Pew Poll: Trumps Hits New Record Low Approval Rating

Pew Research reports:

Trump’s job rating of 32% is lower than those of recent presidents dating back to Ronald Reagan near the end of their first year in office. In follow-up questions, those who approve of Trump were asked if he has done things that have disappointed them, while those who disapprove (63% of the public) were asked if he has done things they have been happy with.

In addition, Trump’s job rating has declined among several groups that gave him relatively high ratings in February, including older adults (38% of those 50 and older approve today, compared with 47% who did so in February) and whites (41% now, 49% then), as well as white evangelical Protestants (61% now, 78% then).

A majority of Americans say they think senior members of Donald Trump’s administration definitely or probably had improper contacts with Russia during last year’s presidential campaign. And most are at least somewhat confident that special counsel Robert Mueller will conduct a fair investigation into the matter.

No. I didn’t. I’m still up at mom’s. That’s awfully close to you. Are you at work or home ? I hope you’re not home right now!

          • SoCalGal20

Too close! It started just after I left for Las Vegas. Hopefully I’ll still have a place when I get back. It was very windy when I left.

          • TimCA

Yeh, you mentioned 50 MPH gusts. I went thru this back in the 2007 fires as well. Was excluded from my neighborhood for 3 days back then. I guess there’s nothing either one of us can do about it now. I hope our places are still standing when we each get back. When I get home from the Bay Area in a few weeks, let’s go out to dinner again…….assuming Fallbrook and Bonsall haven’t burned to the ground. 🙁

Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

          • SoCalGal20

Horrible seeing the fire on tv. I still haven’t heard from my housemate if she got back to the house and/or evacuated. She texted me to say the traffic was a mess and that she would be packing up the car in case she needed to evacuate but that was the last I heard.

Fingers crossed both of our places are ok. And, yes, definitely let’s do dinner when you get back.

          • Bittermary

Damn! I’m so sorry. I am thinking of you and your housemate.

I just went to the Village News site. It says it’s 175 acres with 0 percent containment. There’s also a 3 acre outbreak near the SanLuis Rey Training Center. I hope they’re getting all the horses out now and that it doesn’t spread as my house is just a few miles northwest of there.

My mother, who lives in Oceanside, has decamped to my sister and her family’s house in Carlsbad because the smoke is so bad in Oceanside. And now my sister is texting us that the fire near them has doubled in size in 30 minutes…. So I’m worried for everyone in SoCal.

You and SoCalGal keep yourselves safe!

          • TimCA

            Hi John,
Thanks for your note of support. SoCalGal is on her way to Las Vegas so she’s safe. I’m currently away in Northern CA so I’m definitely out of personal harm’s way as well. Unfortunately I just found out that my neighborhood was added to the mandatory evacuation area a little while ago. I thought for a few moments of jumping in my car and heading south (I could be back home in 7 or 8 hours) thinking in case a stray ember ignites something on my house, I could possibly extinguish it with a garden hose. But finally I decided it would be a futile endeavor since most likely I’d be barred from entry into the evacuation zone. I’ve been in contact with several neighbors and friends around San Diego County who are keeping me updated and I’m following events as best I can via the net. I hope your mom’s place in Oceanside is not in harm’s way as the fire seems to be burning through the San Luis Rey River bottom westward towards Oceanside. Depending on where she lives in Oceanside she might be safer in Carlsbad. It’ll be a nervous night for 100’s of thousands of people this evening and quite possibly for the next few days.

Yes. The Nixon years were the beginning of the theofascist takeover of the Republican Party. Nixon’s “Silent Majority” morphed into the “Moral Majority” – Jerry Falwell’s money-making scam. Ronald Reagan’s administration welcomed in the likes of the Family Research Council – the corporate offspring of Falwell’s creation.

In Donald Trump the American theofascist movement has found its perfect (to use the Russian term) useful idiot.

TO believe in the Gospels and Revelations and the Acts of the Apostles is to take obviously conflicting stories and make them the unerring word of the all knowing and all perfect god. If you take the trinity as truth, you have to accept that god had his son, i mean himself, die on the cross to absolve us from sins that he himself knew/permitted/designed us to commit. You have to take that beards, tattoos, eating shrimp and adultery are sins worth of death or abomination status and ignore it while yelling that gay rights and trans rights are an abomination in the eyes of the lord. You have to accept that God made us man and women when modern medicine & genetics recognized 50+ combinations of genetics that produce various outcomes in our bodies such as women who actually are xy with androgen uptake insensitivity. Demons cause disease. Jesus did not know about germs and washing of the hands as disease prevention. You have to beleive that the dead saints rose and walked Jerusalem and not one Roman, or Egyptian or anyone writing history outside of the anonymous authors of the gospels noticed.

If you have to believe all these things and many many many more, why is it hard to belie that electing a man creditably accused of sexual assault, sexual batter of a 14 year old, a man who committed adultery with his wife is a stand for godliness. And that Al Franked resigning is just pure politics. Those interpretations are positively scientific compared to some of the things an evangelical ‘should’ believe.

      • DesertSun59

Belief that Bronze Age Middle Eastern tribal religious mythology, invented by goat herders, has something to offer our culture is pure unadulterated delusion.

        • Gianni

Well, that’s what it has to offer – delusion. Worse, is that in 2017, various fundies and evanges still swear by that delusion and still use biblical quotes to support whatever they choose them to support. It’s nothing new, just somewhat shocking to see them do that to support such non-christian, somewhat vile human examples as Donnie, Roy Moore, etc.

    • Mark McGovern

That is not necessarily true. There is t least one demographic ripe for the picking that we, in my opinion, cast aside all to quickly: young evangelicals. The problem is that LGBT have been so marginalized by religion (especially evangelicals) that the temptation is to lash out, ridicule their religion, intentionally push them away when, in fact, they could be supportive of at least some of what we believe in.

And before you accuse me of secondary motives, I do not practice religion, and firmly believe the world would be better place without it. However, with 6 billion people affiliating with a religion, I would be a fool to believe this will ever come to be in this, or even the next century.

Check out, for example, this site: http://www.yecaction.org/ . They are young evangelical people who have grown up with technology, climate change, and gay people. Can we hold them responsible for the bigotry of their parents? I fail to see how us ridiculing what they believe in spiritually (and I am not saying you are doing that) will benefit. To the contrary; if we drive them to the other side, it will harm us by swelling the voting coffers of our opponents. I am not saying we should compromise our principles, or make a deal with the devil. I am saying that demographic is potentially malleable…I also believe their are other potential allies in religion.

So, for what it’s worth, that’s my thought on it.

      • Chucktech

… the temptation is to… ridicule their religion…

I’m sorry, but the minute they get on their soapbox and claim “Jeezis is LORD!” (which is totally their right to do), I am going to mock them with as much scorn and derision as I can muster. Has nothing to do with accepting gay people or them being otherwise nice and reasonable. It’s about reality (not to mention science and logic and reason) and the respect reality deserves.

        • Mark McGovern

I completely understand. If that gives you the satisfaction or relief you need, who am I to criticize you? I can’t and I won’t.

That said, to me, it is simply a political strategy where there is no need to compromise principles. The world would probably be a very different place if Russia had allied with Germany rather than with Europe and USA, Russia’s enemies. Winning elections in order to implement your desired political objectives requires a strategy. While emotion cannot be disassociated with strategy. as Churchill knew and played very well, you still have to have the troops on the ground.

    • I was raised Southern Baptist and I can tell you with no reservations that you (and a lot of people) are finding out what those of us from that culture have known all along.

I’ve been saying it for years. They believe what the Republican Party tells them to believe. If a belief of the Republican Party is different than their long held, biblical belief then they change their belief. I’ve watched it happen over and over again for DECADES in my family.

If tomorrow, the Republicans declared that homa-sek-shality was OK, they would bitch and moan for a month or so and then they would fall in line. They repeat the same pattern over and over again.

The drop from 84% to 76% among self-identified Republicans is highly significant. Normally it’s in the 90% range among those belonging to the party of the current President, especially during the 1st year in office.

I’m always weirded out by the demographics in US polls. Dividing people by color, is that done in any other country’s polls?

And how come they only list ‘white coll grad+’ and ‘white non-coll’?

      • Size of demographic groups. There will be cross-tabs further down in the data to include the others. What’s listed here are typically the larger categories.

Don’t know if you noticed, but for instance in that charte up there, they’re not counting Asians or Middle Easterners or Native Americans. Nor non-Christian religions.

Yes, pollsters will examine different religions and ethnic groups when doing polls in other countries. It’s normal.

        • zhera

I never see that in Norwegian polls. The reasons for that may be that there aren’t enough non-whites to justify a separate category, I dunno, but still.

I think it’s weird and non-helpful when battling racism.

          • ChrisMorley

In the UK we find it helpful to be able to compare how different ethnicities and sections of the community are doing. We know racism, sexism, able-bodyism, homophobia exist, but quantifying the impact of these allows you to target further anti-discrimination interventions.

      • Treant

Next one. Short-term bills aren’t and really shouldn’t be a problem–the last time they were was the start-and-stop stuttering during the Carter administration. Nobody really noticed or cared, so it’s not a political game anybody cares to play any longer.

    • Lumpy Gaga

      Another two weeks.

The USA is living from paycheck to paycheck.

      • Ted.OR

Yeah, but don’t cash it just yet…. Or maybe, cash it as soon as it comes in.

        • Lars Littlefield

          It’s direct deposit.

  • Treant

That’s OK, he’s taunting the Middle East to start a war, so the idiots will support him better shortly.

  • Outlaw Woman

We’re going to see a lot more “gimmicks” from Trump, such as the embassy relocation to Jerusalem, in a desperate attempt to gain some approval.

He’s like Krusty the Clown having to go back to stand-up and not understanding why the racial mockery and flapping dickey gag doesn’t work anymore.

Please keep refraining from condemning the monster, congressional Republicans. Please keep it up.

      Good riddance. Very good riddance.

Although there has been some redistricting, part of his district was previously in a district that elected Gabrielle Giffords. So maybe another pick-up for the Dems?

OTOH, it includes Peoria, Sun City and Surprise, so they might end up electing somebody just as bad as Franks.

    • Friday

      Who’d he grope?

But but but he told us he’s the most favorite president ever I wonder what his rating will be once we are in a war with Israel

Gallup had Trump at 32 percent a week ago and bouncing back to 38 percent yesterday. I expect the trend to turn down again after his brilliant Jerusalem maneuver.

Both Gallup and Pew have 3 percent margins of error.

Also in Climate Change news this week:
Those models that have best predicted the current situation are the ones formerly considered at the more extreme end, suggesting 4.5-5C increase by 2100. (1.5C increase will be catastrophic for many populations. 2.0C will be catastrophic in nearly all inhabited regions.) Their success was primarily due to how they predict the effects of and changes to local cloud cover.

Once again: it’s more than enough to be re-elected. That 32% is scattered just so that they can win again. So…it means little practically for elections.

What is the lowest approval rating ever recorded for a sitting president?

  • Fred Beloit

There is just a leeeetle bit of good news:

    From Drudge:
2.2 Million New Jobs Since Election…
Record low unemployment rate for manufacturing…
Hispanic unemployment rate drops to 4.7% – LOWEST in history of USA… MORE…

The fact that 32% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance just boggles the mind. He is a total disaster by any objective criteria.

Am concerned re the lack of confidence in Mueller: the RWNJ attacks (SMEARS!) are having an impact.
