Buzzfeed News reports:
On Tuesday, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tweeted out what he claimed was the new normal at Carnaval. In it, a long-haired man is seen teasing his anus with a finger while standing on a bus stop before a fellow partier then pulls out his penis and urinates in the man’s hair.
The scene allegedly shot in São Paulo takes place in the daytime. Witnesses who saw the scene captured in the now infamous video told Brazil’s Folha de São Paulo newspaper that it was an isolated incident.
Though it wasn’t immediately apparent, the message had its origins in Bolsonaro and his supporters’ distaste towards Carnaval, the annual festival marked with huge street parties — most famously in Rio de Janeiro — that’s long been one of the country’s biggest tourist draws.
The Guardian reports:
Revellers across the country used the annual street party as an opportunity to protest against their extremist leader who is notorious for his homophobic and racist remarks, and whose landslide election last year horrified progressive Brazilians. Dissenting partygoers up and down the country have uploaded footage of huge crowds chanting obscenities at Bolsonaro under the hashtag #EiBolsonaroVaiTomarNoCu, which politely translates as #GetScrewedBolsonaro.
Anger, perplexity and a slew of previously inconceivable headlines ensued in some of Brazil’s top news outlets. “Bolsonaro shares video of man fiddling with his anus and suggests it is a common scene during carnival,” wrote the Folha de São Paulo broadsheet. “A porno tweet embarrasses the government,” said a headline in O Globo. The rightwing website O Antagonista was also unimpressed and used a two-word headline to denounce Brazil’s president as “the pornographer”.
The Washington Post reports:
The tweets underscored one of the tactics that helped get Bolsonaro elected: stoking cultural wars. As a congressman for 28 years, Bolsonaro frequently made disparaging comments about gays, women, indigenous groups and blacks.
While such comments always draw sharp criticism, they also garner Bolsonaro attention and feed the leader’s narrative as being somebody unencumbered by questions of political correctness. On Wednesday Bolsonaro posted another tweet that seemed to taunt his critics: “What is a golden shower?” he wrote.
