– we believe that there are exclusive, human-to-human communication between the Trump organization and Alfa Bank in Russia.”

          • djcoastermark

Pretty good. We didn’t get costumed but went to our local hangout bar to check out the costumes and contest, went to eat at at another and check out more costumes and then went to another nightclub for their big contest. I always get a kick out of the costumes. One nice thing with the holiday on a monday is that we didn’t have to be out all hours of the night. (and didn’t overindulge too)

          • TuuxKabin

You’ve got quite a system going. We’d do that in Mexico. Arrive before Halloween with the real plan to observe dia de Muertos, November 2. We’d go to cemeteries, observe from the perimeter, we’d watch parades in the towns, view the exhibits at churches and public places and walk along the streets looking into the glow of candles at the ‘ofrendas’ in the houses. Patzcuaro, in Michoacan has a candle lit flotilla cross the lake to an island cemetery. We always watched from a disco, I mean distance, rather than intrude. Here’s a bit of info regarding Patzcuaro and dia de Muertos.

What a cool thing to do. I love all the amazing things that go on in this world. To bad most have closed their eyes and minds to take in what other places have to offer.

          • TuuxKabin

It IS a big ol’ wonderful world out there. Wish we could have seen more. We also tried to visit all the UNESCO Cultural and Heritage Sites we could, when in Mexico. When living there from 2006 – 2012 in Mérida, Yucatan we hit all the Maya sites we could.

This morning, while getting my dia de Muertos info together for posting and emailing a friend sent a link, and within the link we found:

            http://www.unesco.org/culture/ich/en/lists

It’s UNESCO’s list of “Intangible Cultural and Heritage’ events. Dia de Muertos being one of them. The list is arranged by the year “Intangible Cultural and Heritage” events were designated. It identifies the ‘event’ and the country. I copied all the events in Mexico and sent them to friends down there.

It’s a good distraction from everything else, apart from this election cycle, it’s as interesting to me, IMHO, as geography, social studies, and anthropology classes. The rest of the world ‘goes away’ and I fall down the rabbit hole of which ever particular site or event attracts me. I’d like to see a coloring post card booklet dedicated to UNESCO.

So. By honoring and holding the memory of my ancestors, family, friends and people who were once in my life I include yours and hubby’s tho I don’t know them, they’re in the spirit world and I honor them.

            Abrazos.

          • djcoastermark

I’m not sure you read a post I did recently, and it is Certainly not a UNESCO site, but I just found out my grandmothers house was recently torn down. It was built in 1870!! (she passed a few years back after being taken care of by my parents for many years) The place wasn’t special by any means but it is where I had lots of happy memories. (though the staircase up to the second floor was to die for. The construction and lay out of the rooms were very different from how things are done now) I have always advocated to people I know, to go to and appreciate what is our past and to learn from it.Even those simple things, though they may not be the Taj Mahal or Chitchen Itza, they are what makes us as humans.

          • TuuxKabin

I didn’t read that post, and tho it wasn’t a UNESCO site, to you and your family it was something more culturally and historically significant and as you mention “what makes us as humans”.

We also take a drive thru my old neighborhood when visiting the SFBay Area just to see how it’s holding up. What was once working class migrants from the Dust Bowl, smattering of nationalities from the Pacific Rim, a few Mexican, other than my parents, and a lot of Southern Blacks, all more or less thrown together by the work in the shipyards. Mom was a Rosie the Riveter. Repeating what you said, these things are “what makes us humans” and that’s my joy of living in NYC, 4.4 million of us are immigrants.

  • There is part of me that is not surprise.. Trump’s sole banker since his major bankruptcy in 1995 has been Deutsche Bank. There is a good chance that Deutsche Bank or their affiliates has been raising capital for Trump via private placement investments in Russia. He could also has some sort of off shore partnerships that the private placement investors have put money into as well.

        • Lumpy Gaga

      • Lumpy Gaga

Honestly, you’ll say ANYTHING to get in my pants!

      • Treant

I live here. Personally, from the polls and from what people are saying, I’d say Toomey is in trouble. And it isn’t because McGinty is a great candidate (response to her is remarkably tepid), but because it’s simply a bad cycle for Republicans.

He’s now running away from Trump as far and as fast as he can.

        • Ninja0980

Hopefully he won’t be able to run that far.

        • Stubenville

Agreed on all your points. What have you been able to learn from the McGinty ads other than:

          1. McGinty supports Planned Parenthood
          2. McGinty supports abortion rights.
          3. Toomey supports neither
          4. Toomey is a high-octane ex-banker who favors the rich

          Anything else?

          • Treant

Nothing. We should point out that #1 and #2 are enough for me to support McGinty and #3 and #4 are enough for me to vote against Toomey, though. 🙂

  • The questions here are:
    1. Has Russia contributed either financially (probably- we need a smoking gun, we are close but do not have one yet) or through other means (illegally, through highly sophisticated email cyber warfare (yes) to Donald Trump’s campaign?
    2. Has Donald Trump expressed political positions that are atypical of a conservative Republican and beneficial to Putin’s Russia – Yes.
    3. Will Russia benefit from a Trump Presidency – Yes, overtly and possibly through secret deals we do not know about
    4. Has Russia interfered in elections among our Western allies recently – Yes
    5. Has the FBI/Comey exhibiting bias in not releasing investigative information pertinent to Trump (looks like it) — while releasing information about Clinton’s emails so close to an election — (yes). The question is why?
—- We all know that Trump and his people are shrewd operators who have been getting money and support from Putin and his players, and that these people are not stupid. We need more time to flush evidence out to get the lamestream media (thank you Sarah!) more interested in covering this issue. Mark my words, the next 24 hours will see more information coming out about how Putin has been playing Trump. Stay tuned.

    • Lazycrockett

all we have to do is muddy the waters. Just like Comey did.

      • Oh I would not be surprised if this Slate story is exactly that 🙂

    • The answer to all of your questions is ‘yes.’

      https://twitter.com/JoyAnnReid/status/793305555335016448

      • If I were any member of the Republican foreign policy establishment — McCain, Powell (who has endorsed Hillary), Rice, even the two Bush Presidents (one who has endorsed Hillary) I would be sick to my stomach right now. Massively. You have to hand it to Putin. He has done a better job of playing the USA better than any Russian politician since Joe Stalin.

        • Yeah… I know there are still at least a few decent Republicans out there. I do feel bad that they lost their party because they created a monster they couldn’t control.

We NEED two sane parties, but only have one. And it’s not the GOPers.

More a test of what the American people would do. He’s trying to disrupt the election, disrupt democracy itself. All he has to do is get the intertubes in a tizzy over some “accident”. The resulting shit show over a few days will prove what a mess we’re in politically, and then the “accident” will be cleared up — much to do about nothing — and he’ll have accomplished his 2016 goals.

    • OMFG! Is this the first rumbles of the beginnings of World War Three?

      • BobSF_94117

“First rumbles”? This started months ago.

Russia isn’t stupid the second they go that they have every other nuke owning country (especially the NATO ones) sending nukes their way in retaliation

      • zhera

Yes, per today that’s true. If Trump wins, how will NATO do in two or three years?

Putin’s playing a long game and Trump is the puppet.

    • Max_1

      Keep practicing that Russian, comrade.

      • zhera

After they got caught I wonder why they didn’t switch to static IP
addresses and skip the DNS, And don’t worry, the NSA probably has
copies of everything transmitted between these two. It is probably
encrypted but they have their ways of reading this stuff.

I have a friend in the cyber security business who just told me about how they discovered this secret server. It’s only designed to send messages, but one server is allowed to send messages back. And that one server is in Moscow.
