Homocon Site Again Fingers Innocent Man As Terrorist

The Washington Post reports:

Geary Danley was not the gunman in Las Vegas who killed at least 50 people late Sunday. But for hours on the far-right Internet, would-be sleuths scoured Danley’s Facebook likes, family photographs and marital history to try to “prove” that he was.

The right-wing news site Gateway Pundit also picked up these rumors as fact in a now-deleted article. That article’s URL was still the top result for Danley’s name on Google in the early hours of Monday morning.

The headline, still visible in search results, and remaining on the first page of results for Danley when I ran my 9 a.m. search, read, “Las Vegas Shooter Reportedly a Democrat Who Liked Rachel Maddow, MoveOn.org and Associated with anti-Trump Army.”

After Gateway Pundit accused an innocent Michigan man of being the Charlottesville Nazi terrorist, a lawyer for the man’s family vowed to sue. So far there are no reports that a suit has been filed.

NOTE: The “THIS IS FALSE” message was added by a Twitter user, not Gateway Pundit.

This SOB is going to get someone killed someday, he really is.

Are we sure it hasn’t happened already?

      Trump or Hoft?

  • kcken

Alex Jones was already on the air calling it a “false-flag” attack.

Sigh. Somedays I just want to set the world on fire.

  • hoover2001

Please, somebody sue them out of existence.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

Gateway Pundit – still the unchallenged “Stupidest Man on the Internet”.
And these Klowns have the audacity to scream “Fake News!”.

    • TCinBerkeley

Don’t forget his twink homunculus, Lucian Whatever.

  • gaycuckhubby

I hope they get sued out of existence

    • boatboy_srq

This is the biggest problem with libertarianism: redress is after the fact, and too many “libertarians” are more interested in Tort Reform (!!1!1) than preventing the problems in the first place.

      • The_Wretched

It’s a subtle point but has huge impacts. We should have regulations to prevent harms that are difficult to remedy after the fact (and are fully foreseeable).

  • boatboy_srq

They’re so eager to find a scapegoat culprit.

You would think that a “news” organization would be more interested in unearthing fact – oh, right, facts are for liebruls.

    • coram nobis

Marinus van der Lubbe wasn’t available as a scapegoat this semester.

Serious question… does ISIS have a history of taking credit for events they aren’t involved in?

    • Tomcat

      Why, of course.

      • gaycuckhubby

I know thats the general concensus. But are there examples?

        • Bad Tom

          This one.
In truth, we should wait until the authorities have investigated his social media & search histories.

But unless you keep tabs, the resolution will be lost in the geyser of stuff happening everyday.

        • Bad Tom

          The FBI has already investigated.
          ISIS is not involved.

          “But are there examples?”

          THIS ONE.

        • This Slate article details that ISIS has become less reliable in the last few months, pointing to the casino shooting in Manila and few other instances.

There aren’t really any. Open carry, no license or permit needed (I guess?), no limit on magazine or clip size, etc.

I don’t think most Trumptards have reflections.

    • Lizard

It surprises me to see that on a Baptist church…

      • Wiki has an article on this church. They sound pretty cool actually.

        • Lizard

          Huh. Well, good for them.

      • Tulle Christensen

Do not confuse southern baptist with baptist

        • FAEN

I must admit I tend to do that. I didn’t know there much of a difference. Are Baptists slightly more liberal?

          • Lizard

Well…southern Baptists are so over-the-line conservative that any other faction looks pretty liberal by comparison. But yeah, they can be liberal. This particular church, for example, has ordained several liberal ministers and is accepting of LGBT identities.

          • FAEN

            Thanks matey.

          • Shy Guy

I believe the Southern Baptists split from the Baptists because they (Southern) were pro-slavery.

My mother is a (Welsh) baptist, and when we lived for a short time in NC, we went to a (probably Southern) Baptist church there once, before realising they were nothing like our baptists, and we went to a methodist church after that.

          • jerry

Yeah, I grew up going to an American Baptist…it was more like a Methodist church than the hard-line evangelical Southern Baptist.

          • Baptist is a word used by a large number of denominations. I believe the church pictured is a predominantly African American church in midtown Manhattan. Not remotely affiliated with Southern, Missionary or other right wing Baptists.

          • Hryflex

The husband of a former co-worker of mine is a pastor in the Regular Baptist denomination. He has officiated at least two same sex weddings. When his daughter got pregnant out of wedlock he told her that he would not oppose an abortion. He and his wife like to hang out with a lesbian Presbyterian minister and her wife. There are many flavors of Baptist.

Money is great, but how about, oh I don’t know..some Standards ?!?!

        • Standards? What will you ask for next Principles?

        • David Walker

They have that, but they spell is $tandard$.

    • Kelly Lape

Google news didn’t “promote” the thread. Google analytics picked up the thread and because it was extremely active it became the top response to a google search of the name. That’s how Google works.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

Tell the guy that tweeted that.
All these social media venues need to get their act together.

      • barrixines

        That’s how Google isn’t working.

      • Halou

Google bombing. Sometimes it can be fun, like when searching “French military victories” it instead referred you to French military defeats. Other times people have been less than comical, such as putting antisemitic trash at the top of searches for “Holocaust”. Every time it happens Google says they’ll fix their program but it keeps on happening just in different places.

        • Kelly Lape

    • I spend probably a half hour playing around with the settings on Google News to get it to be what should be the default settings, i.e. no far right wing nonsense sites. I was tired of half the articles being from Breitbart or the Washington Times.

  • HZ81

    They’re hideous “human beings.”

  • Tatonka

With 50 dead and hundreds wounded in only five minutes of shooting, I wonder how long it will take Alex Jones and his band of bozos to start bleating about false flag operations and the “deep state.”

*edit* Nevermind. I see from the comments below that it’s already happened. What a filthy piece of dung he is.

    • Tomcat

It was all done with stunt doubles. No one was killed or harmed in the liberal production of WE NEED GUN CONTROL. /s

      • boatboy_srq

Exactly how many liberal billionaires that free with their money, and how many willing footsoldiers, do they think there are? You would think that if they’re as outnumbered as all their claims imply, they might have second thoughts about whether they are on the right side…

    • barrixines

They have already identified one of the crisis actor corpses as also being a grieving mum at Sandy Hook, one of the leapers on 9-11 and a stunt double for Laverne on Laverne and Shirley.

  • Ninja0980

O/T but watching CNN and am seeing the cop who proposed to his partner after DOMA was struck down on TV.
Guess he does stuff for them now.

  • Lindoro Almaviva

You could set an atomic clock by them.

  • Ken M

And the (Right Wing crowd) goes wild.

  • Lizard

This was probably planned. It doesn’t matter that they pulled it. The damage is done. Now some people, no matter the evidence to the contrary, will steadfastly believe that this shooter was a liberal who liked Rachel and hated Trump.

This is evil in media form.

    • AmeriCanadian

It is evil and it just shows that we on the left are dumber and slower to not do these things first, especially knowing that this is the modus operandi of the right. Just how long will it take to learn to use their strategy against them? I’ve been waiting decades.

      • Lizard

Because it’s disgusting and wrong to defame innocent people?

The day we define being ethical as “dumb” is the day I give up on this country.

    • This is a common tactic. Put something out, Wait for it to be forwarded/retweeted, then delete it knowing that it will continue to spread but allowing the original poster to claim that they had retracted it. It’s a despicable practice and one that needs to be called out. We should wait for facts. Speculation helps no one, but the so-called mainstream media is lousy with speculation in lieu of facts. Here’s an idea, if you run out of facts on a story, switch to another one. I don’t have cable any more but I’m willing to guess that CNN has dropped Puerto Rico as a story for nonstop coverage of the LV shooting. Am I right?

      • canoebum

A lie can travel halfway round the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes.

  • Lakeview Bob

Jesus fucking christ what is wrong with these people? And what difference does it make if he was a Democrat? What in the hell does that prove?

    • Lizard

It plays into their narrative of dangerous unstable Democrats who are out to “get” innocent conservatives trying to enjoy an evening of country music. After that impression sets, the facts won’t matter. People believe what they want to believe and this is just feeding their confirmation bias.

This was a targeted media strategy, and it’s going to work.

      • Tawreos

It will also be hyped by the NRA so that they can let people know to go buy all the guns before the liberals come to kill them.

        • Lizard

And they’ll use the tsunami of “Now can we talk about gun control?” to get their base to panic, run out, and buy more guns in case gun control is passed. (Which it won’t be.)

I feel like I’m watching a chess game unfold. We know exactly what their strategy is and exactly how it’s going to unfold but can’t do anything to stop it.

    • SoCalGal20

Of course it makes a difference. These right wing fuckers want a civil war. They want the left GONE.

  • Ken M

Nevada should be renamed “The Addiction State” Gambling, Alcohol, Drugs, Guns, even Tobacco products are cheaper (if bought on Reservations.) If it’s immoral, unethical etc., this is the place to go and do it.

    • UrsusArctos

The are features, not bugs. They chose to build their economy on “sin tax”. No judgement here. If commercial sex/drugs/other “vices” were legalized/normalized/taxed across the nation the country would be a lot safer and stronger.

      • Ken M

The American escape from it all. Especially the guilt of morality ie religion.

    • Friday

There is kind of the big question if this rich old white guy with two airplanes gambled away everything or something like that. Then for whatever reason decided to say”Screw everyone else” and take it out on huge crowds of people just in time for that “revolution” RWNJ’s have been tweeting about for two days from now.

    • canoebum

There are also very many nice, normal humans living and working there, creating new things, raising families, innovating and adapting to a harsh climate, helping other people. Your brush may be a bit too broad.

  • Blake J Butler

    I’d sue.

  • Rex

As an innocent man, I know what it’s like to be fingered incorrectly.

    • Mike_in_the_Tundra

I definitely have a dirty mind.

    • barrixines

Straight man? God knows how many times I’ve had to say to one – no matter how long you jab away at it like that it’s not going to get wet all by itself.

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

Surely Gateway Pundit must be funded by Russia.

  • The_Wretched

I hope they are sued but the damage is already done. The RWNJs are getting their bias confirmed and, in reality land, there’s too many open questions and lack of evidence to make comments like they have.

  • The_Wretched

I wonder if they suspect that this shooter is a RWNJ and need to get ahead of that narrative.

  • Ken M
  • FAEN
  • Bad Tom

Gateway Pundit, Alex Jones, and their kind always claim any tragedy is a false flag, or was perpetrated for political ends that are always the fault of the left.

    Every. One.

They never offer sympathy or empathy or help to the victims. Never.

To them, this is simply an opportunity to grift off the news attention being given to the tragedy.

    They. Are. Jackals.

    • -M-

This should be on billboards everywhere.

      • David L. Caster

And the systemic defect cured or at least exploited in some way to counter its effects. That is, use the amplification of these false stories to counter them in social media by, for instance, cleverly debunking hashtags on Twitter.

  • Cuberly
  • barrixines

Fuck knows why I am indulging this nonsense aspect but the FBI have denied there is any link to international terrorism.

I feel betrayed. If you can’t trust ISIS to tell the truth who can you trust?

    • David Walker

Come now, my good man. How can you write that? You know it’s “whom can you trust” and not “who.” I’d expected better from you.

      • barrixines

Awfully sorry but I was using my Strunk’s Elements of Style to wedge up a leg of the bed.

        • David Walker

Well, I’ll accept that this time.

      • grada3784

        Damn, I am so old.

These fricking right wing publications that willfully defame innocent people just need to be shut down and thrown in jail. This is blatantly criminal, if you asked me.

  • JT

He should sue them into oblivion.

  • Barry William Teske

Where evil goes to and grows, so do the lies.

  • Highmoremotel

If you have to lie, cheat and steal for your cause, your cause is for shit.

  • Publius

“I wonder why Facebook news algorithms prioritize widely shared and discussed clickbait/fake news stories.”

*Clicks on link to an article about fake news, which only boosts the story on Facebook news feed*

  • JWC

This is precisely what the world does NOT need right now Getting to the real facts is difficult enough with the inclusion of bat shitt crazy fake news to stir it up

  • I read somewhere that ISIS had taken credit for the attack. I suspect that they didn’t, but fake news is most common in a crisis or disaster (even when people are attempting to report accurately).

Also, my opinion about the shooter and that he shouldn’t have been able to buy machine guns does not change depending on his political views, associations or anything else. This shouldn’t have been possible.

    • Ken M

I’m a little grey on this, but doesn’t ISIS prefer their shooters not to commit suicide. Sign of weakness and all that. I’m aware of vehicle users, but that’s a different method and suicide isn’t always an option.

      • Johnny Wyeknot

        Suicide bombers?

    • Chucktech

I doubt that he bought a “machine gun.” Apparently you can modify a semi automatic assault rifle to be fully automatic. Ain’t America grand?

  • Gene Perry

    Fake News … for real.

  • Halou

Do these people have an “In the event of terrorism” list of otherwise random names ready to use for days such as this?

  • ColdCountry

These assholes should be required by law to print HUGE retractions, not simply delete their posts and pretend it never happened. And then they should be arrested for endangering the lives of innocent people, and then sued into oblivion by the person they falsely accused.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

Or sued for liable. That might be the most effective way of shutting them down.

      • Natty Enquirer

“Reportedly” gets them off the hook.

    • Halou

Similar to newspapers. Though I would add that any retraction from any media be given the same slot as the story they are retracting.
So if another “It was a Democrat” article is put front and center during a primetime slot so everyone on earth can see it then so should the “Actually, we lied” article. None of that bottom of the page in small print at 2am on Monday shit they’re inclined to do.

  • Ken Berry

I hope he sues Gateway Pundit into oblivion. If only Peter Thiel wasn’t so deplorable.
