Twitter Bans Ads From Kremlin Media Outlets

Politico reports:

Twitter said Thursday it’s dropping all ads from Kremlin-funded English-language media outlets RT and Sputnik, as the company prepares to face lawmakers next week over Russian use of social media to interfere with the 2016 election.

“This decision was based on the retrospective work we’ve been doing around the 2016 U.S. election and the U.S. intelligence community’s conclusion that both RT and Sputnik attempted to interfere with the election on behalf of the Russian government,” the company wrote in a blog post. The Twitter accounts of RT and Sputnik, however, remain active.

A report released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in January called RT the “Kremlin’s principal international propaganda outlet,” which was part of a media apparatus that “made increasingly favorable comments” about Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign “while consistently offering negative coverage” of Hillary Clinton.

Especially when they were specifically told in January.

That is slow even for the IT at the office.

  • Not good enough. Why the hell haven’t the RT and Sputnik social media accounts been banned as well?

Seriously, if Twitter has enough info to ban ads from both of these Russian propaganda outlets, why continue to give them any voice at all to spread their anti-America lies and insurrection-fomenting?

    • Gustav2

They are no longer whores because they stopped taking the money.

    • Treant

      $$$$$. Obviously.

      • Lazycrockett

Problem is twitter has never made a profit.

    • Todd20036

They got caught. And they completed their mission – they got a pro-business idiot into the WH

  • GayOldLady

Hahahaha! Well that was a no-brainer and about 18 months too late.

  • Pollos Hermanos

As long as they don’t ban fine Russian entertainment like this, I’m okay with it.

  • Treant

Yeah, that really helps out. Or, why I used Twitter for a very short period until I found out how bad the problem really was. As of now, I’m boycotting it.

  • bkmn

While the Russian powers that be have set up thousands of alternative accounts to carry on. Twitter, FB and google need to stop helping them target their ads too.

    • pch1013

I enjoy responding to obvious Russian trolls with: “Президент США В.В. Путин благодарит тебя за поддержку.”

      Shuts them up every time.

Isn’t it nice to see all the helpful businesses that want to stop Russia NOW that republicans are in charge of everything?

    • Tomcat

I am thinking after the trump reign we would be better off under Russia.

      • Lars Littlefield

        That’s the plan.

      • pch1013

As long as we’re going to be condemned to totalitarianism, I’d rather live under Chinese rule. The food would be so much better.

    • tbj5

You mean NOW that they’re getting threatened with subpoenas for knowingly enabling their platforms to be weaponized by a hostile foreign nation, and then lying about it?

Our best hope is to convince trump Putin is much smarter than he is and wants to take his wealth.

Isn’t it time to ban Trump?

As explained in the Twitter Rules, Hateful conduct: You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease.

    • fahvel

if that statement is true, your orange bobble head should be given a suit to match his coloring and his fine – oups, best – sense of taste.

    • Paul

It shouldn’t be too hard to set up a twitter account that simply copies his tweets word for word and tweets them.

Then see how long it takes to get blocked/banned.

      • TrueWords

        That would be excellent…

Twitter knows that Trump is violating their rules but they DO NOT CARE

  • Tawreos

SO RT and Sputnik will form other companies in America, run the same ads and Twitter will take the money and not give a damn if they are damaging the country.

  • Joe in PA

Hmmm, and how are the Russian sanctions coming along, huh trump? The only fucking piece of actual legislation you’ve signed?

    • Joe in PA

October 1 was the DEADLINE Trump. POS.

    • He *did* sign legislation letting crazy people buy guns. There was that, too.

Such a shitty Thursday, until I heard la Piaf singing ‘La vie en rose’ on KCRW, almost as soon as I got in the car this morning!

    Thank you, Jason Bentley!
Hope your day goes well, too!

  • zhera

Technically this should include banning the Orange Menace. He’s Kremlin-founded, he lies 100% of the time, he’s offensive and mean on purpose.

    Ack, a girl can dream!

  • jruffdc

Twitter is the tool of choice for trolls, racists, and mysognists. I used it for a second then quickly uninstalled it.

    • I use it, but I’m very careful about whom I follow and whom I allow to follow me.

I only ‘mute’ those who I just want a break from reading (mostly overly prolific posters), but anybody I find objectionable in any way is blocked immediately.

      • -M-

Make a point of reporting any harassment or trolls you see.

If you have the time maybe go to their profile first to report some of the troll accounts they retweet or are associated with.

      • jruffdc

Ok, honestly, I have a hard time making sense of tweets due to all the # and @ signs and abbreviations. It bothers me. I must be special needs

        • canoebum

No, you just grew up speaking and writing English. Who knows what the hell that mishmash is?

          • jruffdc

It’s ridiculous. God I feel old.

      • Paul

Muted words is a useful feature too. I added MAGA and suddenly my feed is 90% cleaner.

Wondering if there’s a list of known words to add to it, like Killary etc.

    • Paul

I’d like a verifed option. Only see verified accounts and ones you’ve added to a whitelist. Sure you’d still have to block a few but it’d probably take less time.

      • jruffdc

        Hell yeah

Way past due…now Facebook must do the same…it they haven’t already. Something tells me Facebook has not, and will not, until forced to do so.

Barn door. Empty stalls. Horses gone. Horse-thieves rich from the auction.

Better late than never, I suppose. And all the Teahadi fascists will be surprised in ’18 when their echo chanber seems somehow…. smaller. And quieter.

  • Charles Nelson

I am sure that Twitter will accept all ads (revenue) from other Eastern European countries.

  • Halou

Russia pours hundreds of millions of dollars worth into these outlets, even when they were in recession and even the military budget was being cut, RT and Sputnik were being given more money. Russia is not so stupid as to throw money at a project that doesn’t work.
RT and Sputnik are worth more to Russia as out-of-country assets than even the Russian military. They work.

  • Ronald Reagan is Dead!

I use Twitters Tweetdeck application for Mac and I never ever see Ad’s and my feed is sorted chronologically.

  • fahvel

why??? whathave the russians done that the usa has not done? Ah ha, maybe they do it better??
