Sessions Opens Federal Probe Into Charlottesville

NBC News reports:

The Department of Justice said late Saturday it has opened a civil-rights investigation into a deadly car-ramming incident that witnesses said targeted counter-protesters at a white nationalist and alt-right rally in Virginia.

“The violence and deaths in Charlottesville strike at the heart of American law and justice,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said. “When such actions arise from racial bigotry and hatred, they betray our core values and cannot be tolerated.”

The FBI said in a statement Saturday that it, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia have opened a civil rights investigation into the car striking the crowd of people. Sessions said the federal investigation “will have the full support of the Department of Justice.” “Justice will prevail,” he said.

Late last night on CNN, former Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli argued that Virginia was “well-equipped” to handle such a civil rights investigation on their own, noting that the state had prosecuted the Beltway Snipers without federal aid. One of the killers was executed in 2009 and the other is serving a life sentence.

  • crewman

Of course Sessions opened a probe. He needs to get to the bottom of who dented that poor man’s car.

And why only one bad hombre was killed…

Holding the scales of justice and the mirror that will be required for this case is beyond the capabilities of this little elf.

  • Danieruw

I thought some of Sessions core values ARE racial bigotry and hatred!

  • Leo

Sessions: But but I don’t wanna!!!!

Oh and fuck Cuccinelli, who’s worse than all of them.

    • clay

Cuccinelli is playing into Trump’s “one all sides” bullshit.

    • Ninja0980

Thank goodness that POS never became governor.

Is he including the troopers in the helicopter because they were only there because of the white riot, or does he know something that’s not publicly released? green lasers?

It’s ok to be filled with hateful rage but how dare they do it in front of a camera!

    • Gigi

A guy on FB said this: The counter protestors wouldn’t have gotten hurt if they hadn’t tried to silence the white supremacists. They were trying to take away their first amendment right to free speech.

      • Uncle Mark

Funny, I don’t recall seeing any of the anti-protestors packing firearms versus the Nazis to take away their 1st Amendment Rights or to intimidate. How many people have the anti-Nazi protestors killed?

      • Acronym Jim

Classic and obvious concern trolling. The FB guy doesn’t mention the counter-protesters right to free speech. In fact, it he doesn’t want them to exercise it at all. Funny that.

      • bkmn

They think free speech means speech with no consequences – of course they are completely wrong.

        • Gigi

One of the Nazis at the hate march got fired after he was outed to his boss. Free Speech that, loser!

  • Ninja0980

Bottom line, if you want to be racist, do it via voter id laws, drug laws etc like I do.

    • another_steve

      Lol. So true.

Jeff Sessions investigating racially-motivated hate crimes is like my cat investigating whether the United States of America should ban catnip.

You make a good point but I don’t think that was the point he was trying to make.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

The Federal probe by Jeff Sessions is, “How can I become a member in good standing again?”

    • Uncle Mark

Shouldn’t Sessions recuse himself from this too….being a proven life-long White racist, himself?

  • abqdan

Since this was a terrorist attack, DHS should be investigating. Did this terrorist act alone? Is there a terror cell operating in Ohio that planned this action? What are the politcal and other affiliations of this terrorist…. Oh wait – white Christian. Sorry, it was just a traffic accident.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I hope people send him a lot of complaints.

    • Uncle Mark

This morning they had Tom Bossert (Drumpf appt’d Homeland Security Advisor) on CNN. The man was turning himself into a pretzel praising Drumpf & trying very hard not to condemn Nazis. He was angry & insulting to Tapper before begrudgingly condemning Nazis and the KKK. Drumpf and his cabinet are infested with Nazis/White Supremists and sycophants.

      • Hank

It took him 1 1/2 minutes to AVOID saying the words White/Supremacy, Neo-Nazi, Alt-Right!!! So much for the security from Homeland Security!!!

        • Uncle Mark

And it took 15 minutes of shaming by Tapper before he begrudgingly condemned those hate groups. Of course Bossert insulted Tapper several times before caving.

We need to purge the White House of this infestation of deplorables

    • Adam Schmidt

And yeah, I agree. We should be treating this as a terrorist attack.

I’m tired of the changing lexicon the Nazis and bigots and fascists keep using to try to play word games under the radar. Their latest is “cosmopolitan” which to most folks just means urban and perhaps sophisticated. To them it means mixed-race and undesirable diversity. And it’s this White House and it’s administration that keeps using these buzz words.

So I’m calling it as I see it… no more “alt-right”, it’s Nazis. I’m not going to play the damn game on their playing field with their rules. Fuck that! When a guy flies a Confederate or Nazi flag, he’s a traitor. Only traitors would fly the flag of a people who fought this country. Those Confederate memorials, they’re memorials to traitors. Bigoted, racist, slave-owning traitors. When people from the “alt-right” march bearing emblems showing literal fascia, they’re fascists.

And when it comes down to it, fascists and Nazis and traitors… they’re all enemies of democracy and the United States and need to be treated as such.

    • clay

Trump’s team has defunded the domestic terrorism office in the FBI.
As far as they’re concerned, the only terrorists are foreign-born.

  • Gigi

Some asshat on FB said this about yesterday’s tragedy:

“Now they (Liberals) have tried to prevent the crazy-KKK from using their first amendment Free Speech and because of that one of those loons drives a car and kills this poor woman. If you let the loons speak then they go away and disappear into obscurity.”

According to him, the KKK has the right to spew hate and we just have to sit back an allow it. If we don’t and someone gets hurt, it’s our fault for trying to “silence” them. We should just ignore them and they’ll go away. Makes sense because that’s what happened in Nazi Germany.

    • SoCalGal20

      A+ victim-blaming, FB douchebag!

      • Uncle Mark

Victim blaming…it’s what men with no testicular fortitude default to. “It’s YOUR fault that I’m acting so badly & violently. i have no responsibility or free will in this.”

  • TrueWords

Jeff Sessions wants to appear tough but alas he is weak and ineffective

Ken Cuccinelli cares only about the Bible and upholding it

  • AdamTh

    Sessions investigating civil rights abuse?

    Can you say “W-h-i-t-e W-a-s-h”?

    • Adam Schmidt

The civil rights investigation is to determine if they can bring federal level hate crime charges on top of everything else. Now, whether with Sessions in charge they’ll sweep as much of it as they can under the rug… that’s a different thing.

    • Bluto

      Emphasize on white.
If any good can be wrung out of yesterdays horror is that it gave the nazi movement a helleva black eye. Keep punching every damn one of ’em into obscurity. That’s up to sane people cuz the executive branch is fully aligned with the fascists.

      • Silver Badger

Here I was thinking white trash with the emphasis on trash.

        • Bluto

          hmmm, you have a point.

    • canoebum

The only conclusion we can expect from the Sessions DoJ is that the counter protesters incited the Nazis to violence. They’ll need to be rounded up to prevent future violence at Nazi gatherings.

The use of the words ‘Jeff Sessions’ and ‘civil rights’ in the same sentence is ludicrous on its face.

  • Todd20036

I think we can officially say that our “President” is a Nazi.

He’d be ok with 1930s Germany slaughtering Jews.

And once the judiciary branch falls and bigotry is enshrined into law, it will be time to run

    • Bj Lincoln

      I want to run now.

      • Silver Badger

I may want to run, but it will never happen. I’m going to stay and fight to my last breath because I’m just that perverse.

      • OdieDenCO

I’ve been running for months in work boots and jeans just to get use to the weight. If I need to go guerrilla I’ll be prepared.

    • Uncle Mark

It’s amazing how the racists actually refuse to acknowledge (or express some disappointing realization) that Jared & Ivanka are Jews. It’s the same way, so many of them choose to ignore the crimes and other horrible things our fake-President does and says. So many are no different than the Germans, who turned a blind eye to their leader’s holocaust. Even horrible Stephen Miller (born to Jewish parents) is among the Nazis, using their dog whistles and code words. (Did he NOT hear the anti-Semitic chants in Virginia? Does he think that he will somehow be spared their hate?)

  • BobSF_94117

Uh… shouldn’t this be a terrorism investigation? There was at least one report (I make no claim about its veracity) that he had people helping to direct him out of the area after the attack.

Not that one can’t have simultaneous terror and civil-rights investigations.

  • StillALiberal

I am correct in assuming that POTUS can only pardon people convicted of breaking Federal Law but not State Laws ? Maybe, that’s the reason why Sessions wants the DoJ involved ?

  • Ken M

I know it should be obvious, but it would still be nice for them to clarify just whose Civil Rights they are investigating.

    • Talisman

The suspect’s, of course…those people were clearly oppressing his right to drive wherever he wants!

sessions is part of the problem as a white racist; so even if the probe finds something, he will chalk it up to “boys will be boys”. LOCK THEM UP!

Why not? The police often investigate themselves!

      • Rocco

  • Gerry Fisher

I’ll bet that they’ll hyper focus on the driver of the car. He’s an acceptable, expendable scapegoat.

Yup. They will ignore the causes & instigators of this.

The sole purpose for Sessions to interject his sad elven opinion into this matter is to exonerate the Nazis.

    Husband: Into Trump’s dick size?

Me: No. They’d have to find it first, and that could take years.

Sessions will probably sayd that the deceased was jay walking

I imagine by the time I post this, the so called investigation will be over. Nothing to see here, nothing to see here.

  • ian

I posted this yesterday, made a few changes.
I hope this becomes a watershed moment. Trump and his supporters and enablers own this, and every registered republican bears a share of responsibility. I know there are people who will say you can’t smear all republicans with the same brush, just as you can’t smear all muslims because of the terrorist acton of a few radical extremists. To that I would say, no. You can’t smear all Americans because of the terrorist actions of a few radical extremists. The GOP? Well, Islamic terrorists also have their political enablers. Hamas has been accused of supporting terrorism, as has the government of Iran, and the Saudi’s, and I now would add the GOP and their members. Sure a few republicans have spoken out against this. Too little too late. They stood by and enabled trump. They regularly appear on Fox blowing the racist dog whistle (and fox is just as responsible for this). The GOP has done nothing but currie favor with nazis for votes for decades. If you are a republican and you’re genuinely horrified at what your party has become, you can leave it. It won’t kill you to do so. And if you can’t go against your party, well then you may as well admit you are ok with this. No more excuses. No more equivocating. Time to decide if you’re an American first or not. Speaking out is not enough. Time to stand up for America. Or just slap on your swastika be be honest about it.
