Obama Orders “Full Review” Of Election Hacking

Politico reports:

President Barack Obama has ordered a “full review” of hacking-relating activity aimed at disrupting last month’s presidential election and he expects that report before he leaves office on Jan. 20, a top White House official said Friday. “We may have crossed into a new threshold and it is incumbent upon us to take stock of that, to review, to conduct some after-action, to understand what has happened and to impart some lessons learned,” Obama counterterrorism and homeland security adviser Lisa Monaco told reporters at a breakfast arranged by the Christian Science Monitor.

More from Bloomberg:

The report, which will be provided to Congress but not necessarily made public, will examine what impact hacking by Russia may have had on the election last month, Monaco said.   The report comes as Democrats and some key Republicans in Congress are vowing next year to pursue Russia’s role in hacking even though President-elect Donald Trump has scoffed at a finding already made by U.S. intelligence agencies that the Russian government was behind attacks and leaks on Democrats. “I don’t believe they interfered,” Trump said in an interview with Time Magazine published this week. “That became a laughing point, not a talking point, a laughing point. Any time I do something, they say, ‘Oh, Russia interfered.’”

  • Acronym Jim

“Donald Trump has scoffed at a finding already made by U.S. intelligence agencies that the Russian government was behind attacks and leaks on Democrats.”

I pretty sure people in the intelligence agencies don’t appreciate having their hard work laughed at. Keep pissing them off, Donny. See how far that goes.

    • ColdCountry

      Hm, who killed the Kennedys?

      • marshlc

Mink Jagger told me it was you and me….

    • He doesn’t listen to them anyway. He knows all that stuff better than the professionals — just ask him.

    • David Walker

Drumpf scoffs at anything about intelligence. It’s a good sign for his Drumpfsters.

    • JCF

Maybe Drumpf could go the way of Salvador Allende?

  • bkmn

I wish he had done this earlier, perhaps so the report could be ready before the electoral college votes.

    • Jamie_Johnson

I hate to say it, but why would Obama have done this earlier? He’s committed to a peaceful transition of power, and any finding showing that there was interference that resulted in Cheetolini’s win would only raise the ire of his supporters, particularly any reporting that without the foreign meddling, Cheetolini would not have won. I completely agree with you, but Obama has shown us throughout his eight years that he was not willing to take Republicans on in the same manner in which they have him. And it’s a tragedy, as Americans respect power more than order; if Democrats ever learn this lesson, we might stand a fighting chance.

    • JT

It should have been done much, much earlier.

  • Moebym, Resistance Pilot

Meh, don’t bother. Hillary lost all by herself. Why, just ask Morning Joe and any random BoB! /s

  • 2patricius2

Finally. But it should be made public, not just released to the Congress.

    • William

The report should be handed out to the crowds on inauguration day.

      • Bj Lincoln

        YES!

      • Xiao Ai

What? And rock the American power structure? NEVER!

      • Anastasia Beaverhousen

        Dropped from helicopters.

In Blue States—where it CAN (and will) be read.

    • 500-some-odd people with political axes to grind will have that report. It’ll be made public for sure.

      • ColdCountry

    • DaddyRay

The current Congress would use it as a playbook for future elections

    • Paul David

I’m sure when the report is complete, and Pres. Trump is in the Oval Office, he will adhere to the transparency he has thus far and release the report!

  • Texndoc

Whatever happened to James Comey? Seems to me the Hillary momentum slammed into a cement wall that Friday and never recovered

    • Acronym Jim

True, if I recall correctly, she was either +10 or +12 in the national polls before his announcement and that dropped to +2 by election day. Interestingly, she also won the popular vote by +2; just imagine what she would have gotten if Comey had followed FBI protocol about not commenting on investigations, especially during election seasons.

    • Treant

What happened to James Comey? Nothing, he’s still there working for Your Safety And Freedom ™. Except that no Dem will ever trust him again, but I doubt he cares.

    • Bj Lincoln

James Comey should have been arrested and charged with interference the second after he opened his damn mouth.

    • justmeeeee

      momentum?

    • Ninja0980

Not only hers but Democrats downticket as well.
As for Comey, nothing will happen to him, especially since he helped Republicans everywhere.

  • Michael R

It’s a shame no one knew to clean up the voting system before the election .

    • Oikos

The repigs would have blocked any action to do so. The system of disenfranchisement is how they ‘win.’

      • ColdCountry

(I think he may have forgotten the sarcasm tag.)

    • joe ho

It’s a shame the DNC didn’t concentrate on a 50 state strategy of controlling state governments like the GOP did over the last 15 years. That’s the main reason all this shit is coming down.

Obama’s betrayal of his base during his first 2 years led to the 2010 mid-term debacle which crippled the Democrats.

    • Kate

We do. REAL ID (which requires proof of lawful status) used as voter ID, with a centralized database to purge duplicate registrations, non-citizens, and felons. Eliminate mail in ballots for everyone not living 100+ miles from their designated polling location. Replace electronic voting with paper. Eliminate same-day registration, because it makes it difficult to verify voters.

Finally, offer the ID for free, and ensure that absolutely everyone gets one. Register everyone to vote while we are at it. If India can do a federally issued voter ID for all it’s citizens, the US can too.

Unfortunately, the democrats generally oppose all but eliminating electronic voting.

  • Bad Tom

    It’s about time, Mr. President!

  • hee. this will be a fun thread to revisit when i’m done with other stuff, later today. have at it, my pretties. i really want to hear what some of you have to say about this, given some of your previous comments on the subject. don’t worry, i bookmarked them in anticipation of this day. 😉

    • ColdCountry

Well, now. I may just come back later myself. :-)

  • Treant

It’s nice it’s getting ordered, but it should have been done two weeks ago.

Yeah, it probably was started November 9th, but let us know these things. :-)

You know Trump will do everything he can to kill this or render it impotent, so a lot’s going to have to be done before January 20th or it’ll never GET done.

    • David Walker

Reminiscent of the bush quashing the report on teen suicide because it might be used for pro-gay purposes. The shit just keeps flowing. (When you’re over 65, never assume it’s just a fart.)

      • Treant

When you’re 47 and have gastritis, that’s also a bad assumption!

  • Giant Monster Gamera

If he doesn’t believe they interfered, then why did he say “I will tell you this, Russia: If you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” on July 27th?

It would be nice if we had some sort of session, maybe called a “Press Conference”, where members of the press could ask these questions directly?

    • David Walker

Anymore I think such questions would be asked only if the reporters wore ski masks. Also, I think Drumpf’s “advisers” would highly discourage a press conference. Ever. But particularly now.

      • bobbyjoe

Lina Lamont sums up how I feel about Donald J. Trump:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtpBt_DK5G0

        • David Walker

Didn’t Jean Hagen nail Lina perfectly? She’s (Jean) is so under-appreciated. (I know…OGT…Obviously Gay Trait.) I love DVDs because I can watch “Singing in the Rain” just for the dances and for her and skip the other parts. I also do a Margaret Hamilton version of “The Wizard of Oz.” OK, I watch Judy on the farm, but Margaret Hamilton is so amazing. God. I really am gay, aren’t I?

          • agcons

I’ve also read or heard (Tired Old Queen, maybe?) that Jean did her own singing. So, she sang for Kathy Selden singing for Lina Lamont.

    • Treant

Isn’t a press conference something only black Presidents and women are required to have?

      • dr morbius

lol, Clinton had one all year…

        • Giant Monster Gamera

Clinton wasn’t President and wasn’t supposed to be accountable to the people.

        • Snarky

Clinton started having press conferences on Sept. 8. Trump’s last press conference was July 27. More than 130 days.

This is the longest a president-elect has gone in modern history without taking questions from the press. Maybe we’ll hear from him post-impeachment.

    • Kate

“If he doesn’t believe they interfered, then why did he say “I will tell you this, Russia: If you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” on July 27th?”

Because there is a difference between believing they did interfere, and wanting them to interfere. Trump wanted them to interfere, and to release any emails they had hacked from Hillary’s server.

It would have been evidence that her carelessness and disregard for protecting classified information led to secrets being in possession of state actors.

    • ColdCountry

He was working with them, of course he knew! I can’t believe it’s even a question that his campaign knew. And while I agree that we need a press conference, I’m not sure what good it would do as he’d just refuse to answer the questions. He’s that presidential.

  • ColdCountry

“I believe….” Ergo, truth matters not. Besides, of course he doesn’t want an investigation, he’s in it to his ears.

  • “Any time I do something, they say, ‘Oh, Russia interfered.”

Yeah, well, we know who you take your orders from.

  • The_Wretched

    Nice but not enough.

  • mikeinrkfd

About damn time, you know the tRump administration wouldn’t do that.

  • David Walker

For god’s sake, don’t overlook the Veles, Macedonia connection. I’ve my 3-source verification that at least part of it is kids making great sums of money in a city with a 25% unemployment rate. “Who cares about US elections?” And the mayor is proud of his youth for helping elect Drumpf. The kids speak and write English better than many of their readers…so, of course, they’re authorities. Plus they churned out a lot of Hate Hillary stuff. It’s not against Macedonian law. And how many of us can speak or write flawless Macedonian? (I just felt like Dan Quayle… is the language Macedonian?) Making Russia A target, a very LARGE target, of the investigation is laudable, but even NBC has done a story on Veles’ cottage industry. While we still have a government, investigate all the possibilities.

  • Kelly Lape

Sorry Der Pumpkin Fuehrer, just because your Collaborators laughed doesn’t mean the country laughed.

  • Unless Congress breaks with Cheetolini, this is wasted effort. Yes, I know a few GOP’ers have been making noise the last few days about “investigating” Russia, but we know where that will lead, a one way dead end street. If they still have even the smallest grain of patriotism in their bloated hateful souls they would indeed do something and not let this go. The press for the first time in decades needs to get off their news-tainment asses and get out there and do actual reporting, not let this go, keep hammering away until the truth is dug out.

Have the keening of “Obama’s declared martial law!!!” started in Teabaglandia yet?

  • NO MORE GOP!

A little effing late in the game, Mr. President.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Unfortunately, this is the epitome of Too Little, Too Late. This should have been done, if not during the election, seconds after the election was called for Trump.

    • JWC

don’t you find it surprising the only one saying anything about a rigged election was Trump What did he know and when

  • Mark

“incumbent upon us to take stock of that, to review, to conduct some
after-action, to understand what has happened and to impart some lessons
    learned”

At this point, I am somewhat leery of the stated objective. It doesn’t say they have intel on hacking, or manipulation of tallies. Do we really think Repigs will embrace ‘lessons learned”? Or is it all carefully worded to keep inauguration day from being the center piece of an historic revolt on the National Mall?

  • SoCalGal20

This is great but I’m still waiting for Comey to be fired and an investigation of the NY FBI office. Where’s that action and investigation?

  • NancyP

This Needs To Be Made Public. At least, this needs to be provided to every (specifically, including Democrat Reps and Senators) politician in the Capital.

Things just go from bad to worse.

  • MonochromeMouse

Obama should just declare martial law for the next 4 years, I’m ok with giving up my constitutional rights to a benign dictator who actually cares about the country and the citizens if the other option is having a despot steal them anyway.

    • Kate

Remember how Obama expanded executive power for years and years? All that power now goes to Trump. Do you really want more power going to the GOP when their turn comes around again?

      • MonochromeMouse

Will you please just Fuck Off already? no one here likes you because all you do is argue, you never post anything yourself you just reply to everyone with your libertarian/green party BS.

You don’t even offer an opinion, you just troll and argue with everyone. What right wing nutjob site sent you?

  • SelectFromWhere

Unfortunately, even if there were incontrovertible evidence of Russian hacking, what is the law on how to proceed then? We can’t have another election, and it would cause literal rioting and insurrection by the tRump supporters.

    • ColdCountry

That’s the rub, isn’t it? And if the EC “goes rogue” and elects Clinton, there will be bloodshed. How do you choose a path forward?

  • justmeeeee

Look out, Julian, the Hill-bots is comin’ fer ya!

Yes. He is still the President, and it’s time people remembered that.

  • cleos_mom
