ILLINOIS: Dem Billionaire Wins Gubernatorial Primary, GOP Incumbent Squeaks By Right Wing Challenger

The Chicago Tribune reports:

Democratic billionaire J.B. Pritzker will take on wealthy Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in November, a race expected to easily shatter Illinois campaign spending records and make a run at the national mark. Both candidates enter a nearly eight-month general election campaign needing to unify their respective parties following bruising primary campaigns. More than half of Democratic voters preferred one of the other five candidates to Pritzker, while Rauner narrowly beat back a strong challenge from conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives.

Rauner and Pritzker also will compete for independent voters, with the suburbs once again expected to be a battleground as they were in 2014. Back then, Rauner narrowly defeated Democrat Pat Quinn. To a large extent, Rauner’s task is the more daunting. It’s difficult for a Republican to win statewide in Democrat-leaning Illinois, and this fall is a midterm election in which Republican President Donald Trump remains deeply unpopular here. In 2014, Rauner spent $65.3 million and defeated Quinn by a scant 4 percentage points.

Ives was the favorite of the Breitbart crowd.

  • DaddyRay

Jeanne Ives is a religious nut bag – I am glad she didn’t win

    • Gustav2

She might have been an easier to beat opponent.

      • DaddyRay

Rauner has been terrible, he will lose in November

        • SkokieGuy- Helen Wheels

I hope you’re right, and there is a lot of (deserved) Rauner hate, but Pritzker has some baggage that will be used relentlessly against him. And the GOP has shown that there are no depths to which they won’t stoop to win.

Do you remember in (2012 maybe?) when Chicago election judges were sent a fake notice requiring them to report for more training on election day, resulting in some (strongly Democratic) polling places opening late? Of course after the election, there was no serious investigation and no one went to jail.

    • Todd E.

I went to high school with her. I’m THRILLED she lost.

      • Thats gonna be an awkward reunion.

        • DaddyRay

Everyone needs to point and laugh at her if she shows up

      • SkokieGuy- Helen Wheels

If she had won, she would have been easier for Pritzker to beat. Now it is a far tougher battle.

        • DaddyRay

There is a reason why he squeezed by in the primary – he is not popular with Republicans

          • SkokieGuy- Helen Wheels

Not popular with Republicans, but how many disappointed Republicans will vote for a Democrat over him? Of course I hope you’re right, but I’m less optimistic than you.

          • toutwest

            Maybe they just stay home.

          • Uncle Mark

Rauner won last time, because a lot of people were frustrated with the two previous Democratic governors we had last time. Many voters switched only because they thought Illinois should try something different. “How bad could a change be?” My own siblings echoed that very sentiment, whereas I pointed out we could go from the frying pan into the fire, which we certainly did. Rauner dug his feet in from the get-go with Madigan and the state has suffered for 4 years as a result with no budget, plummeting credit rating, and schools & social services being knee-capped. Rauner only made minor concessions in an obvious attempt to placate a few on the left & middle, who voted for him in 2014…which only served to piss off those on the right.

You’re right, people on the right are not likely to switch over and vote for a Democrat, but they very well may lose their motivation to go to the polls at all, which is fine by me. After Rauner’s disasterous leadership, those more independent/moderate voters will no-doubt be leaning to remove this obstructing lump of a governor.

          • SkokieGuy- Helen Wheels

Very spot on. I agree its reasonable that some (many?) will stay home.

      • Reality.Bites

So – was she easy back then?

      • Halloween_Jack

Was she just as evil then?

    • Rambie

I wish she had, it would have made the Democrats job easier.

      • Ninja0980

After Trump, no one should ever think that again.

        • Rambie

I agreed with your point because she’d be a perfect candidate for some states but I don’t see her winning Illinois.

  • Illinois is one fucked up state.

    • DaddyRay

Not entirely – we are still considered a Blue state

      • 1) Dan Lipinski

        2) Rahm Emmanuel

        3) Every Governor for the past century or so.

        4) The Daley Family

        5) Jane Byrne

        6) Shitty weather.

        7) Cairo, Illinois.

        8) Ed Vrdolyak

        Need I say more?

        • Reality.Bites

          Barack Obama. Says it all.

          • Him and Lincoln. The only two things Illinois ever got right.

But you really got it right both times.

          • Ninja0980

Illinois wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t gerrymandered.

          • That can be said of the entire country, I think

        • SkokieGuy- Helen Wheels

Deep dish pizza, the lakefront, Obama, Lincoln, John Belushi, Garrett’s Popcorn, Vienna Beef, Mister International Leather and the Brownie.

          • Okay, Belushi and Obama, I’ll give you both of those. Thats undeniable.

The lakefront? Its nice when the weather isn’t shit. I dunno about the popcorn, never tried it. It might be good. Every major city has an IML contest, so its not that special. The brownie? Never heard of it. I’m not much into beef, sorry.

          • SkokieGuy- Helen Wheels

Having a variety of weather = more outfits!
IML was started in Chicago by the late Chuck Renslow, the local contests lead up to the actual event, always held in Chicago. You’ve never heard of a brownie? WTF?

          • Look, I didn’t know if there was some kinda special Chicago Brownie, you know?

Seattle Brownies, for example, tend to be very special

            http://bluenationreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/pot-brownies.jpg

          • SkokieGuy- Helen Wheels

Brownies were invented in Chicago at the request of Bertha Palmer (of the Palmer House – story in the link in previous comment). The movie industry started here too, before Hollywood.

          • Bertha gave palm just for a freaking brownie? Chicago girls are easy, man. The guys are too, but they got a mouthful of herpes.

As far as film industries go, I thought the AVN awards were in Vegas.

          • cleos_mom

And in Colorado, you get a Senior discount.

          • Nice!!!

          • Hank

Most people do not know how relatively “politically” powerful Renslow was and, besides IML what he did for the GLBT community there. (I found him to be an ass personally, but a friend of mine worked for him part-time at the Eagle and at Man’s Country for many Years!)

          • SkokieGuy- Helen Wheels

I have yet to read his biography, but he is on the list. He was very well connected and did a lot for our community.

          • Kruhn

And The Second City Improv, which has brought us greats like Stephen Colbert.

          • Second City was and is awesome, you have the point

          • Hank

The BEST deep dish Pizza I ever had, was a stuffed eggplant pizza from a place on Broadway 3 blocks up from Diversey in Boystown!!! Also, New York Bagels were the best outside of NYC!!
I used to live up the street from Gov. Jim Thompson, when I lived there.

          • Vista-Cruiser

            International Mr. Leather. Yeah baby!

        • licuado de platano

Don’t be talking shit about Jane Byrne.

          • During her administration, people who had never been to Chicago in their lives started getting parking and traffic tickets in the mail. The city needed revenue, so they ran a scam, figuring people in the Region probably have been to Chicago at least once and wouldn’t want to drive all the way back just to fight a parking ticket.

          • SkokieGuy- Helen Wheels

Yes, I’m sure Jane engineered this herself. She also started ChicagoFest which led to the renovation of Navy Pier and morphed into Taste of Chicago.

            Where is it you live?

          • She also fought against Harold Washington- the only decent mayor Chicago has had in a century- during his election campaign, backing Daley of all people

Let’s see what Illinois has to offer:
        – A flat treeless landscape
        – A high murder rate
        – Widespread poverty
        – Billions of dollars in debt
        – Grotesquely fat and ugly people
        – Icy grey winters
        – Summer weather right out of an Amazon jungle – people die every year from the heat and humidity

    • hdtex

      No. It’s not.

      • Yes, yes it is.

The only reason why you don’t think so is because Indiana and Michigan are even worse

    • Rambie

Yes, Illinois has issues but there are plenty of other states that are worse for progressives causes and especially the LGBT.

      • Oh, there’s always going to be worse places. They’re called Louisiana and Mississippi.

That’s setting the bar kinda low, but they both serve one purpose: reassuring everyone else in the country that it could always be worse.

        • Rambie

And sitting there on you high horse is doing exactly what?

          • At the moment? Masturbating.

          • cleos_mom

Just curious here: what’s the opposite of a high horse? A Shetland pony? A miniature horse? An equine that doesn’t smoke weed?

          • Rambie

A masturbatory throne in this case it seems. 😉

  • Boreal

I don’t know anything about this guy but dems need to vote and oust every republican. Purity tests elect trumpanzees.

    • DaddyRay

That comes in November – this was a primary where you have to declare your party at the polling location and when you do you only get to vote for either Democratic or Republican candidates on the ballot they give you

  • safari

I’ll just leave this here since it just popped up and it seems appropriate.

      • Tulle Christensen

That’s why bats are better they can’t poop while flying

    • safari

Btw, what’s a bird that sounds like one’s rubbing a stick against a chalkboard?

    • Bluto
      • safari

My brother got bit by a goose as a small child. My father had to rescue him from the attacking bird.

      • MichaelJ

Question: Aside from avoiding geese altogether, what are you supposed to do if a goose attacks you? Do you fight back? Walk away slowly? From this video it seems like running away, particularly while the goose is approaching only encourages the attack.

    • Reality.Bites

When I was a kid, the way a pigeon’s head goes back and forth while walking used to drive me nuts.

That happened in 1945 at the latest. They had 13 years to get their act together before I came along.

        • Prost Seattle

          Thank you for that!

    • Danieruw

“drumpf suddenly realizes he doesn’t have to CAPS LOCK like an idiot entire time he’s tweeting garbage.” Fixed it.

  • Craig Howell

So why is nobody here talking about the victory of anti-gay Representative Dan Lapinski in the Democratic primary over an opponent heavily backed by progressives? Did I miss something?

  • Kevin Andrews

One more Oligarch to bend government to his profit. Nothing different, no news here.

  • Lakeview Bob

Another benefit of moving to California and leaving Illinois behind was not having to have Rauner as my governor any longer. Useless man.

  • Mickey Bitsko
  • stanhope

I am delighted JB won. His sister is transgender, Colonel Pritzker. His positions are what the state needs. Rauner was like poison in the state. JB can take that a-hole and win.

  • Jay Hansen

Gee, I’m glad I don’t live in Illinois, where it’s looking like a blank-ballot year. Instead, I live in Utah, where it’s looking like a blank-ballot year. Wise up, Democrats.

  • Tempus Fuggit

Oh, whew. I was worried there isn’t enough money in politics.

  • kimmason51

more rich, white people trying to pretend they understand how the other half lives.
