Gay Soldiers’ Wedding Kiss Photo Goes Viral

Via USA Today:

Spc. Shane Adriano and Pfc. Tristian Resz chose the Greene County Courthouse as a venue because they wanted something small and intimate for their Feb. 11 wedding. It was to be just the happy couple, a few supportive friends and a judge. But after they shared their “first married kiss” photo on Facebook, their small ceremony turned into a worldwide event.

Adriano told the News-Leader they have long since lost track of how many times the photo has been shared. “It just keeps getting reshared,” he said. “We had a little bit of negative comments on there, but I wasn’t even expecting that many people to like it and share it over and over again.”

Adriano said they appreciate the warm wishes coming from around world. Resz said many of the positive comments have come from veterans and people in the military.

“The majority of people who were commenting and sharing, they were doing it because they are proud of how far the military has come,” Resz said. “Up until 2011 it was illegal to be openly gay in the military. Now, it’s legal for us to be married.”

The couple lives off-base near Springfield, Missouri.

agreed…and the fact that they are interracial will add just a few MORE exploding head to the fundys who see the pic. (and YES, as a man who is part of an interracial gay marriage, I HAVE had smart ass remarks about the interracial part. just….boggles the mind!)

When our son married his wife, we didn’t expect any problems in that regard and were not disappointed. Things have come a long way in our extended family.
Maybe, just maybe, there’s hope the 21st century can bring an end to the abominable treatment of non-white skinned HUMANS in our country.

        • Ninja0980

Trust me, if not for SCOTUS there would still be places interracial marriage would be banned.

I remember attending my nephew’s birthday party and this kid coming up to everyone and showing his new discovery. “Have you ever mixed ice cream and cake together? It’s good!”. The visual being that he was mashing vanilla ice cream and chocolate cake in his bowl. I waited until he left before saying to my BF, “Bitch, I’ve been doing that all my life”. The visual being that I’m chocolate and my spouse is strawberry. Well, strawberry carpet.
Yes, I do tend to see people as ice cream or raspa flavors. I still haven’t figured out pistachio. I just know it has chocolate syrup on top. Try it, it’s good!

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Not only are they adorable, but I love the smiling judge. It’s heartening to know there are plenty of people of a certain age who are fair minded, forward thinking people. Congrats, guys. May you know much love, peace, passion, and happiness.

    • Bob Black

Last year I had the privilege of standing with two of my best friends when they got married in a small town courthouse in rural Minnesota. The judge was almost giddy at the chance to perform the ceremony. While we were signing the license he spoke about how so many of his duties as a judge are negative, sending people to jail, listening to people argue and lie to him etc. He said nothing makes him happier than when he looks at his schedule and sees that he has a wedding or a chance to finalize an adoption. He actually got choked up when talking about it. The judges, county clerks and other officials who are on our side FAR out number the ones like Kim Davis who are against us. Let’s stay positive. The glass is half full. We are winning this war.

      • Gene

One of the clerks in one of the MOST eastern and high appalachian..WAY farther back in the hills than that Bitch in Rowan Co, is a friend of mine. She told me she feels the same way, as do most of the clerks in the counties around her, none of whom have refused a license, and, that for them and the judges, a marriage is a thing to be celebrated…they see so much negative shit, a happen even it celebrated. We see the “train wrecks”, but, most of the clerks and judges are happy for us…thousands around the country, and one who made a fool of herself. I expected worse, truth be known.

We are more than half full..and with time, it will only get better (if future SCOTUS rulings dont hurt us, but even for that, the window is closing)

        • Reality.Bites

This is the thing that encourages me – no matter how many “religious freedom” laws they pass, most people don’t have the slightest desire to discriminate against us.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

Yes, I agree. The problem for me is that those who are so opposed are like rabid dogs; intent on the destruction of others, out of control, and so focused on their plans to make others miserable they steamroll over others. While the LGBT community has more straight allies than enemies at this point, I worry that far too many allies think the fight is over. It isn’t by any means.

        • vorpal

The worst part about it is that these rabid dogs (a very apt description) could not possibly be more convinced that THEY are on the side of good and doing what is best for society.

          It truly boggles the mind.

I cannot believe that people who would slaver openly about how excited they are to watch gay people suffer eternal torment in hell from their afterlife in heaven (which I have heard multiple times) can possibly view themselves as good.

          • Wynter Marie Starr

I can get away with saying quite a few things to such people by virtue of my straight privilege. I refuse to listen to such nonsense and when confronted with it, I make a point of correcting such garbage. I was subjected to the idea of hell by a relative when I was a child. I refused to accept Jesus as reality, so I’ve been on that end of things. I fought back like a child. I’m an educated adult now and such people no longer have a chance in hell (haha) of getting me to agree. I have no problem telling them they aren’t good people no matter what their mythology has to say about it.

          • Octavio

            Thanks. Seriously. Thanks. 🙂

          • Phillip in L.A.

      • perversatile

Damn you purveyor of sliced onions- xoxo

  • Bill_Perdue

Sweet. Our victory in the fight for marriage equality was long and hard, beginning with Bill Clintons rabid support for and signature on DOMA. And the result is that people can get married if they want. That’s true here and in a growing number of counties.

    Have fun, guys.

    • Reality.Bites

Of course. As everyone knows, marriage equality was in effect till Clinton signed DOMA.

The fight for marriage equality started BEFORE DOMA was thought of. DOMA was the RESULT of the fight for marriage equality.

But then, you knew that already. You just had to find some way, no matter how specious, to connect any story to your rabid hatred for all things Democratic.

      • BobSF_94117

Personally, I’ll never forgive Bill Clinton for rounding up all the unicorns and having that infamous barbeque.

        • sherman

People who don’t learn to let things go turn into Bill Perdue.

          • BobSF_94117

Sniff, but, but they were so sparkly and frisky. Plus I didn’t even get invited to the BBQ.

          • edrex

trust me, unicorn is better with Carolina vinegar sauce, not that other stuff.

          • sherman

For what it’s worth, they tasted like chicken.

          • Reality.Bites

I always assumed they tasted like horse.

          • vorpal

People who have never been loved turn into Bill Perdue, i.e. needy little judgmental attention whores who constantly try to put themselves on a pillar to gain some undeserved semblance of self-esteem while deliberately keeping people at arm’s length.

          • Bill_Perdue

Hi vorpal. Nice little fantasy you’ve got going there.

          • vorpal

Bill Perdue: The only leftist in the village.

          • Bill_Perdue

There are dozens of us who comment here. You’re not a leftist. Democrats are rightists.

          • fuow

            Not all of us.
Some of us are pragmatists. I’m Trotsky to your Smith.

          • fuow

Hey, I’m only one tiny half-step to Bill’s right.
And I get shit on by the A-List-Fags around here often enough for saying parents should have the final decision over their children’s warfare, not the state.

          • Octavio

Amazing how much he resembles Rebel Wilson — whom I adore and is Mat Lucas’ “roommate” — uncanny.

          • Bill_Perdue

People who don’t learn from history get to repeat it.

          • fuow

Only the errors, dear, only the errors.

        • Bill_Perdue

No doubt you do forgive him for murdering half a million Iraqi children.

      • MickinDetroit

doma was a pretty odious stain on the clintons and an example of how their Triangulation philosophy functions. Gays could be thrown over as they were a distraction, there was zero chance of constitutional amendment they claim this was in an effort to stop…. and it didn’t exactly stop the state CAs now did it? I’m glad they have both come to repudiate it, but it was about 20 years too late for lots of folks.

        • Reality.Bites

No question of that – but nevertheless, at its worst DOMA only codified the existing discrimination. It did not add to it.

And the Republicans (and many Democrats) wanted much worse.

My point is not to defend DOMA or the Clintons. My point is showcasing Bill Purdue’s lunatic obsession with them and the Democratic Party. Going all Godwin for the moment, if the subject was Nazi atrocities, Purdue would attempt to show how the Clintons were worse.

          • Bill_Perdue

Stop lying. DOMA made bigotry a federal law.

          • Reality Check

Bill Perdue, stuck in the past while we move forward.

          • Bill_Perdue

The movement is moving forward, Democrats are pretending to be on our side which is not progress when compared to Republicans.

“Hillary Clinton evolved on same-sex marriage within the first 72 hours of her presidential run, as her campaign said Wednesday that the former secretary of state now backs marriage equality as a US constitutional right.

The about-face, dropped as Clinton was preparing the second of two progressive-leaning appearances in Iowa, represents a significant – if not completely unexpected – shift from her previous statements that same-sex marriage should be legislated state-by-state rather than on the federal level.”

          • MickinDetroit

I think that “well it only codified bigotry” is the point that tends to raise hackles. Dadt didn’t help. It really didn’t. in fact it made things worse. DOMA, the same. as you say it CODIFIED the bigotry. it was a cop out. and it was a cop out because gay discrimination wasn’t important enough to the Clintons then to risk their presidency on. Which is fine…I’m just withholding any profiles in courage awards and any plaudits for their later day evolution. especially when they try to claim the title of life long progressive on this subject.

          • Ninja0980

One could also point out there was nothing that could have been done to stop it.
Not to mention Joe Biden supported DOMA as well, it’s not like the Clintons are the only one with soiled hands on that.

          • MickinDetroit

never said they were… and bill could have vetoed it. but they didn’t they were triangulating….and that always means some progressive cause gets thrown under the bus. in the 90s it was was teh gays. Remains to be seen who gets it under HRC. I’m betting middle class and retirees this time.

          • Bill_Perdue

Democrats and Republicans voted overwhelmingly for it. But the role of the Clintons was by far the most odious.

224R and 118D respectively in the House and 53R plus 32D in the Senate. The yea votes included Dem Senator Barbara Mikulski who should have known better.

          • Bill_Perdue

Your point is to defend DOMA and the Clintons.

      • Bill_Perdue

Democrats like the Clintons and Obama were bigoted opponents of marriage equality until recently.

Now they’re rebranding but that won’t erase their past except in the case of excuse mongers

        • Reality.Bites

Talk about Republicans. I dare you. For one fucking week, just talk about how terrible Republicans are, you pathetic, psychotic piece of shit.

          • Bill_Perdue

            They’re as bad as Democrats.

        • vorpal

Wow. People change their mind and learn and grow sometimes.
          Who knew?

But I guess instead of encouraging said growth, we should constantly and stubbornly judge them on previous opinions that they held.

That’s the noble and productive thing to do, clearly.
          =rolls eyes=

          • MickinDetroit

i think growth is laudable… however, I tend to go with the guy who said “”In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends”

The clintons went beyond silence into affirmative acts to enshrine bigotry into federal law. and they did it because politically it was expedient for their more important concerns.

          • Bill_Perdue

They didn’t change their minds, they rebranded to fool people and, as we see, it worked on some.

      • fuow

Bill has some valid and sound points about my party.
Look how many A-List-Fags around here aren’t going to vote unless they get ‘their’ candidate?

        • Reality.Bites

How many? I haven’t seen one single regular poster on JMG suggest anything of the sort. I’ve seen a couple of johnny-come-lately single-issue trolls say that, but no one who was here before or who posts on other subjects has said that. (I am of course subject to correction. I don’t keep tabs on what everyone says or how long they’ve been around.)

And at that, how many people here are “A-List Fags” anyway? The general impression I have of the readership are guys 50 and up, most of whom are reasonably comfortable financially, but none in the 1% – or likely even in the 10% or 20%. People who’ve worked all their lives, either for other people, or in a small business. Not in any way the A-List.

          • Bill_Perdue

            Banksters are resentful a listers.

    • Robincho

      You are SO fucking pathetic…

      • Bill_Perdue

By that you mean that I don’t excuse bigotry like you.

        • Reality.Bites

Oh you’ll fall all over yourself to excuse it, or at least ignore it, when it isn’t done by a Democrat.

          • Bill_Perdue

I didn’t excuse the thuggery of Scalia and other Republicans. They’re just as bad as the Clintons, who you fawn over.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Actually, I’m surprised he congratulated a Military couple of all people; especially given his views on people who serve.

            Poor thing.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Yes, poor me, living a happily married life with a wonderful husbotter, a warm home full of love and happiness, friends who live life to the fullest and not in a constant state of hyperactive paranoia and ideological douchebaggery.

Yes, poor me, a man who has all he could ask for and more.

Yes, poor me, a man who worked for close to 40 years so he could retire in contentment and security.

Yes, poor me, a man who has probably done more for the fight for equality than your keyboard warrior ass ever did.

Yes, poor me, that I, in any way, shape or form could consider anything you have to say as being serious or of any value to my life……oh yes, poor, poor me.

You now have my permission to continue your blather, though you should know it’s lunchtime and my husbotter will be in from doing the driveway and I’m preparing a nice spicy chili for such a day as this. Have a wonderful day…..if that’s possible for you. XXOOXX

          • Bill_Perdue

You’re poor because your only solution to any issue is to bomb some more Arabs.

        • vorpal

By that I think he means that we have NEVER seen anything remotely positive, happy, or celebratory come out of you. Not once.

You are stuck in a cycle of bitching and judgment and seem incapable of feeling joy. I feel almost as bad for you as I do for the rest of us who you keep inflicting yourself on.

          • Ninja0980
