LIVE VIDEO: Rep. Joe Kennedy Delivers SOTU Response

CNN reports:

In his response to the State of the Union address, Rep. Joe Kennedy is set to indirectly refer to President Donald Trump as a “bully,” according to excerpts provided ahead of his speech.

“Bullies may land a punch. They might leave a mark,” the Massachusetts Democrat will say, according to excerpts released by his office. “But they have never, not once, in the history of our United States, managed to match the strength and spirit of a people united in defense of their future.”

Kennedy, who comes from one of the most prominent families in American politics, is also set to slam Trump for “targeting laws” that protect Americans.

“It would be easy to dismiss the past year as chaos. Partisanship. Politics. But it’s far bigger than that,” he will say. “This administration isn’t just targeting the laws that protect us — they are targeting the very idea that we are all worthy of protection.”

I don’t know about that shiny coal. I like mine natural.

    • Galvestonian

Anthracite ( commonly known as ‘clean coal’ ) is a hard, compact variety of coal that has a submetallic luster. It has the highest carbon content, the fewest impurities, and the highest energy density of all types of coal except for graphite and is the highest ranking of coal.

Anthracite is the most metamorphosed type of coal (but still represents low-grade metamorphism), in which the carbon content is between 92% and 98%.The term is applied to those varieties of coal which do not give off tarry or other hydrocarbon vapours when heated below their point of ignition. Anthracite ignites with difficulty and burns with a short, blue, and smokeless flame.

“The American promise is being broken. By an Administration that callously appraises our worthiness and decides who makes the cut and who can be bargained away. They are turning American life into a zero-sum game. Where for one to win, another must lose.”

  • Ninja0980

Memo to Bernie bots, go over to where Trump’s deplorables are already and fuck off.

    • Leo

      Twitter’s a clusterfuck right now

      • Todd20036

        The good kind perhaps?

    • Mike

      What’s a bernie bot?

      • KarenAtFOH

aaaaand my irony meter just broke.

  • Oscarlating Wildely

YES! Spanish! And rousing.Fuck, he’s fine.

  • Lazycrockett

“He’s speaking in tongues he got the devil in him.”

  • He speaks fluent Spanish. I think I just climaxed.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

      Preach, sister.

    • halfwaythere

I was just going to say something similar. Yowza, I’m in love! (and lust)

    • TrollopeReader

and Gerry Studds, back in the day, learned Portuguese for being able to communicate with many in the district ….

  • safari

“You are part of our story. We will fight for you. We will not walk away.” (after the spanish original)

  • houstonray

HE SPEAKS F’ING SPANISH? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? OMG I’m in love!

  • TampaDink

Onion chopping ninjas have invaded my house again.

  • mdub in Puyallup

    Women’s March mention!

  • Ninja0980

Hubby might have to go for round two tonight.
Sexy red head saying stuff that makes sense…ROOOARRRR!

  • medaka

Wait — why is there a car with the hood up behind him?

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

Build a wall, and my generation will tear it down….

  • houstonray

MY GENERATION WILL TEAR IT DOWN!! Holy crap this is amazing.

  • Bluto

I’ll help the next generation tear down any fucking wall.

  • Leo

Do NOT turn to Twitter right now y’all, it’s a hot fucking mess.

Not suggesting staying in bubble but it’s not worth engaging right now.

    • Friday

Yeah, the youtube live comments I noticed at the end was just a scroll of noise, flying snot, and….. Well, what you expect from Youtube commenters only with even less thought. 🙂

  • safari

    This speech is gold.

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

“To all the Dreamers watching tonight, let me be clear: Ustedes son parte de nuestra historia. Vamos a luchar por ustedes y no nos vamos alejar. You are a part of our story. We will fight for you. We will not walk away.”

  • Megrim Twist

Joe’s an indication of the deep bench that will be standing up by the time we get to 2020. KEEP HOPE ALIVE

  • halfwaythere

Wow, I’m going to have to watch this again later. Inspirational!

  • Reiterating what I said downthread and amplifying: Having an audience is GENIUS.

    • fuzzybits

The orange turd will say his applause o meter registered higher.

      • TampaDink

He will always boast about his size. Usually that is the sure sign of a very small person.

    • Megrim Twist

Agree totally, yes. It jumped out at me right away. Very different.

    • Ross

Becca, a great joy seeing you tonight.

      Much love!

      • And to you, too, Ross. Like I said in another comment, I did want to watch the rebuttal and I saw a twitter alert go by, so I figured I’d break my news fast for a little bit just to watch. Needed some hope. I felt like Joe Kennedy delivered.

In a little bit though I’m gonna head back to news downtime because I don’t want to see the media outlets fawning over Hair Pumpkin’s speech for the next days.

        • David Walker

Smart move. I suspect what I saw in Joe that it’s possible that the US does have a future.

  • safari

Donald is overshadowed in my opinion. The crowd and watchers listen, enthralled.

  • Lazycrockett
  • Oscarlating Wildely

Honest question: is there a teleprompter? He barely seemed to use it.

    • safari

      Probably.

    • houstonray

      Yes off to each side.

      • Unlike Donald though, Joe knows how to use ’em just as a memory aid. Cheeto Twittler turns his whole torso like a robot and reads the words woodenly as if seeing them for the 1st time…which he likely is.

        • houstonray

This is true. I watched him and most of the time he was not looking at them, only glancing as a memory aid as you said. Trump stares and one, reads it and turns to the other and reads that one. And back and forth. It’s so annoying.

          • David Walker

As is so much else about him. Everything about him, actually.

  • Leo

    Well THAT was powerful. WOW.

  • Bluto

Could Joe be our version of Justin Trudeau?

    • MBear

      Check his socks

    • Robincho

I say he’s the love-child of Justin Trudeau and Prince Harry. Yum!…

      • anne marie in philly

(swoon) future president perhaps? one can hope…

  • Goddamn.

    • DaddyRay

      Hotdamn
      fixed it for you 🙂

  • mdub in Puyallup

    Short and sweet AND inspiring.

  • Lazycrockett

    Well Done.

  • blackstar

If you are the praying type he needs our prayers.

  • Oscarlating Wildely

    Never. Mentioned. Him.

    Epic shade.

  • TampaDink

I am SO glad that this is the only speech I watched tonight.

    • Same. Saw a tweet notice that he was about to speak, so I tuned in at the last minute. Glad I did. Needed this.

    • johncAtl

Was there another one? I’ve been with my good friend J. Lohr (nickname is Cabernet) all night.

      • TampaDink

I am sure that you & Cab are both feeling toasty.

        • johncAtl

Toasty is a good word. It’s damn cold outside tonight.

But your Rose Kennedy is starting to boil at the lusty thoughts that you’re having about her great-grandson. (If you’re not having those thoughts I am.)

  • Lazycrockett

and Matthews goes straight to selling his book.

    • KarenAtFOH

      fuuuuuuuuuccckkkk

    • Leo

It’s time MSNBC let him go. Honestly.

    • lenvus

Any time he is on I switch the channel. Honestly. Even if he appears with Rachel, or even on Rachel’s show. Nope.

I watched the SOTU on PBS just in case Matthews decided to pop his nasty ol’ head into the SOTU in small side-frame to interject every five seconds.

  • safari

    Wonderful. A real bridging.

    • safari

(As much as there can be.)

  • mdub in Puyallup

And NBC is back! Already saying that the tweets will start soon putting the brakes on any goodwill he got from the SOTU.

  • coram nobis

Let the word go forth that the torch has passed to a new generation.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

A big ol’ hottie ginger torch.

      • TrollopeReader

i do need to skip across town this summer ….

    • Nychta

      It’s about time.

  • Leo
  • mdub in Puyallup

Andrea Mitchell saying Trump will not address the Russia threat. I am in an alternate reality.

  • Friday

There’s a Kennedy-worthy speech. This could be someone we see more of soon.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

I was too young for Camelot. I was born in LBJ’s era. I always wondered what it was like. I wouldn’t mind a Kennedy admin to find out.

      • Lars Littlefield

It was fucking scary and very cool at the same time. The North Korea shit we’re dealing with now is nothing to the real paralytic fear of the USSR hell bent on destroying us in 1962. Unlike Trump,Kennedy didn’t bait the Russians. He respected them and made them understand they had no business using Cuba as a missle base. Tension was felt by everyone, young and old. Kennedy was a charmer and definitely nailed anything in a skirt that moved. Robert Kennedy was the same. But confonting the racist shackles of the slave states and the putting down of race wars was a great thing to be a part of. And gasoline was 21.0 cents a gallon.

        • David Walker

Except they were lower during “gas wars.” And cigarettes? I don’t remember the price, but I do recall that my allowance was able to keep me smoking for far too long.

          • Robincho

I remember when a pack of reds would run you a quarter and a dime. Now it’s a ten-spot…

          • Galvestonian

Cigarettes were 25 cents a pack in 1963. I enlisted in the Navy and you could buy a carton of cigarettes for $1.00 aboard ship

        • johncAtl

I was eight years old in 1962 and lived in walking distance of the beach in North Florida, just a few miles from a major naval base. Every night we could sit on the beach and watch the Navy’s submarine hunters flying right off the coast looking for Soviet ships. I was too young to understand how scary that was.

And yeah, gas was cheap. My dad was filling up a gallon gas can once and he gave me a dollar bill to go pay for it. I asked him if it was enough. His answer was “it damn sure better be.”

          • Lars Littlefield

            LOL

    • Bluto

I hope so. This young man got my attention.
      edit: his WORDS did.

  • Ninja0980

This is the only speech that needed to be heard tonight.

  • GanymedeRenard

Mr. Kennedy, you and I are from the same generation. Why did you choose to obliterate any mention to anything pertaining LGBT issues? Why?

    • Oscarlating Wildely

He did… he mentioned trans inclusion, and who one loves. Pretty clear. Or was that snark?

      • GanymedeRenard

No. I want a SPECIFIC mention to the LBGT community. Euphemisms don’t make sense in these days and age.

        • blackstar

          lol

          • GanymedeRenard

            ??

        • Oscarlating Wildely

They are targeting the very idea that we are all equal, attacking the gender of your spouse -9:25; the belief that we are all worthy, that we are all equal, that we all count (that’s pretty much Harvey Milk ‘s speech straight up), the parent who lies awake terrified that their transgender son or daughter will be beaten or bullied at school -7:08– even Obama didn’t mention that much transinclusion in his first speeches.

I’d take it, especially compared to that thing that Trump offered.

          • GanymedeRenard

            Of course, I understand that!

“No matter who votes” – said in the 1920s.
“No matter who goes to school” – said in the 1970s.
“No matter whom you marry” – said in 2017??

            Really?

        • Tread

          Stop, please.

          • GanymedeRenard

            Why?

    • medaka

He slipped it into that long “it shouldn’t matter/we shouldn’t be judged by” list, something like “the sex of your spouse.”

      • GanymedeRenard

It would be interpreted both ways.

    • This is simply not true.

      • GanymedeRenard

        Why so?

        • Marriage equality. Trans rights.

Yet your absolutist position is he said nothing about LGBT issues. I strongly suspect there is nothing that would pass your purity test.

          • GanymedeRenard

            Quite the opposite, ma’am.

          • Then why did you say ‘obliterate any mention’ when that was not the case at all?

          • GanymedeRenard

Because he did not specifically say so. Why did he speak a sentence speak a full phrase in Spanish when he knows not all Dreamers are from a Hispanic heritage?

          • TampaDink

Why in the hell didn’t he speak at least one sentence in every language? /sarcasm.

          • GanymedeRenard

Because, gee, sexual orientation isn’t as important as other protected characteristics in a democracy such as the U.S.’? / s

          • TampaDink

I give up. He should have skipped everything else & only spoken about our community.

          • GanymedeRenard

In that case, he should have only spoken about white, straight, male, Christian voters. He ended his speech mentioning “God”. Atheists have no place in his idea of the USA, apparently.

          • Tread

            You’re embarrassing yourself. Just stop.

          • GanymedeRenard

No, I’m not and I won’t, thank you.

          • Tread

General consensus is you’re being a dumbass and willfully obtuse.

          • GanymedeRenard

Fantastic! Then just block me, big deal! I don’t express my opinions based on what the majority THINKS – that’s what politicians do, thank you very much.

          • Tread

Meh. You’re not worth the effort.

          • GanymedeRenard

            Likewise, hun.

          • GanymedeRenard

Then you shouldn’t have made the effort to answer.

          • GanymedeRenard

P.S. General consensus being eight to ten people out of a blog liked by 30,000+? Get a grip.

          • Tread

I have one. You’re the one claiming he “obliterated” the LGBT community, whatever that means. Get a fucking clue.

          • GanymedeRenard

More than perfect! Let the people do whatever they want!

          • GanymedeRenard

BTW, here’s a definition in case you didn’t get a fucking clue:

“Obliterate: cause to become invisible or indistinct; blot out.”

          • Tread

            Still an idiot.

          • GanymedeRenard

            Fuck off and bye.

          • GanymedeRenard

P.S. I retire from here without having called you any names. You, on the other hand… The class.

          • Tread

            Eh, don’t care. You’re an empty-headed moron.

          • GanymedeRenard

            Lovely. Anything else?

          • Tread’s right, you seem to be being willfully oppositional and obtuse so I’m gonna make use of the Hush function because you are literally making no sense.

          • GanymedeRenard

Thank you very much, I won’t be needing your monitoring either. Bye.

    • KarenAtFOH

The ship of state is burning to the waterline. I wouldn’t be worried about a drip in the bilge.

      • GanymedeRenard

        I would.

    • TampaDink

      “…the gender of your spouse….”
Sure, I suppose he could have said the gender of your gay, homosexual, bisexual, lesbian and or transgender spouse….but there’d still be people whining that he left out the word intersexed.

      • GanymedeRenard

Intersex people are still being studied! They’ve long been part of the LGBTQ+ community. But really, deliberately obliterating gay, lesbian, trans folks in 2017?

        • TampaDink

We obviously heard a different speech.

          • GanymedeRenard

            I realize that.

        • Oscarlating Wildely

But really, deliberately obliterating gay, lesbian, trans folks in 2017?

You know that you forgot bi in there, right?

          • As usual, we are invisible among the militant types.

          • TampaDink

He also forgot that it is 2018.

          • GanymedeRenard

Point taken. I’m obliterating the bi component in our community. My apologies also for intersex, and queer and our ever growing community. No snark here.

  • When is Maxine Waters speech? I need her right now.

  • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

Passionate, genuine and inclusive : That’s America. Not Trump’s poisonous vision. Well done, Joe Kennedy III.

    • safari

I won’t go so far as genuine, but passionate and inclusive definately.

I don’t doubt the rhetoric, I just worry about the implmentation.

      • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

We agree on two out of three. Not so bad.

  • Lazycrockett

    Kamala!!!

  • blackstar
  • Leo

Amazing speech but debates will be bruising and the family would be put through hell all over again if he decided to run. I don’t think he has a 2020 run in him.

Still too much of the Bernie cult will throw tantrums regardless of him running again or not too.

    • Blake J Butler

Still though, fuck them and their feelings.

They can take their red roses of the DSA and shove them up their bungholes.

    • Lazycrockett

The Bros are going to whine no matter who else runs. Let them cry into their pillow till they pass out. No Bernie Ever.

Jesus. He’s a year older than me. Let me be your Chief of Staff, Joe!

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Oh the Bernie cult! Seriously, that shit has to end!

    • Lars Littlefield

Maybe we can get Sea Biscuit or Secretariat to run.

  • DaddyRay

    Following Harvey Milk’s advice:
    You Gotta Give Them Hope

    • safari

But Nancy says to shut up.

      • Bluto

        Nancy needs to go.

        • Guy z

Why? She is imperfect, but she fights (and wins) like hell. After the last election, let us play shitty hands with pride instead of searching for perfection.

        • Oscarlating Wildely

I have issues with her. But appreciate her strategy and knowledge. I also think that yea, with a young faces like his, I can deal.

      • Guy z

Sounds like she is refusing to give fox news ammunition. I’d say that’s smart. Believe it or not, in order to win, the democrats need to peel off some folks who might like Trump. They won’t do that by yelling “you lie” during his state of the union.

        • Acronym Jim

The few minutes I saw while searching for something else to watch On Demand showed a lot of people saying “you lie” with their facial expressions alone.

By the way, I found a fantastic show on DIY called “Restored.” The host actually restores historic homes rather than just keeping a few distinctive elements and then blowing out all the walls.

          And Brett Waterman is HAWT.

          https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C3nvdqKVMAAnzTt.jpg

          • Guy z

Lmao (no, really)… You just made my morning. In bed because I was a bit too zealous at the gym yesterday. I laughed so hard, I forgot the pain! Thanks…xx

    • Bluto

this. we need hope so much right now.

  • Leo

“I found the truth lacking in many respects of this State of the Union”

  • Taylor

I liked the content of Kennedy’s speech but hated the delivery. His cadence was so stilted and unnatural. Breaking up his sentences with all those pauses, became a distraction for me.

Plus the lip gloss in the corners of his mouth, was not a good look.

    • Leo

THANK YOU for pointing out the lip gloss. I was cringing the whole time from that. Vapid but you know I wasn’t the only one that noticed.

      • safari

Let it be. 50+% wear lip gloss.

        • Lazycrockett

Don’t leave home without it . Chap Stick classic original.

      • Looked like badly applied chapstick to me.

        • Friday

It’s actually been a harsh winter in New England.

    • Lazycrockett

Gingers tend to have very sensitive skin that doesn’t fair well in the elements.

  • Leo
    • but he doesn’t quite have barack’s deep, authoritative voice. i’d still vote for him, though.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Yep. The cadence was damned close. He hit a strident voice when he over stressed words. Have to stop that and vary rate at times. Oh, and if he clears his throat and hocks a loogie and sings “Sweet Child of Mine” to it his speech would still be better than Trump’s speech.

  • JWC

An extremely refreshing speech from Joe Kennedy III A man worth watching

    • Robincho

A man worth staring at and drooling slightly…

      • Galvestonian

I’ll bet he’s hairy – a ginger with body hair and with an athletic bod. Oh my, yes.

  • Leo

FALSE CHOICE WE CAN DO BOTH! – Same talking point as Kennedy from Kamala. Thank you to whoever behind the scenes planned that.

  • safari

I hope Kennedy is featured above Donald’s obvious-spittle.

    • Friday

He got about five seconds on local ABC broadcast.

  • Leo

3rd longest SOTU ever. Now official apparently.

    • MBear

An obvious shriek of, “please like me”

      • Tread

        Donald Trump’s “Please clap.”

      • DaddyRay

The bullies are just loud so it makes people think there are more of them.

    • Moebym of the Returners

Reminds me very much of how Obama speaks. Not a bad thing, if you ask me.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

His cadence is not typical NE. It’s closer to Midwest. And yes, that rate works. If he went as fast as the cities here speak: he’d lose the middle in a heartbeat. Hell, we lose ourselves.

  • blackstar
  • Lazycrockett

      • billbear1961

Desperate for every ray of HOPE!

        • Friday

          I’ll take it. 🙂

      • coram nobis

He seemed emotional, and not acting. If he wrote the speech, it also shows craft.

  • Leo

Kamala has now hopped over to CNN! Holy shit! Ok, this is transparent.

Look I don’t think she has 2020 in her.

    • Lars Littlefield

      Because she’s on CNN?

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Agreed. Her or Gilibrand. Not yet. Booker’s way on fire– perhaps too much, but he’s got fire.

      • Ninja0980

Gilibrand got grilled by both Joy Behar and Megan McCain and failed badly with both.
She isn’t ready for 2020 and don’t even get me started on Andrew Cuomo…

        • Oscarlating Wildely

Oh, oh no. No, none of that. No Cuomo. On so many levels. No.

    • coram nobis

And she’s got a new contender, one with red hair and a name.

It doesn’t bother me that Kennedy is rich. I like him. I just hated his speech tonight and the way he delivered it. It was a little too all about launching him.

      • Lars Littlefield

Watch it again and count how many times he uses the words me, myself and I. He doesn’t. Not even once.

Then compare that score with the first ten minutes of Trump’s blather.

  • Bubo Sibiricus

Joe, Kennedy’s, SOU speech, was a, parody, of, William, Shatner.

      The importance of immigration
      Quoted the Founders principles
      Actually got the motto right
      LGBTQ inclusion, specially trans inclusion
      Importance of all religions
      Struck down false dichotomies
      Questioned Trump’s principles and logic
Brought Russia out into the light straight away
Got a great slogan out of it
      Attacked bully politics
      Attacked Trump’s crowdsize concerns
      Attacked celebrity focus
      Praised desent
      Praised the women’s march
Got a whole bunch of cities in swing states in there
And he fucking spoke fluent Spanish, with English translations *after* it.

      I wouldn’t call it vacuous.

In PBS’ case it’s a matter of an as-yet unpassed budget. Purge commercial during the SOTU

    https://youtu.be/gYYMnkoFtjM

    • That is in incredibly appalling bad taste.

      • The film, that is. And the timing of the commercial.

        • Bryan

It’s horrifying how close the timeline synced up with the movie series…. I wonder if the trumpers realize being a purger isn’t considered a compliment

          • Rick: So— (brrraaaap) I see Earth in dimension J-19-Zeta-7 decided to become a Purge planet.

Morty: I don’t think that’s entirely accurate. So far it’s the United States, not the whole world. And they haven’t actually had a Purge. They just seem to be heading that way.

Rick: Don’t be such a pedantic little prick, Morty. I’ve seen (buuuurp) hundreds of Purge planets. I know how they start. This is it.

            Morty: (sulking)

          • Bryan

I had that exact episode in mind when writing my comment. Never got to watch it all the way thru but I’ve seen all……uh….what are they running now, 24 minutes? 24 minutes of it.

I just seem to remember in movie 1 they said the New Founding Fathers take over in 2016 or 2019, approximately. And at the end of the 3rd movie (whose reality I’d rather live in at this point) their 4th movie was always planned to be an Origins-type that explained how the Purge became a thing.

Trump winning just happened to coincide with the timeline…and their criticism of how it’d be used in class warfare against anybody not rich, white and christian.

In other words, either Rick needs to move his drunk ass, or Morty needs to move his sulking ass, the eff over so I’s can sit down. I don’t want to live on this planet anymore. Take me to a better iteration of this timeline.

          • Oscarlating Wildely

Um, no certain of it. I have had that exact discussion. “Man is born an animal! It would help us survive! Purge would get rid of the chaff!” I wish I was kidding.

          • Bryan

Speaking in purely utilitarian terms. Meat people like veal and assorted because the animal just kinda used to be forced to sloth around and not get much movement, because muscle was bad for the flavor or whatthefuckever? There’s one group of people who unequivocally have had the stress-free, muscle-free life which would qualify them to have veal-level meat. The wealthy. My fellow ladies and gentlemen…

….We must eat the rich. This is the most obvious solution to the problem.

For now, here’s a really bad shot of the boards and lights; two white/gold, one white/green. I already finished the white/blue and posted it earlier. The red reflection is off a wrapped toroid; I’ll glue it down when I put these in their jars.

Is this something I should be doing to prepare for the Trump Apocalypse? Or should I just keep trying to figure out where I need to be standing when the first missile strikes?

      • Treant

The latter. In the case of ground detonations, the EMP won’t be bad and won’t take out electronics like this (they’re heavily overengineered and pretty simple).

          • Oscarlating Wildely

Good point. He had supposedly a light red to it from a grandparent’s line. Even some noted his skin looked slightly red. After he applied lye, it made his hair straight and shiny. I don’t know if the lye made it seem *more* red or just less black. Bit of both, I would think.

          • the old school lye didn’t change your hair color. it does burn like hell. but my Brother was a natural red, a result of his light skinned mother, who was a product of many generations of white men raping black women. i too have reddish hair, as did my grandmother. the whyte people on our side of the family were not rapists, but Irish. who hooked up with my various ancestors because also poor and not considered “white” at that time in america.

I’d rather come to Bumfuck Texas with a bottle of bourbon and get drunk with you and your hubby.

Kidding about Bumfuck. I changed jobs in September and have considered moving to Austin. I love the city. And my best friend lives there. I’m just not sure I can deal with living in Texas.

          • austin is pretty much the only place in texass that is bearable. and i still won’t move back there. what i really hated about it is the weather. those summer days when it is so hot you literally can’t be outdoors longer than it takes to pee the dog… fuck that shit. i suppose most of the south is like that now, but i’m telling you, it’s only going to get worse. plus, the water in texass? ick. just yuck. i grew up in the great lakes region where the water is relatively pure and clean. the shit that comes out of the faucet in texass is gross and orange. i spent so much on bottled water when i lived there. also: gunz. everybody has at least five down there, and they love using them.

        tax evasion!

Interesting fact — Capone’s car became the Presidential Limousine for for FDR. The government wanted to save money, and his was well armored to withstand gunshots. I just read this in Blanche Wiesen Cook’s latest Eleanor Roosevelt bio volume. This way, it was free!

I see a fascist troll on Political Wire mocking Kennedy as a “drooler.” That’s how the right’s going to try to undercut his excellent speech.

The superlative Politico, shining exemplar of journalistic integrity, is doing what it can to help them out:

“Was that drool coming out of Joe Kennedy’s mouth?”

I hope you’re right. We’ll see what happens.

EDIT: Even if we get the House back, and, by some miracle, the Senate with it, as long as this country continues to recognize the authority of a profoundly corrupt neo-fascist party, the danger will remain.

You post about a wide variety of subjects, political and non-political. You talk about your life – I know more about your life than a lot of people I know in real life.

Trolls do none of these things. They have a pet issue or collection of issues, but there’s never the story of how they came to their beliefs or an attempt to really engage people.

Sometimes I like you. Sometimes I don’t. Depends on the kind of day you’re having, the kind of day I’m having, and of course what the subject you’re writing about.

i am going to start getting really Angry with you “Bernie Bro” haters. a) i am not a man 2) most of us are ready for a new candidate, who supported him back in the day iii) do you even realize, how much you are being manipulated, to direct your anger and effort at “Bernie” people, instead of the ones really responsible for this mess? those being the Russians, and non-voters? you’re like sheep, mewling on and on about a guy who has, and had, almost no impact on the reality of american politics. except to distract HRC supporters from the real issue, which is corruption that Bernie did not cause.

i will give you Stein. she sucks utterly, and i didn’t know that until after it was all done. but i smell so much Russian in all this Bernie hate. it wasn’t about him; it was about the idea that universal health care was possible. at least for me.

        • Reality.Bites

          You’re not a Bernie Bro.

A Bernie Bro is someone who would never, under any circumstances, vote for a Democratic candidate. Like “Lawrerence.” Not you.

They are, by definition, outside of the political process, like Stein supporters. Any effort spent on them is wasted. Their votes are simply not available to Democratic candidates.

And I am fucking PROUD to hate racist, misogynist, homophobic Bernie Bros. They are scum and no better than Republicans.

  • Dunkerblinker

I didn’t know Kennedys came in Ginger?

  • The idea that a Kennedy princeling is who people want to see rebutting Trump is another sign of the illness at the heart of the DNC. Who’s the least black, least gay, least female, least working-class person we can find?

    • Dazzer

I see what you mean. But I think the DNC had a variety of objectives in using him.
      i) They know that the name ‘Kennedy’ scares Trump.
ii) Using a Kennedy is guaranteed to garner headlines/coverage that someone else might not. They wanted to make sure that their rebuttal of SOTU attracted notice.
iii) They wanted to remind older voters that they were the party of Camelot and supposed ‘good times’ whereas Trump is representative of uncertain times
iv) They wanted someone young and good looking to make sure Trump looked old and ugly in comparison.

I thought it was a clever move on the part of the DNC. They used Joe Kennedy as a PR tool against Trump. Time will tell whether they were successful.

I don’t know if this represents the DNC anointing another Kennedy for a power run, but as a short-term response to Trump, I think it worked well.

I listened to some of the Trump/turd speech this morning.
    I can’t take much of it .

But words like ” with hard work you can achieve anything, you can do anything, you can be anything…….in this great country.”

This is juvenile clap-trap,; it is meaningless cheer-leading and it is the most meaningless drivel that one could compose. It is also wrong bu llshit.
In no other country, from no other politician, could such light weight nonsense be spoken.
Why oh why , year after year, does the USA listen to these meaningless platitudes.
Most politicians address issues, most politicians make proposals, they talk about options for solving problems or current topics that need solutions.
But Trump/turd drones on as if he is at an elementary school away-day…..
    “you are all great……..
this is the best country in the world……
You can be anything you choose to be…..
Let’s put our divisions behind us……..”

    This is utter shite.
Go tell that to Puerto Rico, still with substantial power outages, and whose citizens are treated as second class Americans go tell it to the kids who are scared of being picked up by the fascist ICE, go tell that to the many Americans I have spoken to who are crippled by the outrageous costs of health care.

Trump/turd is a childish tantrum prone idiot, he is not fluent in the English language, he is unable to empathize, he is wooden in delivery of his baby words, .
It is utterly embarrassing to listen to this slurry from a supposed grown man.

    • Reality.Bites

Trump took an inheritance and with hard work made it worth less than if he’d just left it alone.

this country is rapidly changing, in terms of demographics. and the forces of evil are working overtime, to keep most of us from being part of the political process. thought experiment: what if the SOTU was attended by 88% Blah and Hispanic women, 25% of which were queer, and half of whom had received some sort of govt assistance over the course of their lives? what would that look like to you, how would you perceive it, white man? this is what people like me deal with, every day we look at and read the news.

Speaking of lies, try this one on for size. THIS IS SOMETHING YOU ALL NEED TO BE AWARE OF AND TAKE ACTION ON TO PREVENT HAVING TO PAY A TAX BILL NEXT YEAR. I have not seen this in the news and NO it’s not a conspiracy theory.

Has anyone started to notice a little bit more in their paychecks lately? My hubby did and being the accoutant that he is he was curious. The reason his check increased is that the IRS, under Rethuglican control, cut witholding taxes in about half. So if in 2017 you were having $100 withheld for federal taxes, this year you will only have around $60 withheld. What does that mean for you? Nothing good! When tax season comes around in 2019 the IRS is going to be wanting that $40 you didn’t pay out of each paycheck.

What does that mean for your employer? They are going to have a bigger tax bill as well. Your employer matches your tax withholdings too. So at the end of the year if not enough was withheld they have to pay too.

The Rethuglicans want everyone to think businesses are getting this big tax break so their employer is sharing the “extra” money in employee’s paychecks, are there any elections coming up this year?!? It’s not true and no one will realize it until after the mid-term elections are done and the IRS is wanting their money.

Please everyone check with your accountant. If you don’t have one get one, it will be worth the money spent. By accountant I don’t mean that guy at WalMart who does your taxes, I mean someone that actually has an accounting degree. The guy at WalMart took a class on how to use their software and has no clue WTF they are doing. Make sure your withholdings are going to be sufficient to pay your actual tax bill. Just because your employer witholds money doesn’t mean it’s enough. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure your withholdings are correct. Your employer can only withhold what you tell them to.

    • J Ascher

Sounds like a sneaky version of what 43 did with advance refund checks for the 2003 tax cuts. Taxpayers had to repay that advance.

    • Pip

You’re correct! I actually saw this on one of the MSM sites a little before the end of last year. You must correct your own taxes at this time since they implemented the tax scam prior to having everything in place for it. Just more proof that this admin is a huge carnival show.

  • Terry

Kennedy’s SOTU rebuttal was a feel good kind of speech but I think most people saw through it. It’s bad, but it’s also void of meaningful policy
