Morning View: Island House Key West

Yesterday I arrived in Key West for my eighth (maybe ninth) annual holiday stay at the fabulous Island House. The joint was jumping last night but things are rather sedate at the moment due to the hour and a bit of warm rain. On Thursday I’ll be attending the book launch party for Ending Anita, our own Father Tony Adams’ recounting of how two Key West bartenders became the first in Florida to win a same-sex marriage lawsuit. I’ve already run into a few JMG readers here at Island House (shout-out to the guys from Memphis and Brighton) so if you’re in town feel free to stop by this week’s poolside blogging station and say hello!ending

  • David L. Caster

Substitute became for because I think.

    • Homo Erectus

      What? It’s always like this.

  • Mark

Jealous to the bone. I’ve been freezin my ass off here in north Texas….
But, you’ve worked danged hard for some R&R – ENJOY!!

  • bkmn

Have fun Joe! Don’t forget the sunblock.

    • DaddyRay

Do they make lube with sunblock

      • Robincho

Lube for where the sun DON’T shine. Sunblock for where it DO…

        • DaddyRay

Things put in places where the sun don’t shine do

  • as much as I love Key West…

The resorts DO NOT appeal to me because I need to SLEEP…but HAPPY that you are having a GREAT time…

    • Mark

oh nos – please say you’re not getting old…..

    • Duh-David

One of the many things I like about Key West and the Island House is that so much revolves around afternoon pool parties and happy hour; I can be in bed by 8pm and not feel like I’ve missed anything. It’s no longer one of those towns where the discos don’t get going until midnight, but if I wake up then, I can still find a party.

  • yeruncle

I stayed there in February based solely on your recommendation. I enjoyed the eye candy etc but my favorite thing were the strong cocktails and floating in the heated pool with the sound of the wind through the trees after dark. The stars and the moon were out. My partner and I had a great time.

  • Silver Badger

    >snark< And just how many tax dollars are being spent on this "vacation"? /s
Relax and enjoy. If anyone has earned a vacation, it's Joe.

  • Rebecca Gardner

Joe’s in Key West. Must be Christmas time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Have fun and Happy Holidays.

  • ColdCountry

Even if it’s raining, it’s still warm! Enjoy!

  • Johnny Wyeknot

    90 miles from Cuba…

  • worstcultever

Gosh I hope Key West is still somewhat as magical as it was in 1982, the one time I was there. I loved the small-town feel, the way everybody showing up to watch the sunset every day was a thing, the cornball conch train, the Margaret Truman Launderette, heck I think I even wound up at a party at the Island House (or somewhere like it), there were a couple of naked shapely dykes swimming around in the pool for accessorization. Anyway, GREAT UNFORGETTABLE PLACE!

Have fun Joe, gods knows you’ve earned it!

  • Dramphooey

Season’s greetings! Enjoy it while you can because after this election I am sure it will be under water all the sooner.

  • thatotherjean

I am green with envy. Key West is my favorite place in the country, and I haven’t been able to get there in several years. Have an extra-good time for me.

  • TuuxKabin

    I N V U.

Yay Joe! Glad you’re somewhere warm, even in a bit of rain. The sun’ll come out, whenever. Hugs. Shelly’s doing a regular knock up job of keeping things going, eh?

    • Silver Badger

I understand she’s meeting with union organizers.

      • worstcultever

        HAH 🙂

      • TuuxKabin

Ja! Last ditch, year end effort.

      • UrsusArctos

Yep, isn’t she a union boss for the AFL-CIO?

          • Joe in PA

That has a nice ring to it huh?

Disgusting, but a nice ring. 🙂

          • edrex

            lord, i hope!

          • TuuxKabin

It’s one of our hopes and wishes.

      • Acronym Jim

Just watched “The Secret Life of Pets” last night. Joe had better watch his ass.

  • TimCA

It’s been something like 15 years since I was last in Key West. I never stayed at Island House but did buy a day pass there to use their gym and hang out poolside. Fun times.

    • djcoastermark

To use their gym ? Is that what they call it? /s

      • TimCA

Yeh, I think there was maybe 3 pieces of equipment. I don’t really remeber any more. Better than nothing after being in the Keys for an entire week.

  • HZ81

It’s the most wonderful time of the year—for Joe!! 🙂 Have fun, Joe. You deserve it.

    • TuuxKabin

    • worstcultever

      too funneh

    • Silver Badger

That’s not Joe. No beard! (in response to Michael R’s post which has been removed by a moderator??????!!?)

    • Jerry

Not to the Keys, but I had to schedule a short vacation after xmas to go to Orlando…staying a week at Parliament House. Haven’t had time yet to decompress after the election…I still need to go on a drinking binge and get it out of my system.

      • beariac

I know how you feel, but pace yourself – there’s likely four years’ more fuckery to come. Enjoy your vacay and if you go to Pulse, please lay a flower for me and my UK compatriots. Happy Holidays.

        • Jerry

Thanks…and Happy Holidays to you. And I’m going to stop by Pulse.

As to pacing myself, if I didn’t die of alcohol poisoning last year at Southern Decadence, and survived the last 2 years of Bear Week in P-town, I think I’ll handle Orlando okay. I think their bars close at 2 am, and most nights I’ll just be downstairs at the bars inside Parliament House…easy to stagger back to the room.

  • GayOldLady

    Have a great time Joe!

    • Librarykid

Or do like the Flintstones and have a gay old time.

  • Acronym Jim

And here in Portland, Oregon, the snow has just barely melted.

  • Joe in PA

It is snowing here in PA Joe Jervis. So there’s that.

  • EweTaw

A passenger on a cruise ship heading to Key West spots a bearded man on a small island, shouting and desperately waving his hands.

The passenger goes to the captain and asks: “Who is that?”

The captain says, “Beats me. Every week when we pass, he goes nuts.”

    • sherman

And Trebek says “The answer is – How can tell if your captain is a Republicon?”

  • T-Batwoman

Have a good time Joe! I could use a spot of warm weather myself!!

  • FAEN

    Have a wonderful time Joe.

  • Ninja0980

    Have a good time Joe!

  • John Ruff

I smiled when I saw this post. And then I read that Carly Fiorina is gonna be meeting Trumpf at his tower to discuss his transition. LOLLOLLLOLOLOLLLOLLOLLO. What a fucking w ho re

    • djcoastermark

Oh if only he was going to transition. Imagine the sh*tstorm. (not gonna happen, but an amusing thought when I read that)

  • sherman

My gay card has never been punched for Key West or P-town. Probably never will.

    • Rebecca Gardner

I’ve never been to Key West but I have been to P-Town and Cherry Grove a lot of times.

      • True story — I was the only one of two males at the official Dykes on Bikes Brunch before the Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco one year. I have no idea why I was invited other than that the guy who I was with was pals with all the ladies. It was very cool.

    • That actually would make a fabulous t-shirt. For either place. “My Gay Card Has Never Been Punched for Key West (or whatever) so Buy Me a Drink”. Wear it in clubs and bars — it is a good conversation starter!

  • Jay George
  • Homo Erectus
  • Rebecca Gardner

No new stories from Joe. I guess he’s gotten into the Mimosas and we’re done for the day. Ya know, that’s a good idea. I’m gonna do the same.

    Have a great day everyone.

  • Ninja0980

The hubby and I will be doing some Christmas soon.
Hope everyone has a good day, especially Joe.

  • SoCalGal20

    Ooh have fun!

That reminds me, I suppose I should get back to FL (at the least Orlando area) before it becomes part of the Atlantic or Caribbean or whatever once climate change floods it off the map. I have relatives in Tampa and I do enjoy Walt Disney World.

  • I am tired of the warm South Florida weather — it is going to be around 80 degrees during the day and 70 at night with some warm showers through Xmas. Is it snowing anywhere else north of here? I would love for you guys to send a blizzard or two down here! There is nothing as depressing (and this is true) as walking into Target and seeing piles of firewood for sale. Who wants to have a toasty warm fireplace in Flori-duh???

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

I could pack a cooler full of snow and bring it it to you.

    • Librarykid

I have often thought it one of the worst jobs in the world to have was putting the Christmas ornaments on the store shelves in FL in October when it was still nice and hot.

  • ByronK

Have a wonderful time, Joe! A more than deserved break. Get naked and have a martini for me!

  • DoctorDJ
    • Bad Tom

That dude looks like he went personal body wind snow sailing.

    • TestSubject51

Cool. Don’t even have to spend energy to walk.

    • Librarykid

I know I’m stating the obvious, but fire hydrants have to be raised and protected from plows because of horrible snow, right? Where is this frozen hell? What is the flashing red light attached to?

  • rusty57

Enjoy your time in Key West Joe.

  • Canadian Observer

“…a bit of warm rain.” As I read that it is -26C here (about 15 below zero in American), but hasn’t snowed for several days so I guess I have nothing to complain about. Hope you enjoy your vacation Joe. Don’t forget the sunscreen when the rain clouds move on.

  • TestSubject51

Warm here in SE TX where I am visiting my parents, but not quite that beautiful !

  • Deviancy Behavir

Have fun! I went for the first time to Island House last month and had a blast. Only went out once to check out Duval Street, wasn’t too impressed and headed right back to the boys and the booze. lol It was funny though, when I checked it, there were at least 5 more people from Chicago checking in that same day and they called us the Chicago faction coming into town. lol Can’t wait to go back.

  • rednekokie

So nice to read something nice and pleasant on this site, after all the republijerks who usually gather the attention of some.

Wish I could afford to go down there and cavort!

  • Enjoy.

  • CoffeeGeekmn

I always stay at the Equator resort when in Key West – I like the the closer proximity to Duval Street. Ate lunch at the Island House once, seemed like a fun place. Stop by the Cuban Coffee Queen for me and get a Key Wester and cortadito! Enjoy!

  • fuzzybits

That pool looks so inviting. It’s currently 35 degrees here.

  • Bill Harnsberger

Went there for ten years and made a point to have lunch at the Island House once or twice, but we always stayed at Oasis. It’s now co-ed, as so many gay places have gone there. I think Island House and Equator are the only two left. It was sad to see the “gay drain” over the years. Our heart sank when Flaming Maggies closed. Still a wonderful location for R&R, though, until sea levels do that thing they’re gonna do.

  • Six Pins Delores

Already miss seeing greenery outside. Enjoy Joe!

  • edrex

damp and cold here. just got in from walking dog, built a fire in the woodstove, made a nice cup of tea, opened jmg and see joe’s view. i have mixed feelings now. maybe i’ll throw some bourbon in the tea. well… have a lovely time, joe.

  • Tom Ato

Have a great time Joe. 30 in PA and a few flurries.

  • Rick Hammond

I’m just up the road in West Palm Beach but I can see Island House from my back yard.

  • Rt1583

    “for my eighth (maybe ninth)”

That one must have been one hell of a holiday.

I’ll admit that I’ve lost entire nights but I’ve never lost an entire holiday.

  • MikeinATL

    Dang, just missed you…
