Sam Smith- Writing’s On The Wall [AUDIO]

Sam Smith has released his theme song to the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre. Via Vanity Fair:

Smith is the first British male solo artist to sing the Bond theme in 50 years. Tom Jones recorded “Thunderball’s” main track in 1965. “Writing’s on the Wall” was penned by Smith and frequent collaborator Jimmy Napes. “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song,” Smith said in a statement. “I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.” Adele performed the last Bond theme, “Skyfall,” which earned Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globes. “Spectre” hits theaters on Nov. 6.

    • Haha! That’s awesome…what movie is that from?

      • knn03

        I think Sleepy Hallow

  • VodkaAndPolitics

I don’t for the life of me understand why this guy is so popular. If I wanted to hear a grown man whine, I’d call my Ex Boyfriend up.

    • Circ09

I still confuse his singing for Tracy Chapman sometimes only she is more talented.

      • Rene Salinas

I think he’s terribly overrated as well.

    • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

I totally agree. He seems forever pathetic and whiney, and pathetic and whiney doesn’t belong in a Bond theme.

    • Neil

Yes, it makes for such a disappointing Bond title song. I find his overly affected vocal fry singing style hard to listen to.

    • goofy_joe

      That made me snort-laugh.

  • KCMC

OT one of our KC royals got all beary with last p.m.’s win…

  • ChrisInKansas

    Spotify? guh.

    • bkmn

With you. I don’t want to have to sign up for a service to listen to one song.

      • loosevowels

        it’s free

        • bkmn

Free but you give Spotify access to your entire hard drive. That is why I am not on Facebook.

          • Cuberly

OH Gawd I loathe Spotify, that memory hog is an IT nightmare.

How many users install that crap and then wonder why they can’t do much of anything else. ARGH!

          • Circ09

I’ve never had a problem running it. iTunes however will never be on another of my systems again.

          • Cuberly

We have a lot of older slower systems, on them it’s terrible. The Director of IT finally brought the hammer down and banned it from being installed.

          • Circ09

Ah. I’m shocked your company allows those type installations to begin with. Generous company.

          • Cuberly

It’s a media company so a lot users have to keep up with what’s going on. In fact it’s not uncommon to see an editor viewing video etc. that would drive most other companies into an HR frenzy. But if someone has to review or do research we can’t really stop them, it’d impact the business.

          • Circ09

They have a browser version too.

          • Ray Taylor

That’s not how this works with Spotify. They do not access your songs at all. They have copies of almost everything new to listen to or buy.

        • TheManicMechanic

          But you will pay dearly.

      • kashka333

        It’s on YouTube as well

    • Grant

Someone will pirate it onto Youtube by the end of the day.

    • MDB

Exactly. Not the best way to promote a new release. It’s always all about the $$.

    • kcken

It’s all over youtube. Not one of my fav. Sam songs…

  • fuow

    Great song, well performed.
That said, I hate his voice. Always have.

  • Grant

Is it eight minutes of caterwauling about how James Bond doesn’t love him back?

    • ElenorRigby

technically it’s about 5 ½ minutes. otherwise, yeah, kind of.

  • Michael Rush

I’ll just stick with Patti Smith .

  • Oscarlating Wildely

Too pitchy. Too many forced falsetto notes. All together too maudlin.
    Needs more cowbell.

    • Justin

“Needs more cowbell” – I snorted my coffee, thanks.

  • David From Canada

Vanity Fair’s assessment is a tad misleading: Tom Jones, who sang “Thunderball” 50 years ago is from Wales, not a Brit from England. Also, Duran Duran, a male group from England, had a big #1 hit with the James Bond movie, “A View To A Kill”, back in 1985.

    • ElenorRigby

      still my favorite Bond theme,

      • David From Canada

My all time favourite Bond song is, “Goldfinger”, beautifully written and musically recorded, with Shirley Bassey’s big booming voice the icing on the cake

    • Cousin Bleh

You’re wrong on both counts. The British are considered anyone from the United Kingdom, which includes Wales. And the story clearly says solo artist. Duran Duran is a group.

      • Mikey

probably shouldn’t say that too loudly within earshot of a Scotsman or an Irishman.

  • Giant Monster Gamera

I realize that McCartney was in Wings when they did Live and Let Die, but c’mon, who really remembers the rest of the band?

  • Spotify, really? Won’t be listening to that one…

  • KenDC

His is one of the few discs my husband and I both love. It is is constant rotation in the car. I am eagerly awaiting Sam’s next tunes.

  • Michael

Total side note: Did anyone see the rabbi and cantor at the Ground Zero inter-religious service? I just may convert to Judaism. (See attached) #HebrewHotness

    Cantor Azi Schwartz
    Rabbi Joseph Cosgrove

    • Pierre

I saw him and I thought he looked AND sounded great.

  • Aman InAmsterdam

Spotify is great! I have been a member for years. 5 euros a month, no ads, and any possible CD you can think of. Plus, you can discover all sorts of new bands. As far as Sam Smith goes: not my cup of tea.Try Sleaford Mods instead!

  • AW

idolator called this “slow and boring death…” I have to agree. He’s so whiny all the time, though I do like his work with Disclosure usually.

  • ElenorRigby

in the genre of “British gay guy who only came out once his being closeted became a running joke and sings notes that could shatter Joni Mitchell’s ear drums,” he’s a tad less annoying than Mika.

This song is about as forgettable as the Tina Turner and A-Ha ones… they’re fine as Bond Themes, but I doubt many people could sing them back…

    • David From Canada

I liked “Goldeneye” by Tina Turner.

      • ElenorRigby

I have literally never heard anyone ever say that. I’ve heard a lot of people say “Tina Turner did a Bond Theme? Was it Diamonds are Forever?”

        • David From Canada

Shirley Bassey who had a big hit with Goldfinger, also did the Bond song, Diamonds Are Forever. And then Tina Turner did the theme song for Goldeneye in the 1990’s. I like all of them.

          • ElenorRigby

yes, she’s the only person to do two Bond themes. And they’re both glorious.

  • Cousin Bleh

I hate this latter day trend of Bond songs that don’t match the title of the movie. I get why Quantum of Solace was not a song, because ugh, worst Bond title ever. But Spectre would have been a kick-ass song.

    • houstonray

I’ve always been a fan of that too…So many classics, Diamonds are Forever, Goldfinger, etc. Even people who didn’t like Adele’s ballad, was Skyfall (and lets face it that’s a pretty odd word to use in a song, ha). Would love to have heard something with Spectre in it.

Though I will admit I DO like this song…

  • Again, bait and switch. If you want to hear this ‘snippet’ you MUST sign up with Spotify. Spotify will use your personal information to their advantage with directed unwanted spam ads and high (but false) membership numbers. This type of baiting should be outlawed.

    • Cousin Bleh

The irony is strong with this one:

      • Hudson

Where’s the irony? You’re coming off as homophobic. You HAVE to join Spotify. The Chauvet guy conducts same-sex marriages – he’s not forcing you to marry a same-sex partner. Get a life Dweeb.

        • Scott Holcomb

Agreed. @Cousin Bleh is a troll and a homophobic one at that.

          • Cousin Bleh

You’re both idiots. My comment is not about his officiating duties.

If you’re too dumb to see the irony here, I’m certainly not going to point it out for you.

      • Thanks for the advertisement Cousin. I’m a great wedding planner too!

        • Cousin Bleh

No problem. Aren’t you the guy who’s always posting links in the Towleroad comments to underage porn?

          I’m sure you’re a fantastic wedding planner.

  • Harlan92

That was much worse than I expected… And I expected it to be bad.

  • Guillaume Giovanni

Oh Jesus Christ, Gimme a Sia / Adele duet before this!

  • I heard it on the radio this morning, really liked the full orchestration backing, and it was fun reinterpreting it in my own bass in the car. Just went and bought a copy for myself, now that you’ve reminded me.

  • Hudson

Not worth joining Spotify. And you HAVE to join if you want to hear just a little bit of the song. That’s so wrong.

  • TexPlant

bought it! LOVE LOVE LOVE Sam Smith! Always

  • Jackster

over at daily mail they are saying it sounds like michael jackson’s earth song. I haven’t heard the song yet, but I can’t believe he would do it again. He’s already conceded songwriting credit to Tom Petty for “Stay With Me” because of it’s similarities to Petty’s “Won’t back down”.

  • seant426

    Should’ve gotten Lisa Stansfield.

  • goofy_joe

The male Adele strikes again. Sorry, but I just listened to it…and it’s 4min and 39 seconds of the same thing over and over and him jumping into his head voice.

I jumped off the Sam Smith bandwagon a while ago…can you tell?
