Hannity Beats Maddow In First Head-To-Head Week After Bringing In Major Right Figures As His Guests

Politico reports:

In the first week of the head-to-head battle between Sean Hannity and Rachel Maddow, the conservative heavyweight drew significantly higher ratings than his liberal counterpart.

Hannity pulled out all the stops, bringing in Steve Bannon, Bill O’Reilly, Paul Ryan and Rush Limbaugh to boost his numbers. It appears to have worked: The Fox News pundit pulled in an average of 3,498,000 viewers from Monday through Thursday, with 713,000 in the key adult 25-54 demographic, according to early Nielsen figures.

Maddow averaged 2,649,000 viewers, with 599,000 adults 25-54. CNN’s 9 p.m. hour — which usually features Anderson Cooper’s “AC360,” but this week had two special town halls — finished third, with 1,173,000 viewers and 416,000 in the key demographic.

Rachel Maddow finished the third quarter at #1, the first time an MSNBC show has done so. Her ratings were up 75% over the same period last year, largely due to her dogged pursuit of Trump’s endless scandals.

I’m certain if The Real Housewives went up against 60 Minutes we might get similar results.

  • Tawdry D’Tails

As with most Fox “news” men, they won’t be able to keep it up for long…

    • another_steve

      Love your screen name, sweetie.

One of the best I’ve seen.

    • DonnaLee

What will he do, have them all back on next week too?

  • CPT_Doom

And the night Hannity had Bill O’Reilly on, Maddow was conducting a heartbreaking interview with the mayor of San Juan. I’ll take the lower rated show with real news any day, thank you very much.

    • Gigi

Hannity’s fans don’t give a fuck about anyone in Puerto Rico. Most of them don’t even realize, of care, that Puerto Ricans are American citizens. #smh

      • Mike__in_Houston

Shit, most of them couldn’t point out Puerto Rico on a map…

I would like to see a break down of the key demographics. However I will say that its amazing how much Rachel is pulling in seeing how her audience would trend younger and do not get their news from traditional network/cable sources.

  • another_steve

Can you imagine the voices urging the Sexual Predator-in-Chief to gay bait Rachel and the other openly gay and lesbian anchors on MSNBC and CNN?

    Think about it.

The pressure on him must be amazing.

    • Skokieguy [Larry]

Notice how Trump seldom talks specifically about Rachel or Seth Meyers? They are filleting him on a nightly basis with fact. He generally goes after more general and easier targets. And of course there was Seth’s turn at the Correspondent’s Dinner.

Seth is watched by non-political junkies, so he (and to a lesser extent Colbert) are reaching the public and using humor to wedge information into their noggins in a very effective way. Look at how Kimmel so dramatically impacted the healthcare debate (granted he had a heartrending tale of his baby’s health issues). But its exactly because Kimmel is watched by non-news junkies, that his audience was really walloped when they could not ignore the impact of politics on the real world.

      • another_steve

It was fascinating to watch Trump and his surrogates go after MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski. I think they did that because they know that “Morning Joe” attracts a less progressive, more Republican-leaning audience.

Trump’s base more or less dismisses people like Rachel and Joy Reid and Lawrence O’Donnell as leftest commie homos and lezzies, so Trump apparently feels no particular need to attack them.

        • Skokieguy [Larry]

Is it that, or is it that Rachel and Joy are heavyweight threats? Meyers isn’t considered a left wing show, but Trump doesn’t talk about Meyers.

In my mind Trump’s ego things that to even let a name pass his lips is like bestowing a gift and he wants to deny them any publicity and keep them off the radar. Better to talk about Joe & Mika and the NFL and give his base easy targets for water-cooler outrage.

  • Tawreos

Big Deal! He can’t pull out the big guns every week so let it settle down a bit and see who wins then.

  • Bluto
    • Tawreos

He is just opening that wide to flatter the guest list he had last week. All of them combined wouldn’t need that much space

    • Nowhereman

      What big hands he has!

  • Ninja0980

The nice thing is she could care less.

    • Skokieguy [Larry]

Exactly = but OMG, Hannity and the right are screaming this from the rooftops.

      • Tawreos

And when he starts losing to her he will be saying that his audience is more patriotic or some crap

        • Nowhereman

He loses to her every day of the week no matter what the ratings are.

    • Gerry Fisher

  • bambinoitaliano

Give me the same time slot with a gorilla, a moose, an elephant and an alpecca I would beat the rating too.

    • popebuck1

  • John Christenson

A bunch of climate deniers and Trump supporters does not guarantee a dram of truth or facts I am staying with Rachel Flash in the pan are just that Let’s check ratings a couple of weeks down the road

  • AtticusP

Comparing Rachel Maddow to this little dweeb Hannity is like comparing apples to assholes.

    • Nowhereman

Boy howdy–that’s the truth! And I wouldn’t watch his show or the guests he had on it if you paid me.

  • Uncle Mark

Except it WASN’T a head-to-head match. Hannity had to bring in. a shit-ton of his “friends” to help him. If it was a REAL head-to-head match, Maddow would bitch slap him silly any day of the week.

    • kelven

Seriously. If she had lined up comparable figures from the Left, she would have knocked him out of the ring.

      • Stuart Wyman-Cahall

There are none, sadly. Not enough bloviating hyperbole on the left….just some facts (like they matter).

    • Doctor Doctor

and more people tuned into CNN + MSNBC combined then Fox. by over a million. So suck it Hannity

    • Nowhereman

I really doubt that Rachel gives a rat’s patootie about what Hannity is doing.

  • Gigi

And to think, many people attacked Maddow (lots here, btw) for spending what seemed like an inordinate amount of time on Trump’s troubles. I guess someone knew what she/he was doing. Good job, Rachel!

    • Joe in PA

I know I’ve attacked her for time, but not for the topics. It was about the length of time it took to explain something. I’ve yelled I GET IT RACHEL more than once! But maybe that’s my 10 second attention span. 🙂

      • Gigi

Just between you and me, I listen to her show on Stitcher if I’m having trouble sleeping. I’m out cold in under five minutes. 😉

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Hmmmm….Hannity had to pull out all the stops just to beat Rachel; but now that all those stops have been pulled, what does he have left.

Yes,I could have used a different analogy, but the idea of using anything remotely sexual where Hannity is concerned was not in the offing.

Well, it looks like he blew his wad with all the “big guns” (gag) of the Right. Watch his figures crater in the weeks ahead as the novelty and hype wear off.

Sounds like FOX is looking a reason to bring back O’Reilly.

  • Lizard

He’ll run out of heavyweight guests eventually and Rachel will be back on top.

The PBS series “The Vietnam War” was on head-to-head with Rachel this week where I live–and that may have had a lot to do with it. All the libs/progressives I know were watching that…

    • fuzzybits

I need to see it if they play it all at the same time. It was on at different times here.

Salmon Rushdie (sorry if I misspelled) was being interviewed by a Philadelphia NPR host yesterday…he said the he cannot stand to listen to Trump…has to turn the sound off and read it instead. I agree.

I have to mute him too–and his mouthpiece Huckabee. They are both horrible speakers. And how stupid are his followers that they haven’t figured out that no matter how many words he spews, he never actually SAYS anything.

        • Joe in PA

LOL typing “you do?” a the same time. 🙂

        • Nowhereman

He’s a carnival barker. He just says the same few words over and over in random order and pretends like he’s communicating.

      • Joe in PA

You do? Sounds to me like he is trying to brag. Arrrgh…I just want to scream.

      • Nowhereman

He makes W look like an eloquent speaker. “Fool me once…”

She has been playing childish games about trying to bate someone (Russians) into picking up a fake news story that she has created about a US state seceding from the union. • CB

This is an idiotic story. I would put the surge down to curiosity from Hannity’s core audience. I sincerely doubt anyone switches between the two shows or turns off one to watch the other. It’s not like watching Bewitched versus I Dream of Jeanie. (With all respect to you, Safari.)

  • greenmanTN

No matter Hannity’s ratings he’ll always be #2.

  • It seems odd to say “only” 1,173,000 people were watching something. If a million people purchased anything of mine I could have an early (if somewhat frugal) retirement on the profits.

    • Bad Tom

Do it two or three times and your retirement wouldn’t be so frugal.

  • Nowhereman

I like quality. And the truth. And I doubt that anybody who watches Fox would suddenly switch to MSNBC or vice versa. Instead of pushing “ratings”, how about comparing the shows on the quality and accuracy of the host and the guests. Rachel does actual journalism–something that Fox doesn’t even have a passing acquaintance with.

  • Gerry Fisher

How Republican of him, all instant gratification-y, grabbing at short-term gains at the expense of long-term success. Quick “shock and awe” with no over-arching strategy.

  • Daveed_WOW

I don’t think there’s any overlap in their audiences

  • Gianni

Hannity is a first class douchebag. He doesn’t deliver any news at all. It’s all hard right-wing opinion and conspiracy theories. He repeatedly tells his audience that they’ll never hear any of what he’s telling them on any other news media. My only thought is that it’s because there is absolutely nothing newsworthy about what he’s supposedly reporting, which is usually some sort of constantly rehashed nonsense about Hillary’s crimes and machinations during the campaign.

  • SoCalGal20

That’s a little deceptive, as far as ratings go. Rachel and Hannity had the same .3 or .4 rating in the demo every night except last night. Last night Rachel was .3 and Hannity was .4. In total viewers he did beat her but her viewers are substantially younger than his. Also, I wonder who he had on last night because he had like a 1.2 million viewer lead. On Monday, in contrast, his lead was like 600,000.

  • Henry Auvil

In trump’s America, things like integrity, honesty, intellect, fairness and compassion don’t mean dick. It’s all about the ratings, baby.

  • Happy_Housewife

Fox News is almost always part of the basic cable package while MSNBC is almost always part of a “premium” package. Thus, lower income, less educated people many times don’t have access to MSNBC.

  • Barry William Teske

    An accident.
    Still hasn’t been cleaned up.
    Hence the ratings fiasco.
    Feeding looky-loos is profitable.
Anyone else, supposedly looking for truth on Fox, are part of the lie.

  • Charles Nelson

Next…Hannity will do an interview with a resurrected Adolph Hitler and 30 million Americans will watch his show. Guess which 30 million?

  • Bad Tom

    Can Hannity keep it up?
    Stay tuned…
    Actually, I won’t.

  • Who cares? All Hannity offers is bread and circuses.

  • RealityBass

Look at those demographics — 75-80% of the viewers of these shows are 55 or older!

    • JAKvirginia

Yep. They’re just dying to watch!

  • JAKvirginia

So… it was Bigot Week on Hannity?

  • Robert Adams

Like we Maddow have time to sit around and watch TV.

  • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

I’d like to beat Hannity, so I guess it all balances out.

  • JCF

Well, I was on (TV-free) vacation this week, so I guess it’s my fault. Sorry, Rachel.
