Matt Barber’s Site: Christian Members Of The Military Are “Deceived” If They Tolerate Soldiers Of Other Faiths

As regular JMG readers know, vicious anti-LGBT activist Matt Barber used to regularly run columns by open advocates of executing homosexuals and only deleted those columns when we called him out. So it’s no surprise that today he runs a column by someone who literally calls on members of the US armed forces persecute fellow soldiers of different faiths. An excerpt:

Counterfeit Christians in the Armed forces will appeal to the Constitution, and not Christ, and they have no local church home—which means they have no accountability for their souls (Heb. 13:17).This is why so many professing Christian service members will say: “We ‘support everyone’s right’ to practice their faith regardless if they worship a god different from ours because the Constitution protects this right.”

Christian service members who openly profess and support the rights of Muslims, Buddhists, and all other anti-Christian worldviews to practice their religions—because the language in the Constitution permits—are grossly in error, and deceived. Also, is it wrong for a professing Christian service member to say, “I support the rights of all Americans to practice their faith since the Constitution protects their rights?” Absolutely!

The column blathers on for another thousand words to effectively say that only Christians should serve in the military. Oh, but wait – here’s the author’s bio:

Dr. Sonny Hernandez is the Director for Reforming America Ministries. Since 1997, he has served in the Armed Forces, and is currently serving as a US Air Force Reserves Chaplain. He earned a Doctorate from Tennessee Temple University, and is active in public debates on atheism, theological topics, and the Constitution. The opinions expressed here are solely his and do not necessarily represent the views of any government, military, or religious organization. Sonny Hernandez wrote this article as a civilian on his own time on an issue of public interest.

The bolding above is motherfucking mine.

Well, SOMEbody’s “I’m ready to cruise Pride” beard grew in, just in time…

    • UrsusArctos

You didn’t spot him @ Decadence?

      • barracks9

I didn’t. Sadly, I missed all the fun this year (battling some crippling anxiety issues).

        • UrsusArctos

HUGS. Yeah, those crowds and anxiety would have not been a good mix.

          • barracks9

Thanks – it’s a learning process for me, finding out what my social interaction limits. Thankfully, my BF has a lot of experience with it and helps immensely.

        • FAEN

I’m sorry to hear that. Been there, it isn’t fun. Hope you’re better soon.

          • vorpal 😼

Same here! I was housebound for about six months at the age of 21 due to generalized, social, and panic anxiety disorder.

A self-help Cognitive Behavioural Therapy program recommended to me by a psychiatrist (that I was able to do at home at my own pace) changed my life by about 90%, and for the other 10%, there’s Xanax.

          • FAEN

Ugh-I’m so sorry V. Glad you’ve got a handle on it.

          • vorpal 😼

So many people seem to be struggling with anxiety and depression, and they can be very crippling challenges.

With regards to depression in particular, playing the “medication roulette game” where doctors throw a new med at you and you have to try it for at least six weeks to see if it works and you can tolerate the side effects is something I’ve had way too many friends and family have to endure.

My general practitioner wanted me to go that route, but I was very fortunate to find a psychiatrist who was helpful and able to provide me with suggestions for therapy in conjunction with medication, which made a long-term difference.

I still get anxious, especially when faced with completely new situations, but it’s a small fraction of what it used to be. And I want to pass along the gift of that CBT course that the doctor shared with me to others in hopes that it might be as helpful for them as it was for me. 😺

          • FAEN

Yes I agree with you-there seems to be more people dealing with depression and anxiety. I blame Cheeto for some of the spike.

I don’t like medication in general so I deal with it by taking time sometime during the day to writing in my journal and getting some exercise. That seems to help most days. I still get uncomfortable meeting new people(believe it or not I’m rather shy IRL to begin with)but when confronted with that situation I go all in now instead of retreating. It’s scary but I’m trying to minimize the damage depression and anxiety play in my life.

I’m glad that you’re doing better sweet Vorpal 😊. Keep at it.

          • Librarykid

Your CBT must be different from the CBT in the personals.

          • vorpal 😼

Imagine my disappointment when I got the actual course and realized there might have been an acronym mix-up.

          • barracks9

Thanks – it’s been a challenging 12 months or so, but I have hope.

          • FAEN

Were here for you matey and if we can help in any way let us know.

        • vorpal 😼

barracks9, I am so sorry you are having to deal with that :(.

I have a CBT course to overcome anxiety – recommended to me by my psychiatrist – that changed my life about 18 years ago and a dropbox link to it if you think that would be remotely helpful. Additionally, I hope you know you can always hit me up on facebook if you need an understanding person to talk with, commiserate with, vent to, etc.

          • barracks9

Thanks, V – I really appreciate that. I’ll follow up with you on FB this weekend. Dave’s been such a mensch through all this, and it’s good to have other folks to talk to so I’m not leaning on him solely.

I get some sick pleasure from watching giant cysts being lanced and drained on YouTube, and I am definitely not alone in that based on the YouTube comments.

            TMI TMI TMI:
People with Crohn’s tend to be very prone to cysts / abscesses, and I had one once that needed to be lanced and drained. The doctor that came in squealed with delight when he saw, saying that that kind of thing was his favourite part of the job. In the end, we were both happy, because he got his freak show and because I got a whack of Dilaudid and the relief of feeling much better!

          • greenmanTN

Thanks to these comments last night I discovered a new horror on YouTube: Jiggers! Oh, god it was awful. All 5 of the videos I watched were just terrible! (And yes I’ve watched the cyst vids too.)

I believe in having a more open mind and including others who don’t share your faith and having dialogue with them. And just having a pure heart and being a good person can bring you closer to God. • Chucktech

They tried at the AF Academy in Colorado Springs. They got their christian butts spanked over it.

      • Steverino

True story: before I retired, one of my colleagues at the university used to teach military history at the AF Academy in Colorado Springs (he was a “Bird Colonel”), then after retirement he and his wife moved to San Jose, and he made a post-retirement living as an instructor in history. He and his wife were both Pentecostals, but they quit their church because of all the anti-gay crap. He was (is) a good guy, and very gay-friendly (I was always out at work) and I introduced hubby (who also served in the Air Force) to both him and his wife at the grand opening of the new university library back in 2003. Likely very unusual, but there is hope for some of these people.

        • BudClark

I have heard many, many horror stories about the Air Force Academy, and West Point, to a lesser degree.

At West Point, they’re letting that HUGE organ go to rack and ruin because all they have is “tub-thumpers” at the Protestant service. Only about 35% of it is playable, last I heard.

      • Paula

When I was Security Police in the USAF, our squadron commander was a mormon guy. He was supposedly a good mormon, he had a little ethanol problem, though. Some troops would actually call him Brother Lynn, to his face. Many of the senior officers at F.E. Warren AFB were mormons. They seemed to encourage it.
He used to have the chaplain come to our formations and speak with us. They would be there for a couple of hours sometimes and we had to stay there.

  • Joseph Miceli

Wait…so Matt Barber is trying to damage unit cohesion and is jeopardizing the mission? This undermining treasonous asshat mother fucker is beneath contempt and someone besides me should be addressing this to the troops! My old Army sergeant, Staff Sergeant Gill in basic training said, “Listen up you knuckleheads! There’s no black people in the Army. There’s no white people. There’s no brown and no Yellow…there’s only green! You dick weed’s have a problem with that you come see me and I’ll put you on the next bus out of here! Now drop and give me 20!”
I think the only “20” Matt Barber ever gave was 20 slides with his mouth up and down some drunk Marine’s beef popsicle, followed by lots of crying and praying. What a douche.

    • John Ruff

      Don’t forget, he’s Canadian.

It is sort of an open secret that the religious-right have been trying to put people of this ilk in the Chaplain services of all of the military branches as well as religious groups and individuals running the prisoner rehabilitation/training programs within our nation’s prisons. In Florida, the Salvation Army has a “lock” on running the programs that people get assigned to for probationary stuff, and you even pay fees (almost like a co-pay to your doctor’s office) to the Salvation Army for supervising your probation.

These Fundies, especially these anti-American Dominionist bigots, are vastly-overrepresented in the chaplaincy corps. It’s time to just get rid of them and find chaplains that have something to do with the actual troops.

    • Nowhereman

I’d like to see them get away from religious chaplains entirely and instead offer real counselling free of superstitious bias.

      • Jukesgrrl

The Air Force will be the last to go along with that, sad to say. The whole branch is loaded with fundies. I know some people think it’s impossible to achieve a high rank without membership in one of those mega-churches favored in conservative Colorado.

        • The_Wretched

Part of the dominionists goals is take over of the military. They all but had the AirForce under Bush the Lesser (Shrub). And then they had sexual abuse scandals and the MRFF got founded and slapped them around some.

      • Friday

I don’t think that’s practical, and frankly, atheists are a minority. Going around calling other groups ‘superstitious’ from a position of power like that would be kind of the equivalent of what these Fundies want to do. Pretty sure non-religious counsellors are already there, …. any atheist chaplain would still have to listen to and facilitate troops’ religious activities regardless of their religion, in theory. which means it’s the wrong job for Christian missionaries or proselytizers or intolerance-preachers, cause a chaplain’s job involves that kind of stuff for everyone.

I gotta say though. I’m convinced a couple of our regular haters really truly are angry closeted sad people. And outside of Porno Pete, Barber has to be the biggest, and most in denial, closeted of our haters. He’s just so invested in his denial, then there’s the whole boxing/wrestling thing. He always has some weird hyper-masculine talking-point or claim to throw out. He really is creepy in his complete obsession to traditionalist roles of the sexes.

    • RoFaWh

It’s not lgbt that’s the insult, it’s the hypocrisy implicit in various write ups.

  • sandollar_man

Mr. Barber doesn’t understand. Jesus was only a Demi-God. Like Achilles or Perseus, the product of a God and a human.
Why not choose one that was a full throated God, like Thor.
Thor was strong, oil up, and had a big hammer. What’s not to like?
And he would never submit to being humiliate by being nailed to a cross.
He acted like a real man. He would never be seen looking down on others with the sad pathetic look of a loser, like Jesus does, hanging from that torture device.

    • grada3784

But didn’t Thor do a stint in drag?

      • sandollar_man

I was being a bit sardonic. It’s just my way of attempting to shock people into realizing how all religions can cloud our reasoning into seeing things in an inverted way.
Most religions invert reality and then shove it back in our faces, to make us stagger backwards. Like when they claim virgin birth, or life after death.
It appears that this Mr. Barber character, is a master of that inversion tactic.

Odin sacrificed himself to himself by hanging himself in a tree. If you know anything about. Efievsl poetry, a tree was often used as a metaphor for a cross.

      Lityle in Christianity is original.

That TN Temple school was in my city (Chattanooga) before they went out of business. It was a fundamentalist Baptist school that had feuding factions and was in decline for years. They considered Southern Baptists to be liberal. And the people that went there were just plain weird! Women had to wear dresses, they couldn’t go to movies – “old school” religious shit. It made Jerry Falwell’s school (Liberty) look liberal by comparison.

It was in a rough part of town. It was a bunch of white fundies gated off from a neighborhood that’s mostly black and latino. I drove by it on my way to and from work every day. Now it’s just a bunch of empty inner city buildings – kind of an urban “ghost town”.

Anyway, the people that went there were just really strange. You know the type – street preachers standing on corners downtown yelling that you’re going to hell. I’m not surprised that the dude who said this went there. Yeah, they were also very anti-gay.

    • Jukesgrrl

Thank you for clarifying that. When I read the term PhD I laughed and wondered what kind of school that could be. Glad to know they’re out of business.

      • RoFaWh

What kind of school? The kind where every degree has its price.

    • Cackalaquiano

Sounds exactly like Bob Jones University (really). Unfortunately, they’re still around.

  • Nowhereman

I think that most military members understand that the rights that they are defending apply to ALL American citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs or race. Any white supremacist and/or christian nationalist serving in the military should be barred from re-enlistment if not kicked out summarily.

  • BudClark

Somebody ought to wash his mouth out with Grandma’s Lye Soap, and then take him out to the woodshed and beat his worthless bare ass with a razor strop till he can’t sit down for a week.

    Back to basics!

    • Ben in Oakland

Why bother with the strop? Just use the razor.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Yes, because harassing other soldiers about their faith is totes good for unit cohesion and discipline. smh

  • Robincho

Universities don’t just “go out of business”, do they?…

    • RoFaWh

Some legitimate institutions of higher education have, indeed, gone out of business. This is usually the result of a financially naive board of trustees.

Happens to art galleries too. The Corcoran Gallery in DC went tits up a few years ago. Very sad; I took sculpture classes there, part of their Saturday morning art school for school students up to age 16.

      Beautiful beaux arts building.

      • Robincho

Thanx. Then you must know about the “Salon Doré” and art collection of Senator William Andrews Clark, yes?…

Tennessee Temple was founded in 1946 under the leadership and vision of Dr. Lee Roberson. As the pastor of a prominent Southern Baptist church, Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Roberson saw the need to train people for ministry through higher education. Believing that God was leading him to act upon this need, he began an evening Bible institute which would eventually blossom into a Bible college and a liberal arts college. Later, a seminary would be added.

    Apparently God saw things differently.

Because, obviously, the Prince of Peace wants a massive army of fanatics only. Or something.

  • vorpal 😼

I say let fundamentalist Christian soldiers band together and lead the first-wave siege into battle, armed with their prayers like true Christian Warriors(TM).

Save the weapons and defensive equipment – which were developed through science – for those who believe in science.

  • fahvel

granted, your turd in the white house has opened doors giving permission to the lowest of the low – all of whom should be seen as non entities but what is puzzling in the usa, land of the frightened, gluttonous and hateful, is the number of god fearing low life xians who use a nice historical figure to support their sickness and evil mindedness.

  • Halou

Have the guy’s superiors been notified of his “opinions”?

    • Do you think they’d do anything if they were?

      • Kelly Lape

Yes. Military Chaplains take an oath to administer to all faiths. His expressed opinion contradicts that oath and threatens unit cohesion.

The Air Force in particular has been egregious in flouting “Christianity” over other religions so it won’t go over well.
