Facebook To Hand Over Russian Ads: We Don’t Want Anyone Using Us To Undermine Democracy [VIDEO]

The New York Times reports:

Under growing public pressure to reveal more about the spread of covert Russian propaganda on its site, Facebook said on Thursday that it was turning over more than 3,000 Russia-linked ads to Congressional committees investigating the Kremlin’s influence operation during the 2016 presidential election.

“I care deeply about the democratic process and protecting its integrity,” Facebook’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, said during an appearance on Facebook Live, the company’s video service. He added that he did not want anyone “to use our tools to undermine democracy.” “That’s not what we stand for,” he said.

The announcement that Facebook would share the ads with the Senate and House intelligence committees came after the company spent two weeks facing calls for greater transparency about the 470 Russia-linked accounts that it took down after they had promoted inflammatory messages on divisive issues.

My understanding is that the ad categories are self-created by Facebook users. If people create the categories themselves, then the Fb ad program automatically offers them to buyers. I don’t think actual human beings sign off on any of it.

ditto here. It’s useful sometimes, but otherwise, I want nothing to do with it. even my name is a real fake name. Ben N. Oakland.

      • Reality.Bites

I basically have it for people who ask me for it. If they’re people who are actually present in my life I let them know I’m highly unlikely to ever look at anything they post. I have 25 friends on FB (I’ve never friended anyone from work or family) and there are 15 who I’ll likely never have occasion to speak to again either on or off Facebook.

One of my FB friends is a guy I met on gay.com who I went for a dog walk with once. (That’s not a sexual term). I must have still been in his email contacts when FB came around. Most of the others are people I’ve met on vacation. I’ve never sent a friend request, except to my boyfriend.

He uses it for self-promotion and networking and has 3100 friends. But he certainly spends little time there. I think he uses SnapChat more.

For myself, I communicate with people I know in real life privately. When I see something interesting I’ll send it to those people who I think will find it interesting. I can’t imagine anyone in the world caring where I’ve “checked in.”

        • Ben in Oakland

I see it exactly the same way. My friends seem obsessed with it, I would rather just talk to someone. I’m unlikely to check facebook to see what anyone is doing. If they want me to know, I can ask or they can tell.

“He added that he did not want anyone “to use our tools to undermine democracy.”

Everything they’re doing is damage control, retroactive. They don’t have the monitoring capacity to police their “tools” because they have no clue how their “protections” routinely get breached with such little effort.

Or, maybe they do know how open ended they are. Maybe they’re just dragging this out.

  • tbj5

    A year too fucking late.

Fuckerberg was acting like he was going to run for president this last year or so. While denying the full extent of Russia weaponizing Facebook and him letting it happen.

The only conclusion I have is that he was planning on using similar influence tactics whenever he was officially going to run.

Now that Mueller is on his doorstep, the shit kid is meekly trying to save face.

    A year too fucking late.

  • margaretpoa

Too late, rich boy weasel. They played you like a fiddle but they didn’t even have to do that because you’ll do anything for a fucking buck. I’m really glad that I’ve never given you or facebook the time of day.

Accepting paid ads from Russian IP addresses to influence a US election sure sounds like treason to me. I doubt he’ll do time, but I hope he loses his shirt.

  • kelven

No apology for the massive clusterfuck that Facebook has a big part in creating. I don’t believe his earnestness for democracy is stronger than his desire for profit or taking responsibility for allowing this to happen in the first place.

  • HZ81

So FB is the place for pics of ugly babies, ridiculous political rants form family and friends, more ugly babies and propaganda.

Translation – We had so many employees leaking this information to Director Mueller that we had absolutely no other choice than to produce the information before we had a major PR disaster on our hands. We sold adds targeted at Jew haters even though I myself am a Jew, but hey, I made good money doing it.

    • Halou

People like him really do reinforce the stereotype.

      • Reality.Bites

Totally unnecessary thing to say. Extremely offensive to me as a Jew.

  • TrueWords
    • Halou

It is partly our fault as internet users. We want to freely access any and all websites, so the sites have had to either put up paywalls or come up with alternative ways to make their money, as is their right as a business. If every Facebook user agreed to pay something like $12 a month then there would be no need for all this insidious ad and tracking software, and multi-terabyte sized databases full of user data would not be bought and sold behind our backs.

      • lymis

All true, but really immaterial to the point at hand. Zuckerberg wouldn’t have been hurting financially by refusing to accept ads and postings aimed at subverting our democracy.

Accepting them, however is likely to cost him. And it should.

      • LOL. No, they would charge you $12 a month and STILL be selling your data.

        • vorpal 😼

That being said, you can use facebook without providing them with any meaningful data about yourself.

    • kareemachan

This is why I don’t have an account.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Came here to see how long before the Sure Jan GIF got posted. 33 and not yet? Sad!

  • What about the money Facebook collected to run these Russian propaganda anti-America ads? Still gonna keep those goddamned tainted Rubles?

Also, what measures is FB putting in place to ensure they stop violating U.S. election laws by running advertisements from foreign governments attempting to interfere with our elections?

    • David J

I doubt he can answer those questions.

      • I doubt he wants to answer those questions, because technically, Facebook broke any number of FEC laws & regs and could be on the hook for serious penalties if we ever have a non-corrupt Justice Dept again.

    • I mean, my god, Zuck just doesn’t fucking get why what his company is doing is wrong.

You are not allowed to run political ads paid for by foreign governments or their agents! It’s not that complicated. The only difference between FB and TV, radio or print is the output medium.

      • TampaDink

That last sentence underlined in red, “Freedom means you don’t have to ask for permission first.” Seems like something ripped from the play book of “grab ’em by the pussy.”

      • DonnaLee

Meanwhile try having a secret group and someone posts nudity.
        “pearl clutching”

        • RoFaWh

Youtube is just as prudish. An utterly charming video of a little baby, wriggling arms and legs while on a white towel, disappeared. My guess is that this naked baby was doing the full frontal nudity thing.

Good god! I can remember the time when a naked baby was a symbol of innocence.

          • DonnaLee

The whole point of secret groups is that nobody can find them unless you know someone in that group. My little sex party group was posting nudes and sex left and right, then fb decided to get all worried about nudity, and boom…fb jail for several of them.

    • Halou

“what measures is FB putting in place to ensure they stop violating U.S. election laws”

Host their servers in foreign countries so that, technically speaking, whatever happens on their site does not happen in the United States, so the United States does not have jurisdiction over it. Technology is not only developing faster than relevant laws can be written, but by the time the legislature has caught up the tech giants have become rich enough to bribe politicians into not passing the relevant laws.

      • This doesn’t entirely hold true. For example, illegal content such as cracked software, ripped videos, and kiddie porn can be gone after even if hosted on foreign servers if U.S. citizens can access it.

It’s been done. One way to go at it is via DNS and ISPs, and frankly, given Facebook is a U.S. based company, warehousing their data overseas does not exempt the company from crimes potentially committed using their platforms.

    • Cattleya1

That money is hidden carefully offshore. He could be in Uruguay long before any rethugs moved against him.

      • wds

Republicans move against him???? ROFLMAO … I’m not going to hold my breath on that one …

  • Hue-Man

O/T Homocon Florian Philippot, VP of the Front National, has quit – after Marine Le Pen took away all his responsibilities! Interesting quote:

“I watched the party struggle to refound itself… But I could see that instead of refounding itself, the party was sliding back to its old ways and being caught up by its old demons.”

My interpretation: “The racist fascists of Marine Le Pen’s father have taken back control.”
Jean-Luc Melanchon, leader of the extreme-left France Insoumise movement, when asked whether Philippot would be welcomed in his party: “No! No! He’s a fascist.”
The real problem is that Le Pen is widely considered to have lost the election through her poor performance in the debate with Macron yet she remains as the leader of the party. Fish rots from the head.

    • Reality.Bites

Wasn’t that kind of a stupid question to ask Melanchon?

It would be like asking Gille Duceppe if they’d be welcome in the BQ when MPs were thrown out of Reform/CCRAP/Conservatives for being too homophobic or racist or anti-bilingualism.

(I know it’s not an exact analogy, since Philippot was thrown out likely for not being bigoted enough, but he’s still no fit for the left wing parties.0

      • Hue-Man

France Insoumise is trying to lure disaffected voters from FN but doesn’t want the fascists. It’s not unlike Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump going after the same unhappy voter – promise to fix the problems in their lives then ignore them once elected.

        • Reality.Bites

Ah, I see the connection then and it’s a fair question.

    • Halou

A photo of Florian Philippot eating couscous was made public a few days ago, apparently failing to eat French food during his off-work time upset more than a few others within the party elites.
Yeah, it really is that pathetic.

How much money do the nearly 54 million Chinese Facebook users generate?

And, how much more money could there be for Facebook and for Mark Zuckerberg personally if that number were to grow by ten times what it currently is? I don’t think the survival of democracy is at the front of his mind, either in America or anywhere else in the world for that matter.
He is only saying this now because he is scared of losing his place in the lucrative American social media market. No company is ever too big to fail.

    • kareemachan

And these people care mightily about making more money. If I was him, I’d buy myself an island (I have a couple in mind…), give shitloads of money to PP and ACLU and such, set up a trust fund for my kid, scholarships for worthy people in a variety of flavors (medical, literary, scientific, culinary, etc), and not look back.

      • Halou

        A Bill Gates approach?
The only reason he gives so much to charity is because he has more money than he knows what to do with. He is not a philanthropist at heart, he’s just not a greedy SOB like some of the other billionaires.

True story- about 9 years ago I was at a party chatting up this bloke,
lots blah blah blah back and forth, he then asked for my user name on Facebook. I figured this was the modern equivalent to ‘what’s ur digits?’
or ‘where do you stay?’ As a lull in the general ambient sound of the party dropped my reply of, “I’m not on Facebook” was heard by everyone there,
and met with gasps and sounds of shock. All heads turned to see the interloper who had dared to breech polite society, violating FB’s sanctity.
      Still got laid though.

    • Gustav2

I had one for a little bit, then Christianist coworkers started trying to convert me, such overt proselytizing would have been harassment at work.
Because I was gay, they didn’t believe I was a Lutheran pastor’s son. It just was not possible I was from the same family that produced another pastor. I was called a liar, etc.

When I unfriended them they became hostile, shunning me at work. lol

If Facebook goes under there will be a few weeks of wailing from the addicts, but as much as a year afterwards nobody will notice it’s absence. I think that is what scares Zuckerberg as much as losing money, the service he provides is superfluous and irrelevant and people in general only use it because we think we need to.

    • katkelly57

I’m glad I never signed up for FB…or any other social media outlet (other than this).

the service Facebook provides might be superfluous to you, but it isn’t to many others who live in out-of-the-way places and use it to keep in touch with family and friends.

      • Cattleya1

Whatever… It created a means of access to a lot of low-information types who where too lazy to fact-check the stuff the Russians were posting. We have a big problem with people in the world who want to hear and read what appeals to them and never look at the other side of the issues. The result is an anti-sense, anti-functional government with a petulant 3-year-old for chief executive.

  • bambinoitaliano

No one can escape unscathed by the shit flinging ape. Not the least those corporation billionaires who sit idly by while the regular folks have to fend for themselves from the tyrant and his fascist regime. Cooperating with House and Intelligence committee only after getting caught is shameful to say the least. What role is this king of social media playing in today dystopia? By aiding and abetting a totalitarian regime dismantling US democracy? Not quite the kind of social network he envision for or did he?

  • Boy Elvis
