Defense Nominee James Mattis Evades Questions On Whether LGBTs Should Be Allowed To Serve [VIDEO]

Josh Israel reports at Think Progress:

At his confirmation hearing on Thursday, Retired General James Mattis — President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be secretary of defense — refused to say whether he believes women and LGBT people should be able to serve in the military.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) noted during questioning that Mattis had previously said allowing women and men to serve together was like mixing different types of arrows, and asked whether he still believes that. Mattis responded that he did not plan to make any changes unless someone brings a problem to his attention.

“I’m looking for military readiness,” he said, adding that he has “no plan to oppose women.” Noting additional comments he had made about gay and lesbians in the military, Gillibrand then asked, “ Do you believe that openly serving homosexuals, along with women in combat units, is undermining our force?”

As you’ll see in the clip, Mattis dodged the question again and again. Hit the link for more. Kudos to my Senator for pressing the issue.

  • Joe in PA

I’ve never mixed an arrow…just saying. Oh…wait, she said “eros”…well that either.

    • Treant

I have never put an arrow into the “proper” quiver. But none of the quivers have complained.

    • Nowhereman

I don’t get that whole “arrow” thing either. No doubt he doesn’t think that non-whites should serve with whites either.

  • Gustav2

I have no plan to make changes, but if someone (a man) brings me a (wink wink) problem…

  • mikeinftl

    Hello, they are already serving.

    • Bared Bear

Not if they close their eyes and stick their fingers in their ears… then it’s like Jesus came and sat on their laps and kissed them on their lips with his beard lightly scruffing all their sins away.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

For a second there, you had me converting

        • Bared Bear

I have had a lifelong habit of sexualizing Jesus… ever since I was just an itty bitty gay boy. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I suspect it’s the beard.

          • karmanot

We all have our cross to bear!

          • Mihangel apYrs

as long as you don’t cross bears

          • Craig Howell

            Or arm them.

          • Goodboy

We all have our ways to worship. Just don’t do it out in public.

          • FAEN

Oh it’s the beard and the abs. Woof!

      • karmanot
    • Nowhereman

Exactly. Gay people have served for as long as armies have existed, and women are often on the front lines of wars whether by choice or not.

    • Todd20036

And many of those serving have upwards of a million dollars in training invested in them.
Firing them would not benefit anything or anyone.

      • NO MORE GOP!

        But, but, but…. Jesus!

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Yup, I’m so glad America dodged the bullet that was Hillary Clinton. /s

    • Frostbite

Yeah, those damn emails would have been the end of us all!

I think this is all because she failed to forward that lucky email to 10 friends within the next hour.

    • Treant

But her e-mails, Jean-Marc! Her e-mails could have been mildly annoying!

      • Bared Bear

I know. There could’ve been a chain email in there… you know how annoying those are? … and that warning about not forwarding them to 10 others… That shit keeps me up at night.

        • Treant

You mean she didn’t forward it? That, like, got a puppy kicked somewhere!

        • Goggles

      • JCF

My trial balloon re Greta Van Susteren ended today: “Remember, she had that server in her basement!” Yeah, what’s a little TREASON compared to that?

        • Treant

Treason is the reason for deceivin’!

    • Michael

It’s unforunate Democrats chose the candidate who poll after poll proved Clinton didn’t fare as well as Sanders agains Trump.

      • Dwight Williamson

Don’t you think we as a community need to find ways to protect our rights, instead of rehashing woulda coulda shoulda.?

        • unsavedheathen

Recognizing a blunder of historic magnitude for what it is and trying our best not to repeat it will go a long way toward protecting our rights. Can we not learn from our mistakes as well? I’d rather not repeat it come 2020.

          • Dazzer

The strongest response anyone can make is to make sure that the vote is gotten out for 2018.

          • Bill_Perdue

Voting is for naive and silly people like you.

          • FAEN

So am I to understand you didn’t vote in this past election??

          • Bill_Perdue

            Democrats = Republicans.

        • That One

Yes, and one of those ways IS rehashing the woulda coulda shouda so that the ones who are still plugging their ears going “LA LA LA” about the issue will learn from it. If we don’t learn from our mistakes then there is no point, because we’ve already decided that our pride is more important than protecting our community by admitting our mistakes. At this point if another situation comes around like Hilary/Bernie I have no doubt in my mind that we will repeat the same mistake. If say, Pelosi ran against a Bernie type, and the same scenario
happened the democrats would absolutely choose Pelosi and lose again.

SO many people are just giving your line, some iteration of “stop rehashing it”, instead of admitting that we were wrong, we should have chosen Bernie, and that as a party the democrats need to stop towing the establishment line, learn our lessons, grow some spines, pay attention to how our candidates our viewed by the general population, or we can continue the march toward failure.

          • JCF

“instead of admitting that we were wrong, we should have chosen Bernie,”: Oh brother. Re-arranging the deck chairs on the Trumptanic are we? Spare me.

          • Dwight Williamson

Obviously you and Unsaved Heathen were Bernie Sanders supporters. I believe Hillary won the primary fairly. Bernie would have been slaughtered in the general, thanks to you if you did vote for Bernie -Hillary was impeded in every way even after there was no path to victory for him. I respond once, don’t waste my time. That is all!q

      • Oshtur

its even more unfortunate that people didn’t vote to defeat Trump. Again, I sincerely hope that the lessons learned are painful, enduring, and educational.

Sanders was a blowhard who would have gotten no support in Congress, failed at every initiative, and just made sure that another socialist candidate had no chance of winning an election for another 50 years. If people want what Bernie was selling they needed to have put the right people in Congress first, but that’s too much work or long thinking I suspect.

        • JD

Have no dog in this fight, but this is pure conjecture spoken with the same assurance that said Trump could not be nominated (much less annointed).

There’s an awful lot of shifting chairs on the USS Titanic.

High time to figure out how to create the country so many say you have (given the clear evidence the country is not gawd’s gift to humanity [sorry]). Playing at gaming who wins will not change anything and if there is any truth at all emerging from this fiasco, it is that there is need for serious reflection, deep investigations of the character of the nation and its people and how the governance model intersects.

But, we get on with life, snipe and drown outrage, and watch until it is too late. Found myself thinking this as driving to do some errands…easy to imagine a 1935 guy doing the same, returning hoe to find a termination from a job, epithets scrawled across windows…dead dog.

          • Oshtur

A wasted vote is a wasted vote. You either vote to put someone in office or vote to keep someone out of office. Almost half the country didn’t vote – they deserve whatever they get, and the ones that voted for unelectable candidates hopefully will learn a valuable lesson that they will remember to tell their grand children about.

I’m old and my health care is through the VA. I’ll be fine for as long as I last but the burn of having either actively or passively gotten Trump elected and flooded the Congress with his lackies – I’m just going to pop the popcorn and watch the the apocalypse unfold.

er…hello…you’re worried that the wrong ship is cited? Rather missing the point (and not getting that it is the USS Titanic that is going down).

          • JD

I know that…it is an allusion to what is happening in your country right now…

      • Dazzer

Yet she still received three million more votes than Trump.

The problem didn’t lie with the electorate, it lies fairly and squarely with the electoral system.

If the system isn’t fixed, it doesn’t matter what candidate is put up – the system will always be against him/her

        • Goggles

I agree that Clinton got more votes than Trump, and I wish that she were going to be president instead of him, but Democrats knew how the electoral system worked before going into it. Running up 3 million extra votes between CA and NY is meaningless unless they also have a plan to migrate those people into states that matter electorally.

That’s not a Clinton vs. Sanders dig necessarily, but it’s definitely a dig at a Democratic party establishment that let the country hollow out like that.

      • j.martindale

Oh, please! The rethugs had a two inch thick dossier on Sanders that they were holding onto, waiting for the right moment to destroy his political aspirations. Clinton never used any of that stuff against him. Quit with the unicorns!

      • Bill_Perdue

Not really. Sander is a Democrat and they are a party of racists.

    • FAEN

      But her emails….

    • kaydenpat

      Benghazi!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Email server!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Clinton Foundation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Ninja0980

      Both parties are the same.

  • david fairfield

One step forward, one leap backwards. This applies to the entire administration. It’s making me sick to my stomach.

  • kirtanloorii

It seems like he has never heard of combat mix ammo before. But hey, he received a #GoldenShower from Trump, so let’s put him in office.

  • Ron

When dragging his knuckles to the Pentagon them there arrows can get mixed up!!

  • Cuberly

“…unless someone brings a problem to his attention.”

Just how difficult is it to locate an offended “Christian” demanding “special accommodation” at lgbtq expense?

    • Bared Bear

Exactly. And they’ll just make up shit if they can’t find anything.

      • Cuberly

It’s how they pursue anti-choice legislation so yep. It’s their tried and true strategy.

They just work on making the language sound purdy.

    • Lumpy Gaga

      Swing a dead mouse….

    • Nowhereman

Yes, and just exactly what does he consider to be a problem. We already know Trump’s response to the high incidence of rape in the military “Well what did they expect when you put men and women together?”

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

Sad Dog Mattis thinks the homos would rather suck off the enemy than fight them

      • Martin

What a revealing comment about heterosexuality.

        • Nowhereman

True that. I’ve never figured out why some straight men think that any and every woman on the planet OWES them sex, or else.

    • Chucktech

Lift up any rock from your manure-laden garden or drain any scummy pond and there they are.

    • LaChatSayWha

When dUmp gets us into the inevitable war, this backwards-ass bigot and his 50s-loving cronies are going to be really surprised at the military they inherit. They think they’re moving the country back to the 50s when everything was so much easier for straight white boys like themselves, but the military is not composed of white boys alone anymore. Straight, gay, trans, black, Latino, Asian people make up much of our military now. And having talked with more than a few of these folks in my hood, they don’t want to fight for trump and the rest of these racist, misogynistic homophobes. Gen. Mattis is going to find himself fighting resistance he has never dreamed of.

    • zhera

PerKKKins is already on it. He’ll have a binder full by the time inauguration day is over.

  • ceeenbee

Paging peter thiel! Paging peter thiel!

So, you don’t “think” it’s going to make any difference you piece of shit?

    • Bared Bear

I reserve the hottest parts of my rage for gay people like him.

    • rextrek1

someone needs to punch that Ahole in the face ….

  • Jon Doh

I don’t think many LGBTs would want to serve under this Commander In Chief anyway.

    • Todd20036

Maybe, but if you have 10 years in the military, you aren’t about to just up and quit.
Also, if that is the only job you can find, then you’re a soldier.

      • Lazycrockett

I would venture to say that the cost of stripping the military of gay and hell at this point women soldiers would cost bout as much as it will to repeal the ACA. We are going to be back in typical GOP deficits AGAIN.

        • Snarkaholic

The women will probably still be able to serve (meals in the mess hall).

        • Friday

Over of course purely spiteful and destructive measures.

      • Gene

and for many men and women, its a calling, and their identity. they proudly serve.

this man being an ass should not affect the service they render us all.

    • SFBruce

That shouldn’t mean that LGBT people who want and are capable of serving should be deprived of the opportunity, and it’s short sighted on the part of the country not to welcome all willing and able bodies.

  • Bared Bear

Like Trump, the STDs of the 80s was his own personal Vietnam. Have pity.

  • The_Wretched

I’m deeply concerned about the concentration of ex-generals in Trump’s picks. The military has to stand up against illegal and criminal orders. Guys like this one…I don’t see that happening.

  • thom

fuck all the queer folks who voted for trump, or stein or johnson.

I’m guessing trans service will be the first line of attack.

    • Bared Bear

Of course, there might be a man in there with a big, poofy wig trying to grab those nice ladies in their no no zone.

      • Friday

These are the guys who were worried about those helpless combat Marines getting assaulted by ‘wussy gays’ in the showers. 🙂

  • stuckinthewoods

McCain was happy enough to cut off Gillibrand’s request (for Mattis’ position in writing?). “I like people who”… don’t.

  • Bared Bear

I used to laugh at Texas wanting to secede. Now I think it may be a good idea for the blue states to extricate themselves from the red menace.

    • m_lp_ql_m

Essentially impossible, but CalExit is doing pretty good and gaining momentum.

    • Friday

Voting Texas off the island would probably be just as good. Better overall, …Calexit would just mean a long border with a right-wing-controlled US for probably a couple decades at least.

  • Lazycrockett

This having to constantly hard reload is annoying at hell. Where’s the vodka?

  • Randy503

Well, that’s the dog whistle. There are still some generals and higher ups that are upset that gays serve openly, not to mention those evangelical chaplains. All they have to do is find some “problems” and bring them to light, and voila — an excuse to recommend gays get booted.

No, it won’t be easy. Yes, there will be resistance. But these people don’t care about winning wars — they care only about jesus.

  • Tiger Quinn

Fuck. I spent three months in jail at Fort Knox in 1990 when a fundamentalist commander decided to make me and my roommate “pay.” Hard labor for three months and at the mercy of the other psychos who were in for rape and murder. FUCK. That can’t happen to soldiers again.

  • Mark

all because them angry old white men just can’t keep that never erect dick in their pants

  • Tiger Quinn

I guess some part of me feels like, all right gay soldiers, GET OUT NOW. Do not become a body for the pile in the war you know they’re brewing up – they’ll relax the restrictions during combat but when you come home…

  • Lumpy Gaga

Nichole Wallace had had quite enough of yapping from the press about Herr Trump last night when she reminded Brian Williams et al. that they just don’t get it.

Why, Miss Thing was just in “real” places like Erie, PA and Youngstown Ohio, where “real” people like the jobs and “prosperity” brought by fracking, and just deal with the earthquakes. Why no one asked her why she didn’t marry Youngstown if she liked it so much…

  • GayOldLady

So if we have gays & lesbians in the field they will render the force not able to be at it’s “most lethal”? He just couldn’t bring himself to answer that question and inadvertently answered it. How stupid is he? LGBT people have been fighting in war from the beginning of time. Goddamit, now we’re going to have to re-engage in this battle too?

  • teeveedub

It’s looking like all these fuckwits were coached by the same team in how to avoid answering a direct question. If the answers they’re giving in these hearings were given in a traditional job interview, they wouldn’t make it past the first screening.

  • another_steve

They’ve all been coached and prepped to the max. All the Sexual Predator-Elect’s nominees.

All of them are going to “follow the law.” Of course, they’ll all be lobbying behind the scenes to change the laws they and Trump’s theofascist base don’t like, but nevertheless they’re all going to “follow the law.”

    Well done, Steve Bannon.

    Well done.

    • LaChatSayWha

      Bingo. Well said.

    • Friday

Or they’ll just say they’re following the law by lying to our faces while breaking the law anyway. Those law things are for the little people, remember?

  • Lumpy Gaga

Meanwhile, ACA repeal as part of the budget reconciliation sailed through the Senate 51-48 this morning. Any Democrat who said anything besides “Yes” or “No” was warned that debate wasn’t allowed during a vote, and some (Warren) were told they were out of order.

  • M Jackson

Who wouldn’t want to be protected by a bunch of lesbians ready for a fight?

  • FAEN

Signorile’s book ‘It’s Not Over’ should be read every year to remind us that the GOTP will never let us live in peace and we will have to constantly fight to keep the rights we’ve fought and died for. It’s sad that we have to but that’s the reality we live in.

  • Bill_Perdue

In related news “Whistleblower Chelsea Manning is reportedly on President Barack Obama’s shortlist for commutation, sources have told NBC’s ‘Today Show’.

According to a Justice Department source, Manning is on Barack Obama’s shortlist, and a commutation is being “actively considered” by the president. A decision could be reached “as soon as today [Wednesday],” NBC’s political correspondent Cynthia McFadden said.

Edward Snowden’s 2013 leaks also played a role in Manning’s harsh sentence, according to officials, with the impact of his leaks emerging as Manning’s case was drawing to a close.”

If it happens it will be the result of a mass action that garnered over 100,000 petitions demanding that her torturer, Obama, release her.

    Chelsea Manning is a heroine.

    • Millstone

Manning committed espionage. Snowden is a coward. Obama will not tarnish his legacy by pardoning either of them.

      • Friday

Well, commuting a sentence isn’t the same as pardoning. Manning’s hardly ‘heroic’ for dumping all that classified stuff, but she gets cut some slack in my book considering that *thanks* to DADT and worse anti-trans policies, she was faced with a situation where she was having to cover up for possible war crimes *without* legit recourse to the chain of command. Still was breaking the regs and the law and being reclkessly-indiscriminate, but that’s a heck of an extenuating circumstance, too.

      • Bill_Perdue

Obama is a right wing racist, a mass murder and his regime helped bust the UAW.

Aside form those, what are some of the other reasons you like Obama?

  • FAEN

Where is Vichy Kate to explain how Dumpster is so NOT anti gay.

  • djfinance

SLDN is reporting things differently. Am I missing something here?

“General Mattis Indicates He Will Not Roll Back Open LGBT Military Service As Secretary of Defense”

    • Interesting. He’s leaving himself an out, but I suspect that he figures the blowback would be so heavy it wouldn’t be worth it. It’s really only the hard-core Bible-thumpers* who would consider putting up with the grief.

      * That is, the ones who are making their livings gay-bashing.

  • Brian in Valdosta

Look, I know that people want to ask hard-hitting questions and dig into the psyche of the people that Herr Drumpf has put forward as his nominees, but the issue of LGBTQ military personnel serving in the military is a decided question. There is no going back on that.

The congressional panelists might as well have asked him about whether people of African descent should serve alongside people of European descent. The question was settled. Long ago.

    • Tiger Quinn

Why do you think this? It was a military regulation change. Those change easily.

      • kevin vincent

The backlash would be immense inside and outdo the military throwing able bodied soldiers out of the military for their sexuality would be catastrophic

        • stevenj

The military has had no problems in the past throwing abled bodied men and women out for sexual orientation. But I do agree with you there would be a backlash.

          • coram nobis

A backlash would certainly keep the US military busy, and unable to do much in, say, eastern Europe.

          • kevin vincent

Yeah but the soldiers themselves would’ definitely support their brothers in arms

    • scorpiomike

Not to be argumentative, as I respect your comment and opinion. But do you think his views on that topic can help gain an overall impression on his personality as pertains to his ability to lead a diverse military? His negative views about women and gay men I think show quite a bit about him even if it is not likely to lead to real changes in the military policy.

    • stevenj

I wouldn’t be too sure a Republican controlled House and Senate wouldn’t implement DADT again – or an outright ban. It would be easy for them to do it. The repeal was pretty much along party lines and there were way less Republicans in Congress when the repeal happened. Whether trump would sign it into law is a ?.

      • kevin vincent

It’s also been over 6 years since it was repealed the majority of soldiers support having openly gay brothers in arms (and let’s face it in an area with no women for ages several probably got bicurious) and do you seriously think people would take kindly to the government throwing out their soldiers in witch hunt? It would be a catastrophic pr nightmare far worse than the backlash to the ethics deal

    • coram nobis

That could change, and wouldn’t require Congress to reinstitute DADT. Personnel policy is normally the Defense Department’s domain, and all it would take would be one DoD Instruction or directive, and known or suspected LGBTQ personnel would be discharged administratively — no courts-martial necessary since it wouldn’t have to be a criminal matter. The only question would be whether the discharges would be honorable or not.

A purge on this scale would cause chaos, with units breaking up and personnel denouncing each other. And, the military went to great trouble to absorb LGBTQ personnel to begin with, even fostered married couples.

But maybe the Donald would like a disrupted U.S. military while his friend Vladdy is marching into Kiev and Odessa.

    • andrew

A Secretary of Defense, who is not personally in favor of LGBT people serving openly in the military, can put up many road blocks in the careers of those LGBT people. The fact that he would not clearly state that he favors it, sends a troubling signal out to the LGBT people serving in our nations military.

  • Gene Perry

No evasion. I think the General spoke loud & clear on his position.

    • andrew

If there was “no evasion,” why didn’t he say no, in response to Senator Gillibrand’s question about whether he thought allowing LGBT people to serve openly in the military was undermining the combat effectiveness of the force?

    • stevenj

He wouldn’t answer “no” to the question posed twice to him. What was loud and clear is that what he has said and written in the not too distant past he now doesn’t seem willing to refute.

He certainly did: he made it totally clear that if someone reports some kind of “problem” with either women or LGBT service members, he’ll have to act in order to maintain maximum “lethality.” As far as I’m concerned he made it perfectly clear the direction he’d go in correcting said “problem.”

Kudos to your senator for pressing the issue??!! Seriously, if the Bernie or busters would have done the right thing instead of feigning righteous indignation about “the process” this wouldn’t even be an issue and we wouldn’t be in this mess!!

OT: Ben Carson: No Extra Rights for LGBT People In Community Housing

Note: Carson, in the past, has stated that he believes same-sex marriage is an extra right. So, do the math.

I’m starting to notice that a lot of these assholes look a lot like each other. Well, except for Jefferson Beauregard Sessions who is too busy looking like Beverley Leslie…

  • Ninja0980

    In other words.. no.

    • JCF

In other words, Vote NO (on Mattis).

  • BudClark

General “Mad Dog” Mattis. That says it all.

  • Ore Carmi

Bless her for pressing him! The damn chairman(?) cut her off. I had to look up Mattis–I can’t keep track of all these damn Trump nominees. Serious question: why the f*ck did Obama appoint so many extreme conservatives to his administration–Mattis, Comey… ? (When will Democrats learn not to trust Republicans?)

  • DesertSun59

If this short term appointment results in the open discharge of tens of thousands of troops simply for being gay, he will be branded a traitor to this nation. Operational readiness will be disturbingly disrupted due to such a witch hunt.

  • These appointees are all horrible. None of them should have been pulled out from under their rocks to see the light of day.

“Kudos to my Senator for pressing the issue.”

Whoa, my mind went to pressing against Kirsten and I got lost a minute! Yes, brava. Thanks. Don’t let this evasive douchemarine get away w/ it.
