Queen Elizabeth’s 70th Jubilee Celebration Kicks Off

The BBC reports:

The Queen stood on the balcony for the flypast – helicopters and planes thundering over Buckingham Palace. It was the cloud-splitting culmination of a morning of precision pageantry. Everything went smoothly, even the weather.

The flying formation picked out the number 70 in the sky, above a cheering crowd. The Queen, who has had a tricky year with health problems, smiled and looked relaxed.

Maybe Prince Charles looked slightly relieved. This balcony scene, with the “working royals” gathered around the Queen, will be one of the defining images of the Jubilee weekend.

The Independent reports:

Protesters were booed by platinum jubilee crowds after attempting to interrupt the Trooping the Colour parade. The demonstrators, from Animal Rebellion, jumped in front of the marching band as it made its way down the Mall on Thursday morning, before police rushed in.

Crowds of people could be heard booing the stunt as they were being hauled away by officers. Animal Rebellion confirmed the reason for the protest, with the group demanding an immediate transition to a plant-based future and rewilding.

The New York Times reports:

In what is almost certain to be the emotional highlight of the festivities, Queen Elizabeth II stepped out onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace on Thursday to inspect the troops marching beneath her.

Though not wholly unexpected, the queen’s appearance will be a source of deep reassurance to the British public, after a long stretch in which illness and mobility issues forced her to cancel multiple public engagements.

She was joined on the balcony by the Duke of Kent, who is familiar to television audiences for his regular appearances at the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
