REPORT: Trump Joked Pence Wants To “Hang” All Gays

From a lengthy New Yorker profile of Mike Pence:

“Trump thinks Pence is great,” Bannon told me. But, according to a longtime associate, Trump also likes to “let Pence know who’s boss.” A staff member from Trump’s campaign recalls him mocking Pence’s religiosity. He said that, when people met with Trump after stopping by Pence’s office, Trump would ask them, “Did Mike make you pray?” Two sources also recalled Trump needling Pence about his views on abortion and homosexuality.

During a meeting with a legal scholar, Trump belittled Pence’s determination to overturn Roe v. Wade. The legal scholar had said that, if the Supreme Court did so, many states would likely legalize abortion on their own. “You see?” Trump asked Pence. “You’ve wasted all this time and energy on it, and it’s not going to end abortion anyway.” When the conversation turned to gay rights, Trump motioned toward Pence and joked, “Don’t ask that guy—he wants to hang them all!”

The above-linked article is titled The Danger Of President Pence and the full piece is very worth your time.

  • Mark Née Fuzz

We still need to get rid of Trump. Then we can work on Pence. There are probably enough skeletons in his closet, too, that he won’t last long.

    • Gustav2

It would take more than year to impeach Trump, by then we will have a more D congress…hopefully.

      • fuow

Hopefully is right – a lot of intelligent, well-versed people are not seeing our chances as very good.
First, Trump’s hard core supporters are very strong voters.
Second, swing voters and independent voters are nearly always really just Republican voters.
Third, gerrymandering and voter discrimination laws are nearly all aimed at voters who might vote for a Democrat.
Fourth, and I know some people here don’t like to hear the truth – we on the left are awful at voting, period.

          • fuow

Yes, dear, and this helps us how? The facts of the matter lay otherwise.

I think anything that DOES take down Dump will take down Pence as well.

      • Stuart Wyman-Cahall

Yup….and Agnew went before Nixon did.

    • JCF

ITA. Pence is, I believe, 1) less likely to nuke North Korea, 2) has less charisma (I know, barf) than Drumpf. He’s (comparatively) easily defeatable.

  • Acronym Jim

Actually, I suspect Mike Pence wishes all gays were hung. He’s had a few disappointing trips to the airport bathroom.

  • Rex

My takeaway from this is Trump’s “faith” and “Christianity” is just an act to appeal to his base and the religious right is buying his bullshit. And, of course, we all know Pence is a danger to LGBT rights.

That was my takeaway when he came down the escalator and announced he was running.

    • M Jackson

trump’s christianism is nothing more than a cynical joke — at Pence’s expense, I’m okay with.

      • IDavid

Zactly. Trumps a player. And a baby. But still a player. Would the devil put his hands together close his eyes and kneel for the presidency, you bet!

      • Michael

It isn’t Christian – it is not following the Gospel of Jesus Christ – it is a complete and utter fraud – and he gets richer by the day – hoarding up treasures on earth instead of heaven. Sad. Very sad!

    • Leo

I’m approaching tin foil territory but I wouldn’t be surprised at this point of some sort of coup to put Pence in power. Trump was always a means to an end.

Pence is up to his neck in the Trump campaign’s conspiracy with Putin and Putin’s agents, as well as up to his neck in the obstruction of justice that the Trump transition team and administration have engaged in.

          • Rambie

Pence is, but so far the evidence trail hasn’t really been pointing directly at him. Like Bush Sr, I suspect he’ll sidestep when the anvil comes down and get sworn in as POTUS.

          • UrsusArctos 🐻

No Russian involvement here. Manafort holding the plane in Indy to bring in Pence for a VP casting call isn’t collusion. Putin knows 45* only wanted someone who looked “Presidential”. Pence’s Sears underwear model/plastic look was bought hook, line, and sinker by 45*. Mission Chaos rolls on. /snark

          • boatboy_srq

How many Congresscritters, though, would prefer charges against Pence? He was one of them, and he’s so much more presentable (in an 1840s kind of way, but still). My biggest fear is that the few GOTeahadis whonwould ouat Lord Dampnut would stop there.

          • Amanda B. Rekendwith

They are eternally surprised aren’t they. I keep saying to them, “Honey, just because you Log Cabin dicks and Trump both hate the blacks, that doesn’t automatically mean Trump likes YOU!” They never get it, though.

I never buy the whole “an enemy of your enemy is a friend.” Too many groups disprove that.

  • greenmanTN

Well what do you know? Trump actually CAN tell the truth sometimes!

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

But it seems only in private and only to mock someone who can’t fight back.

  • Karl Dubhe

Silly bible thumper, the ‘good’ book tells you to stone the gays, adulterers and other sexual sinners.

And you’ve got to stone them to death outside of the city walls. You can’t stone people inside the city, according to their ‘good’ book.

Do any of the cities in the USA have walls? 🙂

    • Christopher

If they’re going to claim to follow “the word”, then the rest of us should be sticklers to detail.

Or, I guess they could just pick and choose what passages they’d adhere to. Nah, they’d never do that. 😉

    • Paula

That’s funny, my bulbul says do unto others before they do unto you.

      • Karl Dubhe

The bit about stoning people is in the first part of the book ‘they’ worship.

The latter part of the book, which I’m sure they’ve never read, also says that he who is without sin should chuck the first rock.

    • Kissmagrits

If they don’t have walls now, they soon will have…to keep the hungry climate refugees out of the food supply. Not to worry, though….there’s always Soylent Green.

Thanks, Joe. The backlash against equal rights was always going to come.

  • Darrel Cj

The upside of Pence’s religiosity is that he is probably conscious on some level of what a hypocrite and sell-out he is in his own frame of reference for collaborating with Herr Trump.

    • Gustav2

Pence is only there to supervise the appointments to the courts.

    • CanuckDon

He likely cringes every time he has to be in the same room with Trump. If this all gives Pence daily discomfort, I’m okay with that.

  • Abortion is a very important issue to evangelicals. Approximately 50 million of them in the US believe abortion to be the murder of innocent children. That’s why every clinic in the country is surrounded 24/7 by tens of thousands of protesters. /s

    • fuow

It is also a guaranteed vote driver for Republicans while those who support a woman’s right to choose are not guaranteed voters.

    • KnownDonorDad

In seriousness, though, there are still protestors every morning on the weekends (at least) at Planned Parenthood even here in Boston. Gay weddings? None of them seem to care any more, except for a few cake martyrs still hoping for crowdfunding money.

    • shrpblnd

Trump is correct. If Roe v Wade was ever overturned the issue would go back to the states. While they might get abortion banned in a few red states, it would be impossible to do that in say California, Illinois, or New York. We are not living on the 1960’s anymore. Yes, this would increase travel costs for women, and hit the the poor hardest of all, but the US will always have legal abortion.

  • Joe in PA

I’ll just leave this here, a somber look at what this admin has done to our “visibility”. Whether this is Trump or his cronies…it ain’t good.

Pence is what worries me with impeachment of dotard. Just his mere ‘ascension’ to the high chair of the kingdom will be sufficient to bring out the right wing voters in droves. Unfortunately, we can’t count on dem voters to give a fuck.

If you think gorsuck is bad for the SC – Pence would probably send a “Roy Moore”…

  • IDavid

Yup. Impeaching Trump is a bad baaad idea.
Though we know Pence likes to get down on his knees, no one wants to be forced.

    • Friday

Frankly, Pence is already there. It’d be better to prosecute the whole corrupt administration, but he’s no less toxic while he can hide behind Trump’s outrages and antics.

      • GayOldLady

Pence is not going to survive this, even if Trump is impeached. He’s complicit. He lied to the American public and when the bricks start to fall he’s going to go down with a lot of others.

        • Friday

          I hope so.

        • IDavid

Explain how you see them “going down” except through the next election.

          • GayOldLady

I don’t see Pence being “better”, I see Pence being much more stable and sane than Trump and that matters in dealing with situations like NK and Iran. Anything Mike Pence would/could have done to the LGBT community, Trump has already done. There’s no bill,no EO, that Mike Pence would sign that Trump would have refused to sign. And Mike Pence was the choice of Paul Manafort for VP, I wonder why? Pence lied to the press and to the public about why Director Comey was fired, even though it’s now known that Pence knew the real reason Comey was being fired. Pence lied to the press and to the public about knowing that Mike Flynn was talking to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, even though it’s now known that he was informed that Flynn was communicating regularly with Kislyak. It is now known that Pence knew of Flynn’s business connections with the Russian’s even though he said he had no knowledge both to the press and before the American people in an interview. We now know that Flynn revealed his relationships to the transition team that was led by Mike Pence even though Flynn didn’t reveal those relationship via FARA. Mike Pence is as complicit in these campaign ties with Russia as Trump is.

          • IDavid

            Gotchya, see below.

          • Bad Tom

Lying to the press and public is despicable, but not illegal. What actual crimes do you think Pence has committed? Omitting stuff on his FARA?

          • GayOldLady

Lying to the public is illegal if he did so as part of a cover up. The charge would be Obstruction of Justice. One of the indictments against Nixon was lying to the public in the Watergate Obstruction of Justice case.

    • GayOldLady

I disagree. Impeaching Trump is an excellent idea. There’s little that Pence can do that Trump hasn’t already done through EO. The GOP will not take up anything like a Constitutional Amendment banning Marriage Equality regardless of who the GOP president is. All they can do is what Trump has already done through EO, the DOJ and the Dept of Education.

      • IDavid

We’ll keep our eyes peeled. It’s that ghoul look on Pence’s face that actually scares Frankenstein Vampires and Werewolves out of haunted houses at Halloween that has me a tad worried. I can handle over tanning but…..

    • Jay Mills

Absolutely not true. It is critical that Trump be removed for many reasons. As for the assertion that DT is somehow “better” for LGBT, that has been proven false, obviously. Pence is dangerous, but he does not have the charismatic “charm” to lead DTs bunch of wingnuts. Cut off the snake’s head and it dies.

      • IDavid

Pence is a crack head delusional religious nazi, Trump does buffer that, if even mildly I. e. abortion. Would you really rather have Pence run your legal sex life?

        • canoebum

Pence has all the charisma of chipped beef on stale toast. Once Der Herr has been removed, Pence will be incapable of governing. And if you think there’s not an indictment waiting for him as well for his part in the Flynn matter, you’re not paying attention. He’s every bit as guilty of obstruction of justice as the The Orange Menace.

          • IDavid

Ok. I’d say dried up dog bone but nonetheless, it seems the whole Russian debacle is a smoke screen to cause confusion, and isn’t going anywhere. I’d like to see some actual teeth bite down on that sitch. I think abortion would be a red cape to the raging bulls if Pence actually replaced Trump.

          • canoebum

Don’t you remember how badly he face-planted in Indiana? This guy is an unimaginative, pasty GOP apparatchik. He’s in way over his head and is complicit in the cover up of obstruction of justice. Even in the unlikely event that he doesn’t resign when presented with his indictment, the chaos in the GOP will bring the Democrats back to power in the House, and he’ll be up to his eyeballs in investigations from Day One.

          • Ray Taylor
          • IDavid

On yes I remember Indiana, that was an 8 train pile up. Impeach Trump then bury Pence. That has a very nice ring to it.

    • Halou

Considering how closely engaged Pence was in Trump’s foreign relations fuckery, odds are he wont have any political capital to spend on anything other than staying alive.

So many jokes with this administration.

  • scorpiomike

About the part where he says if the states legalize abortion, Pence has wasted his time fighting Roe: I think it misses the point of the fight. I do not think the vast majority of these folks really give a damn about abortion or homosexuality. We know they have trouble with empathy. If it does not directly affect them, they do not care. These fights are about attracting their crazy voters.

And their $$$$. That’s what these fights have always been about. Whatever ramps their followers up enough to loosen their purse strings.

  • Michael McReavy

This makes pro-Trump LGBT voters all the more infuriating – especially ones who steadfastly defend him while kissing ass to the far right, like that moron Peter Boykin.

  • EdA

Concededly Pence is a slicker piece of drek than is Benedict Trump, but almost certainly he already has a major role in the nomination of sociopathic judges, who are among the major threats to our rights, both as LGBT citizens and as human Americans in general.

Regardless of what happens, we must all do our best to reduce the number of Republiscum in Congress, particularly in the Senate — and express our appreciation duly to those parasites on our community who worked so hard to keep Hillary Clinton from becoming president.

    • The_Wretched

No, I don’t believe it’s hyperbole to say that since most Christians in the U.S. seem to have the same sentiment in mind. And before any Christians here trot out the “not all Christians” trope, until your leadership is as vocal as these idiots, both in the pulpit and on the airways, I don’t want to hear it.
