Florida Rep Running For Gaetz’s House Seat Seeks To Win Fans With “Open Carry, Repeal Red Flag Laws” Bill

Florida Politics reports:

Rep. Joel Rudman has filed open carry legislation for consideration by the Florida House. The Navarre Republican put the legislation in the hopper as he runs in a Special Election to succeed former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz in Congress.

“Today, we reaffirm Florida’s commitment to the Constitution, and once again, the Third District leads the way,” Rudman said. “As my first bill for the 2025 session, I have filed a comprehensive piece of legislation that restores and protects our inalienable rights as guaranteed by the Second Amendment.”

The bill (HB 31) would roll back provisions of the Parkland bill signed by former Gov. Rick Scott, now a Republican U.S. Senator. Rudman takes also aim at “red flag” statutory provisions allowing courts to temporarily confiscate guns if individuals demonstrate behavior posing a risk to themselves or others.

Rudman, a medical doctor who had his license challenged for opposing COVID mitigation measures, first appeared here in April 2023 for his bill allowing doctors to refuse to treat LGBTQ patients and others on the grounds of “conscience-based objections.” DeSantis signed his bill into law in May 2023.

He appeared here in December 2023 for his failed bill that would end the three day waiting period to buy handguns.

In February 2024, we heard from Rudman when he introduced a bill that would ban venues from canceling artists over inflammatory posts made on social media.

Rudman has a slim chance of winning Gaetz’s seat as Trump has already endorsed now-former Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis, who resigned his post last week.

After Florida’s special election primary, Rudman’s political career will likely be over, at least for a couple of years.
