Christian Group Goes Viral With Ex-Gay Video

A Christian “media ministry” called Anchored North went wildly viral over the holiday weekend with an ex-gay video that has racked up 1.3 million views at this writing. Hemant Mehta reports at the Friendly Atheist:

Last year, Emily Thomes opened up about how she had come to Jesus after a life of “homosexual practice and drug use.” Her past involved just about every lesbian stereotype you can imagine (plaid shirts, short hair, etc). We wrote about her at the time because of a particularly egregious line in her essay, in which she claimed her younger self had “used men’s bathrooms and dressing rooms.”

Her awareness of LGBTQ issues was only part of what made her essay — and the evangelical notion that you can change your sexual orientation — so dangerous. She was saying that other LGBTQ people could follow her lead and become straight, cisgender Jesus-lovers. That meant there was something wrong with them, and also that they had the choice to change. She was wrong on both counts. It was just a giant mashup of ignorance, homophobia, and Christianity.

And now she’s back with the video below. But as Hemant notes, many of the top comments on Facebook are very critical.

  • Boreal

Plaid shirts, short hair? Sweet FSM, I’m a lesbian and with the temp -22F when i woke up, I’m not giving up the at plaid flannel anytime soon.

    • this whole time I thought you were a male. Not that it matters, i just (wrongly) assumed.

    • Philly Mike

Plaid flannel is the Flying Spaghetti Monster’s gift to humanity, one should never deny such a miracle.

    • Joseph Miceli

      Today….we are ALL Lesbians.

      • BlueberriesForMe

Every day, actually. Even if you don’t own a Subaru.

        • Joseph Miceli

      • perversatile

I once had a plaid herculon couch and a home garden.
        Does that count?

    • Rambie

I missed the bullet today with my heavy denim shirt for the -15F (-30 wind chill) winter day.

      • Boreal

Brrrr. Heavy duty Patagonia flannel for me today. Still about -12F here.

        • Rambie

          Stay warm my wolfie friend

          • Boreal

            Thanks, you too!

    • Acronym Jim

I’m so confused, I knew I was gay but I had no idea I was a lesbian.

      • Boreal
      • Sean Taylor

this confirms I am not the least bit confused. thanks

      • Todd20036

I wouldn’t be caught dead dressed like that outside… today.
        It’s 15 degrees out.
        He’s gorgeous though

    • Todd20036

Not to mention the “drug use”. Sorry, but most of the people I know who are into drugs, are into it for the effects, not because they are unhappy with their orientation.

In fact, there are many more straight drug users. I don’t think they use because they are unhappy with being straight.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

Well now you just screwed up the xtian’s whole hate fantasy.
I guess they will have to start all over now.

  • Frostbite

That’s nice, if you’re finally happy with your life, so be it. But don’t try and force your bullshit down anyone else. Thanks.

    • ted-

Same with religion, and anti abortion.

    • Chris Baker

Right. Everyone is different. To say, “I used to do ‘A’ but I decided to change and so can you” is wrong. Some people can quit smoking easily, for example, and others struggle with it for years. Some people can lose weight easily, others gain weight just by flipping through a cookbook.

And “changing” from gay to straight can only be “proven” at the end of one’s life. Look at the other ex-gay examples and most of them have ‘failed’ after a few years. Look at Dr. George Rekers–one of the top ex-gay proponents. He couldn’t even cure himself. Back when i was struggling with my gayness, the poster boy was John Paulk. We know what became of him.

Just like smoking, whether or not you have permanently quit can only be determined at the end of your life.

      • Priya Lynn

One may be able to permanently quit having same sex sex but one can’t quite having same sex attractions.

    • Uncle Mark

Except this doesn’t seem likely to be a real person, but an ignorant amalgam of what Christians think struggling lesbians are like…while taking a swipe a transsexuals and atheists.

Here is an old classic from The Onion regarding this Christianista conversion BS

      • She is actually real. She attends a Reformed Baptist church in Texas:

  • SoCalVet

She’s desperate for attention for her fucked up life.

  • safari

She should hook up with Milo

    • Philly Mike

I don’t wish that mess on anyone.

      • -M-

        Either of them.

    • Joseph Miceli

What a FUN couple! I mean, I wouldn’t receive them, but I’m sure that a certain element would.

  • Boy Elvis

The only problem here, christers, is this: your god isn’t real. Never has been. So what he thinks isn’t really all that important.

  • Rex

Good Luck, Emily, you’re gonna need it.

  • Why would she use men’s bathrooms and changing rooms when she was a lesbian? Lesbians are still women and she says nothing to indicate she was trans. Doesn’t give her story a lot of veracity when she doesn’t even appear to realize that.

    • William

That most bull-dykeist lsebians I’ve known still used the Women’s restroom.

      • clay

There was a lesbian I used to swim with. She used the men’s locker-room one morning, but that was only because the women’s door was still locked.

        • greenmanTN

Aha! The proof we were missing! 🙄

        • Davester

she didn’t just drill out the lock with the rechargeable drill and titanium bits she keeps in her glove box?

    • Acronym Jim

Yes, it is definitely ignorance showing in trying to shoehorn their stereotype of gay women with their stereotype of trans men, or trans anyone really.

    • Andymac3

This video wreaks of falsehood, ‘what straight people think gay people are like’. There is nothing authentic about her comments.

    • Gustav2

Because that meme is what the Christianist Right uses to scare themselves.

      • John Masters

Exactly. The blowback when nakedly going after gay and lesbians has gotten too hot for them, which is precisely why they switched focus to transgender issues, and then try to dog-whistle those back to being gay and lesbian.

        • Chris Baker

Uh oh. People are starting to like the gays. Let’s start bringing up people in the “wrong” restrooms. That’ll scare them.

    • Chris Baker

I suppose if the lines to the women’s room are long, and you look boy-ish, why not choose the men’s room?

      That’s sarcasm, of course.

I don’t think anyone really fears women using the men’s restroom, right? Their narrative does not make sense. It’s male predators sneaking in to molest women! Keep your story straight! I am gay as gay can be and I have never wanted to go into the women’s rest room. (I did, once, by accident, when I started at a new school in the 4th grade. Perhaps that’s what made me gay?)

And, of course, they have to throw in the part about drug use. Cause all gays are sad, depressed, suicidal, cross-dressing, ex-sex workers who need drugs to ease their inner pain. I have never used drugs. I smoked a cigar once (or attempted to) but that’s my drug use history, if you can call it that. (I was once prescribed amphetamines for depression, but I could not sense that they did anything.)

All this happened AFTER I spent the first 25 years of my life as a good, obedient, Christian. Sheltered, shy, no sex, never molested, no drugs, no exposure to any gay people. Where’s my YouTube video saying how I was a good Christian and prayed and prayed to be ‘cured’ of the gay thoughts and desires, but they never went away?

      • jeffg166

More than once in a men’s bathroom at a rock concert women who got tired of waiting for the woman’s bathroom came into the men’s bathroom. Very few men use the toilet. The woman could walking and walk out. I always thought those woman were smart to do it. None of men cared. I use the women bathroom in gay bars. No wait there either.

        • witch

Been there, done that with a group of gals

        • Todd Allis

There were plenty of women in the men’s room I used after SF Pride last year. No one seemed alarmed.

      • clay

I’ve twice gone into the women’s bathroom, but that’s because I have very limited peripheral vision and the word WOMEN was so big I only saw the last three letters. They universal signs at eye-level work better for me.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Quite a few commenters at Friendly Atheist also think the story reeked of falsehood. It seems to be a two-fer type story where it’s attacking two groups at the same time.

      • Three. Gays, Trans and Atheists.

Gee, almost like it was designed to do so…. 🤔

        • Acronym Jim

“Intelligent” Design fail. As usual, their “evidence’ is ginned-up and ignores reality.

        • glass

The “holy trinity” that all their hate is based on.

        • clay

The must have listened to the Grand Mufti in Egypt– atheism causes homosexuality and gender “confusion”.

    • olandp

Most of the straight women I know have used the men’s room at least once. Ask any woman, they get frustrated standing in line at the women’s room, or have to go so badly, that they go into the men’s room.

      • Yes, but that’s not what she asserts. She says that used the men’s room because she was a lesbian, offered it up with the plaids and short hair as “proof” of her lesbianism.

        • liondon#iamnotatraitor

Did she make her own yogurt and roll her own tampons too?

          • Dude_No_Edge

Listen, we all know that you aren’t REALLY a lesbian unless you have at least one cat (though the lesbian agenda strongly recommends you to have multiple felines to ensure your lesbian card isn’t called into question).

    • Todd20036

That’s like saying if you are gay you want to use the women’s washrooms.
And I don’t know too many gay men who want to do that.

      • liondon#iamnotatraitor

        We might see “something”.

    • vorpal

This video is clearly fake: it affirms exactly what Christians want to believe about gay people, and what they think is possible and right for us.

  • joe ho

Trump’s Judicial Assault on LGBT Rights.

Thanks again, Bernie or Busters and Green Partiers! Well played! Well played!

You certainly showed us and that war-mongering, corporate whore Hillary.

    • Michael White

They will chip away at our rights just as they are doing for choice.

    • Joseph Miceli

Don’t leave out the quislings! Gays who voted for Trump because they don’t like black people and brown people need to go straight to Hell.

      • Todd20036

That Twinks for Trump crowd makes me ill.

      • Ninja0980

Or who think lining their own pocketbooks matter more then LGBT rights.

        • Joseph Miceli

          Or both.

    • Ninja0980

And even those most of these judges are simply replacing other Republicans, the fact is that some aren’t.
And as LAMBDA points out, if you are an LGBT people living in states controlled by the 5th,6th or 8th Circuits, you are now screwed thanks to Trump/Republicans and the judges they have put on there.
Because you add them to the W judges and the few St.Ronnie/George Sr judges on there, and you now have courts that are nothing more then right wing hellholes and will be for generations to come.
But hey, the BOB/Green Partiers sure showed that bitch Hillary and her supporters right?

  • JT

GMA: Just to show you how cold it is, we left a hard boiled egg out overnight, and you can almost use it as a hammer!

LOL. Dumbing down everything as much as we can …

    • Michael White

We have cups of water freezing before it hits the ground when you toss it. It is -12 with wind chill -30’s. Not as bad as others, but cold.

      • skyweaver

Not as bad as others? Wow, I thought I was bad here in Virginia where it’s 11 degrees. Come to my house and we’ll barbeque outside, friend!

        • ZRAinSWVA

3 in SW Virginia. Crispy. There is something almost charming about hearing the grass crunch when you walk across the lawn. Almost.

          • Acronym Jim

Why mow the lawn when you can shatter it?

          • stuckinthewoods

It was beautiful early this morning. The full moon in the west, everything glittering with ice crystals…didn’t quite compensate for getting up in 1°F, but..almost.

    • djcoastermark

Oh my, I hope you left the egg outside to get it in that condition. Brrr.

  • AmeriCanadian

O/T: My life would no longer be worth living is this comes true…

World could RUN OUT of chocolate by 2050

    • Michael White

thanks all that is good – I am 66. I would be 99 in 2050, but my family and personal history speak against longevity.

      • AmeriCanadian

I may not be alive either but the decline will be long and slow and prices will only go up and up. I may have to choose between paying the bills or having chocolate and I don’t want to be put in that position. 😉

        • Michael White

Is that even a choice? Chocolate after all. There is no scientific evidence of the benefits of statin drugs after 75, Sooooo, good bye lipitor, hello chocolate.

          • AmeriCanadian

I was on Lipitor for a while. Started developing terrible muscle pain and had a difficult time walking after waking up in the morning. I asked to be switched to Fenofibrate and voilà, no more muscle pain.

          • Michael White

Yes, the side effects can be terrible. Glad you found an alternative.

        • netxtown

Just remember – you don’t have to have the lights on to eat chocolate!

    • Treant

That seems…odd. Most plants, and all cultivated crops, are more flexible than simply existing in one or two places. From Wikipedia:

      • Rambie

It’s very hard to cultivate the cacao tree and even then it’s limited to 30 deg from the equator.

        • Treant

That would be a temperature/rainfall combination limiter. And, of course, “The cacao tree is native to the Americas. It originated in Central America and parts of Mexico.” So it’s not that hard to cultivate.

This is, of course, coming from somebody who can keep a gold star plant alive in Pennsylvania.

          • Rambie

You sir have obviously found your super power. I can do a garden but my indoor plants suffer, except the cactus. 😉

It’s been about 10 years or so since I looked into it, but at the time and if my memory isn’t going (subject to debate these days) cacao trees are difficult for industrial scale cultivation but there were groups actively working on it so times may have changed.

          • Treant

It’s January, I’m growing marigolds, ageratum, Madagascar periwinkle, and a host of 15+ year old houseplants indoors.

    • William

      Launch ALL the missiles.

      • AmeriCanadian

    • Todd20036

More likely, chocolate would be around, but it would cost $50 an ounce.

      • Nychta

That does it! I’m moving my money from gold to chocolate!

      • Rambie

I should Invest in chocolate futures now while it’s cheap. Wait, I’d eat all the investment. 😉

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Also our current banana type is endangered due to a nasty fungus. There are fungus resistant types but they look different or taste different or bunch differently. Not a banana fan myself but I know it’s a staple crop in some places.

    • kanehau

Meh… we’re growing cacao here in Hawaii – proving to grow quite well.

      • AmeriCanadian

Ooh…sounds like a retirement destination then!

    • Bluto
  • Stogiebear

How ironic is this? “Love is Love” unless of course you’re LGBT and then it’s just a hell-bound abominable lifestyle.

  • JCF

Only pre-indoctrination by Christianism could lead to something so spectacularly fucked-up (on every level). I thank God for the BAZILLIONTH time that growing up Episcopalian (before knowing I was queer) made me immune to this horror show…

  • Acronym Jim

I watched the newest episode of Shameless last night. Given Ian Gallaher’s response to the “gay-conversion” “ministry” depicted in the show, it seems pretty timely with this story. Maybe Emily should give it a gander.

  • JT

“Can’t I stay out for more than just a few minutes? Please?”

    • netxtown

you guys have got to stop posting these puppies – or i’m gonna end up with a whole houseful of ’em! And yes! labs are perfect! Such pure joy!

    • William

Our dogs have zero interest in going outside until the temperature is well above freezing.

      • netxtown

Mine thinks this place is an In & Out burger stand. Out for 10-15 minutes, then in for an hour. Then out, then in….over and over.

        • William

A couple of the cats are doing that. They are annoyed that I haven’t fixed the weather.

          • ZRAinSWVA

Hahaha! Mine as well. Our boy gives me this withering look as he sniffs the cold air coming in at the door, and then reluctantly heads outside…he refuses to use the litter box inside.

          • Nychta

When I lived in Wisconsin I had cats who loved to go outside, but didn’t like the cold. I’d open the front door for them, and they’d balk, ears back, when the freezing winds hit them. Then they’d run to the back door and ask me to open it for them, as if the weather out back would be different.

        • AJ Drew

Yup… the furry face at the door “Hey, let me in, I want to go out again!”

      • Butch

Our older yellow lab has diabetes, and with his short hair I had to get him a “coat” to wear outside in this weather – his “Caped Crusader” cloak. The golden’s feet freeze pretty fast in this weather (minus 25 wind chill this morning) so getting them out for exercise is really a problem.

        • William

My Boxer mix princess is wearing her sweater as she is snoring away in bed. I will have to remove her at some point.

        • Would he be happy wearing booties to keep his wee paws warm?

Our new puppy is going to have to accept wearing them come summer in Arizona, as the pavement gets crazy hot here.

          • Butch

Is there such a thing as what I’ve always jokingly called Reebarks? The lab is more susceptible to the cold overall but the golden’s feet freeze up really quickly.

          • Ragnar Lothbrok

I think there is, but unless they are stitched into the skin, my dog would rip them off in 2 seconds.

          • Vista-Cruiser

Pawz dog boots work pretty well. They’re like small thick balloons. To put them on, get your dog to lay on his or her side. They stay on and aren’t slippery on ice. As long as your dog doesn’t dig while wearing them, each boot should last about one month.

          • Ragnar Lothbrok

          • sells several different types. You might have a wee battle with him at first, but have been told that they learn to like them quickly.

        • Bj Lincoln

We have to Pits. One loves the snow but the other hates it. Both have coats because of the short hair. They start wearing them when I wear one. As for boots…..they have them off before we can make it outside. 8 feet are hard to cover all at the same time when the dogs are pulling them off almost as fast as we put them on. Funny how one from each pair was shredded in no time. LOL

          • Butch

That’s what I figured would happen. Pancho (the yellow lab) actually loves his Caped Crusader cloak – he’s sleeping in it right now, next to the wood stove – but I can’t imagine trying to get booties on them.

    • Boreal

      Totally gay

    • Treant

Oh, lord. If they weren’t covering it up hard like they always do, the sex pix would be out already.

      • AmeriCanadian

Well it certainly sheds some light on why Pence is so vehemently anti-gay. He’s bursting at the seams with self-hatred. Who would have guessed?

      • Rambie

Eww, too early in the morning for that mental image

    • Michael White

      does mother know?

      • Treant

Mother’s just happy that Pence’s dirty man-hands aren’t on her. She doesn’t care about it otherwise.

      • William

Mother wears the strap-on in the family.

    • DaddyRay

      hehe you said Staff

    • Todd20036

He’s a Narnia queer, and those are the worst quislings.

      • kanehau

That photo of a ‘younger pence wearing a harness’ is not actually of Pence… just a FYI.

“Her past involved just about every lesbian stereotype you can imagine…”

And that is the reason why she was unhappy with her alleged homosexuality, that and the drug use no doubt. Living a gay life according to the christianist stereotype is detrimental to your physical and emotional health.

    • Priya Lynn

“Her past involved just about every lesbian stereotype you can imagine…”

Maybe that’s because a straight anti-gay christian who believes in every lesbian stereotype made up her story

  • Billanddogs

Here’s what I posted on the comments of this video:

“There is true evil in the world, and this video is an example of it. I don’t
mean the lesbianism, I mean the condemnation as a “lifestyle choice”
what is an innate trait which God has created. This is the sort of video
which inspires gay teens to kill themselves and inspires parents of gay
teens to disown them. Repentance is indeed called for, but it is the
makers and promoters of this video who need to do it.”

  • Droz

Equating drug use with being lesbian is bullshit. Probably their way of blaming LGBT community for the opioid epidemic instead of the pharma corps that pushes this shit almost as hard as a standard dealer.

    • Halou

They refuse to believe that homosexuality is a natural and innate trait, and the ‘child abuse’ myth just doesn’t hold water so it has to be something else causing it..

  • HeyBudBoston

    • clay

Bisexuality is a bigger threat to their world view than is homosexuality. Being gay (for them) just means choosing the “wrong” gender role. Bisexuality means (for them) completely ignoring gender roles.

  • Michael R

Is there a chance this whole story including facebook page etc . isn’t a real person , just an actress and made up story ? ? I may be wrong but that’s the feeling I had watching it ..

  • Cleo

It’s actually pretty well done, which is one thing that makes this so twisted. It starts out almost like pro-gay empowerment video, but once it hooks you with the story it turns into such a horrible message. I can see “church-folk” falling for this and feeling a bit more sympathetic toward tough-love and conversion therapy. Notice it’s not a third-party condemning homosexuality it’s a “sympathetic” self-hating LGBT person. This is a very dangerous video.

    • clay

It would be good to see how many of those views were to completion.

A local performance some years ago of Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld had the inhabitants of the celestial realm lamenting how tired they were of nectar and ambrosia, and how they wished they were in Hades where they could have French Fries and Hot Fudge Sundaes. I decided then that Hell sounded hellishly more fun. It also didn’t hurt that the extremely attractive young man playing the role of Pluto appeared on stage wearing black leather pants, boots, a black spiked mohawk, and nothing else. Much whiplash ensued. Though I don’t recall much about the singing. . .

If their “God” does not make mistakes then BE HAPPY with being gay…because that is what “God” put forth in your life…

Ah religion messing with people lives for a profit

    • Natty Enquirer

But you see, theirs is a Paranoid God who must create disaster and hardship to see if his creations really love him.

Seriously, they will tell you that homosexuality, like all sin, is a result of Man’s Fall From Grace® and not a mistake by God. And as luck would have it, they will offer you the very cure for their imagined ailment.

i always suspected that plaid was offensive to jesus.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Do I detect her jesus accent ?

    All I need to know….

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Was part of this shot in a crackhouse ?
Is that where she found jesus ?
What the hell was he doing there anyway ??!

    • northern_neighbour

He was smoking Crack- Pot …. fyi.

  • northern_neighbour

Yep! The Evangelic pseudo-Christianistas are as always a One Trick Pony.

Exorcise the Wicked Gay … abhorrent to the Lawd! That’s their pony … all other sins are saved in Jesus blood … but for heaven’s sakes, kill off the Gays who refuse mind torture such as “Emily” has submitted herself here and paid her price.

Let the men beat their women into submission, force them to bear “quivers full” of
children, remain uneducated and poor and wretched. Rip away the food stamps, health care and all compassion, deny a living wage, poison the environment, and brainwash the armed to the teeth white male patriots and march them to war, to advance the agenda of the mega-billionaires in Jesus name. Amen.

Cuz they’re saved, don’t you see, and can be as greedy, wicked and “broken” as they want … and it’s all good!

  • Yup. Every lesbian I know, if you want to find them, they’re hanging out in the men’s room.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

That’s why I use the ladies room, so I don’t have to run into a lesbian checking out my junk.
      Wut ?

  • April

    Maybe she didn’t practice enough…

  • Leo

So this happened to make sizeable waves – not part of a larger concern though. I’m not worried at all. Whatever. Millennials are leaving organized religion in droves and there’s been a slew of editorials since spring over evangelical leaders realizing that term is now toxic to generations as they bought into power for Trump at the cost of their soul.

I’m reading the same arguments on Facebook from a decade ago from those most likely in communities that have been left behind from recent cultural shifts but will get there eventually. Vigilance in case of a backlash is always necessary, don’t get me wrong, but everyone needs to pick their battles in this larger war.

  • Sporkfighter

“Her past involved just about every lesbian stereotype you can imagine (plaid shirts, short hair, etc). “

I wear plaid shirts and shorts. Does that mean I’m a lesbian? Both my daughters wear shorts and plaid shirts. It’s a current fashion thing now.

  • Rocco

Hard to believe this is accurate or true. If so, congratulations to Little Missy Badwig on discovering her bisexuality. Her snake oil will seriously harm others though, and she will have blood on her hands.…THAT is real, and she (& the grifters @ Anchors Away) need to be held accountable. I am thinking a couple lawsuits after a couple successful suicides might do the trick. I am guessing they are in Dixie, based on Little Missy Badwig’s twang? If so, they will likely face no repercussions until the number of deaths starts to rise. Very sad. Glad these charlatans are being confronted though.

  • John Ruff

More domestic terrorism brought to you by Christians.

  • andrew

Another sad story about someone trying to be what they’re not and all because of primitive biblical notions.

  • Chris Larosa

From a refugee of the evangelical cancer: Is this at all surprising? The Bible “clearly says” in the OT
that the solar system was created in exactly 6 sidereal days, yet today,
through science and observation, we realize today this is preposterous. The Bible “clearly states” that
humans were created instantaneously, and approx. 6800 years ago, but through
science and observation, we realize today this is preposterous. The Bible “clearly describes” a
global flood and a family of 7 who built a miraculous boat that housed all of
the actual ancestors of our planet today, but through science and observation,
we realize today this is preposterous.
So what do these all have in common?
They are 3 embarrassingly major anti-scientific belief systems that 10s
of millions of just American evangelicals will fight to the death to believe, regardless
of incredibly foolish and irrelevant their beliefs. So why should they be any different when it
comes to human sexuality? In light of
the mountains of evidence that homosexuality is a natural occurrence and variation
in all sexuality and is clearly not a chosen orientation, unsurprisingly, these
fools believe and pontificate to the extreme opposite of everything we
understand today, damn the damage their videos and brainwashing creates. And when Exodus shutters their doors in 2013 finally
claiming Jesus don’t make gay folks straight?
    Didn’t change a thing. Fools.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

      Good to see you back.

      • Chris Larosa

Wow. Someone remembers me. (introduce creepy music now..). lol. Thanks. I took a long break from discus after I joined FB. I stopped sparing with the anti-gay loonies – a total waste of time and emotional energy. I just have to violently SMH when I still see ‘ex-gay’ krap like this video. How is this still a ‘thing’? And why do ALL these frauds claim also to have drug addiction, Satanism, bestiality, pedophilia, carpel tunnel, etc. as an intricate part of their ‘previous homosexuality’? Where are the 2 gay married run-of-the-mill working folks with 2 adoptive kids, a golden retriever, and a Honda Pilot who suddenly realized God was calling them out of their ‘sin’ and get divorced and join a Calvary Chapel? Hmmm….

        • Ragnar Lothbrok

Right, I think the jig is up for all but the severely ” touched “.
The overlap with trumpanzees is a likely a proven given.

          Anyway, I missed your “Charisma ” 🙂

If someone wants to become celibate or pretend to be heterosexual because of their private religious beliefs, fine, that’s their business. To promote such behaviour as either necessary, desirable, or praiseworthy, is most definitely not.

  • SFHarry

I had two thoughts while watching this video. First I thought I was watching a woman’s slow slide into mental illness which made me very sad. The second was a particular line she said which made me think something else may be going on for her. She claimed she had racked up a lot of debt and Jesus saved her from that. Now I know these types of churches do not pay you money to attend, usually the other way around, so I’m thinking maybe she is unconsciously using being saved as a way to skip out on all the debt she racked up. I’d be interested to know if this is the case.

    • John Masters

Don’t put anything past these folks. They might very well be paying her for her story. And to get the money, she’s telling them exactly what they tell her to say. It would not be the first time.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

        My thought too, John

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

I’ll say it again, I hate religion and all that it represents.

First off, PF is no more of a heretic than she is, if she claims to be an evangelical since their ilk pick and choose the scriptures they want to observe/believe/etc. Get real, young lady, and stop deceiving yourself. The list of scriptures, you claim ‘inerrant’, that you ignore, is LONG, honey. Google ‘hypocrite’ when you have a breather.

Second, she so desperately wants to believe God doesn’t hate her, that she has willingly swallowed a monstrous horse pill that, even though it contradicts her very nature, she will deceive herself for a season and assuage her cognitive dissonance by surrounding herself with like-deceived people to cheer her on all-the-while finding her fake footing in her posture of self-righteously judging those who have found our rightful place in being at peace in our own gay skin. She can’t be herself anymore, and neither can you, dammit. And the ‘ex-gay’ charade parade continues….

    • I remember a couple of threads on a gay discussion board a few years ago — not this one: IIRC it might was Box Turtle Bulletin — in which a rather vocal and judgmental christianist wandered in to the comments and kept insisting that Jesus commanded Christians to judge other people and that she feared being to Hell if she did not. She quoted Luke 6:37 (“Judge not, lest ye also be judged”) and flounced off in a huff when several people pointed out that the verse actually says exactly the opposite of what she alleged it did.

As I say, I can’t remember just where this was — and I’m not about to go chasing though years’ worth of archives of every one of the blogs I read/used to read to find it — but I do vividly remember that she signed herself “Emily”.

Why is it never “homosexual use and drug practice”?

I think we need a similar campaign about ex-Christians.

  • GanymedeRenard

Bullocks! There aren’t any longitudinal studies CONCLUSIVELY proving that sexual orientation can be changed in a PERMANENT manner!

The belief in an abstract being won’t change what neither a century of electroshocks, lobotomies, aversion “therapies”, chemical castrations, testicle transplants, having forcible sex with prostitutes (in the case of males), or “corrective” rapes (for females) have NOT accomplished. So good luck trying to erase us.

If anything, some studies have suggested that female homosexuality is somehow more fluid than its male counterpart, but it doesn’t mean lesbians or bi women are better off, or happier, being heterosexual.

What bugs me most about these insidious, deceptive religious groups is their notion that sexual orientation (or gender identity) not only can be changed within our LGBT community, but that they also should. Screw them!!

  • DaveMiller135

Dear God, spare me the zeal of the convert.

Ms. Thomes: It certainly isn’t about becoming heterosexual. It’s about making yourself live loveless and alone, for the comfort of people who don’t like you, and never will.

  • SammySeattle

Ex-gay is always rooted in misery. Seems they just trade one set of miserables for another.

  • Larry in Oklahoma

I hope I’m wrong by saying her former gay use and being a Lesbian being cured. It’s never cured. You have to keep telling yourself not to be that way. I know. I used to be a smoker and the temptation never goes away but I ask myself if I want my asthma to get worse? I’m not cured. I’m just a former smoker who has chosen not to smoke.

  • Al Prazolam

There seem to more more ex-ex-gays than ex-gays. They repress their sexuality, which is always near the surface. I have a special problem with LDS gays. The Mormon church is extremely homophobic. It has to do with their families and how they’ll become gods after death blah blah blah. Mormonism is an evil cult whose members owe allegiance more to their church than their country. I don’t see how gay Mormons can stay in the church.
