House Speaker Paul Ryan: Praying Is The Right Thing To Do After Mass Shootings Because “Prayer Works”

Those people in Texas were literally praying in church when they were murdered. But prayer totally works.

The Hill reports:

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) in an interview broadcast Monday dismissed criticism of his tweet saying the Texas shooting victims “need our prayers,” arguing “prayer works.”

“It’s disappointing. It’s sad and this is what you’ll get from the far secular left. People who do not have faith, don’t understand faith, I guess I’d have to say,” Ryan told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on “The Ingraham Angle” when asked about the criticism.

“And, it is the right thing to do, is to pray in moments like this because you know what? Prayer works.” “And I know you believe that and I believe that,” Ryan told host Laura Ingraham about prayer being effective.

“And when you hear the secular left doing this thing, no wonder you’ve got so much polarization and disunity in this country when people think like that.”

  • Todd20036

Man. He couldn’t be more patronizing if he tried.
And, BTW, prayer didn’t work for the church goers.

Also, this idiot is 3rd in line for the presidency if Mueller’s net only captures Trump and Pence.

    • paganguy

Paul Ryan is slime who would say anything and do anything to maintain his position. There is no way he hasn’t been involved in covering things up. My thought and prayers are completely devoted to his being included in what I call the Great Trifecta (with McConnell holding an honorary fourth position… just because).

    • Leo
      • zhera

        They are ALL traitors!

      • jerry

I’ve been hearing that for months now…that they were all involved with knowingly taking Russian money, funneled through various PACs.

      • don’t tease me

    • crewman

Right?! People were in a friggin’ church literally praying when they were mowed down by this guy or as they watched their baby children slaughtered.

Politicians that claim a program works need to show evidence. Prayer seems to be the only Republican response to gun violence. I want to see proof it’s working.

      • Frank Conway

Prayer, cutting taxes on the wealthy and trickle-down economics- all things Republicans LOVE and all things that DO NOT WORK in the real world.

Ryan, a fucking blathering evil hypocrite and total idiot should RESIGN immediately … if he had any human decency.

      He doesn’t.

Pray to god to “take him home.”

According to Ryan, that oughta work!

  • Gustav2

“the far secular left” ideas on religion are mainstreaming or haven’t you noticed no one is going to church?

    • prixator

“Thoughts and prayers” aren’t worth a shit if you’re alive, either, if not accompanied by any real relief.

  • Tulle Christensen

Maybe I am crazy, but is he suggesting those people at the church were praying to get shot?

  • Mike C.

Prayer didn’t work for the people who were murdered while praying in the Texas church.

I guess the victims should have prayed to not be shot.

This my friends is why we are in for violent and long days ahead. We have on one side, mostly white, “christian”, men and women who will not accept facts and reality. Then on the other side you have the rest of us. They cant accept facts and reality and live in a world where they think prayer really is the answer. Its not just a saying they truly believe this. They believe it and will deny facts even when its in front of their own eyes. You cant reason with them, you cant persuade them, you cant show them facts and expect them to be open to anything other than their false reality. There is only one thing they know and its violence. Its how they will react when presented with facts and proof their narrative is false. They are armed to the nines, mentally defunct and just waiting for an excuse to use those guns to take back America, Make America great again. They may not get far but it doesnt take much when you have a semi-automatic weapon. If you have not prepared yourself and protected yourself for this reality then start thinking about what you will do when this all comes to a head and our society breaks down.

  • Bambino

It works for someone who is the leading recipient of bribe from the NRA. Keep killing America! The prayers after every act of terrorism will keep NRA profit margin increase and line the pockets the like of Paul Ryan.

I pray that he’ll go back to washing clean pans

    • Butch

You’re aware the kitchen was already closed and they had to open it back up so Ryan could get these photos? I’m not kidding.

      • Uncle Mark

Worse than that; that Ohio soup kitchen lost A LOT of donations because folks on the Left assumed that the soup kitchen cut a deal with Ryan for that photo op, when if fact they did not. As a result, that asshole fan of Ayn Rand porn just hurt more hungry/homeless people.

Later, a radio DJ asked around Wisconsin if Ryan had ever been seen around his home state’s soup kitchens. None of then said he helped them; in fact, several said that they would happily welcome him, if he ever decide to help them.

        • Goodboy

You are ill-suited to dabbling in religion or spirituality as you have no heart, no soul and no conscience. No one cares what you think about prayer, as you are uniquely ill-equipped in such matters.

They were murdered in a church. If anything it’s more evidence of the failure of prayer.

    • Jerry Kott

“Prayer Works” Just how does praying to a God to help the survivors, who according to believers, had the power to prevent this massacre, help? Are there any decent humans who if they had the power to prevent this massacre from happening, would have stood by and done nothing, as their God did?

Prayers didn’t exactly work out for the 26 people shot and killed in that church.

    • Halou

One of the Fox hosts has said that there is no better place to get shot other than in a church, you’re closer to “the lord” so get to go to heaven that little bit faster.

  • 2patricius2

Ah, yes. Prayer works. It has worked so much better than stricter gun laws that we have yet more and more deaths because of it. It has worked so well, only half the people in the church were killed. It works so well, Ryan and his gun conspirators use it every time there is a shooting instead of doing something.

This man is disgusting. He can keep his prayers to himself. They do nothing for the people killed or for the people whose lives have been ripped apart by their losses. His proclamations of prayer and thoughts are revolting. If he really were a Christian, I would refer him to the words attributed to James: “faith…unless it has works, is dead…” I would add: “prayer and thoughts for victims of gun violence and for the survivors, without doing something to stop the violence, is dead.”

  • sfjohn

we all know you pray to that hateful, drug-addled mess known as Ayn Rand…

  • jmax

Paul Ryan – “People who do not have faith, don’t understand faith, I guess I’d have to say.”

James 2:17 – Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

James 2:20 – But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

James 2:24 – You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

Prayer is cheap. Even the book whose teachings you claim to follow says so. What “works” have you done to prove your faith, Lyin’ Ryan?

  • ChiTownGuy

  • JustDucky

  • Gene Perry
  • Sashineb

Yeah, prayer really worked on 9/11 when people were praying for people to be rescued from burning towers in NYC on 9/11. Oh, wait … God didn’t rescue them because he was saving them from a worse fate???

  • PhillyProfessor

Paul Ryan is a pathetic lickspittle.

  • Halou
  • ChiTownGuy
  • -M-

There are plenty of religious people on the left and secular people on the right. The criticism is that people, like Ryan, whose job is secular legislation are offering nothing but these thoughtless false prayers and crocodile tears.

  • BlindBill

So he espouses that the “far left” are atheists that do notunderstand that prayer works. I am not part of the far left – regardless of his unstated operational definition of what makes a person part of the far left – yet even l do no know how Paul Ryan praying for a toddler that has been gunned down by a white Christian male with a AR-15 makes a difference to the toddler or the toddler’s mother.

Maybe he should tell us what he asked God to do for a dead child or the living mother or the community? Or is the praying part of what he does to numb his own conscious as he greedily takes more money from the gun lobby.

    • David Walker

Does he even pray? It takes a little time to pray; it takes less time to say you prayed. How do you challenge such an assertion? But it sure sounds good. Plus we’ve all witnessed the miracle of thoughts and prayers re: Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

      • Talisman

He prays to the Profits daily.

  • TexasBoy

Those people in church were praying…were they praying to die that day? IF so, then yes, prayer works.

  • David Walker

“And when you pray, pray loudly and on a religious radio show so all the faithful can hear you. For I have thoughtfully given you the valuable gift of homophones. Say ‘pray’ and mean ‘prey,’ for such is the kingdom of Tea Baggers.” Letters to the Inertians 1:3, RSV.

Open Book Ministries Inc. sets the standard for serving the Lord rather than “playing church.” Rather than preach about the community, we serve within it.”

As the quote above shows, actions indeed supersede the tired and untrue othering of Alt-Religious banter.

  • PhallicMetaphor

I’m stealing this prayer bit, next time someone needs help moving? I’ll pray that your move happens quickly. When my wife needs help cleaning? I’ll pray the house gets cleaned miraculously.
Prayer is great when you want it done but don’t want to put in the work.

  • Gregory B

Yeah, prayer works eh, Mr. Speaker? Show me one example where prayer has prevented or stopped someone intent on killing innocent people with assault rifles and god knows what else. You are a disgrace to the American people you are supposed to serve. It would not be a stretch, I think, that to imagine that you pray that you and your family will be spared such a fate, but I’m guessing that that is what it will take to get the ball rolling on gun control. Nowhere else in the civilized world does anybody carry guns or have unfettered access to them in the same way Americans do. It’s not something to be proud of, let me assure you.
Paul Ryan, Trump, Pence, the Republican party and the NRA are a disgrace to all Americans.

    • Vista-Cruiser

You’ve erroneously put the US in the civilized world. It isn’t.

  • Daveed_WOW

Notice they don’t actually show that prayer works. They only use it as a weapon to attack their political enemies. So I guess prayer works.

  • mjsatty

  • Ben in Oakland

If prayer worked, 90% of the Republican Party would be moving to Russia,

  • TJ

  • BradCav

Paul Ryan can fuck right off for saying that people demanding action on out of control gun violence lack faith. A majority of ALL Americans of all political and spiritual backgrounds now want some form of gun control. Not to mention, there is a vibrant religious coalition of progressive and mainline Christians, as well as many “pro-life” Catholics who believe very fervently that the answer to our prayers is for the government to finally take some action to curb access to weapons whose only purpose is to kill a lot of people very quickly, and to make sure that dangerous unstable people have the medical care they need to help them manage irrational and lethal impulses.

  • teedofftaxpayer

  • Barry William Teske

Paul Ryan, single handedly sets the lowest standard for serving his nation,
the United States of America, by playing democracy as if it were fool and not the foundation.
Rather than telling a truth about his own possible complicity to the many treasonous acts, as of late, plaguing the United States of America, his go to is to accuse and demean any others that do serve their country and not just pretend so.
Othering just outed your true intent Paul Ryan.
You just did it in the company of some of the worst offenders.
Your embracement of the Alt-Right’s weaponization of spirituality will earn you a place in the scrap heap of history as a closeted fascist.
    No one forced you.
You were bribed by your own lack of self and unawareness of an other, and in doing so you did it to yourself.
That gives you at most, a footnote mention in the history books as ‘Mr No One’.

If the known universe with it’s probably hundreds of billions of galaxies actually has a creator, it is abundantly clear that it is not the least bit interested in what happens on this little rock, we call earth. We’re on our own folks.

Dear Paul, Not only are you spineless, you’re also an idiot. In these situations, prayer only works because you boneheads convince yourselves that you’ve really done something wonderful to help by putting it in God’s lap. If nothing positive comes from it, well those grieving families can take it up with HIM! You did all you could to ease you own guilt for really doing nothing. If prayer works in such situations, show us the track record, or at least face up to the real-world track record. These killings are happening every few weeks or months and you keep “sending” your prayers. Apparently, God likes what is happening ’cause He hasn’t even slowed it down and certainly hasn’t cleared your vision or your mind. People ask repeatedly, “How many times does this have to happen before the people who can do something about it, really decide to DO something about it?” Prayer isn’t the answer, action is – legislative action. This is where we hear the best part: No amount of gun control will stop all these killings. Right, we can’t stop them ALL, but that’s not a logical reason to not work to stop some of them. Republicans – PLEASE WAKE UP.

Is Ryan allowed out on his own without a custodian? Or does he just make do with a white cane and a guide dog?

Let’s see if I have this right; Paul Ryan, a devotee of Ayn Rand, an outspoken atheist and advocate of the primacy of reason, claiming that prayer works. He has got to be seriously schizo to be a Randite and a devout Catholic at the same time.
