Democrats Rage After Lindsey Graham Breaks Senate Rules To Ram Through His Anti-Asylum Bill [VIDEO]

Splinter reports:

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Lindsey Graham was a dickhead for no reason today. Graham has successfully evolved from a Bush-era relic who desperately wants war with Iran to a Trump-loving Kavanaugh defender who desperately wants war with Iran.

On Thursday, in one of his final acts before the Senate officially closes for the August recess, the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman decided he just didn’t really even need to let a debate happen before calling a vote on an immigration bill.

McClatchy reports:

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee voted on Lindsey Graham’s controversial asylum legislation — and Democrats revolted.  One by one, the South Carolina Republican chairman’s longtime colleagues and allies on the other side of the aisle took turns eviscerating his leadership.

“This is not the Senate I joined in 1993,” said the committee’s top Democrat, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California. U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont tore up a piece of paper to represent his disgust with the process, accusing Graham of turning the Senate Judiciary Committee into the “Donald Trump Committee.”

U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island read Graham something he, Graham, once said about the importance of pursuing bipartisanship on immigration legislation. “I’d like to see that guy back,” Whitehouse concluded — a nod to accusations that Graham has transformed into a fierce partisan in the Trump era.

Human Rights First reports:

Human Rights First today condemned the Senate Judiciary Committee’s move to vote out of committee the Secure and Protect Act of 2019, a bill that seeks to codify Trump Administration policies undermining the U.S. asylum system.

The bill, introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), would effectively ban refugees from asylum protections and punish those that seek safety in the United States.

Human Rights First strongly opposes the bill as well as Senator Graham’s decision this morning to break Senate and Judiciary Committee rules to force the bill through committee and prevent amendments.

The bill has zero chance of passage in the House, so as noted above, Graham was being a dick for the sake of being one.
