WHO: Global COVID Cases And Deaths Continue To Rise

New global coronavirus cases grew for the eighth consecutive week, the World Health Organization said late Tuesday. Deaths due to the virus also rose for five weeks straight, the agency said, as outbreaks caused new fatalities from India to Iran to Mexico to Poland.

In India, a pandemic spiral drove the global surge in cases in the week ending April 18. The United States, Brazil, Turkey and France together reported the highest number of new infections, while all regions except for Europe reported an increase in new cases.

Deaths due to covid-19 jumped 8 percent globally, the WHO said, with a 49 percent increase in Southeast Asia, the region in which it places India.
