New York City Issues Multiple Violations Over Sign At Harlem Hate Church

Via DNA Info:

A city-issued violation could force the controversial Atlah Worldwide Church to take down its controversial sign — which often displays homophobic and racist messages — after multiple failed attempts by critics who tried to pressure the church to put a stop to what they called hate speech. The church on 123rd Street and Lenox Avenue — which is a landmarked building — was hit with five violations Thursday for altering the structure without permits, according to the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Atlah’s infamous sign, which Pastor James David Manning uses to broadcast messages like “Jesus would stone homos,” and “Obama has released the homo demons on the black man,” was installed without the commission’s authorization, spokeswoman Damaris Olivo said. The violations were issued because the sign was erected without approval, not because of the content of the messages it displayed, Olivo said.

Pastor James David “Semen Lattes” Manning has been ordered to appeared for a hearing before the Landmarks Commission on May 4th. Besides the sign, violations were issued for the unpermitted changes of installing a fence on Lenox Avenue and removing a balcony in the church.

PREVIOUSLY ON JMG: In the last few months Manning has declared that Starbucks laces their lattes with “sodomite semen” (which can get women pregnant), that former President George H.W. Bush has had “anal sex with 100 men,” that all gay Americans will “become cannibals” by next year, that Islamists are justified to execute homosexuals, that Justin Bieber is a transgender man, and that Christian preachers should call gay men “faggots” as often as possible. High-profile anti-gay figures regularly appear on Manning’s YouTube show, including Peter LaBarbera.

How long til Manning becomes the martyr du jour?

    • Gustav2

Only if Bill O’Reilly goes back to Silvia’s.

    • barracks9

      How about martyr au jus?

    • David Walker

It could be interesting. I’d be willing to bet that none of the big names will do anything and the locals will take their cue from the big names. They may make a tepid case, but I kind of doubt it. I mean, there is a racial problem, not to mention location, location, location.

    • put him on fox. i bet he wont stick to the teleprompting XD

  • Gest2016

The sad and funny thing is that this “pastor” and what he believes is very close to what mainstream bigots believe; he just has the audacity to say out loud what they think and believe. Proving again that religion is itself a form of mental illness.

  • Ninja0980

I’m sure our state bigot, Jason McGuire will be weighing in soon enough with talks about “religious freedom” and how NY should serve as a warning to other states.
The fact the signs basically calls for us to be put to death will get left out of that press release I’m sure.

    • Gustav2

The church is being persecuted by the city for telling the city the Truth!

    • yup. tho’ incitement to violence is a crime….
their case looks pretty petty though…

  • Rocco Gibraltar

I am sorry, but this evil sign reminds me of one of my favorite images from my childhood. Namely the “Lost in Space” vehicle Jupiter 7. Oh the things I would have done to Major Don West, had I been old enough.

    • Reality.Bites

      Jupiter 2.

      • Rocco Gibraltar

My mistake on name of spacecraft, but not the incredible hotness of being for Major Don West.

      Mark Goddard is his name.

  • TexasBoy

Just change the name from ” ATLAH Church” to “ATLAH Asylum” and bolt the doors once Sunday Services start. Problem solved.

    • aw cmon, i’d attend, if only to walk out on him

  • robirob

The sign and the crackpots it represents are vital for the decision making process of the general public which helps them to decide whether they are on the side of the haters or on the side of the LGBT community.

When you are really sick you want nothing more than to be healthy.

When you are exposed to so much hate you want nothing more than to be at peace (with yourself and others).

When you are exposed to so much stupidity and ignorance you want nothing more than to use all of your common sense and critical thinking to get the hell out of Dodge.

  • Mike__in_Houston

I don’t know why the good pastor would say that about Chimpy. Maybe he read this Tijuana Bible about him and John McCain that was distributed at the 2008 National Democratic Convention and which I only found out about this past weekend (MOST EMPHATICALLY NSFW):

    http://www.ep.tc/mccain-bible/

(If you aren’t of a certain age, you may not know what a Tijuana Bible is–hint: they aren’t from Tijuana and they most definitely aren’t Bibles–or even if you have seen them, you may not know that this was what they were called. In any event, there is a Wikipedia listing for Tijuana Bible, or you can just google it, and there are plenty of books that contain reprints of them which can be found on amazon and other sources. The Bible reproduced here is a reprint from a 1930s Bible with the faces replaced.)

    • Reality.Bites

Would have been much quicker to just quote the 1st line of the Wikipedia entry.

Tijuana bibles (also known as eight-pagers, Tillie-and-Mac books, Jiggs-and-Maggie books, jo-jo books, bluesies, gray-backs, and two-by-fours) were little palm-sized pornographic comic books produced in the United States from the 1920s to the early 1960s. Their popularity peaked during the Great Depression era.

      • LonelyLiberal

So it was like Depression Era Internet.

        • Yes, but without the lesbian scat scene I witnessed that night on Reaganbook.

    • nsfw. the faces too are quite the artwork!
      = :0

  • Reality.Bites

Oh come on. Are we really expected to believe there are 100 men who’d have sex with Bush?

    • Dagoril

It was a dark and stormy night at that box factory.

    • oikos

Only if they were all clones of Lindsay Graham.

      • Ginger Snap

I do declare that Miss Lindsay would fall all over here crinolines to have at Bush.

    • Anonymously? in the dark?
      Drunk, drugged and well paid?
There must be 5 who would!

  • DesertSun59

It’s quite clear that this ‘pastor’ is a deeply disturbed man who has deeply disturbed followers.

  • Steven Leahy

Lol I have moved from being offended by Manning and his videos to being entertained by them more than anything. You should watch them, there have to be hundreds – truly hilarious.

  • dcurlee

Hope the fines put him under and they have to shut the doors

  • Max_1

    Shorter NYC:
You can hate all you want…
… Just make sure the sign it is on is legal.

  • Bill T.

That illegal sign is not Manning’s only erection problem.

  • EdmondWherever

Let him advertise his hate. I don’t want people like this to go into hiding.

  • Davidjs

Cue the cries of religious persecution and infringement of First Amendment rights.

True God-fearing patriotic Christians don’t need to obey any law (be it secular or religious) that hinders or constrains them. /s

  • pj

too bad we arent in a place where he would be written up for some of the stuff he puts on this sign.

  • Bared Bear

a semen latte sure sounds delish about now… i love the cream mustache it leaves behind.

  • Octavio

Finally, someone in city government was smart enough to figure out a way at fighting the non stop bigotry? Sure. It’s a zoning violation — or whatever. Didn’t have the right permits to build the sign? Good. Tear the damn thing down. Hysterical Zoning Boards are good for something.

    • If the right people are in charge he won’t be able to get a sign permit ever, due to complaints and gutter speech which has upset the neighborhood and more

      • Octavio

        My fingers are crossed.

      • as much as that may feel good to fantasize about, i don’t think you really want that in real life. turn it on its head:

a gay club puts up a sign in a neighborhood where zoning enforcement has always been on the lax and slow side. they are part of an effort to revitalize a neighborhood by bringing ‘hip’ new businesses to a dying city block. they put up a flashy sign with “offensive” images of things like rainbows and (clothed) boi toys dancing. the dominant industry in the neighborhood is churches, and they complain to the zoning board.

if the club owner failed to get a permit for the sign, yes. he should pay a fine, take it down, and go on ‘sign probation’ for a few months. but do you really want the zoning people to take away his rights to erect signs forever?

tl;dr: the penalty should fit the crime. offensive signs are not illegal, and zoning infringements are not major crimes. make him pay a steep fine and take the sign down. no new signs for a year.

        • Thanks for commenting! There is much that is reasonable here, really everything except tldr in the body of your comment. Hey, I was reading! 😀 You write: “as much as that may feel good to fantasize about, i don’t think you really want that in real life.” I wasn’t fantasizing, I’m speaking of difficulties he could have. It is difficult to get a sign permit in the town where I live. Many places are like that. Manning has done everything in his power to disturb the peace with his signs which are anti-gay, anti-semitic, anti-muslim, anti-arab, anti-obama, vulgar, threatening and even incite specific crimes of violence [stoning].

Soo, a penalty fitting the crime, sure. But his crimes are greater than the current citations, and I’m pointing out that in a practical sense this could affect his ability to get signage approved. I don’t want to see such a case go to the Supreme Court, but that’s his right. What a fool, putting such _deliberately_ offensive messages on illegal signage. He’ll likely have no trouble raising funds to pay fines, even make a profit on it. His disgust is disgusting. Ugh. I agree it’s a can of worms, and not up to me. I think if you and I had to run a town together, we wouldn’t have much trouble getting along. I too believe that those who oppose me have rights. Namaste with bacon and mushrooms.

    • WildwoodGuy

It isn’t as if this were new. The city filed complaints and error violations over several years and the church has simply ignored them. I don’t understand how that works exactly… but it shouldn’t take ‘years’ to get a code violation dealt with.

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Like Al Capone being arrested and convicted for tax evasion.

  • Kissmagrits

I think we knew there would be a power vacuum left when Fred Phelps “shuffled off his mortal coil” last year, but now Pastor Manning thinks he’s filling Fred’s shoes with his campaign of wackadoodle taunts. Lord have mercy! This is likely to end badly for him and his little Brooklyn flock.

  • Jack

A few years ago, Manning went full metal birther and held a show trial at his church in which he “convicted” Obama (whom he calls a “long-legged mack daddy”) of attending Columbia University, or something like that. Naturally, he was ignored.

  • Talisman

This is what happens when you call attention to yourself. People notice, and not always the ones you want to notice you.

  • Bj Lincoln

He may be required to remove the sign but maybe not. I bet if he pays all the fines and does the paperwork, he will get away with keeping the sign and making more of a fool of himself and his followers.

  • Jack

    Religious freedom defense alert.

  • Ginger Snap

Again this proves that the high and mighty believers in a god are lying, cheating, lawless bigots. If they can lie to make a buck they will.
