US Embassy Ribs Brits Over Tea-Making “Controversy”

Bloomberg News reports:

The US and UK have traditionally enjoyed a so-called special relationship as close allies bound by a common language. But that goodwill has been jeopardized by an American academic who claims that the recipe for a perfect cup of tea includes a pinch of salt.

Her advice drew bafflement and derision in the UK, where tea is considered the national drink. Brits consume 100 million cups daily, which adds up to 36 billion cups a year, according to the UK Tea and Infusions Association.

Politico Europe reports:

Michelle Francl also weighed in on one of the most divisive topics in Britain — whether to put the milk in first or not. She says milk goes in after to reduce the chances of curdling. But some of her other advice was jaw-dropping to Brits: most extraordinary of all, adding a pinch of salt to make the tea taste less bitter.

The comments section on the Daily Mail went into meltdown. “Like we need help from the Americans on making tea. Who do you think you’re talking to, the French?” said one Mail reader. To calm the diplomatic waters, the U.S. embassy in London decided to get involved, putting out a press release.
