ALABAMA: Roy Moore Refuses To Debate Opponent

Huntsville’s CBS affiliate reports:

WHNT News 19 in conjunction with our partners at Reckon by AL.com invited both of Alabama’s US Senate candidates to participate in what would have been a live, commercial-free debate. The Doug Jones campaign accepted, but the Roy Moore campaign has declined.

We at WHNT News 19 believe that public debates give voters a chance to carefully consider who represents them. A seat in the US Senate comes with immense power. It should also come with immense accountability. Every politician, no matter their stances, party or position, should be open to conversations and challenges, even from those who might disagree.

We did not specify a format, allowing room to work with both campaigns on a mutually agreeable style. We intended to integrate questions from audience members and people following along digitally. We offered six different date possibilities between November 27th and December 7th. However, it was not enough to convince Roy Moore to meet Doug Jones in a public forum.

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

I can’t believe Alabamans like cowards.

    • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

I didn’t get that impression when I was in Alabama. Just sayin, you’re probably right!

    • FAEN

Really? I would think cowardice is their default mode.

    • Jeffg166

      If he’s white – alright.

    • Tulle Christensen

As long as you hate the right people, anything else is OK

    • inxs399

As long as they’re republicans .thye dont give a fuck what they did inbreads

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

“Doug Jones, sir, you arrrrre no gentlemen!” -Roy Moore

  • bkmn

Good for WHNT for calling out the chickenshit Moore.

  • crewman

A large number of Alabama voters would vote for Moore even if he stood in the middle of the street and shot somebody. It’s their way. The question is, how many undecided and open-minded voters would look at Moore’s unwillingness to debate and register a negative opinion of Moore.

    • Jeffg166

      Sad but true.

    • alguien

a large number of alabama voters would vote for him if stood in the middle of the street and shot himself.

  • FAEN

Of course he doesn’t want to debate-he comes across like a loon when he does. Because he’s a loon.

    • AlternativeQuacks

I was under the impression that would be a vote-getter in Alabama.

      • Octoberfurst

That’s what I always thought. The bigger a theocratic lunatic you are the more the voters in Alabama love you.

    • kaydenpat

Unfortunately, a Democrat hasn’t won a state wide election in Alabama since 2006 so the voters may be loony too.

      • The_Wretched

I wonder how that tracks with electronic voting machines.

        • kaydenpat

Good question. Virginia now uses paper ballots and thatvdhouid be the case in all states given the real danger of hacking voting machines.

          • Nowhereman

I keep saying that, too. Go to a paper ballot and hand counting. We end up having to count them again, anyway. And how stupid is it to outsource our electoral system to private companies who will not let us check them out, and whose CEO promised to deliver his state to Bush 43? Actually, my dream would be to have a mail in/drop off ballot coupled with automatic registration at the age of 18. In states that have it, the voters seem to like it.

      • FAEN

They are brainwashed which is why they keep voting against their interests.

      • Octoberfurst

        “May be”?????

        • kaydenpat

          Trying to be diplomatic.

          • penny

I’m in Alabama, trust me, they ARE loony….to say the least. They vote against their own interests because some preacher tells them it should be the way they vote! Pitiful and sad. Thanks to Gerrymandering, even the liberal minded folks here can never get any kind of say.

          • Craig Howell

Gerrymandering is irrelevant for state-wide races like this Senate contest. If Moore stays in and Al-Abama elects him anyway, the Senate could either refuse to seat him or expel him later–with all deliberate speed.

    • Ninja0980

He barely won the last time he ran.
Maybe he’s afraid history will repeat itself?

      • Keith D Plane

Mooee will win I’ll bet on it

    • Buford

He’s probably got a hot date with a Junior High cheerleader.

“Leigh Corfman says she was 14 years old when an older man approached her outside a courtroom in Etowah County, Ala. She was sitting on a wooden bench with her mother, they both recall, when the man introduced himself as Roy Moore…She says that Moore drove her back to the same house after dark, and that before long she was lying on a blanket on the floor. She remembers Moore disappearing into another room and coming out with nothing on but “tight white” underwear. She remembers that Moore kissed her, that he took off her pants and shirt, and that he touched her through her bra and underpants. She says that he guided her hand to his underwear and that she yanked her hand back”.

      • FAEN

More ‘Xtian Family Values’ at play. Dare I say a DUGGAR move.

        • Buford

It’s troubling, for sure… but it’s also troubling that some these women say that their mothers really had no problem with the relationships when the girls were 16-18 years old. Moore was ‘husband material’, apparently.

          • peacfulseas inWA

I wonder what the age of consent laws were at that time? It is Alabama.

          • Buford

I thought it was/is 16-yo, per the story.

          • ChrisMorley

The age of consent was/is 16. ‘Age of consent is incredibly important in Alabama. An individual who is 19 years old or older has sexual contact with someone who is younger
than 16 but older than 12 has committed sexual abuse.’
            https://www.ageofconsent.net/states/alabama

So Roy Moore seems to have seriously tripped up in his 30s with a 14yo. Any ‘sexual contact’ is criminal.

          • peacfulseas inWA

Thank you Chris. Next time I should actually read the full article 1st. Lesson learned. : )

          • Nowhereman

            16.

          • FAEN

Ironically these mothers and their friends probably scream about Muslim immigrants and arranged marriages yet they’re fine practically giving away their daughters so long as it’s a Xtian.

    • Scott Carpenter

Or it might have to do with the WaPo news alert I just got. Seems Moore likes his girls young. 14 seems to be the right age.

      • FAEN

JUST reading that myself. I bet the Xtians will be ever so silent about this and/or blame the girls.

        • charemor

Blame the girls; shameless little hussies.

          • Buford

They knew what they signed up for.

  • alguien

probably knows that a debate forum would expose his lack of knowledge about anything and chose to avoid that type of discomfort.

    • Jonathan Smith

oh, he knows alot, i am sure.
the bible, the bible, the bible, (Maybe) some law.

      • Tawreos

I seem to recall that his law professor says he only knows the bible.

  • Butch

What you afraid of,,Roy? Any chance a debate might show that you have no idea what you’re talking about?

  • Boreal

C’mon Roy, you don’t even have to show your face at the debate.

    https://cbsnews1.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/2014/06/13/c9f55432-8a91-43ad-955f-b1f63d879146/kkk86085408.jpg

    • Tawreos

The audience would still recognize him, I am sure they are used to that sight by now.

  • gaycuckhubby

Hopefully the same fate awaits him as McDonald (sp?) in Virginia who also refused to debate

    • TominDC

Are you talking about arch-homophobe Bob Marshall who refused to debate Danica Roem?

      • gaycuckhubby

Yes! I don’t know how I ended up at McDonald. Lol

        • Reality.Bites

          Skipped lunch?

  • Tawreos

His debate with Strange wasn’t very good and he knows there are enough topics out there that could hurt him so why risk it. I guess having god in your corner and your wife’s purse gun isn’t enough for him to stand up for what he believe in.

    • Buford

WaPo is reporting his history of dating girls aged 14-18 when he was in his 30’s. That might explain it!!!

  • Todd20036

    He doesn’t have to debate.
He’s white. He hates gays, hates non-Christians, hates blacks, hates educated people.
In Alabama, that’s all you need to know about him

The latest polls have Moore up by 8. Moore doesn’t need to debate because Alabamans don’t give a shit about issues.

    • Secure

Precisely why their state is a shithole.

    • ChrisMorley

The election is his to lose, so that counts.

  • gaycuckhubby

The Dems are bullish after Tuesday… I think we will compete

    • They’re gonna have to commit resources. Heard some signs they’re hesitant, which they shouldn’t be.

      • John30013

Agreed. It’s a special election, which means low turnout. If the Dems world turn out in large numbers, they’d win.

        • melllt

/ this right here. And it’s a seat in the us fucking senate. This doesn’t require wasting money on tv adds to change people’s minds. It needs someone to organize the logistics of getting democrats to the polls.

      • The_Wretched

The Dem party needs to step up. Moore is a terrible person and if they can’t run against him, they look terrible.

      • Lizard

Because if they do commit resources to a Democrat in Alabama, some people bitch and moan about how it’s a lost cause anyway and they should commit the money to a race somewhere more historically competitive.

        • Nowhereman

They do that here in Alaska, too. They don’t even try. We have a population of abut 750,000, and two prime senate seats ripe for the pickin. I vote every time, but it really doesn’t matter.

    • Lazycrockett

They need to do the same as they did in Va. Knock on doors and register voters.

  • GayOldLady

When you have a past like Moore’s and have had the associations that Moore has had, you can’t debate because your past would be laid bare for all to see. Racist, sexist, xenophobe, homophobe, transphobe, religious zealnut. I’m not sure he could win, not even in Alabamie, if the public knew everything we know about Roy Moore.

    • LaChatSayWha

Also… the WaPo just published a huge article documenting old boy Roy’s history as a 30-something creep who groomed and preyed on teenagers—14, 16 & 17 — when he was a district attorney in the 70s and 80s.

Hypocrisy will out, motherfucker. His rabid mouth breathing supporters and all the bots paid to hype him are out in force slandering the shit out of the women, but the truth will out.

      • GayOldLady

Uh oh! Even in the South of the 70’s & 80’s, there was no way, lawfully, for a 30-something to be with a 14 year old.

  • William

Rick Perry didn’t debate either, when he was running for Texas governor.

    • Taylor Bixler

      Didn’t or couldn’t?

      • William

        Didn’t because he couldn’t.

  • kaydenpat

Cowardly and cocky. Moore is way up in the polls but he should still man up and debate his opponent. What does he have to lose by debating Jones?

  • Bambino

With apology in advance to PickyPecker, Roy Moore is just another inflated yellow chicken that hides behind another.
    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3a353eaa1ef7b0b46bb14f541f10f3736760547065e3a4bd09a0d47556db63d2.jpg

    • Tor

That’s one angry chicken. The Monument looks like a blade in his (tiny) hand.

  • melllt

Please, please invisible sky daddy, can we get the DNC to go to Alabama and get the vote out.
We don’t need to change the minds of the racist white christians. We just need to get every democrat to the polls. Virginia proved getting getting people to the polls works.
If trump can shock the nation and be elected president, i see no reason why we cant shock the nation with the election of doug jones.
This is a perfect opportunity for the DNC to do fucking something and not just roll over and play dead.

    • Craig Howell

Anybody know the address where we could mail a contribution to the Jones campaign?

      • ChrisMorley

        https://dougjonesforsenate.com/
Doesn’t seem to have a mailing address. Donate online or contact the campaign and ask for mailing address.

        • Craig Howell

          It is so ordered. Thanks.

  • Pablo Sánchez

“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.” – Lincoln, Twain or Jesus

  • dcurlee

Are we surprised. He has God on his side so that’s all he needs. Scary that’s what most of his base thinks too

  • MikeBx2

As if debates make any difference Loonsville. In every single debate, Trump was like a chimpanzee compared to Hillary Clinton.

    • The_Wretched

The media white-washed how bad Trump performed in the debates.

      • MikeBx2

They certainly did, and I’m assuming the ratings of actually watching for themselves wasn’t very high in Alabama.

      • tbj5

Because they listened to Russian bots running cover for Trump after the debates, and chasing the clicks for cash, the media followed the narrative of these passionate “Americans” on Twitter and FB still believing in Trump.

  • Lizard

So…does that mean the debate will still happen, but it’ll be Doug Jones answering specific questions on his ideology and policies without a Republican screaming over him?

Because if it does, Jesus, could Moore hand him a better opportunity on a silver platter?!

    • MBear

Should have someone researching Moores prev commwnts on the subjects..
      Sort of debate by proxy.

      That’d be damning

  • Paul

Will they let Doug Jones debate an empty chair?

Although, in Alabama, the chair could get a ton of write-in votes.

    • Rebecca Gardner

…and marriage proposals too. Heck, may even get someone pregnant by the end of the debate.

      • Treant

The chair’s sister is going to be there?

    • Tulle Christensen

the chair would still be a better Senator than Moore

    • Uncle Mark

      No…..it’s too Clint Eastwood

  • Ninja0980

Like others, I want to believe that Roy Moore could actually lose but it’s more likely that since he knows he is a lock, there is no point in wasting his time with debates.

  • Lars Littlefield

May the power of the Universe gift us with a new Senator Douglas Jones.

  • Lindoro Almaviva

Perfect opportunity for Jones to have a televised, free, hour-long town hall meeting. i would insist they go through with it

    • Beto

      I love that idea.

  • Liz Burnside

Many Alabama voters have exquisitely sensitive hearing…they can hear a racist homophobic dogwhistle clear across the state, and react just like Pavolv’s dogs.

    • Trouble is, overtly bigoted monsters like Roy Moore have dispensed with the dogwhistle and are using megaphones and a bank of air-horns. But he doesn’t want the non-bigots to hear him anyway. So he hides and pretends he’s just a “pious conservative Republican” and hopes nobody looks closer at what he really believes and wants to do.

I mean, the MF is running for the Senate, but holds as a core belief that our federal government has no sovereign authority whatsoever over the state of Alabama.

      • Kelly Lape

As a Senator he can work to make that belief into reality.

  • Kelly Lape

It would be appropriate to give the entire hour to Doug Jones as a town hall. Moore was invited and was too cowardly to show up.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Well it makes sense. Debating requires a minimum of English comprehension, thinking skills and the barest of speaking ability…all of which Moore is lacking.

  • kareemachan
  • teeveedub

I decided to give old Roy some encouragement.

  • Friday’s_cat

They could put out a chair with an empty cowboy hat on it to represent Moore. It might do better than the real thing.

They should do the debate anyway, and his opponent should show up and prove what a spineless coward Moore is.

  • liondon#iamnotatraitor

He’s too busy working to free the Christians in the Sharia law towns of Michigan.

  • Cuberly Deux

Maybe, deep down, even they know how revolting and off-putting Moore really is.

  • Mike C
  • Cackalaquiano

Why should he debate? He’s going to sail into victory with no effort. It’s Alabama.
    Please let me be wrong.

    • djcoastermark

You really have to wonder how many times stones have to be hit up against the heads of alabamians before they wake up ? Sadly I think those stones have left them all brain dead by now.

  • band
    • Reality.Bites

If he was a Democrat he’d be out of the race. As a Republican it will make little difference to his support.

      • Taylor Bixler

Yes, another real life test of the power of partisanship.

      • band

Yes, a lot of Moore’s supporters will just be energized by this “fake news” attack on their Christian hero. But beyond his base, the age thing is really gonna drive people away, even in Alabama. Doug Jones might have a real shot now, especially if this snowballs, with women outside of this initial Post story also coming forward.

  • EdmondWherever

“We offered six different date possibilities between November 27th and December 7th.”

Schedule a debate. If the little prick doesn’t show put a cardboard cutout of the pos in front of his podium. When it is time for his opening statement let the clock run it’s allotted time.Silence is deafening once the audience is again reminded no applause and no emotional outburst until the end of the debate. Journalist would ask the the same questions and during the silence that would ensue from cardboard Moore I’d have Jones interrupt Moore based on comments Moore has made during the campaign.

Shucks – I bet a Roy Moore-Doug Jones debate would have been most entertaining.
In most ways, we all know Roy Moore as a raving religious lunatic, but in other ways, he can be as smart as a fox.
Roy Moore has finally figure out the more the public hears that he thinks, the more likely he loses support.
Which is exactly Roy Moore is ducking the press, news conferences. or public debates with his opponent.

  • JCF

Several women have now complained about unwanted sexual advances by Roy Moore, including one woman who was only 14 at the time. This is one more reason why Roy Moore doesn’t want to debate his opponent.

    https://boingboing.net/2017/11/09/roy-moore.html

  • I’ll tell you all this. If that Alabama seat goes to the Democrat next month the Republican Party is going to have a major collective heart attack. FYI Doug Jones, the Democratic Candidate, is not a centrist — he is fairly progressive on issues such as reproductive rights, and for Alabama, a downright leftist. The national Democratic Party continues to remain low key on the race as a deliberate strategy — https://ballotpedia.org/Doug_Jones_(Alabama)

  • Nowhereman

He DEFINITELY won’t want to debate him now.

    • Gianni

It was a good preemptive move on his part. That skeleton is falling way out of the closet now.

      • Nowhereman

I just hope there’s more to come. Of course, his voters won’t care–after all, Moore is a godly man…trying to impregnate 14 year old virgins against their will.

  • Marides48

He’s as dumb like tRump, he can’t debate.
