FRC Cheers After Trump Ends HIV Research Contract

Via press release from hate group leader Tony Perkins:

In an HHS announcement that has pro-lifers cheering, Secretary Alex Azar confirmed that the agency was canceling a $2 million-a-year contract with the University of California that had been in place since 2013.

“Promoting the dignity of human life from conception to natural death is one of the very top priorities of President Trump’s administration,” HHS’s statement reiterated. So is funding ethical and effective science, which fetal tissue research is not.

Despite all the money researchers keep throwing at them, the remains of aborted babies haven’t resulted in a single cure. There’s absolutely no reason to finance these ghoulish experiments when moral alternatives exist — and are helping patients!

Biz Journal reports:

UCSF officials said the use of specially designed models that could only use fetal tissue to find a cure for HIV goes back 30 years. The decision is part of an overall move by the Trump Administration to stop all NIH research using tissue from elective abortions and could jeopardize millions of dollars in research funding nationally cutting across a range of diseases.

This effort by the Trump Administration follows a series of highly restrictive anti-abortion laws by several state Legislatures that are designed to pressure the newly right-leaning U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the legendary Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 that legalized abortion.

The Scientist reported in December that researchers in the lab test drugs to treat or prevent HIV using mice that are immunodeficient but implanted with human tissue from the thymus glands of aborted fetuses.

Note that Perkins doesn’t mention that UCSF’s cut off funding was for HIV research.
