US Booze Makers Raise Alarm Over EU’s 50% Whiskey Tariff, Trump Today Vows 200% Tariff On All EU Booze

NewsNation reports:

The CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States on Wednesday warned that a European whiskey tariff would be “very, very devastating.”

“We’ve just gotten the news early, early this morning, that the [European Union (EU)] is poised to put a 50 percent tariff on American whiskey. That will be very, very devastating,” Chris Swonger told NewsNation’s Nichole Berlie.

In Swonger’s NewsNation interview, he said, “Our industry appreciates and understands that the president is trying to bring more American manufacturing here in the United States and reduce the trade deficit.”

And now this just in:

Trump took to Truth Social this morning to threaten 200% tariffs on all alcohol from countries that are in the European Union, citing the E.U.’s plan to place a new tariff on U.S. whiskey.

“If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES,” Trump wrote. “This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S.”

He railed against the E.U. in the post, falsely saying that the union was “formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States.”

Just two months ago, Swonger was thrilling to Trump’s return, saying, “We are looking forward to working with the Trump administration.”
