JACKSONVILLE: Liberty Counsel Organizes Hate Rally Urging Mayor To Veto New LGBT Rights Ordinance

Via press release from the Florida Family Policy Council:

Liberty Counsel, a national public interest constitutional law firm with offices in Florida, released a three-page legal memorandum today documenting the fact that Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry can still legally veto the Human Rights Ordinance (HRO) 2017-15. The HRO, passed by the City Council last week, can still be vetoed by Mayor Curry because it is not final law until after the next City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 28, 2017.

The research and memo was prepared by attorney Roger Gannam, Assistant Vice President of Legal Affairs and long-time Jacksonville resident, in light of the misinformation being distributed to the media by the mayor’s office. The Office of General Counsel has erroneously claimed that the HRO is final law because it passed with a super majority and the mayor is unable to veto it. The legal memo clearly demonstrates this is incorrect after a review of the City Charter provisions.

Because Mayor Curry still has the legal option of vetoing the HRO, hundreds of Jacksonville women are gathering this Wednesday, February 22, 2017, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm for a rally and press conference outside on the sidewalks surrounding City Hall and in Hemming Plaza. At 12:30, various women are scheduled to make public statements to the media urging the Mayor to veto the HRO because the law would force them and their daughters to shower, dress and use bathrooms with men.

I don’t understand why christians are filled with so much hate…..oh wait, i forgot about controlling the weak minded and tax/work free living.

Edit: Whip people into a lather and they will throw gobs of cash at you for doing nothing at all, kind of like the HRC.

    • Charles M Taylor

This particular bunch doesn’t seem to understand that this sort of thing doesn’t help recruit people to become Christians.

      • T-Batwoman

I think you are right, just like drumpf supporters, hate sells to a small niche crowd but not the masses.

        • you have no idea how tempted i am, heh, to start a “church.” i write good sermons.

Unfortunately that worked with just enough voters to get the electoral college win for Donnie…

It’s a cult-like tactic that consolidates their control over their hardcore followers, though: the more they make people isolate themselves from civility, the more they can profess that the world outside the cult is ‘persecuting’ them.

We start with Key West, then take Miami, Ft. Laundrydale, and the Magic Kingdom, but Jacksonville is even scarier (to them)– pretty soon they’ll have lost the red-neck riviera, and they know it.

    • Charles M Taylor

It would please me to no end to see Pride Week happening in places like Panama City and Destin.

      • clay

You know we would crush the competition in a Panama City Pride boat parade. “White Pride” doesn’t stand a chance!

    • Dean

The so-called “Redneck Riviera” is the geographical area from about Tarpon Springs up to Pensacola on the west coast. Jacksonville is in what is referred to as the “first coast.” They will never lose the “Redneck Riviera” due to demographics. Not enough black folks or non-Xtians.

  • LovesIrony

    ha, kamakazee mayor he aint.

  • james1200

“Hundreds of women will gather.” Where, in your head? Can’t wait for the doctored photos of these crowds of nonexistent women storming city hall, like the photos they doctored of the Peruvian rally they held for Kim “cuntzilla” Davis.

    • Lars Littlefield

    • HZ81

He means tens of women will mobility-scooter.

      • james1200

lol! It would be a victory to get to ten.

        • HZ81

Really would be Kinda like how One Million Moms is probably an obese chick named Barb whose husband goes “camping” with his “buds” too much.

  • Moebym of the Returners

It isn’t a “Women’s Rally” that throws transwomen under the bus.

    • Friday

Everything the Christian Right says is backwards. 🙂

  • Steve Smith

I’m in Jacksonville for work this week and could help troll the attendees or counter-protest. Who should I contact?

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Hold it, they have time to march when the new TV show ‘Teacher’s’ makes s-x jokes and doesn’t treat teachers with respect? Where are their priorities?

    • Tawreos

Up their asses alongside their heads.

  • TheManicMechanic

Too many Christians, not enough lions or crosses.

  • JDS
    • kaydenpat

That may be a slight improvement.

  • LovesIrony

another group wandering around asking, “where’s the fried snickers on a stick”

  • Bj Lincoln

    Cough…cough…bullshit cough….cough….dumb ass….cough.
They will be lucky to get 10 women to come out to bitch about something that never affected them before. Trans people still pee where they want and need to. They really don’t want my trans son in the womens room. He had top surgery last year and not one person has given him any shit since. I couldn’t be more happy or proud of him.

    • T-Batwoman

You are an amazing parent! Thank you!!

    • Marti386

But 10 women will become hundreds of women thanks to “alternative facts”. 😛

      • McSwagg

If Jeebus can multiply the feeshes and the loabs, he can multiply the wimminfolk too. Who are we to doubt?

        • Marti386

          Yay for alternative facts! 😀

  • Robert Anthony

  • David Walker

What lousy fucking “people” these assholes are.

  • Ninja0980

I imagine this venture will be as successful as his defense of Kim Davis was.

    • kaydenpat

But you’re forgetting that hundreds of thousands marched for Kim D in Peru. Shame on you!

  • David Vandygriff

Gannam has NOT lived in Jacksonville in over 3 years. He currently lives in the Orlando area which offers the same protections just enacted in Jacksonville.

  • Tawreos

I can’t wait for the day when all of the creeps over at Liberty Counsel are out of a job.

    • there’s *always* going to be adversaries in this war.

      • Tawreos

Yes, but sooner or later they will down to the level of the crazy homeless guy that yells at pigeons.

    • kaydenpat

Everything makes them so miserable that I can’t imagine that they won’t find something to gripe about and thus stay in business.

  • M Jackson

    Aerial crowd photography please.

  • Rick

Attendance maybe well reach into the low teens! Like eleventeen! Or maybe even twelveteen!

  • kaydenpat

“because the law would force them and their daughters to shower, dress and use bathrooms with men.”

Straight up lie. Transgender women are women. Period. This law won’t allow men into women’s bathrooms. Our side really needs to push back hard on all this lying.

  • scorpiomike

How do you discuss such an issue with people who start by saying that trans women are men? You don’t! You tell them to Fuck Off! And if necessary, take them to court.

  • The_Wretched

“the HRO”, I’m sorry, was it hard to say “Human Rights Ordinance”? We wouldn’t be trying to bury that detail would we Florida Family Policy Council

  • RoFaWh

If there were no lgbt people and no Messican immigrants (legal or illegal), what on earth would the fascists have to whine about?

    • djcoastermark

      Moose and Lambs.

  • Robert Conner
  • Richard B

The religious bigots are focused on spreading unfounded fear and playing up the “Trans in the bathroom” card for any new LGBT rights ordinances or laws being considered.

  • Dan Merkan

This whole press release from the Liberty Council is astounding. This hate group from Orlando seems to be playing loose with reality. The Jacksonville Human Rights Ordinance update was passed on February 14 and became law around 7:30pm that night. These are the facts as understood by Jacksonville’s Mayor, City our Council, our General Counsel, our LGBT community, and our Business, Civic and a majority of local faith leaders. For Liberty Council to rally their people to encourage a mayoral veto that can no longer happen shows the lengths to which they attempt to manipulate their uninformed followers.

  • David Wickham

He can draw little hearts all over the bill but if it passed with a super-majority, his veto would mean squat because it would be overridden.

  • Bill

Where did he get his legal degree? This became law at 7:30 on Feb 14 when it passed by a 2 to 1 margin, making it unable to be vetoed.

  • Franciscan

Correction to the press release: Don’t they mean “an unconstitutional law firm” that is “opposed to the public interest”?

  • olandp

Who is going to be speaking? Wonder if I’ll know any of them, if so…

  • Avenger280

Does that asshole ever blink? His eyes just…..

  • BudClark

WOW! Dude got ahold of some REALLY bad drugs THIS time!

  • Gregg

Roger Gannam does not live in Jacksonville. He moved to Orlando several years ago and only shows up in Jax when the HRO issue comes back up. He was Kim Davis’ lawyer in Kentucky.
