NORTHERN IRELAND: Game Of Thrones Star Kristian Nairn May Enter Politics To Fight For Marriage Equality

The Belfast Telegraph reports:

Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn could swap the stage for the political arena after becoming frustrated with the lack of progress on equality issues such as same-sex marriage. The 6ft 10in actor, DJ and entrepreneur from Lisburn, who is gay, has been nominated for MTV’s Tearjerker award after his character Hodor’s iconic death scene in the last series of HBO’s hit fantasy drama.

“I really don’t understand why we’re the only little enclave of the country that can’t do it,” he told the Belfast Telegraph. “I hope that we can come into line with the rest of Europe and the rest of the United Kingdom and Ireland. “There’s so much other horrible s*** happening in the world at the minute, I think it’s the least of their worries. I think we need to get it sorted out as soon as possible.

Nairn, whose mum works for the Rainbow Project, a support service for gay and bisexual men, says he finds it “very saddening” to hear about continuing cases of homophobia throughout the world and the opposition to same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland.

“People are so lovely in this country. I love coming home and then when you hear something like that, and it’s being decided for us by people who I feel are completely outdated in their views and are perhaps not making decisions for the right reasons, it’s saddening,” he added.

It is so nice when the characters you love are played by actors that are lovable too.

Later in the Belfast Telegraph article Kristian Nairn says he won’t enter NI politics now, but perhaps later. That’s a pity, because the province will vote in the UK-wide general election on 8 June, and on that date, there will almost certainly be another Northern Ireland general election for their Assembly.

Politics in Northern Ireland is deadlocked since the 2 March general election took marriage equality champoins Sinn Féin to one seat less than the (protestant) Democratic Unionist Party, a political earthquake since unionists have dominated NI politics since Irish partition in the early 1920s. Since the beginning of inter-party talks after the 2 March election, there is still no realistic possibility of the power-sharing Executive being reformed. The Westminster Northern Ireland Secretary is almost certain to call another Assembly election. His only other option is the return of direct rule from Westminster.

One of the major political mysteries in Northern Ireland is why the Belfast High Court judge has still not reached any decision on the Human Rights applications by Northern Irish and British LGBT couples on the right to marry in the province. Their cases were heard in December 2015, and the judge said they would get a decision soon after Christmas.

      That was two Christmases ago.

Never watched Game of Thrones. Loved Hodor in the books.

For the first couple seasons it’s probably the most faithful book adaptation I’ve ever seen.
