Des Moines’ ABC affiliate reports:
An Iowa state senator has filed a resolution to end same-sex marriage. Introduced by Republican Sen. Sandy Salmon on Wednesday, the resolution asks the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn its landmark 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling and “restore the natural definition of marriage, a union of one man and one woman.”
Her resolution argues the Supreme Court’s decision is “at odds with the Constitution of the United States and the principles upon which the United States is established.”
Salmon also claims the ruling was a “novel, flawed interpretation” of the case. She says that the court’s ruling was an “illegitimate overreach,” and wants Iowa to be able to make its own marriage laws.

State Sen. Sandy Salmon [photo] last appeared here in February 2025 for her bill that would make performing drag in view of children a felony.
Salmon first appeared here in 2020 when she authored an ultimately failed bill requiring public school teachers to get parents’ permission before mentioning that then-presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is gay. Salmon homeschools her own children.
You may recall Iowa state Sen. Zach Wahls (tweet below) from his tireless same-sex marriage advocacy over a decade ago as the son of two mothers.
