OHIO: Trump Campaign Appeals To Sixth Circuit Over Ban On Watching, Intimidating, Or Harassing Voters

The Washington Post reports:

A written order from a federal judge in Ohio seeks to prevent Republican Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and others from taking part in certain activity that could intimidate voters.

U.S. District Judge James Gwin in Cleveland ruled Friday that anyone who engages in intimidation or harassment inside or near polling places, regardless of political alliance, would face contempt of court charges.

Gwin’s decision to grant a temporary restraining order follows a complaint filed by the Ohio Democratic Party against Trump’s campaign and Republican political operative Roger Stone. Gwin dismissed the Ohio Republican Party as a defendant in the case.

The judge’s written order blocks activities from both campaigns that include unauthorized poll watching, the admonishing or questioning of voters, and taking photos or recording voters inside or near polling places.

And this just in from Buzzfeed.

  • bkmn

Of course they will appeal the ruling. How else can they possibly throw the election?

    • bmedle

I hear they’re working with the FBI to combat election fraud and the like. They’re even bringing in consultants from Russia, and they’re the best, really, at the whole integrity aspect of elections.

    • 2patricius2

Ah, yes. Trumpites think judge that doesn’t allow them to intimidate voters is being unfair and “rigging” the election by allowing voters who might vote against them to vote.

      • Traxley Launderette

An “activist” judge, i.e., one who doesn’t cater to their every diabolical whim.

      • Paula Key

Give the intimidators brown shirts, arm bands and salutes.

    • another_steve

I’m thinking this will be the big story to follow on Tuesday: Trump-thug intimidation of voters.

Russia is probably aiding and abetting their initiative.

      • sherman

I hope the story isn’t a terrorist attack on Monday or Tuesday.

        • BudClark

There WAS a news story today about possible Al Quaida attacks on Monday or Tuesday … I don’t remember where.

          • Paula Key

“I’ve got friends in low places!”

  • bmedle

This should be interesting. The 6th Circuit is one of the more conservative ones, unfortunately (they caused the circuit split that gave us Obergefell).

    • that very well may have been a blessing in disguise.

      • bmedle

        Most definitely.

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Why would he fight against this? Doesn’t he think he could win fairly?/s

  • DaddyRay

What possible defense could be presented to intimidate voters

    • Cuberly

Ah but Drumpf only hires the best of the best when it comes to lawyers. They’re well versed in the intricacies and nuances when it comes to arguing a case.

      • Traxley Launderette

        More punchable than Shkreli.

        That bad.

    • J Ascher

In their minds, “self defense.” Defending themselves against a sure loss of historic proportions.

  • Adam King

In other words, they want to be free to harass and intimidate voters. I see.

  • Steverino

Sounds like he wants to rig the election.

    • Dirk Prophet

      But Mom, they started it.

      • Snarkaholic

        They hit me back first!!!

  • Dramphooey

Is the higher court scum? As a rule the Trump campaign only appeals to scum.

    • tonyg

I see what you did there!

  • Todd20036

Think about that. Trump is appealing the decision that he’s not allowed to intimidate voters.

    But Hillary Clinton is crooked.

    • that was exactly my thought. exactly.

    • AtticusP

I think it’s called “projection”, and Donald Trump and his evil little minions are masters at it.

      • crewman

Actually I think it’s more sinister than projection — I think it’s inoculation. They accuse their opponent of something they are going to be accused of, so that the more serious and factual charge against them just sounds like “more of the same”; it’s muted.

In honor of a poster here, my dearest cat lady, here is a break. And yes, dogs are the better pet. Want proof? Lock your partner in your car trunk for an hour’s and then do your dog. When you let each out, see who is happy to see y. Lol

My girl kitty, about 15 minutes before I get home from work, jumps on the piano near our front door to wait for me and does her dancing (alternating raising and lowering her front paws) and purrs and drools with excitement, knowing I will be home soon.

And then I come in, have my 1-2 minutes of pets with her, and she then goes and does her own thing for much of the rest of the night.

And when I leave on vacation, I can leave my four cats home with someone just dropping by once a day for a few minutes to visit them, feed them, and give them water.

Cats are the best by far :-).

          • vorpal

I suspect that you just don’t understand the beautiful and loving intricacies of cat behaviour.

I have faith, though, in your ability to learn ;-).

          • Guest

            My comment went away.

Well glad to see your cat thinks it is a dog. Glad that it is aspiring upward. 😉

It just gets better and better…

  • Dear Republican Party,

There is no right to intimidate voters in the Constitution. Sit down and shut up.

  • Dave B

Fucking librul judges…..Rigging the process to make it harder for Trump to rig the election.

  • Dirk Prophet

The courts need to be firm on this, but…it’s not like these white boys are gonna go goosestepping down to the ghetto. They much prefer the safety of more rural environs.

  • sword

How dare an judge tell the GOP, especially Donald Trump, how to handle voting.
Next, a judge will say that it was illegal for Donald to have sex with a 13 year old girl.

  • safari

I think in my state only people trained to do so can contest a voter. Anyone can watch the ballot process, but they can’t do anything else. We’re part of the 6th circuit.

    • Traxley Launderette

      You are correct.

  • TrollopeReader

Law & Order candidate. Yikes. Supported by numerous patrolmen’s unions, the “Oath Keepers” and others ….

  • safari

My Trump supporting father is against poll intimidation and election law changes to make it harder to vote. Strangely, he was unaware that Trump wants people to interfere. When I told him about it, he cited the many black panthers who intimidated people not to vote last election. He seemed to think it was an epidemic in some unspecified state on the east coast. (Why yes, Fox News was on in the background.)

    • Traxley Launderette

We was wrong, of course. But I’m sure he’d reply with “You can’t prove it didn’t happen!”

      Thoughts and prayers, dude.

  • Lazycrockett

The GOP is bound and determine to keep that ban on them.

    • safari

There is no GOP only Zuul.

  • BlueberriesForMe

Hasn’t Roger Stone gone off to the “next life” yet courtesy of the Clinton campaign?
How could there be anything more important than that?

  • RainbowPhoenix

So, they’re admitting that they want to intimidate voters.

    • KarenAtFOH

He will let you know after he keeps you guessing.

  • MT YVR

I swear every time I see this photo I keep thinking there’s going to be a skit under the cut for Airplane.

  • Ross

Here is an extraordinary artcle I just read.

In 2004, there were more Republican Latinos than Democratic or Unaffiliated.

Today, there are about 100K more Republican Latinos, about 500K. However, Unaffiliated Latinos have almost doubled during this time to almost 600K, and Democtraic Latinos have more than doubled to almost 800K.

And this is delicious: Most of those 600K Unaffiliated, in presidential elections, vote for Democrats.

  • sfbob

What the hell sort of stupid rationalization is his legal staff going to proffer as the basis of their appeal?

    • Ross

      Your question contains the answer.

  • sfbob

Hopefully the court will agree to hear Trump’s appeal. On Wednesday.

  • sherman

This precious tweet was in replies to a tweet about a Trump supporter yelling at an Obama rally. Smart people indeed. Bless his heart.

    • leastyebejudged

Gonna be glad when all those paid douchebag trump accounts stop being used after the election.

  • Hank

Truly Pathetic… the possibility of an HONEST election, scares the crap out of Hair Drumpf!!!
I do NOT understand, why the RNC would go along with this, since they are trying to get out from under the same thing, that occurred decades ago!!!

    • Bj Lincoln

They could extend the ruling that prevents them from doing this. My folks work the polls every year and know the laws that govern elections and polls in Ohio. Even though they are Trump supporters, they will not put up with anyone outside doing anything wrong.

  • MB

RALEIGH, N.C. — A federal judge has ordered local elections boards in North Carolina to restore voters to the rolls after they were purged too close to Election Day. U.S. District Judge Loretta Biggs issued the ruling Friday after an emergency hearing earlier in the week on NAACP allegations that at least three counties purged voter rolls through a process disproportionately targeting blacks.

The voters’ names were removed through challenges filed by activists, which the NAACP said was illegal under federal law less than 90 days before an election. The NAACP sued earlier this week over thousands of challenges filed in Cumberland, Moore and Beaufort counties.

    • leastyebejudged

      There’s 100 counties in NC.

      I don’t know why I mention this.

    • djcoastermark

I have been following this and yes, the purges in those three counties were extreme. The purged voters were mostly African Americans. In that state anyone can challenge the legitimacy of anyone else’s right to vote and be anonymous in doing so. ( thus avoiding any backlash for their actions) A ploy that is effective but is so wrong!

    • CottonBlimp

      God, they’re despicable.

The DNC better get off their asses this Tuesday and *protect the minority vote* like they *didn’t* do in 2000 in Florida.

  • ByronK

I hope they’ll be raked over the coals in the media for appealing this, but when so little attention is given to Nosferatu getting leaked information from sources in the CIA about the Clinton emails, I’ve given up hoping for anything really.

  • leastyebejudged

I want to see some arrests and convictions, these people know they are breaking the law, the fact that nobody gets arrested for this shit speaks volumes to me about the integrity of our system.

  • NancyP

The injunction is to OBEY THE LAW. It is already illegal to intimidate voters. Most jurisdictions do not allow random non-voting people into the polling place, and may allow only pre-registered election observers (1 per party) in the polling place, with limited speech and behavior according to jurisdiction.

Call 1-866-OUR-VOTE for free legal hotline to address abuses. Election law expert lawyers will immediately call recalcitrant jurisdictions and file emergency legal motions. Call the police for actual obstructive or threatening behavior.

  • Dan Robinson

    O/T but not really…

    • Treant

If only it were a donkey’s rear end delivering the “trump.”

  • FancyThat

Surely, you’re not suggesting that these boobs are trying to suppress peoples’ votes????
