Cardinal Timothy Dolan Hits Back At Steve Bannon

Politico reports:

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon’s assertion that Roman Catholic bishops “need illegal immigrants” is so “preposterous,” “insulting” and “ridiculous” that it doesn’t merit a response, Cardinal Timothy Dolan said Thursday.

“You might imagine I was rather befuddled to see it,” Dolan said. “I don’t really wanna care to go into what I think is a preposterous and rather insulting statement that the only reason we bishops care for immigrants is for the economic because we want to fill our churches and get more money. That’s insulting and that’s just so ridiculous that it doesn’t merit a comment.”

“This is not an issue of Catholic doctrine because it comes from the Bible itself, and we Catholics are people of the book,” Dolan said. “And the Bible is so clear — so clear — that to treat the immigrant with dignity and respect, to make sure that society is just in its treatment of the immigrant, is biblical mandate.”

You may recall that Dolan, who gave the invocation at Trump’s inauguration, was one of the loudest voices against same-sex marriage.

    Then, it becomes hilarious.

That’s insulting and that’s just so ridiculous that it doesn’t merit a comment.

But it “doesn’t merit a comment”.

Almost Trumpian in the ability to talk out of both sides of his mouth.

    • GayOldLady

Like everyone in the hierarchy of the church he cannot control himself.

      • Joe in PA

Indeed. Hey GOL, this is O/T, but I was just watching a Weather Channel segment online…it showed Tenn. in the path! I’m sure you are on top of this, when I saw that… Yikes, TN?

        • GayOldLady

Good morning!! Yep, I’m all over it! I mentioned a few days ago that most hurricanes that hit FL or the Gulf usually end up in TN. We even got the remnants of Harvey.

          • Joe in PA

Dang, tornadoes AND hurricanes. 🙂 Must be all that clean living you are doing. 🙂

          • GayOldLady

Well, we are the “buckle” of the bible belt, so there must be some clean living going on somewhere in TN. And yes, this storm will bring us tornadoes and torrential rain and flash flooding. I can hardly wait.

          • Gustav2

Again, we in Ohio thank you for your service.

            {ducking}

          • GayOldLady

We’re proud to lend our hills and mountains as tropical storm killers to preserve the upper Ohio Valley and Northeast. Never mind that many of us will likely spend much of next week in our “safe places” hiding from tornado warnings. We’re used to it.

          • Gustav2

            Hang in there.

          • GayOldLady
          • Paula

            I hate when that happens!

          • Duh-David

I have snow on my back porch, in Ohio, this morning. But no tornados.

          • GayOldLady

Are you serious? We had temps in the low 50’s last night, which is very unseasonable for us, but snow?

          • LatrinaDiBucca

If TN gets to be the “buckle”, what does that make MS? Kneepads?

I was so ignorant when I was in the Army. A hurricane sent shreds of itself over Ft. Meade, MD and dumped so much water, hail and lightning, it was amazing to me. We don’t have much weather in Socal.

Years later, I found out that bad series of T-storms was due to a hurricane farther south.

          • prixator

I live in Toronto and we received the remnants of both Katrina and Sandy (other ones as well, but those two are probably the most well-known in this century).

Some of the earlier models showed Irma petering out and heading this way, too.

Rich coming from a guy who bent over backwards working to elect Trump. Guess what, Fat Timmy, you own this, sorry you don’t like it.

      • Gerry Fisher

That comment from one of Trump’s personal lawyers the other day was fascinating. One statement was about how he’s worked to fight racism and sexism (or some such), and then a few sentences later he talked about his support for Trump (thereby furthering racism and sexism). It’s as if going to a charity event or cutting a check once in a while excuses propping up leaders and a system that perpetuates the evil that the charity events are fighting. Cause massive damage…apply a band aid…cause more massive damage…add another band aid. “I apply band aids, so you can’t criticize me! I’m a NICE guy, one of the GOOD guys!”

People seem unable to see the hypocrisy and the actual evil in what they’re doing. They’re waaaay too busy making money and holding onto power.

      • Robincho

And bent over forwards to accommodate altarboy cock…

        • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

Interesting. I never thought of priests as ‘bottoms.’

    • Uncle Mark

If that is sooo insulting, then wouldn’t that be called heresy? Wouldn’t the answer to such insults be EXCOMMUNICATION…or are you afraid of Bannon and his flying monkeys?

  • Joseph Miceli

Oh Timmy, can’t both be true? …and besides, we all know you Bishops simply LOVE those “delicious” brown alter boys. They don’t know English so they can’t go to the police as easily, now can they?

  • Gustav2

When did Roman Catholic dogma start following the Bible?

    Asking for a Lutheran.

    • Joseph Miceli

It clearly says in the Bible that Mary, the Co-Redemtress of Man, told Peter to build a city in Italy to store a horde of art treasures so the poor wouldn’t get them grubby.

      • Michael White

as much as I hate to defend the RCs the Vatican has preserved thousands of years of art and writings. Sure the columns of Caracalla’s baths that are in St. Peter’s were stolen, but what would have happened to them? What would have happened to the art history heritage if the money grubbing clergy has not been taking care of the treasures? They are open to the public and various collections sent to museums around the world on loan. Scholars have access to invaluable manuscripts. Just sayin

        • Bluto

You have a point but how much of their plunder is stolen goods? The Egyptian obelisk in st petey’s square for instance, originally stolen from Heliopolis by Caligula. The vatican refuses to return it.
On 2nd thought, Caligula seems an appropriate role model for the church.

          • grada3784

You don’t want institutions or countries returning stolen goods now. After all, just think what the US might have to return.

          • Michael White

I am sure a lot of it was stolen goods. Much of the Egyptian stuff was looted by the Romans before Christianity started. But we are 1600 years since the fall of Rome in 476. So the Vatican has the stuff. Can’t flood the art world with it. How do you place a value on it. But is is there for all of us to enjoy The church has been VERY crooked Medici Borgia and many we are not aware of their crimes. But I appreciate being able to Brie the treasures.

        • Joseph Miceli

So….they did something good inadvertently out of Greed. Got ya.

          • GayOldLady

Oh, all of the inadvertent good the church has done, let me count the ways. The art they’ve stolen over the centuries is being preserved for posterity, their posterity.

          • Joseph Miceli

Well, they could sell one Michelangelo painting and feed Africa for a year, but they don’t want to break up the set.

        • BearEyes

the vatican has also destroyed or ordered destroyed many works that don’t fit their narrative. Many of DaVinci’s works were lost this way.

          • clay

            The Library at Alexandria.

          • Michael White

That was destroyed but the Islamic terrorists of their day.

          • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

But back then it was modern art.

          • Gerry Fisher

            Selective art appreciation, eh?

          • Steve Teeter

Not to mention the records and histories of all the Central and South American empires they conquered. Obviously the work of the devil, so into the fire with it all!

          • BearEyes

so much history and knowledge lost.

        • TampaZeke

Yeah, and you could say the same about Nazis.

      • Bluto

The nazi is correct, the church isn’t supporting immigrants because it’s the right thing to do. They do it for the money.

Cow-tipping: Not as pain-free as you seem to think!

          • trouble94114

It’s a myth that cows sleep standing up. And assuming you could safely approach the rear flank of a standing cow (asleep or not…the tipper is much more likely to get a hoof to the head than the tippee being pushed over sideways)

The actual physics involved in forcing a cow over, indicates it’s extremely unlikely that a single person could accomplish it, and the possibility that two people could accomplish this is only slightly less unlikely. And those calculations make the assumption that the cow makes no attempt to brace itself to counteract the force pushing the cow.

Funny what you can learn in 4 years at an engineering school that also teaches Animal Husbandry and Agronomy. Usually this is an in class first quarter physics lesson on a Monday morning when half of the class is hung over and one of the hung over guys has a hoof shaped gash on his head.

Bannon is a disgusting, bigoted asshole but even a broken clock is right twice a day and in this instance he’s right. The ONLY reason the Catholic Church supports immigration is for self preservation; to keep from going extinct in the USA. They need to replace the people fleeing the pews and they need to replace them with people who are more likely than Americans to support the church’s dark ages dogma.

Of course the Church does have an interest in of wanting to get more homophobes and misogynists in the pews and *voting booths* so they don’t want immigrants rendered *illegal.*

Th infighting’s interesting, though, it’s almost like Bannon and Putin have decided to make things as destabilized as they can before Drumph gets the boot.

  • DaveMiller135

I’m pleased to see this. While I won’t allow that the Catholics are actually trying to walk the talk on opposing same sex rights, until they go after adulterers too, this is an attempt to look at other, possibly unpopular, political stances, according to what their holy book says. Hey, it’s not support for “judge not, lest ye be judged,” or praying in silence and away from view, but it’s a start.
